What I Wore: The First Long Weekend in May

18 May, 2017 Nelia

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”2678989″]
Victoria Day long weekend is just around the corner and for many Canadians this weekend marks the beginning of cottage season. While le bf and I aren’t cottage-owners, our usual Victoria Day long weekend plans involve packing our bags, renting a car, and driving to a hotel in Gravenhurst for a few days of sunshine, hiking, and swimming. Depending on the weather, my packing list for these trips is fairly uncomplicated – sweatshirts and comfy denim for chilly evenings, a dress or two for dinners out, a swimsuit, sunglasses, my fave HBC beach towels, beauty essentials, and a couple of easy to pack Tide PODS for clean laundry in a pinch (no musty towels for us!).

And since Victoria Day is the unofficial kick-off to cottage season, I partnered up with Tide to share the Cottage Laundry Care Guide for any upcoming weekend getaways you may have planned. Check it out after the jump!

What I Wore: #BeNice

14 May, 2017 Nelia

With Canada turning 150 this year, Roots has created the #BeNice campaign to celebrate Canadians who make this country a better place to live. You can nominate someone who deserves the title of Canada’s Nicest Person by sharing your stories on Facebook or Instagram and tagging @rootscanada with hashtags #BeNice and #RootsIsCanada. Canadian Olympic Champion Adam Van Koeverden will select the top 10 finalists, and it will then be up to the public to vote for who they believe is the nicest. The winner will be announced on June 20th, and will be recognized with a $10,000 donation to his or her charity of choice.

“We want to acknowledge those who embody Canadian nice – the kind of nice that takes guts, courage and strength,” says Van Koeverden. “We’re calling on Canadians to nominate nice and let us know who goes above and beyond to champion what they believe in to really make a difference.”

And while we’re on the topic of “nice”, Roots has also created the nice Button set ($3), with 100% of profits benefiting WE’s Indigenous Youth Empowerment Programming. For more info on Roots’ #BeNice campaign, upcoming events, celebrations, and art installations check out www.roots.com/nice!

What I Wore: Surprisingly Washable

Have you ever needed to wear something only to realize that it needs to be dry cleaned? Well, last weekend it happened to me. As I was prepping my outfit the night before a friend’s wedding, I realized that the silk H&M Studio dress I was planning to wear was not in wearable condition and needed to be cleaned STAT! Dry cleaning wasn’t an option (too late!), and so in my desperation I looked at the inside care label only to realize that despite its silk composition, the dress was surprisingly washable! Who would’ve thought?! And so I happily marched downstairs to the laundry room, threw in a Tide POD along with the dress (inside a delicates bag), and just washed it. As you can see, the dress was in perfect condition after the wash – fashion crisis averted!

When you start paying attention to those care labels, you’ll learn that a huge portion of your wardrobe is most likely surprisingly washable too. With #TideChic movement you can save a ton of money on dry cleaning bills, while giving your clothes the TLC they deserve. I’ve been using Tide PODS ever since they first launched, and the convenience as well as excellent results got me hooked…I don’t think I could ever go back to regular detergent. Downy Fabric Conditioner is another fave; it protects clothes at the fiber level and keeps them looking like new, extending the life of your favourite pieces…and it leaves them smelling so good!

So next time you throw that dress in your dry cleaning pile, make sure to check the care label and see if it’s washable…you may just be surprised! But don’t just take my word for it! Comment below if you’d like to try Tide PODS and Downy Fabric Conditioner for yourself, and you could win one of 3 #TideChic prize packs*!

What I Wore: Juicy Fruit

I try to wear as many Canadian pieces as I can during Toronto Fashion Week, but sometimes the cutest options in your wardrobe are from Zara and you just have to go with it. With the exception of a few accessories this entire look is from Zara…from that fun yellow moto jacket to the colourblock shoes, and I love it all. The hem fringe on the jeans is very trendy right now, the striped sweater is a new MVP in my wardrobe, and paired with my trusty faux fur Prada stole, the jacket looks a lot more expensive than it actually is. Funny enough, if my hair wasn’t a unicorn-technicolour-dream, I probably wouldn’t wear so many bright colours together all at once, but for some reason, having rainbow hair has given me a new kind of DGAF attitude, slime sunnies and all.

What I Wore: Sosken Studios Coat

21 March, 2016 Nelia

After a few very spring-like weeks of bare ankles and leather jackets, Toronto received a bit of a reality check. With temperatures plummeting, I had to re-think my fashion week outfits in order to avoid the dreaded fashion week flu. And secretly, I was actually a little excited, because instead of my usual leather jackets, I got to wear my new Sosken Studios Bali coat instead…straight off-the-runway! The new line designed by outerwear expert Marisa Minicucci is a glorious addition to the Canadian fashion landscape, with elegant silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and a great selection of colours. I’ll write more about the collection itself later this week, but in short, this collection is THEBOMB.COM!

And while I don’t usually go for muted shades very often, I fell in love with this oatmeal topper – it’s a classic piece that will stand the test of time, and will surely endure all of my future hair colour changes too. I love this coat so much, I feel a little sad that spring is coming. But regardless, this awesome coat is going to be in my closet waiting for temperatures to drop again. And when they do, I’ll be ready!

What I Wore: New Faves

Even though I wore this outfit in February, this is definitely more of a spring look if you ignore the fat snowflakes all around me. I’ll be wearing a variation of this a lot once the weather warms up in Toronto. I finally got my hands on the coveted Acne moto jacket, and I want to wear it ALL THE TIME. The leather is so buttery soft, and even though it’s a bit heavy, I feel like it elevates everything I wear. The dress is from H&M, and it’s also a fave – super comfy and cute…with or without tights. Finally, the shoes are surprisingly winter-friendly. When I was wandering the slushy streets of NYC, the platforms kept my feet from freezing and my ankles away from the snow and sleet. They also have a great amount of grip, so I didn’t slip and slide like I sometimes do when wearing heels. And I don’t know about you, but I totally used to wear similar flatforms when I was in high-school, as inspired by the Spice Girls. Circle of life?

What I Wore: Design Lab

It’s officially spring, and with any luck, pretty soon we’ll be able to put away our winter coats and boots, shed those opaque tights, and finally wear pretty clothes and shoes. I can’t wait! Recently, I got to preview Hudson’s Bay’s new Design Lab collection, chock-full of boho caftans, eyelet two-pieces in pretty pastel shades, faux suede, crochet, fringe, and lace…oh my! Checking out the collection made me feel even antsier about warmer temps – so many cute pieces to add to my closet!

I was lucky enough to pick my faves and take them out for a spin at Toronto’s Allan Gardens Conservatory – a place where it’s summer all year long. I chose this sassy floral two–piece, so stretchy and comfy, that it works even on a curvier girl like me. With an athletic-inspired lace bomber jacket, this is the perfect outfit for those warm spring days…brunch, date, whatever. And those blue flowers –instant pick-me-up!

Check out Hudson’s Bay’s Design Lab collection here and let me know which pieces you love!

What I Wore: Jumpsuit Up

28 May, 2014 Nelia

zara-jumpsuit-park-5

After searching for a pair of perfect denim overalls, I stumbled upon this Zara jumpsuit, and immediately fell in love. Instead of channeling J.Lo circa 2001, I decided to jumpsuit up in this simple, super comfy, and versatile one-piece instead. So far, I am seriously obsessed with it, and want to wear it all the time. And the best part is…I can! During the summer, I can pair it with short-sleeved tops. To dress it up, I’ll wear it with a tuxedo jacket and sky-high heels. And when it gets colder again – this leather jacket will save the day. So simple. It may just be the most versatile piece in my wardrobe.

So what about you? Would you wear a jumpsuit in your daily life? Or do you still prefer J.Lo’s denim one-piece? Share in the comments!

What I Wore: Orange You Glad It’s Spring?

8 May, 2014 Nelia

roksanda-ilincic-skirt-aldo-shoes-2

This Roksanda Ilincic skirt has been languishing at the back of my closet for months now. I bought it a while ago on sale at The Room, and have only worn it twice since. Mostly, because in my mind, this skirt length requires a pair of sky-high heels, or a pair of super long gams to pull it off. But last weekend, I just said FAHGEDABOUDID, and wore it with my new ALDO kitten heel shoes (UMANIEL if you’re curious), and I couldn’t be happier. The skirt’s material is thick (and warm) enough for our “spring” weather, and the waist is nice and high to give an appearance of legs-for-days. I love the print and colour of this skirt, and will have to make sure to pull it out of my closet more often.

So tell me, do you own those items – ones that you loved once, but couldn’t figure out how to wear, or ones that you’ve forgotten that you even own? Today, in the spirit of spring cleaning and all that, take a peek at the back of your closet and see what you can find. You may surprise yourself and find a new favourite! Happy closet shopping!

What I Wore: Bonjour, Mon Amour

25 April, 2014 Nelia

bonjour-tshirt-2

It’s FRIDAY!!! And I am super excited to get my weekend started. This is what I wore last weekend to grab some gelato with le bf, and hang out with my friend (and beauty contributor) Aleyda. The weather was lovely, the sun was shining, and I was feeling elated. Also, something to be happy about are these amazingly comfy boyfriend jeans from Zara that hang just right (though le bf disagrees), and can be dressed up or down. I think I’m going to live in them!

I also got to wear my treasured HBC Converse. They are an instant mood enhancer + conversation starter. People just feel so drawn to them. And no wonder – they are pretty perfect, non?

Anyway…hope y’all have an amazing Friday! Let’s get this weekend started!
