NYFW Spring 2015: Street Style Hair Trends

18 February, 2015 Nelia

nyfw-spring-2015-street-style-2
As the latest season of NYFW is coming to a close, I want to revisit some photos I took at the tents last September. As I was shooting, I noticed a trend – fun hair colours! From platinum, to grey, to red, to pastel, to rainbow, people were making loud fashion statements with their hair colour.

Perhaps I was biased and only captured what I wanted to see, since at the time I was freshly platinum, but after shooting for a couple of days and spotting dozens of fun hair shades, I knew I wasn’t imagining it. With spring and summer just around the corner, I thought I’d share these photos in case you needed some hair inspo for those warmer days ahead. Enjoy!

You Are Invited: Amex UNSTAGED DVF Fall 2014 Fashion Show x St. Vincent at NYFW!

7 February, 2014 Nelia

amex-unstaged-st-vincent-dvf-nyfw

WHAT: LIVE DVF Fall 2014 Fashion Show and Special Performance by St. Vincent
WHEN: February 9th, 2014 (live stream starts at 4:45PM EST)
WHERE: AmexUnstaged.com and DVF.com

This time last year, I was bundled up in my most stylish winter clothes shooting street style outside New York’s Lincoln Center between fashion shows. Despite snowstorms and freezing temperatures, I was super excited to attend my very first MBFW in New York and to experience the craziness of a major fashion week in person. This season, as I planned my trip to New York, unexpected things came up, making it impossible for me to attend. But you know what? I’m ok with that, thanks to Amex UNSTAGED!

This year, American Express partnered up with fab designer Diane von Furstenberg for a very special UNSTAGED fashion show experience for those of us that can’t attend in person. This Sunday, February 9th (at 4:45PM EST), we all get a front row seat at the DVF fashion show at MBFW in New York by simply tuning into Amex UNSTAGED live stream of the show! How cool is that?!

As part of UNSTAGED, fans will get to access to several pre-show, in-show, and post-show digital features that will transport them to New York, without having to shell out for a plane ticket. The future is now, guys! But that’s not all. While watching, make sure to tweet with hashtag #AmexUNSTAGED to unlock an exclusive digital experience – a special performance by St. Vincent that will take place after the DVF Fall 2014 show in the Cardmember Space at the American Express UNSTAGED Fashion with DVF event. The singer will debut songs from her highly-anticipated new self-titled album, due out on February 25th.

Excited yet? I know I am! Thanks to American Express Canada and their creative entertainment perks for their Cardmembers, even if I can’t be in New York this February, at least I can enjoy this rare glimpse into the crazy/exciting world of New York Fashion Week from the comfort of my couch! Here’s hoping for some backstage drama! I will be live-tweeting (@styleblogca) throughout the show with my blogger bestie @backseatstylers and @AmexCanada, so make sure to follow the hashtag #AmexUNSTAGED this Sunday! See you at the show?

This post was sponsored by Amex Canada. The views and opinions expressed in this blog, however, are purely my own.

Spring 2013 Trends: In Living Colour

7 March, 2013 Nelia

spring-2013-trends-nokia-lumia

Sponsored Post

After being introduced to the new Nokia Lumia 920, and the amazing range of colours these phones come in, I was reminded of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and all the amazing spring trends I spotted outside of the tents. Naturally, this prompted me to jot down my personal spring shopping list to make sure that I’m ready not only for Toronto’s own fashion week, but for the warmer weather ahead. Not surprisingly, my list included a lot of colour. Here are some fun spring 2013 trends that I can’t wait to try this season, and hope you might like as well!

1. Graphic Black and White

Stripes, checks, dots, you name it! Graphic black and white prints are certainly having their moment. And as someone who’s obsessed with stripes in general, this trend feels mighty refreshing to the usual pastels that inevitably come each spring.

2. White Pumps

For the last few months, it seems that every stylish person out there has been obsessed with white pumps. Celebs like Kerry Washington, Carrie Bradshaw…errr…SJP and Rihanna, among others, have all been spotted wearing this trend on red carpets everywhere, and why not? Classic white pumps are just as easy to pull off as the boring black ones, but feel a lot more current.

3. Mirrored Shades

Another trend I spotted during NYFW was mirrored shades. In vibrant shades of blue, orange, yellow, pink, [insert colour here], mirrored shades come in every colour imaginable, and look cool and refreshing. I love classic Wayfarers as much as any other person out there, but this spring I will be mixing it up with a fun pair of blue mirrored shades.

4. Colourful Bags

While I may not be able to afford a Chanel bag in every colour of the rainbow, this spring I am planning to pick up a colourful clutch or two to inject some much-needed excitement into my wardrobe. If your budget allows it, Chanel spring 2013 bags are exceptional! Lego-inspired whimsical clutches and colour-blocked quilted flap bags; this is what dreams are made of!

5. Statement Outerwear

Whether you are a leather-jacket girl or a peacoat lady, this spring is all about statement outerwear! Red leather jackets, fuchsia muppet-hair coats, metallic blue trench coats – pick a fun topper, and wear it with confidence.

Whether you are into graphic prints or love a little pop of colour in your accessories, spring trends are only a guideline, not a rule. Start small, with a fun yellow phone or perhaps with a funky blue clutch, and make each look your own.

What are your favourite spring 2013 trends? Share in the comments.

Finally, a phone as colourful as you are. The new Nokia Lumia 920, available exclusively at Rogers. Express yourself with your choice of four vibrant colours – yellow, red, black and white. Visit rogers.com/nokiacolours for details.

NYFW Fall 2013: Mathieu Mirano, DL1961, and Reem Acra…oh my!

4 March, 2013 Nelia

mathieu-mirano-fall-2013-nyfw

On my third day of NYFW, I began my day bright and early with a Mathieu Mirano Fall 2013 presentation. And though I have to admit, I’m not a morning person (<<understatement), I was really happy I made the effort to see this collection. Classic with a modern twist, Mirano’s third collection had me making wishlists as I was happily snapping away. Fox-fur coat with a sliver of unexpected mesh, luxe-looking sparkly pencil skirt, geometric patterns galore – it all felt fresh and exciting, without being forced. This young designer is definitely one to watch.

My second stop of the day was DL1961’s Fall 2013 show, where the good old jeans were transformed into drool-worthy objects of desire. Granted, my favourite pairs weren’t your regular skinnies, but still. Who knew that denim could be so haute? From quilted details and leather trims, to fun pops of colour, I loved it all. And knowing how comfy those babies are, I had no doubt that I’d be investing in another pair sooner rather than later.

I ended my day with one of my most highly-anticipated shows of the week – Reem Acra Fall 2013. I was really looking forward to seeing the Reem Acra extravagance in person, and I wasn’t disappointed. The sexy collection was inspired by Acra’s recent trip to Japan, and featured a classic palette of black, white, and red. And while the chic workwear pieces were both glam and versatile, the ones that got my heart thumping were Acra’s signature evening gowns – some delicately beaded and flowing, other sculpted and embellished. Katherine Heigl, who took in the show from the front row, was seen clapping cheerfully as the designer took her bow.

NYFW Fall 2013: Naeem Khan

26 February, 2013 Nelia

Naeem-Khan-fall-winter-2013-nyfw

One of the highlights of my whirlwind trip to New York this February was attending Naeem Khan’s Fall 2013 runway presentation. With a star-studded front row that included Matt Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso, Brooke Shields, Taraji Henson, and Vanessa Hudgens, this show was one of my favourites, and not because of the celeb factor – the clothes were breathtaking!

Gown after opulent gown, you could feel the excitement in the room. From long-sleeved silver frocks, to blue and crimson velvet, to sparkly golden dresses, I loved it all, and wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of the more formal beaded numbers on red carpets soon (Michelle Obama herself wore one of his designs to the Academy’s Governors’ Dinner, while Clooney’s giflfriend wore a dress from this collection to The Oscars!). And why not? Naeem Khan’s aesthetic is sexy and glam, without feeling stale.

I am very happy that I got to see this collection in person, because no amount of pictures can beat seeing it in real life. So believe me when I say…they looked SO much better in person. If you do want to see the entire collection, please click HERE.

What do you think of Naeem Khan’s Fall 2013 collection? Let me know in the comments.

What I Wore: New York, New York

22 February, 2013 Nelia

nyfw-fall-2013-day-30

Yup, Paris Fashion Week starts next week, and I am still catching up on my New York posts. Sorry? But not really, because life has never been more hectic than it is right now. So I apologize in advance if the next few weeks are lighter on content than usual…but life trumps blog, you know?

This was one of the only outfits that I got to photograph in New York. Not because I didn’t wear clothes (I did, I swear!), but because my photographer had to go back to Toronto, and I’m not very good at selfies. So this one will have to do. The rest of the fashion show coverage posts are coming next week. Have a great weekend!

NYFW Fall 2013: Street Style Looks Part 2

19 February, 2013 Nelia

nyfw-fall-2013-day-2-street-style-5

Watching New York Fashion Week attendees battle the elements this February was interesting…to say the least. Piles of snow, layers of icy slush, and frigid winds didn’t stop the stylish crowds from bringing it. And while I kinda gave up on fashun after a particularly cold day at the tents, these awesome street stylers certainly didn’t. From stunning outerwear, to  creative layering, to eye-popping accessories, great looks were on display all over the place, and I was right there to capture it all for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy, and let me know which outfits you like best!

Also, if you still haven’t, check out NYFW Street Style Looks Part One!

NYFW Fall 2013: LACOSTE, Mara Hoffman, and Rafael Cennamo

13 February, 2013 Nelia

nyfw-fall-2013-day-1-rafael-cennamo

Thanks to Nemo, my Friday flight to New York got cancelled and moved to Saturday instead, which meant that sadly, I had to miss a few fun NYFW appointments, like the LACOSTE Fall 2013 show. As much as I was looking forward to attending it, there was nothing I could do, so I caught up on it online instead. With awesome color-blocked, draped and zippered dresses, and bold shapes all around, this collection was definitely up my alley, and I was sad that I didn’t get to see it in person. Wah-wah…maybe next time.

lacoste-invitation-nyfw

As soon as le bf and I got off our Porter flight, we dashed to Manhattan in order to make it to the Mara Hoffman show at Lincoln Center. With no time to spare, I sprinted through the slushy snow, rows of street style photographers waiting on the sidelines, and grabbed a seat just as the show was about to start.

nyfw-fall-2013-day-1-mara-hoffman

As a huge fan of Mara’s gorgeous prints and boho aesthetic, this was one of my most highly-anticipated tickets all week, and I have to say that my excitement was totally justified. From the beautiful flowy dresses (maxis were my fave), to printed cardigans, jackets, and knits, I’ve lost count of the many things I had on my must-have wishlist. This collection was fun, youthful, and definitely covet-worthy. Not sure if I would wear most of those pieces in the fall in Toronto, but I would totally live in them all summer long.

nyfw-fall-2013-day-1-mara-hoffman-3

After Mara’s show, I made my way to the “21 Shades of Gold” Rafael Cennamo presentation, where I was blinded by the fabulous line-up of models gilded in sparkly golden evening gowns. “Inspired by the passage of time with the ornate and golden aura of The Hall of Mirrors, Rafael gets inspiration for his Fall 2013 Couture Collection by bringing his twist upon classic couture.”

Rafael Cennamo’s Fall 2013 collection definitely didn’t scrimp on gold embellishments. There were lace gowns, draped taffeta, jacquard, velvet, duchess silk – all in gold! Beaded, draped, asymmetric, embroidered…you name it. The attention to detail was impeccable, and I wished that 1. I could afford one of those dresses, and 2. I had somewhere to wear something so exquisite!

After attending both shows, I ran outside to shoot some street style, before meeting up with le bf for a delish dinner and some shopping. Airport to fashion week mission accomplished!

Stay tuned for more coverage of other great NYFW Fall 2013 shows!

NYFW Fall 2013: Street Style Looks Part 1

11 February, 2013 Nelia

nyfw-fall-2013-day-24

NYFW is passing by in a whirlwind of appointments, shows, and snowy sidewalks. But apart from seeing some beautiful designs up close and personal, my favourite part of this experience has definitely been street style. Watching people come out of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents, in sometimes immaculately styled, sometimes batshit crazy outfits is never boring, and has kept me entertained all week long. So here are a few of my favourite street style looks that I spotted in New York this season. From the Smurfette-worthy clothes and hair, to fun pops of neon, these street stylers might just inspire you to try something new this winter.

Are you liking any of these outfits? Share your favourites in the comments.
