Styled By Nelia: Dressing for Prom

15 May, 2014 Nelia

Prom season is here, and if you still don’t have your dream dress in the bag, don’t worry – there’s still time! Last week, I stopped by Le Château at Yorkdale Shopping Centre to help Daphne, who will be graduating this year, shop for her upcoming prom. Together, we selected a few looks inspired by three stylish celebs, to help make your search a little easier.

Our first look was inspired by Queen Bey herself – a glam and sexy black gown with embroidered bodice – perfect for a fancy soiree. While many are apprehensive to wear black for special occasions, it’s actually the easiest way to look sophisticated and glamorous. All you need to do to make sure you don’t enter snoozeville is choose a black gown with fun details like embroidery, cut-outs, and other embellishments. And to top it off, you can add colour to your look with jewelry and accessories. For Daphne, I chose a pair of sparkly green earrings for a pop of colour.

If you’re a girly girl like Taylor Swift, a floral frock might be just what you’re looking for. To avoid looking too casual, make sure to add a sparkly or a metallic belt, and stay away from the not-so-dressy fabrics like cotton.

And finally, my favourite look of the three was inspired by Angelina Jolie and Diane Keaton. Both actresses love to wear suits on (and off) the red carpet, and I adore them for it. If you want to stand out from the crowd and have the guts to go against the grain, a well-tailored suit is a great option. To pull off this look, your suit must fit you reaaaally well, so if it needs to be taken to a seamstress, just do it. A few bucks spent on alterations can make a world of difference. As for accessories, the best thing is – a suit is really a blank canvas, so you can go as bold or as minimal as you’d like. Obviously, for prom, I would suggest a few standout accessories, and a fun pair of shoes.

Good luck with your prom dress (or suit) search, and let us know whether you were inspired by the three looks we put together!

Organic Style: Prom at the ROM: Into The Wild

11 April, 2011 Nelia

I already shared my Prom (horror) story with you, and as you might know, because of it, I got to attend Prom at the ROM: Into the Wild  fundraising event last month. As the theme of the evening suggested, attendees had to go wild with their outfits, and oh-so-many of them really did! There were animal ears and tails, feathers, masks, and animal prints galore (oh my!) – all in support of the Young Patrons’ Circle.

Le boyfriend and I had a blast of a time, and I was just a tiniest bit disappointed that no slow songs were played (the DJ told us that he wasn’t allowed)…what’s a Prom without any slow jams? Nevertheless, we still enjoyed the night, met some fun people, and snapped photos of the wildest attendees at every opportunity. I think my second go at Prom was much more successful than the first…and as an extra bonus, le boyfriend and I can now truthfully say that we were each other’s Prom dates. Yeah, yeah…we’re that couple. Don’t judge!

More after the jump!

What I Wore: I’m Like a Bird

28 March, 2011 Nelia

When I saw Flare Magazine’s “Prom Part Deux” contest entry requirements, I knew I had to try my luck. All I needed to do was write about my own Prom, and describe why I might deserve to have another go at it. After finding out that I won 2 tickest to the Prom at the ROM event, as well as $1000 gift certificate from BCBG, I was seriously jumping for joy. But upon further reflection, me #WINNING meant that I truly did have the best worst Prom story ever. And that, my friends, is hella sad.

Not to rehash my way too long Prom fail story, here’s just a quick summary of things that happened on Prom night (and before):

– Lost luggage on my way to Prom (dress, shoes, accessories…everything!)
– Couldn’t find a last-minute dress replacement, so I went with a very simple aka blah choice
– My mom’s hairstylist gave my shoulder-length hair some major whippage, making me look very Marge Simpson (sans le bleu)
– At Prom, my first attempt at dancing resulted in a broken heel
– Best friend loaned me some shoes from her mom’s car – black rubber cloggy type monstrosities
– Oh, and since I’ve spent my senior year studying abroad, I went without a date

So you might see now that I needed another chance at Prom. After much consideration, I went with this BCBG Max Azria Runway number. It was just too perfect for twirling, and I fell in love with the pleated side-skirt-thingamajig.

So, thank you Flare, for giving me a chance to experience Prom again…this time with a great date, a lovely dress, and a pair of heels that didn’t buckle on me. One could even say that I…had…the time of my life! And I owe it all to you.
