What I Wore: All Grown Up

25 February, 2014 Nelia

Whenever someone asks me to describe my style, the word tomboy always comes to mind. I’ve never been a girlie girl, and even though I do love to wear dresses, the way I wear them is never polished and refined, but a little messy and imperfect…and that’s what makes those looks “me”. This time around, however, I found it really hard to look messy in this perfectly ladylike Pink Tartan python print full skirt. The fun colour, paired with the flattering shape is an easy-to-follow recipe for refinement, just like most of Kimberly Newport-Mimran’s pieces. But something about this one in particular called my name. Maybe it’s the age thing…growing up and being drawn to more grown-up pieces, or maybe I just really loved this skirt. Either way, I’ll be wearing this one a lot this spring…topped with my trusty moto jacket. I have to toughen it up somehow!

Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Spring 2014

23 October, 2013 Nelia

pink-tartan-spring-2014-collection-

Be still my beating heart…Kim Newport-Mimran has done it again! After wrapping up my first day at the tents, I must admit that Pink Tartan Spring 2014 show was my personal highlight of day 1 of World MasterCard Fashion Week. I made sure to ditch my seat for the discomfort of the photographers’ pit to get some usable shots for my site, because I just knew it was going to be great…and it was! With all the monochromatic looks, stripes galore, splashes of neon, and that Warhol-esque flower print, there was a lot to love…and there was a lot to covet…

Though it has not veered too far off the tried and true Pink Tartan formula of classic separates, fancy gowns, and ladylike everything else, Spring 2014 collection felt stronger because of its pared down elegance, no frills attached. Every piece sent down the runway breathed chic simplicity; even in neon yellow, or full-on leather…it was still pure Pink Tartan. I loved the mod feel of this Edie Sedgwick-inspired collection, I’ve always been a hoarder of all things black and white and striped, so every print I saw was totally up my alley. Wearable definitely comes to mind when describing the collection, which is probably why I am truly obsessed with half of it…because I can already see these pieces working their way into my life…seamlessly.

Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Fall 2013 Collection

22 March, 2013 Nelia

The  morning of Pink Tartan’s Fall 2013 show, I read the interview Flare’s Emily Ramshaw did with Kimberly Newport about the new collection, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that Pink Tartan’s president and head designer is a fan of American Horror Story. Such a fan in fact, that her entire fall collection was inspired by one Constance Langdon. If you watched the first season of AHS, you already know that Constance (played by the glorious Jessica Lange) was one classy lady. Well, a husband-murdering lady, but classy nonetheless. And Pink Tartan’s fall collection was spot on Constance – elegant, with a vintage flare, and just the right hint of mischief. The collection definitely felt older than spring’s Charlotte Free-inspired butterfly-printed line-up, but it also felt more timeless. Classic (and flattering) silhouettes, and statement outerwear dominated the fall show, and I found myself drooling at the sight of some pieces…like the blue fur coat, which sadly, I won’t be able to afford, but can certainly daydream about.

The wigs seemed to cause a bit of a controversy among the show-goers I spoke to, but as a huge fan of AHS, and Jessica Lange, I loved this particular styling choice, and was delighted at the sight of an army of Jessica Lange lookalikes strutting their stuff. If I squinted hard enough, I could almost imagine that it was the real deal.

All in all, I really enjoyed Pink Tartan’s Fall 2013 collection, but hope that the next show isn’t inspired by the second season of AHS, because asylum chic might be a little too much, even for a die-hard fan like myself.

What do you think about this collection? Are you a fan of AHS? Share in the comments!

Toronto Fashion Week: Canadian Essentials from eLUXE

22 October, 2012 Nelia

toronto-fashion-week-essentials-eluxe

Toronto Fashion Week is here, and our city is buzzing with excitement of SS13 collections, street style photographers on the prowl, and media, bloggers, and industry folks flooding the tents on King Street. And since I wasn’t able to hit the shops last weekend to pick up a few things to wear this week, I checked out eLUXE’s wide assortment of Canadian-designed pieces instead!

From a roomy bag, to a statement blazer, to oh-so-necessary eye cream, it has never been easier to add a few Canadian pieces to your wardrobe (and beauty cabinet too!). And with special MasterCard Stylicity eLUXE deal ($25 credit when you spend $75 or more, $25 off purchase of $75 or more), the timing couldn’t be more perfect. So take advantage while you can!

Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Fall 2012 Collection

19 March, 2012 Nelia

pink-tartan-fall-2012

Peplums, and feathers, and fur sleeves…oh, my! Pink Tartan Fall 2012 was full of fun details, great styling (no surprise, as it’s rumoured to have been styled by Flare’s Liz Cabral herself), and lots (and lots) of wearable pieces. From dramatic makeup (those lips!), to dramatic silhouettes…I was really into it all.

Some of my fave pieces included a wine red blazer with black patent detailing (a must-have for next fall), bold green peplum top and matching pants, as well as that green leather skirt with sheer panels. Simply divine.

And though I didn’t find Pink Tartan’s fall collection to be breathtaking (that honor goes to Lucian Matis), I am certain that its wearability will prove a huge success on the retail side of the equation…and I’ll definitely be spending my hard-earned cash on a couple of pieces myself.

LG Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Spring 2012

22 November, 2011 Nelia

I can’t believe it’s almost December, and I am still posting LGFW reviews! At least, as with other spring previews, it gives you (and me) something to look forward to this winter. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So, on to Pink Tartan Spring 2012. French tunes leading the way, attendees were in for a Riviera-inspired treat. Chic black and white frocks, striped jackets, and cigarette pants were all perfect for trotting the streets of Nice, looking like you belong.

My favorite pieces included anything striped (obviously), shiny red (or blue) pants (so fun!), and dresses that looked office-appropriate, yet dressy enough for a night out on the town (best combo ever).

Overall, Pink Tartan Spring 2012 certainly wasn’t a groundbreaking collection, but I loved it nonetheless. Most pieces had a timeless feel (save for the shiny red pants) that I’ve been needing to infuse into my own wardrobe. In my opinion, the more wearable, modern classics, the better.

What do you think of Pink Tartan’s spring collection? Let me know in the comments.

LG Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Fall 2010

6 April, 2010 Nelia

Kimberley Newport-Mimran’s Pink Tartan Fall/Winter 2010 show opened with an electric violinist, which come to think of it Andy Thê-Anh did much better with Dr. Draw’s energetic show back in 2008. The show itself featured a bevy of skinny models, clad in aviator style hats, and wearing Alexander Wang-esque side braids, with lots of fur detailing. One thing that really confused me about Pink Tartan’s collection is the harness-like furry wings attached to a few of the models. Were those supposed to be some sort of backwarmers? I don’t get it and I don’t love it.

One thing I did love, however, were the furry skirts. I know that it might be a controversial choice, given that most people I spoke to hated those things with a passion. But to me, they worked. Although a woman with curves might have a problem pulling one of those off. In general, I felt like I’ve seen most things shown at Pink Tartan before, and felt that the styling didn’t have to be borrowed from another designer, but as always, the detailing was noteworthy, and the leather dresses/jackets were covetable.
