What I Wore: The Happiest Place on Earth

24 September, 2013 Nelia

disneyland-last-day-7

After 5 magical days in California, our Disney Vacay was over and it was time to say good-bye. On our final night, we had one last superb gastronomic experience, this time at the swanky Carthay Circle Restaurant, where we devoured Fire Cracker Duck Wings and delicious Fried Biscuits, and shared our favourite Disney moments. It had been such a wonderful experience travelling with some of Toronto’s loveliest people, that le bf and I truly did not want to leave.

After dinner, we had 40 minutes before the famous World of Color show, so we decided to do one final run on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. While in line to get on the ride, I may or may not have made a joke about getting stuck on the ride, and what do you know?! WE GOT STUCK! Well, not actually stuck, but stopped for safety reasons before we could even go up. But no matter, after about 20 minutes, we were ushered into another lift, and we still had a blast, and made sure to pose at the top for a very memorable pic…and we even got strangers to pose along with us! Without a doubt, the Tower of Terror was my favourite ride in the park…some people in our group even rode it FIVE times!

twilight-zone-tower-of-terror

After our terrifying (not really) experience, we literally ran back as fast as we could (heels and all) to watch the World of Color, and to be honest with you, there was no better way to end our trip than with that beautiful show. There were animated characters illuminated on fountain streams, songs that we all knew and loved, and even FIRE! It felt like the Bellagio show on steroids, mixed with our favourite Disney films, and it was spectacular. Definitely a must-see!

Still in awe from the show, we went on a few more rides, before walking back to our hotel and calling it a night. Our last day in Disneyland, just like the rest of the trip was nothing short of amazing…from our gorgeous hotel suite, to the unexpectedly gourmet food, to having breakfast with Chip and Dale, to running around like sugar-high kids from one amazing ride to the next – it was all so much fun, that le bf and I promised each other that we’ll have to come back again…and again to The Happiest Place on Earth.

What I Wore: Where To Eat at Disneyland

3 September, 2013 Nelia

black-ruffle-dress-asos-napa-rose

The second thing I was pleasantly surprised to discover at Disneyland was all of the delicious food they have at the parks, and Disney hotels. Thinking that there would mainly be kiddo-friendly fare, I went in with low expectations, only to be blown away by all the amazing restaurants instead.

One of the first places we got to experience was the Grand Californian’s Napa Rose. A grown-ups-friendly restaurant, Napa Rose is a slice of seafood heaven in Anaheim. The freshest seafood I’ve eaten in a while, prepared in creative and absolutely scrumptious ways, this was one restaurant I would absolutely love to return to! Le bf and I got to try the scallops (yum!), mushroom bisque soup (best ever!!!), the lobster tempura tiger salad (only tried a litte bit, because SOMEONE gobbled it up before I could even say LOBSTER, but I loved the spicy kick), and other various appetizers. We were all very impressed with both the level of service, and the food. Totally unexpected, and so good. Highly, highly recommended!

black-ruffle-dress-asos-napa-rose-4

Apart from Napa Rose, we’ve also eaten at another Grand Californian restaurant – Storytellers Cafe, where we had brunch with Disney characters like Chip & Dale, Miko, and more. Super cheesy, super awesome! They served an impressive selection of breakfast foods (buffet-style), complete with Mickey-shaped waffles, and made-to-order omelettes. After this breakfast, you won’t need lunch…that’s a promise!

Two more places that we loved on this trip were the Blue Bayou inside Disneyland Park, with drool-worthy short ribs and jambalaya, and Carthay Circle inside Disney California Adventure Park, with a decadent old-Hollywood glamour feel, and fantastic food to match. At Carthay, we feasted on pork dumplings, yummy ceviche, more scallops, duck wings, short rib ravioli, and risotto. So. Damn. Good.

So if you thought that Disneyland is all churros and french fries, think again. The place is chock-full of fantastic restaurants and cafes, for both kids and adults alike! Who knew?!

As for the outfit…I wore this dress to dinner at Napa Rose, and to watch the nightly fireworks at Disneyland after. We were amazed by the beautiful fireworks synchronized to our favourite Disney songs. It’s a total MUST SEE! Just make sure to get there early to grab a good seat – the place gets jam packed! But it’s so worth it!

Shopping: 5 Pieces Worth Splurging On

15 August, 2013 Nelia

Investment-Pieces-Bag

I often get questions from friends and readers alike, asking me to cover what I consider investment pieces – expensive clothing and accessories that aren’t a waste of money. And while  most of the usual “investment” pieces aren’t really that great of an investment if you are looking to make a monetary return, in my opinion, sometimes it pays to spend a little (or even a lot) more on something that will make you happy for a long time, something of superior quality and craftsmanship, something that you could eventually pass down to your grandchildren. So if you are looking to buy something of substance, here are my top 5 pieces worth splurging on, and brands to invest in.

1. Quality Bag

A great quality bag is a must-have for any (and every) working woman out there. Unlike men, we really do need a place to stash our wallet/lipstick/compact/iPad/iPhone/book/snacks/keys/life…A woman’s bag is something that gets used day after day, so why not make it a great one? A timeless high-quality bag is definitely my number one investment piece to consider. Yes, a cheaper one would certainly do the job, but if you consider cost-per-wear (total price paid divided by the number of times the item is used), even a pricey purse could be affordable. If you love your bag, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll wear it everywhere and with everything. And given the quality of your investment, you’ll have it for years to come instead of being used up and thrown out like a cheaper version.

If you are going to make the leap and buy an expensive bag, you should consider its longevity. You don’t want to buy a super-trendy piece, only to realize that it’s totally passé three months later. Invest in a classic shape, and a solid colour. It doesn’t have to be “boring” black (although black is the most versatile), but make sure to pick a colour that you could pair with a few things in your wardrobe, and one that would make you smile too.

Brands To Invest In: Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga, Hermès, YSL

Investment-Pieces-Statement-Accessory

2. Heirloom

Whether it be a luxurious timepiece, or a pair of  in-your-face of sunnies, every woman should have a statement accessory to make her outfits pop. Investing in a piece of jewelry, or an accessory that will surely become an heirloom some day down the road is much better than spending the same amount of money on a pile of fast fashion baubles that will break or become discoloured after a couple of uses.

One of my fave pieces in my jewellery box is a turquoise YSL Arty ring. Every time I wear it, I get compliments left and right, and I have yet to find an outfit I couldn’t spice up with that pretty cocktail ring. Same goes for my classic Chanel brooch – so far, I’ve pinned it to my blazers, shirts, and sweaters, but it can also be worn as a necklace, and a faux belt buckle. Don’t you wish your mom or grandma passed down something like that to you?

Brands To Invest In: Cartier, Tiffany and Co, Chanel, Prada, YSL

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2013

7 May, 2013 Nelia

met-gala-2013-punk-katy-perry-dolce-gabbana

This year’s Met Gala theme was “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”, and since so many of the celebs in attendance nailed it, I couldn’t simply post my fave looks and be done with it. This time, I chose to bring you not only my fave looks, but also the runners-up, and the headscratchers all in one post.

Let’s start with my faves. I loved the ornate Dolce and Gabbana dress on Katy Perry, the grand headpiece on SJP, the elegant Margiela on Gwen Stefani, the stunning, but decidedly NOT punk Givenchy gown on Rooney Mara, and an orange moomoo-like goodness on Ashley Olsen. None of those looks screamed punk to me, but I found these dresses to be interesting, fashion-forward, and gorgeous too. Well, SJP’s panty-flashing Giles gown wasn’t exactly my type, but if anyone could’ve pulled it off it’s her.

Apart from my top 5, I enjoyed so many other looks! From Giovanna Battaglia gilded head-to-toe goodness, to Solange Knowles looking lovely in a Kenzo gown that was perhaps a tad too casual for the Met, but beautiful nonetheless, to Emma Watson in a very sexy Prabal Gurung…there was no shortage of fashion porn at this year’s gala. Some celebs decided to don simple LBDs to the event, which in my opinion was a total waste (I’m looking at you, Michelle Williams), but others made up for it with punk hair (Miley Cyrus), and studs galore (looking gorgeous, Sienna Miller!).

All in all, I loved this year’s fashion offerings. I hate wading through a million photos of boring outfits, and this year there weren’t too many.

So now it’s your turn! Which celebs brought their A-game to the 2013 Costume Institute Gala, and which crashed and burned? Share your opinions in the comments!

Style Fille: Adele at the Grammys

Adele-Valentino-Grammys-2013

In love with Adele’s Valentino dress that she wore to the Grammy Awards this year. Such a beautiful print, and the cut looks really comfy too. Also…looks a little like a carpet, but it might be the reason I love it.

Tommy Ton for Saks Fifth Avenue Spring 2013 Shoes!

4 February, 2013 Nelia

tommy-ton-saks-spring-2013-shoes

Speaking of gorgeous spring shoes…check out this amazing spread shot by the Canadian street style photog Tommy Ton for Saks Fifth Avenue! Featuring some drool-worthy styles by Salvatore Ferragamo, Fendi, Valentino, Altuzarra, Jil Sander, Derek Lam, and more, these photos are making me drool all over my laptop!

Right now, I am straight up OBSESSED with these lace-up Ferragamos. They are insanely hot, and I need them in my life ASAP. The heel looks super high, but the design also looks sturdy and secure, so I probably wouldn’t break my ankle. Just in case, I’d like these flat snakeskin Valentinos as well…you know, to mix it up!

What do you think about this photo spread? Are you getting excited for spring? Do tell!

Monica-Bellucci-TIFF12

Toronto International Film Festival has come and gone, and though it’s been both exhausting and exhilarating, I can’t wait until next year’s film fun fest. But before we say good-bye to the films and the stars, here’s a look at just a few celebs that descended upon this city in all their stylish glory. From my fave style fille Diane Kruger, to glorious Monica Bellucci, to fresh-faced Emma Watson, to stunning Kristen Stewart, I had a great time going through the outfits, and choosing my faves!

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala: Worst Dressed

8 May, 2012 Nelia

kirsten-dunst-rodarte-met-2012

After unsuccessfully trying to narrow down the Met’s Costume Gala 2012 Worst Dressed list to 5 celebs, I gave up and included all 6 outfits that I found either too boring, too ill-fitting, or too reminiscent of Santa’s wifey.

Yeah, I’m referring to Kirsten Dunst in that last one. When I first saw her Rodarte outfit, I actually kinda (really) liked it. And I almost put her on my Best Dressed list, until…it hit me! She looks like Mrs. Claus!!! If this was a different color combo, I would’ve loved it…but in this light, in this photo, it looks like Kirsten is rocking a look straight out of Mrs. Santa’s closet. Once I saw it, that’s the only thing I could focus on.

gwyneth-paltrow-met-2012-prada

Oh, Gwyneth. I love you…and generally, you bring some serious style-porn. But not this time. This Prada dress made your boobs look saggy, and though you’ve got some gorgeous gams to show off, I found this dress ill-fitting, and a bit too short for you. Oh well, can’t win them all. Great accessories though.

coco-rocha-met-2012-elizabeth-taylor-givenchy

I wanted to love Coco Rocha’s vintage Givenchy jumpsuit, previously owned by Elizabeth Taylor. I tried to like it…but I just just couldn’t. I think it might be the awkward length, that probably worked like a charm on someone petite (like Elizabeth Taylor), but looks all wrong on Coco. And let’s face it, had we not known that this jumpsuit belonged to Elizabeth Taylor, would this outfit have gotten as much attention? I don’t think so. Also, that dyed-to-match hair? What was she thinking?

anja-rubik-met-2012

So, Anja Rubik…we get it, you’re a gorgeous model with a banging body…but when your slit goes all the way to your hip bones, and we can almost see your “humanity”, and when even Angelina Jolie thinks that you’re posing a bit too hard…perhaps it’s time to stitch that shit up…at least a couple of inches.

sjp-met-gala-2012-valentino

It breaks my heart to rag on SJP, but it has to be said…”Oh, honey, NO!”. Ok, now I feel better. Maybe on a leggy supermodel, with an up-do, and a few minor alterations, this vintage Valentino could be…interesting…but SJP drowns in it, looking more like fashion roadkill than fashion inspiration.

kristen-stewart-balenciaga-met-2012

And lastly, we have what probably is one of the most controversial outfits of the Met Gala 2012 – Kristen Stewart in Balenciaga. I won’t lie…I kinda like the dress, and I really like the shoes…but not together, and not at the Met, and not on Kristen. With her body and youth, I am sure Kristen’s options were plentiful…and out of everything she was offered, she chose THIS? Sorry, Kristen…maybe next year.

Wishlist: Valentino Studded Flat Sandals

23 March, 2012 Nelia

valentino-stud-flat-sandals

As I enter the final stages of my honeymoon prep, I am still stuck trying to find a pair of cute and comfy flats to bring with me. A pair that would go with all (or most of) my outfits, and wouldn’t mangle my feet. I’ve been looking for a while…when I saw them.

These gorgeous Valentino Studded Leather Flat Sandals ($845) are perfection in a pair of lovely gladiator-style flats. And if not for their ridiculously high price tag…they would be mine in a heartbeat. Alas…they are crazy expensive…and therefore will probably stay on my wishlist forever…or until it’s time for summer sales.

Don’t you just hate it when you find something perfect, and yet it’s still out of your reach? I think it’s time to start playing the lottery!

Winners Spring 2012 Preview

30 January, 2012 Nelia

In case you needed a reminder…it’s almost February. And what does that mean? Only a couple of months until spring! Hooray! Earlier this month, I attended Winners’ Spring 2012 Preview, showcasing some of the cutest and most affordable spring clothes I’ve seen in a while. From flirty dresses, to lovely shoes, to swimsuits-galore, to colorful denim (under $20 no less) – there’s definitely something for everyone! And I seriously can’t wait to see it all in stores. Actually, some of the pieces are already available at select locations nationwide, like the below Missoni-esque dress, which I’d spotted last week at the Bloor St. location.

I also spotted more than a few amazing high-end designer pieces, which in Toronto, should be available at Bloor St, College St, and Queen St (and Portland) locations…I certainly wouldn’t mind adding a lacy Valentino frock to my wardrobe…or a pair of grey lacy pants. Simply gorgeous!

Do you shop at Winners often? Which location is your favorite for scoring the best deals? Share your tips in the comments.

To see more photos from the preview, please visit our Facebook Page.
