UPDATE: It’s been officially confirmed that UNIQLO will indeed be opening their first Canadian store at Yorkdale in Fall 2016.
“Entering the Canadian market is a milestone for the company and a significant step in our growth strategy,” said Larry Meyer, CEO of UNIQLO USA and Canada. “Our first two stores in the great City of Toronto will mark the launch of the UNIQLO brand in Canada, which we aim to build upon thereafter with a presence in the lovely city of Vancouver.”
If you are a fan of the Japanese Gap, otherwise known as Uniqlo, then you’re in luck! Well, kind of. It’s been reported that the Japanese fashion retailer is currently in talks to open their first Canadian store in 2016.
“Uniqlo is negotiating a deal to lease a 35,000 square foot space in north Toronto’s high-traffic Yorkdale mall, industry sources said. “The negotiations are pretty advanced,” said one source familiar with the talks, who added Uniqlo aims to open both mall-based and street-front stores in this market.”
As Yorkdale’s Style Council member, I am both delighted and not very surprised that Uniqlo would choose Yorkdale as their springboard into the Canadian market, as many other retailers have done recently. The shopping centre is undeniably the best in Toronto, with an amazing mix of high-end and affordable retailers, and yet another expansion in the works. And while nothing has been solidly confirmed just yet, I am feeling quite optimistic about this one.
