What I Wore: Off To The Races

9 July, 2015 Nelia

queens-plate-2015-fashion-17
Last Sunday was my first time at the Queen’s Plate, but it certainly won’t be my last. I loved everything about my experience at the racetrack – from dressing up, to bidding on horses, to people-watching, to enjoying everything the Hats and Horseshoes party had to offer – it was truly a blast!

I did have a moment of panic about 30 minutes before leaving the house…and ended up completely changing my outfit, and also MacGyvering a fascinator from a large flower purchased at Homesense, old headband, discarded ribbon, and 2 hair elastics. Though le bf looked at me as if I was insane, I did end up getting a ton of compliments on my DIY headpiece, and it was even featured in Toronto Star’s Queen’s Plate hat line-up. Take that, le bf!

Once we got to Woodbine Racetrack, we were a bit overwhelmed by all the action happening all around us – food trucks selling yummy bites, various party tents with things to do and people to see, wine and beer tastings, fancy hats for sale, and that’s before we even stepped foot inside the main building! We found our way to the Rethink Breast Cancer tent, where we spent most of our day. It had everything – DIY fascinator station, manis courtesy of The Ten Spot, fashion illustrators drawing partygoers’ outfits (mine was done by the talented Danielle Meder!), sweet and savoury treats, silent auctions, Be Good gelato cart…it was THE PLACE TO BE!

But of course, the track provided even more entertainment! Knowing close to nothing about horse races, I decided that my strategy would be to bid on contenders with fun names and/or my lucky number 8, which is how I ended up picking Aldous Snow and Conquest Boogaloo, and actually winning!

Overall, we had a wonderful time at the races. Queen’s Plate is quickly becoming one of the top summer events, and now I know why. I was told that each year it gets bigger and better, and I can’t wait to see what next year’s Queen’s Plate will have in store.

What They Wore: Cannes 2015 Best Dressed

20 May, 2015 Nelia

Cannes-2015-Poppy-Delevingne
I love Cannes fashion. Most of the time celebs aren’t afraid to make style statements on the croisette, and we get to feast our eyes on over-the-top gowns, as well as the more subdued, real-life-appropriate day outfits. It’s a win-win!

This year, I found the fashions particularly inspiring, with some of the world’s most stylish leading ladies all over the red carpet, I had a tough time picking my faves. Diane Kruger, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sienna Miller, Lupita Nyong’o, and many others brought their A-game to Cannes, and it was glorious.

I know that the festival isn’t over just yet, and I’ll update this post as more photographs become available, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy Poppy Delevingne in her exquisite CHANEL gown, the always regal Cate Blanchett in an otherworldly Giles creation, Diane Kruger in the most adorable Dolce and Gabbana dress, and many more.

Share your faves in comments and stay tuned for more beautiful looks from Cannes 2015!

What I Wore: Solange, Coco, and Minnie…Oh My!

5 November, 2014 Nelia

wmcfw-day-1-spring-2015

Another WMCFW season has come and gone, and this time I found myself at the tents every single day, and saw more shows than I normally would have. As such, my full fashion week recap is going to be up sometime next week, with my fave new designers, outstanding pieces, and fave collections, as well as the beauty recap from our contributor Aleyda. But for now, here’s a post about all of the fun outfits I wore to the tents last month.

Thanks to a slew of wonderful photographers like Ania Boniecka, Aleyah Solomon, Jenna Marie Wakani, Ryan Emberley and Stefania Yarhi, among others, I was able to document every look from a variety of angles and lenses…candid and not. It’s a bit of an exercise in narcissism, but hey, this is a style blog, what did you expect?! Let’s get to it, shall we?

On day 1, I ran into the lovely Talia Brown, and we were snapped together for FLARE Magazine. I didn’t bother with my outfit on day 1 – mainly because I had a very intense day at the office, so I simply swapped my ankle booties for a pair of ALDO heels, and my work bag for an ela clutch, and that was it.

After the shows, we were treated to a VIP party courtesy of Joe Fresh, with Solange Knowles on turntables. We were literally inches away from this stylish beauty, but I’m still not sure if waiting nearly 3 hours for the privilege was worth it. My feet were crying by the time I got home.

On Day 2, I actually managed to change out of my office clothes, and into a fun faux leather overalls from H&M. Knowing that a Minnie Mouse party was in the cards, I made sure to grab my trusty sequinned Minnie ears, which completed my look that day. To add a bit of Canadian flare to my outfit, I wore one of my fave falconwright clutches to the tents.

Wishlist: Kate Spade Vita Riva Wicker Lemon Bag

Kate-Spade-Wicker-Lemon-Shoulder-Bag

Ever since I laid eyes on this adorable wicker Kate Spade lemon bag, I’ve been dreaming of Sorrento and ginormous Sorrentine lemons. And now, fresh off my French Riviera vacation, I find myself yearning for Sorrento all the more. And while I probably can’t take another couple of weeks off right now, maybe having this bag on my shoulder will make pretending like I am on vacation just a little easier. Don’t you think?

And if like me, you love citrusy fashions, I picked out several other fruity bags to make your summer a little sweeter. Enjoy!

Style Fille: Cate Blanchett in Cannes 2014

16 May, 2014 Nelia

cate-blanchett-delpozo-cannes-2014

The moment I saw that Delpozo outfit that Cate Blanchett wore at Cannes this year, I knew I had to post about it. I am freaking IN LOVE with this entire look, but if I could just get my hands on that top, I would wear it all the time…ALL THE TIME! So after my initial OMFGINEEDTHISSHELOOKSSOGOOD freakout was over, I decided to see what else Cate The Great wore at Cannes, and here it is…or rather here they are – three looks from one festival – all perfect.

Apart from the casual-ish Delpozo look, Cate also wore a stunning Givenchy gown that stole my heart away, and an elaborate Valentino creation that I suppose could look a bit boring and been-there-done-that, but not on Cate. Somehow, whatever this woman wears ends up looking better, more regal, more expensive… And thus, I love all three looks. Do you? Tell me which Cannes outfit is your fave in the comments, and if you see that scalloped Delpozo top on sale (or a similar one), please give me a shout. I NEED IT IN MY LIFE!

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2014

6 May, 2014 Nelia

liu-wen-zac-posen-met-gala-dress-2014

What’s more important – adhering to a dress code or bringing something fresh to the red carpet? Last night at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, some celebs decided to pay homage to the celebrated American designer Charles James, while others chose to wear something exciting instead. No shade to James, but after seeing one too many taffeta-clad celebs, I cheered when I glimpsed Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada amazingness. Sure, it wasn’t exactly inspired by Charles James, but it was fun to look at, and if anyone could pull off the bejeweled net dress with feathers, it’s Lupita. Same goes for Kirsten Dunst’s Rodarte Star Wars gown – amazing, and probably not the most appropriate for that particular theme, but still…so cool! Another look I couldn’t resist last night was Chloe Sevigny in Kenzo, which was probably much too modern for last night’s theme, but I loved it all the same.

But it wasn’t solely the rebels that caught my eye, I absolutely adored Liu Wen in a Zac Posen stunner (which I just got to see at Holts last week!), Emmy Rossum in a floral Carolina Herrera gown, Giovanna Battaglia in an 0ff-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana, and Hailee Steinfeld in a very theme-(and age)-appropriate black, white, and pink Prabal Gurung gown.

Mostly though, I was underwhelmed with last night’s red carpet looks. My favourite Style Fille Diane Kruger looked washed out in pale blue (though Joshua more than made up for it!), SJP disappointed in a messy Oscar de la Renta, Johnny Depp came dressed as Colonel Sanders, Kate Upton, who isn’t exactly a high-fashion darling, looked frumpy in a Dolce & Gabbana gown, and the rest of the lot just looked…been-there-wore-that.

What do you think of last night’s Met Gala red carpet? Which celebs got it right in your opinion? Share in the comments!

What I Wore: Are We There Yet?

31 March, 2014 Nelia

ann-taylor-mesh-black-skirt-3

After a few weeks of staring at this Ann Taylor skirt hanging in my closet looking lonely, I just couldn’t resist taking it out for a spin as soon as the temperatures went up. I have to confess that I did have a warm coat over the leather jacket, but for a few minutes I got to pretend that it’s leather-jacket weather, and that patio weather is just around the corner. And though it’ll take another couple of weeks before I get to wear this skirt more often, this is definitely a promising start. Is spring really here?! I can almost feel it!

Style Fille: Diane Kruger in Valentino Couture

12 December, 2013 Nelia

diane-kruger-valentino-couture

As you may have noticed, there hasn’t been a Diane Kruger fashion post on this site for a while now. I was starting to go through Kruger withdrawal, until I finally noticed this outfit, and all was right with the world again. This Valentino Couture gown is a work of art. So what if you can see her black panties? It’s still an exquisite gown on an exquisite woman. As usual, Diane was smart to keep the hair and make-up toned down and let the dress shine instead. Don’t you wish you had one of these in your closet? The dress! Not Diane Kruger, silly.

What I Wore: Perfect Leather Pants

2 December, 2013 Nelia

In case you didn’t know…the perfect leather pants do exist! And they are from the Isabel Marant for H&M collection. I am so glad that I braved the crowds in order to snag these, because now that I have them, I want to wear them all the time! Luckily, these don’t make me feel like I have to use a bottle of baby powder to put them on – these leather pants are as comfy as pajama bottoms. Well…nearly. How do you feel about leather pants? Share in the comments.

What I Wore: Fashion Weak

30 October, 2013 Nelia

wmcfw-day-1-spring-2014

Toronto Fashion Week came and went, and as it happens every October, I caught a cold. I am not sure if it’s the skimpy-ish outfits that one ends up wearing all week, or all of the hugs and kisses from the people I haven’t seen in a while (a week or longer is an eternity!), but…oops, it happened again.

This season, I did my darnedest to stay warm at the tents – I wore sensible outerwear, I kept my toes hidden, but none of it helped. Next October I will wrap myself up like a mummy in a mish-mash of blankets, hats, and mittens, and will only give hand-waves and peace signs, instead of hugs, handshakes, and kisses. This blogger is sick and tired of being sick and tired.

BUT…despite being a cold weather lightweight, I still got some pretty great fashion week mementos, thanks to Max Kopanygin, and Stefania Yarhi – talented Canadian street style photogs, who were outside all week long, shooting tirelessly rain or shine (and I didn’t even see them sniffling). I may be a weakling…but at least my new What I Wore photos look great. Silver linings, anyone?
