What I Wore: Photoshoot with Embryolisse

13 June, 2019 Nelia

When it comes to beauty products that work, French pharmacies is where it’s at. I’ve discovered most of my current skincare faves browsing the aisles of Parisian drug stores, with Google Translate in hand. It takes a while for these products to arrive in Canada, but eventually some of them do, making it a lot easier to stock up without having to pay for a plane ticket. Embryolisse is one of those brands. A French pharmacy staple, Embryolisse was created by a dermatologist back in 1950, with its first product – Lait-Crème Concentré. Since then, the brand has become a cult-favourite. Lucky for us, Embryolisse is now available in Canada, with a range of skincare products well-suited to sensitive skin. Embryolisse formulas include ingredients of natural origin (shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera, soy) combined with cutting-edge dermatological active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and collagen to offer products that are effective but also suitable for even the most sensitive skin (hello, it me!). The company pays a lot of attention to ingredient dosages, ensuring that each product contains just enough of each active ingredient as to be effective, but not so much that your skin won’t be able to absorb it.

Last week, I attended a fun Embryolisse event, which introduced us to brand’s new arrivals, and treated all attendees to a mini photoshoot with pro photographer Vincent Lions. Makeup artist Angie di Battista prepped my skin with Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré before doing my makeup, and hairstylist Ian Russel added some waves to my hair before I was ready to step in front of the camera. There were lots of great outfit options on offer from Emma Boutique, but I opted to wear my own clothes – a Comme des Garcons Play shirt I was wearing that day, and a Saint Laurent polka dot dress. The photos turned out great, non?

But back to the latest and greatest from Embryolisse. I already use a couple of Embryolisse products from the Artist Secret series – like the Radiant Eyes stick (perfect for tired eyes) and Lashes & Brows Booster (gotta be more diligent about applying this daily but still love it), but this time I was introduced to the brand’s Anti-Aging skincare line. The thing about sensitive skin is that a lot of skincare products with anti-aging ingredients tend to be too harsh, causing breakouts and irritation. What’s different about Embryolisse Anti-Aging line is that it doesn’t promise immediate results, but a slow build to better, more youthful skin, with lower chance of causing an adverse reaction. I was especially intrigued by the Gentle Night Peeling cream with caviar lemon extract, which promotes gentle cell renewal every night. My sensitive skin can’t tolerate most chemical peels, so I am really excited to try this one…and a cherry on top – it’s really affordable!

If you’d like to try Embryolisse, you can find their products at Shoppers Drug Mart online and in stores.

What I Wore: Seven Magic Mountains

By now, I am sure you’ve seen dozens of photos from Seven Magic Mountains – the larger than life (temporary) art installation by Ugo Rondinone just outside of Las Vegas – but here I am with more…simply because the colourful rocks truly were incredible to see in person…and I had to show you my new favourite dress. Getting the shot involved waiting around for waves of people to subside, running over to the nearest vacant rock formation as quickly as I could, while my husband snapped away. We probably should’ve arrived at sunrise to avoid the crowds, but who wakes up that early in Vegas?! Not us.

We shot these photos on our way to Palm Springs from Las Vegas, taking the scenic route through the Mojave National Preserve instead of the boring highways, and were rewarded with endless Joshua trees, cool rock formations, and the open road – driving for miles with no other cars in sight. If you ever make the drive, I highly recommend taking this route, it will take longer to get to your destination, but the journey will be seriously worth it.

But back to my dress. Though I said good-bye to my unicorn locks, I’m still dressing like one…especially when in California. Which is why when I saw this tie-dye-inspired watercolour-dreams slip dress, I knew I had to have it. I ordered it from ASOS, and while sadly it was slightly too big, exchanging it wasn’t an option (so expensive!), so I wore it as-is…and though I probably flashed a few Joshua trees while twirling around in the desert, I am kinda digging the loose look of this maxi…and of course, the slightly-faded pastel print. I am sure I’ll wear it a lot this summer, even if the setting won’t be quite as picturesque.

So tell me, have you visited Seven Magic Mountains yet? Planning to? Share in the comments.

What I Wore: Miami Ice

17 February, 2015 Nelia

I don’t know about you, but I am officially sick and tired of winter. This past weekend (Valentine’s Day and Family Day long weekend) was so frigid (felt like -40!!!), that going outside felt like an act of bravery. Le bf and I did manage to go out for dinner on Valentine’s Day, and I did make it to the gym one morning, but the rest of my long weekend was spent on the couch, wrapped in a fluffy blanket, drinking hot tea, and watching movies. Hybernation is the only way to survive, y’all. Which is why we haven’t shot any new outfit posts lately…and also why I am trotting out my last What I Wore post from our long-ago trip to Miami.

I didn’t post it originally because we didn’t take a lot of photos that day, but beggars can’t be choosers, so here it is now…a couple of months later…all sunshine and pretty colours. Makes me want to get away again! Luckily, our next trip is coming soon, but not soon enough!

So tell me, how are you surviving winter? Wherever you are…

What I Wore: Blue Plaid Coat

If you live in Toronto, or anywhere else in the world where winters and cold days in general last forever, you really can’t own too many coats. Outerwear is the one thing that people will see on you day after day, and it helps having more than one to spice things up. Which is why I was overjoyed when The Bay generously sent me this blue plaid stunner from Planet to wear and to love this fall.

Obviously, I wore it to dinner the same night, feeling like this new coat injected new life into my simple outfit. And while it looks like it wouldn’t be warm enough for our blistery days, with a little creative layering (a wool sweater over a shirt dress), it does the job splendidly. I will definitely enjoy throwing this coat on, to change things up from my usual wintery parka and to add some colour to my outfits.

So tell me, how do you handle cold weather? Do you reach for your trusty puffer, or do you like to layer and wear a lightweight coat instead? Share in the comments.
