What They Wore: Met Gala 2015 Recap

5 May, 2015 Nelia

Robert-Pattinson-FKA-Twigs-Met-Gala-2015
Ok, so first things first – to me, The Met Gala is all about taking risks, embracing the theme, and going all out. This event is not the time to pull out your LBD, your prom dress (I’m looking at you, Elizabeth Banks!), or your ice-skating get up (unless the theme is ice-skating, that is). With that said, I don’t think Beyonce, who so many consider the Best Dressed of the evening, brought her A-game. She wore a gown that revealed a lot of skin, not unlike JLo, and completely failed at embracing the night’s theme – “China: Through the Looking Glass”, and while my top picks are probably not going to be crowd-pleasers, I firmly stand by my choices.

My top looks of the night included FKA Twigs in a crazy-cool Christopher Kane dress (yes that’s a penis, and no, Robert Pattinson does not deserve her hotness), Georgia May Jagger in an Asian-inspired Gucci robe, Solange in a Giles Deacon flying saucer amazingness, which totally did not adhere to the dress code, but was so bonkers I loved it, Chloe Sevigny in a very theme-appropriate JW Anderson creation that is sure to land her on some Worst Dressed lists, but I thought she pulled off flawlessly…I also loved Grace Coddington in silk pajamas. I know, it’s pajamas…but it’s Grace effing Coddington, and she had a flight right after…and she looks awesome and comfy.

In other Met Gala news, SJP wore a dress designed by H&M (!!!), and Emily Ratajkowski wore a pretty Topshop frock…fast fashion on the Met Gala red carpet? I never thought I’d see the day. I loved Dakota Johnson’s CHANEL handbag, which was super cute…and while her disco-ball dress did look smashing on her, perhaps she should’ve opted for something a little more fancy. I have to say that I didn’t love Rihanna’s “omelet” gown, but I’ll take it over what Kanye West’s wife wore any day…Also, there’s a photo I can’t find right now, one where Rihanna’s going up the red stairs and it looks like an image from a fairy tale. Points to RiRi for taking a risk.

I also thought Anne Hathaway, Miley Cyrus, Carey Mulligan, Diane Kruger, and Keri Russell deserve shout-outs for their awesome outfits last night…they weren’t my faves for the occasion, but were notable nonetheless. Lastly, Emily Blunt looked lovely in a caped Prada…but there’s something about this look that’s just not doing it for me…perhaps if it was in a different colour?

So here you have it, my recap of the Met Gala 2015…Share your faves after the jump!

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2014

6 May, 2014 Nelia

liu-wen-zac-posen-met-gala-dress-2014

What’s more important – adhering to a dress code or bringing something fresh to the red carpet? Last night at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, some celebs decided to pay homage to the celebrated American designer Charles James, while others chose to wear something exciting instead. No shade to James, but after seeing one too many taffeta-clad celebs, I cheered when I glimpsed Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada amazingness. Sure, it wasn’t exactly inspired by Charles James, but it was fun to look at, and if anyone could pull off the bejeweled net dress with feathers, it’s Lupita. Same goes for Kirsten Dunst’s Rodarte Star Wars gown – amazing, and probably not the most appropriate for that particular theme, but still…so cool! Another look I couldn’t resist last night was Chloe Sevigny in Kenzo, which was probably much too modern for last night’s theme, but I loved it all the same.

But it wasn’t solely the rebels that caught my eye, I absolutely adored Liu Wen in a Zac Posen stunner (which I just got to see at Holts last week!), Emmy Rossum in a floral Carolina Herrera gown, Giovanna Battaglia in an 0ff-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana, and Hailee Steinfeld in a very theme-(and age)-appropriate black, white, and pink Prabal Gurung gown.

Mostly though, I was underwhelmed with last night’s red carpet looks. My favourite Style Fille Diane Kruger looked washed out in pale blue (though Joshua more than made up for it!), SJP disappointed in a messy Oscar de la Renta, Johnny Depp came dressed as Colonel Sanders, Kate Upton, who isn’t exactly a high-fashion darling, looked frumpy in a Dolce & Gabbana gown, and the rest of the lot just looked…been-there-wore-that.

What do you think of last night’s Met Gala red carpet? Which celebs got it right in your opinion? Share in the comments!

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2013

7 May, 2013 Nelia

met-gala-2013-punk-katy-perry-dolce-gabbana

This year’s Met Gala theme was “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”, and since so many of the celebs in attendance nailed it, I couldn’t simply post my fave looks and be done with it. This time, I chose to bring you not only my fave looks, but also the runners-up, and the headscratchers all in one post.

Let’s start with my faves. I loved the ornate Dolce and Gabbana dress on Katy Perry, the grand headpiece on SJP, the elegant Margiela on Gwen Stefani, the stunning, but decidedly NOT punk Givenchy gown on Rooney Mara, and an orange moomoo-like goodness on Ashley Olsen. None of those looks screamed punk to me, but I found these dresses to be interesting, fashion-forward, and gorgeous too. Well, SJP’s panty-flashing Giles gown wasn’t exactly my type, but if anyone could’ve pulled it off it’s her.

Apart from my top 5, I enjoyed so many other looks! From Giovanna Battaglia gilded head-to-toe goodness, to Solange Knowles looking lovely in a Kenzo gown that was perhaps a tad too casual for the Met, but beautiful nonetheless, to Emma Watson in a very sexy Prabal Gurung…there was no shortage of fashion porn at this year’s gala. Some celebs decided to don simple LBDs to the event, which in my opinion was a total waste (I’m looking at you, Michelle Williams), but others made up for it with punk hair (Miley Cyrus), and studs galore (looking gorgeous, Sienna Miller!).

All in all, I loved this year’s fashion offerings. I hate wading through a million photos of boring outfits, and this year there weren’t too many.

So now it’s your turn! Which celebs brought their A-game to the 2013 Costume Institute Gala, and which crashed and burned? Share your opinions in the comments!

Halloween 2012: Last-Minute Costumes

25 October, 2012 Nelia

halloween-2012-anna-dello-russo-costume

Halloween is next week, and as always, I won’t be spending money on a costume. Instead, I’ll rifle through my closet to pull together a last-minute outfit. This year, there are four options that I’m considering.

1. Anna Dello Russo

Perhaps it’s not very original to dress up as Anna Dello Russo anymore, but with the recent Anna Dello Russo at H&M collection still in stores, it’s never been easier to dress up as this colorful editor. Stack those bangles, rock that feathered headpiece, grab a stuffed chihuahua toy, and a shower head…and shower your fabulous fashion advice onto everyone you meet. After all, who doesn’t need a fashion shower?

halloween-2012-marc-jacobs-met-costume

2. Marc Jacobs at the MET Gala

Already lampooned by Seth Meyers, this one is fairly easy to pull together. All you need is a see-through black lace dress with long sleeves, a pair of white boxers, some chunky heels, and a Spongebob tattoo (sticker will suffice). If you can’t find a lace dress, a pink polo dress is a good option too!

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala: Worst Dressed

8 May, 2012 Nelia

kirsten-dunst-rodarte-met-2012

After unsuccessfully trying to narrow down the Met’s Costume Gala 2012 Worst Dressed list to 5 celebs, I gave up and included all 6 outfits that I found either too boring, too ill-fitting, or too reminiscent of Santa’s wifey.

Yeah, I’m referring to Kirsten Dunst in that last one. When I first saw her Rodarte outfit, I actually kinda (really) liked it. And I almost put her on my Best Dressed list, until…it hit me! She looks like Mrs. Claus!!! If this was a different color combo, I would’ve loved it…but in this light, in this photo, it looks like Kirsten is rocking a look straight out of Mrs. Santa’s closet. Once I saw it, that’s the only thing I could focus on.

gwyneth-paltrow-met-2012-prada

Oh, Gwyneth. I love you…and generally, you bring some serious style-porn. But not this time. This Prada dress made your boobs look saggy, and though you’ve got some gorgeous gams to show off, I found this dress ill-fitting, and a bit too short for you. Oh well, can’t win them all. Great accessories though.

coco-rocha-met-2012-elizabeth-taylor-givenchy

I wanted to love Coco Rocha’s vintage Givenchy jumpsuit, previously owned by Elizabeth Taylor. I tried to like it…but I just just couldn’t. I think it might be the awkward length, that probably worked like a charm on someone petite (like Elizabeth Taylor), but looks all wrong on Coco. And let’s face it, had we not known that this jumpsuit belonged to Elizabeth Taylor, would this outfit have gotten as much attention? I don’t think so. Also, that dyed-to-match hair? What was she thinking?

anja-rubik-met-2012

So, Anja Rubik…we get it, you’re a gorgeous model with a banging body…but when your slit goes all the way to your hip bones, and we can almost see your “humanity”, and when even Angelina Jolie thinks that you’re posing a bit too hard…perhaps it’s time to stitch that shit up…at least a couple of inches.

sjp-met-gala-2012-valentino

It breaks my heart to rag on SJP, but it has to be said…”Oh, honey, NO!”. Ok, now I feel better. Maybe on a leggy supermodel, with an up-do, and a few minor alterations, this vintage Valentino could be…interesting…but SJP drowns in it, looking more like fashion roadkill than fashion inspiration.

kristen-stewart-balenciaga-met-2012

And lastly, we have what probably is one of the most controversial outfits of the Met Gala 2012 – Kristen Stewart in Balenciaga. I won’t lie…I kinda like the dress, and I really like the shoes…but not together, and not at the Met, and not on Kristen. With her body and youth, I am sure Kristen’s options were plentiful…and out of everything she was offered, she chose THIS? Sorry, Kristen…maybe next year.

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2012: Best Yellow

7 May, 2012 Nelia

january-jones-versace-met-2012

As a huge fan of the color yellow, I got really excited when I saw both of these ladies rocking my favorite hue. But when it came time to choosing my fave between January Jones in Versace (and turquoise Cartier necklace!!!) and Solange Knowles in a simple and elegant Rachel Roy gown…I just couldn’t decide. So guess what, ladies and gents? I’m going to let you choose the best yellow of the Met Gala.

Take your pick below.

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2012: Best Dressed

7 May, 2012 Nelia

met-costume-institute-gala-2012-giovanna_battaglia-dolce-gabbana

I am not exactly sure if we’re going to see eye-to-eye on my Best Dressed picks from the Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2012. But here they come. My number one pick for Best Dressed is Giovanna Battaglia in a floral Dolce and Gabbana gown, topped off with a floral crown (my recent obsession). She looks breathtaking…and a little Frida-Kahlo-esque…and I love everything about her look.

diane-kruger-prada-met-2012

Diane Kruger (in a floor-sweeping Prada number) can do no wrong in my eyes. She looks stunning, no? Interesting enough, but not crazy. I love the dress, the accessories, the hair and the makeup. Brava, Diane! Brava!

chloe-sevigny-miu-miu-met-2012

And then we have the yin to Diane’s yang. There’s something slightly off about this Miu Miu outfit that Chloe Sevigny has chosen for the Met Gala, and yes, it’s a little crazy, but I still love it. It’s the antithesis of boring. And while it might not be the classiest of getups, I kinda…not-so-secretly wish I could pull something like this off. So because of Chloe’s guts (or her stylist’s), I give this look two thumbs up.

rooney-mara-met-2012-givenchy

Rooney Mara in Givenchy is another one of my Best Dressed picks, because I really love what she has going on here. The hair and makeup really suit the dress, and I like that she went easy on the jewels…or rather, went jewel-less. There’s something weird going on in the crotch area…but I am willing to shrug it off as a photo-mishap.

ginnifer-goodwin-monique-lhuillier-met-2012

How gorgeous did Ginnifer Goodwin look in that Monique Lhuillier gown? So pretty, right? I wish she’d smile a little, and not look so annoyed and/or grim in photos. Come on, Ginny! It’s a ball! You have a pretty dress on! You’re dating an effing prince! Ok, not a real prince, but it still counts…I think. Either way, she’s still a fave of mine, and I love this dress (and the color) on her so much!

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2011: Best

3 May, 2011 Nelia

There’s no night like the Met’s Costume Institute Gala for fashion porn. To me, not even the Oscars can compete with THE  fashion event that is Met Ball. Which is why, year after year, I keep hoping for more drama, more choices that aren’t exactly safe – something eye-popping, gorgeous, and not boo-ring. This year, there were so many champagne color safe gowns, some really beautiful (Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney), others (cough*Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney*cough) not so much, but all withouth exception – boring, boring, boring. And though the idea of “Best Dressed” is really a matter of preference and opinion, here are my top 5 best-dressed ladies of the night.

1. Ginnifer Goodwin in Topshop Unique

Lovely pop of color and that beautiful face with perfect makeup, and her new-ish pixie. This one was my favorite look of the night.

2. Diane Kruger in Jason Wu

You already know that I love me some Diane. And I felt that her super-high thigh-slit and those gorgeous gams of hers really made this look. So hot!

3. Margherita Missoni in Missoni

A dress that is part sorbet buffet and part Swan Lake…I’m all over it! Love her choice of accessories, and that messy bun. Such a fun, fresh, young look. Love it!

4. Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen

This was rather understated for ADR, no? But I still loved her take on feminine tuxedo-dressing, egg-headpiece and all.

5. Liv Tyler in Givenchy Couture

The entire Spring 2011 Givenchy Couture collection was one of the best in a very long time, and this gown is definitely anything but boring. I love the color, the feathers, and the origami-like detailing. I wish I could wear something this beautiful one day. It’s exquisite!

Do you agree with my picks? Do you think they are hideous? Did you have some other favorites? Discuss in the comments?

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best

4 May, 2010 Nelia

Wow, with the exception of Coco Rocha’s Zac Posen aqua-delic gown, my other Best Dressed picks are all solids. Oh my! And while I do believe that it’s best to be brave for an event like the Met’s Gala, I cannot help but be drawn and inspired by these ladies (and gentleman). It is my Best Dressed list, after all, so please don’t hate me too much if we don’t see eye to eye.

Rocha’s Zac Posen gown is absolutely beautiful! I think it was a brave pick and I love Coco for it! My all-time fave Diane Kruger in Calvin Klein and her cute boyfriend Joshua Jackson both sizzled on the red carpet, and though her dress is very similar to the one Ashley Olsen wore last year, I think Diane makes it look fresh for 2010 with her minimalistic hair and accessories.

Kerry Washington in Thakoon for Gap looked red-hot, while Rachel Weisz in custom Oscar de la Renta looked so pretty and radiant – I had to include her in the lineup! And finally, Zoe…looking statuesque and gorgeous in her one-shouldered Calvin Klein gown – simplicity never looked better.

Do you agree with my picks? Do you think they are too safe? Sound off in the comments. Next up – the bold and the brave of the Met’s 2010 Gala!

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2010: Worst

4 May, 2010 Nelia

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala is a ball. It is also a candy-shop-like heaven for the fashion lovers, what with beautiful gowns and crème de la crème of celeb world. But when said celebs pick some disastrous outfits to wear on such an important night, it makes me wonder if they did that to get noticed and to stand out from the crowd.

Well, in Katy Perry’s case, one does not need to wonder. A romantic white dress that lights up in the dark screams for attention…and that necklace is all wrong for the neckline of the dress. In my humble opinion, Katy Perry is the fail of the night.

A few other notables are Vera Farmiga in an ill-fitted baby blue Sophie Theallet for Gap fit for a saloon, Malin Ackerman in a not-so-flattering black-and-white dress, complete with blah hair, Elizabeth Banks in a fashion-forward feathered Gucci number that she overaccessorized bringing it from cool to trying-too-hard territory, and last but not least – Carey Mulligan in Miu Miu – cute dress, wrong occasion (plus the color washes out her pretty face).

What do you think about these dresses? Are they the worst of the night or do you have a soft spot for some of them? Sound off in the comments!
