Met Gala 2016: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

3 May, 2016 Nelia

The first Monday in May is here and so is the annual Met Gala aka Fashion Oscars. After poring over hundreds of celeb pics, I have to say that it was probably one of my fave red carpets in a while…which is why I had such a tough time choosing my faves. This year, there were so many interesting dresses, I couldn’t narrow down my choices to the usual “best” and “worst”, and so, I am just going to post all of the looks that I’d found either exciting, or super boring/terrible, so that you can judge for yourself.

Perhaps the red carpet was extra exciting thanks to this year’s theme – Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Anna Wintour arrived wearing one of my fave looks from CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2016 collection, and knowing first-hand how important both technology and innovation are in creating a lot of the CHANEL looks, I loved her choice that much more. Other stand-outs included Solange in an origami-like David Laport frock of my dreams, Zoe Saldana sporting a gown with an exaggerated peacock-like train, Nicole Kidman in an ethereal caped creation, Kristen Stewart in yet another stunning CHANEL dress, Claire Danes in a glow-in-the-dark ball gown, and Lena Dunham, Jenna Lyons, and Jennifer Konner in custom-made J.Crew tuxes – so fresh and so cool, though perhaps not exactly adhering to the theme of the night.

I have to say that I was very disappointed to see Michelle Williams in a completely forgettable and way-too-casual dress, which was made even worse by her terrible new bangs and drab makeup – a rare misstep for this usually stylish actress. Other misses included Grimes in an ill-fitting dress and dishevelled hair, SJP in a puzzling get-up, Kerry Washington looking like she was going to a Halloween party dressed as a witch, and a whole bunch of people like Elle Fanning, Katie Holmes, Amber Heard, Emily Ratajkowski, Maria Sharapova, among others, who wore completely forgettable dresses, definitely not worthy of the Met Gala. Last, but not least, Taylor Swift, who was the co-chair of this year’s event, totally missed the mark in a cocktail dress that could have come from Banana Republic (no offence to Banana Republic, but it’s usually not Met Gala appropriate).

And there you have it, my faves and not-so-faves from this year’s Met Gala. Which looks did you like? Share your best and worst in the comments.

Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists of 2013!

Have you ever wondered how celebs end up choosing what to wear to those big award shows and movie premieres? Well, for the most part, you should praise (or blame) their stylist. The latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter features the 25 Most Powerful Stylists, photographed with some of their famous celeb clients, and I am both fascinated and obsessed.

Not surprisingly, the top stylists like Leslie Fremar (clients: Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson), Petra Flannery (clients: Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Mila Kunis, Megan Fox, Claire Danes), Rachel Zoe (clients: Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Hudson), Kate Young (Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman), and Elizabeth Stewart (clients: Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried, Cate Blanchett, Frieda Pinto) all have lengthy roasters of A-list celebs eager to be dressed by these talented and savvy pros.

For me, however, this year’s Most Awesome Stylist Award (just made it up) goes to Erin Walsh (#9 on the list), who dressed Kerry Washington on this year’s award and premiere circuit – hitting it out of the ballpark with every single outfit. “I feel like Erin and I are fashion twins that were separated at birth. We definitely like to think outside the box,” shared Washington with the magazine.

This article did make me wonder what those “uber-stylish” celebs would wear without the help of their trusted stylists. Would Cate Blanchett wear socks and sandals? Would Zoe Saldana wear leggings as pants? Can you imagine? The horror!

Taylor Swift for CoverGirl

3 May, 2010 Nelia

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful – Taylor Swift! Following in the famous footsteps of Christie Brinkley, Tyra Banks, Molly Sims, Queen Latifah, Ellen DeGeneres, Rihanna, and Drew Barrymore, Swift was announced as the new face of the beauty brand CoverGirl!

According to the press release, the 20-year-old, Grammy award-winning star has just finished shooting her first advertisements for the beauty giant, and will represent a new line of luxury products for the brand.  The ads are scheduled to debut in January 2011.

“I am so excited to become the next CoverGirl,” said Swift.  “I have admired many of the CoverGirls since I was a little girl . . . great artists and actresses who are confident and still themselves.  It’s like a dream come true to be a part of the future of CoverGirl”.

If you’ve been trying to come up with a fun and current Halloween costume this year, look no further! Geniuses at Newsweek came up with the top Halloween Costume predictions for 2009! Costume suggestions include the Balloon Boy, a few (allegedly) crooked politicos, a couple’s costume of Kanye West and Taylor Swift, Swine Flu (!) and the scariest of all…Lady Gaga! My fave is of course Bruno! If I were a guy, I would totally dress like him for Halloween this year! Not only is he totally fabulous, but imagine all the fun you can have harassing everyone around you?! Achhh ya!
