Style Fille: Elizabeth Olsen in KENZO x H&M

27 October, 2016 Nelia

Elizabeth Olsen
First things first…H&M CANADA ONLINE SHOPPING HAS FINALLY LAUNCHED!!! And if you sign up to be on the brand’s mailing list, you will receive 20% off your purchase and free shipping until Oct 30th! What this means for those who are looking to shop the KENZO x H&M collection? Well, you just got an alternative to lining up in the middle of the night. But don’t rely on online shopping as your only way of getting those coveted pieces – sites are known to crash due to high demand.

Now that I got that off my chest (seriously, I’ve been waiting for H&M online shop for AGES!), we can look at Elizabeth Olsen’s amazing KENZO x H&M getup. These two pajama-inspired pieces are at the top of my list, and I love how she styled them with a pair of velvet heels. So perfect. For those who have yet to embrace pajamas as daywear, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. It’s comfy and chic, and I am all about it. Obviously, Lupita Nyong’o also looks super gorgeous in that amazing printed dress, but in this instance, my eyes are permanently glued to Elizabeth Olsen’s outfit.

Are you excited about H&M Canada online shopping being available??? Do you love the pajama trend? Share in the comments!

Met Gala 2016: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

3 May, 2016 Nelia

Met-Gala-2016-solange-knowles
The first Monday in May is here and so is the annual Met Gala aka Fashion Oscars. After poring over hundreds of celeb pics, I have to say that it was probably one of my fave red carpets in a while…which is why I had such a tough time choosing my faves. This year, there were so many interesting dresses, I couldn’t narrow down my choices to the usual “best” and “worst”, and so, I am just going to post all of the looks that I’d found either exciting, or super boring/terrible, so that you can judge for yourself.

Perhaps the red carpet was extra exciting thanks to this year’s theme – Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Anna Wintour arrived wearing one of my fave looks from CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2016 collection, and knowing first-hand how important both technology and innovation are in creating a lot of the CHANEL looks, I loved her choice that much more. Other stand-outs included Solange in an origami-like David Laport frock of my dreams, Zoe Saldana sporting a gown with an exaggerated peacock-like train, Nicole Kidman in an ethereal caped creation, Kristen Stewart in yet another stunning CHANEL dress, Claire Danes in a glow-in-the-dark ball gown, and Lena Dunham, Jenna Lyons, and Jennifer Konner in custom-made J.Crew tuxes – so fresh and so cool, though perhaps not exactly adhering to the theme of the night.

I have to say that I was very disappointed to see Michelle Williams in a completely forgettable and way-too-casual dress, which was made even worse by her terrible new bangs and drab makeup – a rare misstep for this usually stylish actress. Other misses included Grimes in an ill-fitting dress and dishevelled hair, SJP in a puzzling get-up, Kerry Washington looking like she was going to a Halloween party dressed as a witch, and a whole bunch of people like Elle Fanning, Katie Holmes, Amber Heard, Emily Ratajkowski, Maria Sharapova, among others, who wore completely forgettable dresses, definitely not worthy of the Met Gala. Last, but not least, Taylor Swift, who was the co-chair of this year’s event, totally missed the mark in a cocktail dress that could have come from Banana Republic (no offence to Banana Republic, but it’s usually not Met Gala appropriate).

And there you have it, my faves and not-so-faves from this year’s Met Gala. Which looks did you like? Share your best and worst in the comments.

What They Wore: Cannes 2015 Best Dressed

20 May, 2015 Nelia

Cannes-2015-Poppy-Delevingne
I love Cannes fashion. Most of the time celebs aren’t afraid to make style statements on the croisette, and we get to feast our eyes on over-the-top gowns, as well as the more subdued, real-life-appropriate day outfits. It’s a win-win!

This year, I found the fashions particularly inspiring, with some of the world’s most stylish leading ladies all over the red carpet, I had a tough time picking my faves. Diane Kruger, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sienna Miller, Lupita Nyong’o, and many others brought their A-game to Cannes, and it was glorious.

I know that the festival isn’t over just yet, and I’ll update this post as more photographs become available, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy Poppy Delevingne in her exquisite CHANEL gown, the always regal Cate Blanchett in an otherworldly Giles creation, Diane Kruger in the most adorable Dolce and Gabbana dress, and many more.

Share your faves in comments and stay tuned for more beautiful looks from Cannes 2015!

Oscars 2015: Best Dressed

23 February, 2015 Nelia

Marion-Cotillard-Dress-Oscars-2015
If you tuned in to my #YorkdaleOscars live-tweet session, you already know that I thought that this year’s Oscars were a bit of a snoozefest. NPH’s jokes fell flat, the red carpet wasn’t very exciting, and the show felt like it lasted FOREVER. But despite all that, once I started going through my best-dressed picks, I came up with quite a few faves. A little disclaimer…not all of these looks are 100% amazing in my books…but they were the best of the bunch – the most exciting, most beautiful, most elaborate. There were also some bad ones…like Anna Kendrick’s bridesmaid dress, or Karolina Kurkova’s rumpled duvet gown…but we won’t go there. Instead, let’s see who brought their A (and A-) game to Dolby this year.

Marion Cotillard’s Christian Dior Couture was one of the faves…not only because of the unusual construction and exquisite detailing, but because it was Marion who was wearing it. On anyone else this would not have been a win. But she really sold it.

Laura-Dern-Oscar-2015-Best-Dressed
As I mentioned on Twitter, Laura Dern isn’t usually a fashion girl, but she BROUGHT IT this year in a silver Alberta Ferretti gown. Bow down!

Julianne-Moore-oscar-2015
Julianne Moore was the clear winner this year…not only taking home the coveted Best Actress award, but rocking a custom CHANEL Couture gown like it was made for her…because it was.

Lupita Nyong’o Covers American VOGUE

19 June, 2014 Nelia

lupita-nyongo-vogue-cover

Finally an American VOGUE cover I can get excited about! After the disaster that was Kimye cover, I was so pleased to see the gorgeous Lupita Nyong’o on the cover of the July 2014 issue. And while the styling of the cover itself is pretty blah, her beauty radiates and improves it tenfold. Luckily, the rest of the photos are much better. Set in Marrakech, this shoot really inspired me to look into packing my bags and jetting off to Morocco for a week – to explore the bazaars, chill at the hammam, and just lounge around looking drop-dead-gorgeous and Lupita-like. I mean…that photo of her on the couch…she looks incredible!

So there you have it…first VOGUE puts a reality TV famewhore on the cover, and then follows up with an uber-talented loveliest and smartest actress around…Colour me confused. But since an American VOGUE cover is till a huge deal (sorry, Victoria Beckham), this is yet another win for Lupita, who’s already had a pretty kick-ass year so far. You go, girl!

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2014

6 May, 2014 Nelia

liu-wen-zac-posen-met-gala-dress-2014

What’s more important – adhering to a dress code or bringing something fresh to the red carpet? Last night at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, some celebs decided to pay homage to the celebrated American designer Charles James, while others chose to wear something exciting instead. No shade to James, but after seeing one too many taffeta-clad celebs, I cheered when I glimpsed Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada amazingness. Sure, it wasn’t exactly inspired by Charles James, but it was fun to look at, and if anyone could pull off the bejeweled net dress with feathers, it’s Lupita. Same goes for Kirsten Dunst’s Rodarte Star Wars gown – amazing, and probably not the most appropriate for that particular theme, but still…so cool! Another look I couldn’t resist last night was Chloe Sevigny in Kenzo, which was probably much too modern for last night’s theme, but I loved it all the same.

But it wasn’t solely the rebels that caught my eye, I absolutely adored Liu Wen in a Zac Posen stunner (which I just got to see at Holts last week!), Emmy Rossum in a floral Carolina Herrera gown, Giovanna Battaglia in an 0ff-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana, and Hailee Steinfeld in a very theme-(and age)-appropriate black, white, and pink Prabal Gurung gown.

Mostly though, I was underwhelmed with last night’s red carpet looks. My favourite Style Fille Diane Kruger looked washed out in pale blue (though Joshua more than made up for it!), SJP disappointed in a messy Oscar de la Renta, Johnny Depp came dressed as Colonel Sanders, Kate Upton, who isn’t exactly a high-fashion darling, looked frumpy in a Dolce & Gabbana gown, and the rest of the lot just looked…been-there-wore-that.

What do you think of last night’s Met Gala red carpet? Which celebs got it right in your opinion? Share in the comments!

Lupita Nyong’o is Most Beautiful!

24 April, 2014 Nelia

lupita-nyongo-people-magazine-most-beautiful-woman

Lupita Nyong’o has had quite a year so far! She bagged an Oscar, landed a Lancôme campaign, and now, she gets to reign as People Magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman. What an incredible run for this inspiring woman. What I find most compelling about Lupita is how truly grateful she seems about every single bit of recognition. I love that she chooses to project a very positive and encouraging message every time she speaks. And I love how smart this woman is. Of course, she’s gorgeous and stylish to boot, but it’s her inner beauty that captured the adoration of both Hollywood and the world. Here’s hoping that she gets some great roles worthy of her talent soon. Come on, Hollywood!

Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists 2014!

14 March, 2014 Nelia

Lupita-Nyongo-Micaela-Erlanger-Michelle-Dockery-Stylist-Hollywood-Reporter

It’s that time of the year again! As the dust of the latest award show season settles, The Hollywood Reporter has once again compiled a list of Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists. If you ask me, this year, there was only one – Lupita Nyongo’s stylist Micaela Erlanger (third on HR’s list) killed it every single time, elevating her newcomer client’s profile and turning her into a style star. While Lupita Nyongo’s acting chops are obviously Oscar-worthy, it’s her impeccable style (as well as her stylist’s ability to score some major MAJOR brand names) is what a lot of people will remember about Lupita’s breakout year. There was that striking Ralph Lauren red cape, and the custom-made princess-perfect Prada at the Oscars, but in between, there was also a slew of memorable, stylish, bold, and interesting choices that both Nyong’o and Erlanger should feel really proud about. Those two are clearly at the top of their game, and are definitely the ones to watch!

Apart from Lupita and Micaela, The Hollywood Reporter profiled Kristen Stewart’s stylist Tara Swennen, the Fanning sisters’ stylist Samantha McMillen, Cate “the Great” Blanchett’s stylist Elizabeth Stewart, among others. As always, this is a fascinating read for those interested in the crazy game that is celebrity fashion. If you’re curious whether your favourite actress (or actor) dresses her/himself, then head on over to The Hollywood Reporter’s site for the full list.

Oscars 2014: The Best, The Worst, and The Meh

2 March, 2014 Nelia

The Best

So it’s only 7pm on Oscars night, and it might be a bit presumptuous of me, but I am declaring the radiant Lupita Nyong’o my best-dressed of the evening in her stunning custom-made blue Prada gown and Fred Leighton jewels. Watching her on the red carpet made me fall in love with her all over again. It was so refreshing to see someone so well-adjusted, eloquent, humble, funny, and gorgeous on the red carpet. I could watch her for HOURS.

Cate-Blanchett-2014-Oscars-armani-prive-chopard

Cate Blanchett in a stunning beaded Armani Prive gown looked ethereal and every bit like the winner that she is. She always carries herself with so much confidence and class. And of course, she truly is one of the most stylish women out there, so even though I was a bit sad not to see her in something more adventurous, I think this gown was still a perfect choice for a Best Actress nominee (and winner?).

Naomi-Watts-2014-Oscars-Calvin-Klein-Bulgari

As much as I usually hate the safe black or white gowns on the red carpet, the stunning Bulgari necklace over this beaded Calvin Klein gown on Naomi Watts really elevated this look, and made me take notice. This is obviously nowhere near the amazingness that is Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada gown, but it definitely is one of my fave looks of the night.

Charlize-Theron-2014-Oscars

Same goes for Charlize Theron in a stunning black gown. Only Charlize can make a black exciting and interesting on the red carpet. That deep plunge, perfect necklace to accentuate it, and of course that exquisite face – just perfect. I still can’t believe that THIS woman is dating Sean Penn. WHY?!

Kate-Hudson-2014-Oscars-Versace

I was on the fence whether to add Kate Hudson in this Versace gown to my Best Dressed list, because there may be something off about that shiny fabric, but at the end of the day, that center knot, that cape, and that plunging neckline all sell it for me. She looks stunning and I love it.

Style Fille: Lupita Nyong’o on Dazed and Confused

17 January, 2014 Nelia

lupita-nyongo-dazed-cover

Guys, is this not the most stunning magazine cover you’ve seen in a while?! Because I am in awe – perfect makeup, fun clothes, gorgeous cover girl. I also feel ready to make a grand proclamation – Lupita Nyong’o is my new style crush. Move over, Diane Kruger (I still love you though)! I realize that Lupita was styled by a team of stylists for this photo, and she most likely has a stylist for all those major outings too, but somehow, she’s able to say “yes” and perhaps more importantly “no” to all the right pieces, which results in her looking fantastic on the red carpet 99.9% of the time, which means that our girl Lupita’s got some major style chops of her own. I have yet to see her look anything but chic and poised, and every outing, every photo make me want more.

What do you think about Lupita Nyong’o’s style? Are you as into her as I am? Share in the comments!
