Oscars 2016: Best Dressed

28 February, 2016 Nelia

The-Oscars-2016-Best-Dressed-Naomi-Watts
It wasn’t the super exciting red carpet that I was hoping for, but I’ll take what I can get. For one, you can always count on Naomi Watts to wear something beautiful but not overwrought to the Oscars. I loved her colourful fishscale-like gown by Armani Prive. The necklace was a nice touch, I just wish she went with a choker instead. Otherwise, she looked perfect.

The-Oscars-2016-Best-Dressed-Amy-Poehler
I was also pleasantly surprised to see Amy Poehler slay it on the red carpet tonight. Amy’s embroidered Andrew Gn gown is fun, flattering, and definitely not boring. She looked amazing, and you can tell that she was feeling good too.

Golden Globes 2016: Best Dressed

10 January, 2016 Nelia

Golden-Globes-2016-Olivia-WIlde-Michael-Kors
I usually love to watch the Golden Globes live – from the red carpet arrivals to the show itself – I find it more entertaining than almost any other award show. But this weekend, I simply forgot all about it! So this Best Dressed list was based on photos and photos alone. To tell you the truth, it was a bit challenging selecting 10 favourite looks, as a lot of celebrities and their stylists opted for either been-there-seen-that, or snoozeville looks. With that said, here are my faves.

Olivia Wilde is not my usual style favourite. Her style is uneven at best, but this time, in this oxblood Michael Kors Collection gown, she looks ravishing (if we overlook her demon-like eye makeup). The dress fits her like a glove, the colour suits her skin tone, and while I think that necklace is completely unnecessary, she still looks mighty good. Bonus points for keeping it real and rocking a pair of great custom-made ALDO heels (#WearCanada FTW!).

Golden-Globes-2016-Cate-Blanchett-Givenchy
It’s no secret that Cate Blanchett is a superior human being, and as such, she would probably make this list no matter what she decides to put on, but it helps when she shows up in a visually-arresting Givenchy gown. I wish some of those strings/dress hairs weren’t so stringy, but beggars can’t be choosers. Other than a stray string or two, Cate The Great looks impeccable, no surprise here.

Golden-Globes-2016-Kate-Bosworth-Dolce-and-Gabbana
I’m not sure why Kate Bosworth was at the Globes tonight, but the fact is, the woman’s got style. This sequinned Dolce & Gabbana gown looks great on her, the print is interesting, and I love that she chose minimal accessories, letting the dress shine.

Golden-Globes-2016-Alicia-Vikander-Louis-Vuitton
Alicia Vikander is quickly becoming my new favourite. Even the fact that she’s dating my boyfriend Michael Fassbender can’t stop me from liking her. She’s marvellous in The Danish Girl, and has been killing it at every event she attends. I am not madly in love with this Louis Vuitton gown, but she makes it work. I love the stripes, the criss-cross back, and the ruffles around the neckline; it’s both chic and simple, and in my opinion, it’s certainly one of the best looks of the night.

Halloween 2010: Last-Minute Costumes

26 October, 2010 Nelia

Every year, I plan on dressing up for Halloween, and every year I inevitably wait until the week before the party to start putting my costume together. Most times, everything I need…well, almost everything I need, is right inside my closet. This year, I came up with these 5 easy costumes that do not involve much polyester, sluttiness, or money-spending. Shop your own closet for supplies this year, and I bet you, you’ll be surprised at how many costume ideas you’ll be able to come up with!

1. Lady Gaga in Telephone

People have been going gaga for Gaga’s eclectic and sometimes outright batshit crazy stage outfits, which makes them perfect for recreating come Halloween. One of the easiest and cheapest options I could come up with (short of taping a bunch of bottles to a nude dress to make a “bubble bottle dress”) was the “Caution Tape Outfit” from her video Telephone. All you need is some caution tape, safety pins or needles/thread, or possibly scotch tape, and the craziest shoes you can find in your closet.

All I did was wrap the caution tape all over my top/liquid leggings combo, safety pinned it in place (didn’t even have to cut anything), and I was done. If you’re actually serious about recreating the look, you could wrap the tape around your naked/near-naked body, or actually tape that crap to your clothes. Since, I’m neither dedicated nor patient, I wrapped it haphazardly, but perhaps if I actually end up choosing this look, I’ll also attach some tape to the 3D glasses I’m wearing. Cost me all of $2.50 for the tape…everything else was right inside my closet. Done. This look would also work with meat…but it might get smelly by the end of the night.

If you wrap yourself with toilet paper instead, you could look like a pretty hot mummy. Just sayin’.

2. Cousin Itt – The Addams Family

Ever since my mom made fun of my hat/hair/scarf/glasses combo, I’ve been thinking about incorporating said items into a costume, and here’s the final result. To pull off this look you will either need a wig, or if you have long hair, you’ll simply need to flip it in front of your face, put some glasses over it, put on a hat, wear a long-ass dress and something furry/hairy on top. Done. Cost? ZERO dollars…and possibly some bruises and broken bones due to poor visibility. Small price to pay for such an awesome costume! No one will ever accuse you of trying to look slutty this Hallows’ Eve!

3. Wenda – Where’s Waldo?

I am a huge stripes fiend, so this costume is actually came quite naturally. All you need is a red/white striped shirt, a red or white hat with a pom-pom, a blue or denim skirt, some rad (or red) frames, and some red/white striped tights. It also helps to carry a camera, and keep asking people “Where’s Waldo???”. Done! And it cost…all of NOTHING.

I do think that Odlaw’s costume is much more fun that Wenda’s…but finding a yellow/black striped shirt proved a difficult task. If you’re serious about your commitment to portray this baddie, get some yellow duct tape, stick stripes all over a black sweater, put on some black pants and a yellow/black striped hat, round-rim glasses, grow/buy a mustache and you’re done!

4. Dorothy – The Wizard of Oz

This one was a result of my affinity to my Rodarte for Target baby-blue dress. It’s been hanging lifelessly in my closet for over a year now, and I have finally found some use for it! This dress could also be worn as part of Alice in Wonderland costume, but it would probably work best on a blonde.

Back to Dorothy: all you need are some ruby slippers (red heels in this case), a blue dress, pigtails, basket, and someone to play the role of Toto. If I go with this costume, Pepper is getting a dog makeover…or not. Once again, it cost me nothing…

5. Terry Richardson

If you truly want a TERRYfying costume…then look no further than photographer/alleged model abuser Terry Richardson. All you need is a standard hipster uniform of plaid shirt, skinny jeans, Converse sneaks, some Terry-esque shades and a handlebar moustache. Obviously, I wasn’t particularly committed to this look…the glasses are all wrong, and the moustache is nowhere to be seen…but if I actually decided to go as him, all I would need are those two props to complete the look. Extra points for carrying a banana, a camera, and making strangers pose provocatively for ya.

What are you wearing for Halloween this year? I’d love to know!

Friday Faux Pas: Lady Gaga

11 June, 2010 Nelia

In life, there are a handful of moments that you’ll remember forever: first kiss, first love, high-school graduation, marriage, etc. And when those moments come, I am pretty sure it’s safe to say that being overshadowed by your big sister isn’t something one would appreciate. Gaga, always an artiste and a performer, showed up wearing this to her little sister’s high-school graduation. On a day that was supposed to be not-all-about-Gaga, Gaga made sure that all eyes were on her.

Though the veil seems to be an attempt at hiding her face from onlookers, don’t you think wearing regular makeup and clothes would’ve concealed her among the many attendees much more effectively? Of course it would have, but in that case no-one would’ve paid attention to her.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think Gaga is a talented writer and performer, but some moments in life should not be turned into publicity stunts, especially other people’s important moments. Do you think wearing that outfit was a faux pas, or was Gaga just being Gaga? Let me know in the comments or take the poll below!

Lady Gaga For MAC

3 November, 2009 Nelia

Gaga

It was announced yesterday that Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper are the newest faces of MAC’s Viva Glam campaign. The “From Our Lips” campaign will launch on February 25, 2010 featuring the MAC Viva Glam Gaga Lipstick and Viva Glam Cyndi Lipstick, $14 each, will be available in North America on March 18 and globally throughout the month with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to the MAC AIDS Fund, according to WWD. Lady Gaga seems like the right choice for the campaign, since previous ads featured heavily made up singers/celebrities. I think it’s right up her alley. Very curious to see the palettes!
