What They Wore: Boobyball Toronto 2017

18 October, 2017 Nelia

Boobyball has become one of my personal fave parties of the year; a party that puts fun in fundraiser (raising money for Rethink Breast Cancer), can pack a huge club to the brim, while still somehow making the entire affair feel intimate. This year, the theme was Get Physical, and the organizers had really outdone themselves, transforming REBEL into the 80’s/90’s wonderland, complete with gigantic Rubik’s Cubes, tables wallpapered in old teen mags, photobooths aplenty, old-school arcade games, and even an all-pink faux gym/locker room. There was so much fun to be had, and just as much food to go around with catering by the (amazing) Food Dudes and Nando’s, as well as sweet treats from Krispy Kreme and Sweet Jesus, and an open bar stocked with delicious drinks and Flow water. I may or may not have eaten way too many donuts, but probably worked them off on the dancefloor because the DJ was on fire that night (or is it lit?).

The best part of this year’s Boobyball, however, was people-watching. I loved how committed some of the attendees were to the theme. Neon windbreakers, scrunchies, leotards, legwarmers, mullets…you name it, we saw it! It made me kinda-sorta regret not dressing more theme-appropriate, though I do love the blinding sequin dress that I wore that night.

If you live in Vancouver, Ottawa, or Halifax, there’s still time to get your tickets to the Boobyball party in your city. Just a word of advice – more is more when it comes to dressing for Boobyball – bring your 80’s/90’s A-game!

Have you ever been to Boobyball? Share your fave moments in the comments.

What They Wore: Grey Goose Sunset Soiree Picnic

1 August, 2017 Nelia

I love picnics! I would picnic all the time in the summer, but I am way too lazy to put together a basket of provisions, blankets, utensils, drinks, and a million other things you need for an outdoorsy meal. Well, earlier this summer Grey Goose made my most exquisite picnic dreams come true and more!

The brand’s annual summer party was held at a Bridle Path mansion, its backyard set up with chic blue blankets and picnic baskets stuffed with a delicious meal prepared by Chef Justin Kent, along with an iced bucket of Grey Goose Rouge au Vin cocktail at the ready. With three lovely blanketmates, I enjoyed every moment of our picnic, sipping those refreshing cocktails, and devouring the incredible Poulet au Moutard, and other French-inspired nibbles.

After dinner, the guests spread around the grounds to enjoy the rest of the fun activations like a game of petanque, live music, a dove/goose balloon release, and Grey Goose Esspresso Martinis. There was even an artist on hand to sketch everyone’s stylish outfits! As afternoon stretched into late evening, the backyard was still abuzz with excitement – people dancing, mingling, and enjoying the free-flowing Grey Goose cocktails. And if that’s not a sign of a great summer party, then I don’t know what is.

If you’re planning on hosting your own al fresco soiree this summer, I highly recommend the Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz cocktail collection – these delicious concoctions will impress even the pickiest guest, and require only a few ingredients to whip up. I am also including Chef Kent’s recipe for Poulet au Moutard, because it was just too good not to recreate.

Happy picnicking!

Highlights from the Best Buy Life & Wearable Tech Expo and Fashion Show

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd annual Best Buy Life & Wearable Tech Expo and Fashion Show held at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto. Alongside my blogger buds Casie Stewart, Gracie Carroll, and Jay Strut, I checked out the latest in wearable technology, and chatted with tech expert Tom Emrich and stylist Afiya Francisco about all things style and tech.

With the abundance of new products on the market, it can feel both intimidating and exhausting trying to figure out which products are worth trying, so I asked Tom to share his Top 5 wearable tech products and why he’s excited about them. Thinking that I was already on top of all the latest releases, I quickly realized that I was wrong, because I’ve never even heard of the first must-have on Tom’s list – the kate spade new york wearable tech. Soon to be released are the most adorable fitness trackers you’ve ever laid your eyes on. You actually won’t believe that these accessories aren’t just meant to look good. Other items that made Tom’s list are the upcoming Fossil smartwatches (style and substance), Muse Brain-Sensing Headband (to remind you to take some “me” time), Merge VR Goggles (because VR is the future of gaming and possibly many other forms of entertainment), and iON SnapCam (for documenting life’s moments without interruptions).

Another thing to keep in mind when considering wearable tech products is definitely the style element. Afiya’s rule of thumb is to make sure that the product must suit your personal style, otherwise you probably won’t get much use out of it. This rang especially true for me, as seeing this gorgeous Fitbit Alta Metal Band made me choose this specific Fitbit model over other fitness trackers on the market.

After the interviews, my friends and I sat down for the fashion show, seeing just how wearable so many of the tech accessories are today. Though I won’t be strolling the streets with VR goggles on my head any time soon, I love the elegance and simplicity of the many smartwatches and fitness bands available at Best Buy right now…and I’m certainly excited for what’s to come in the near future.

So tell me, do you own any wearable technology products? Why or why not? Share in the comments.

What They Wore: Operanation 2014

22 October, 2014 Nelia

COC Operanation October 16th 2014- Tara Noelle-34

I’ll be honest with you, I am not a fan of galas. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to get dressed up once in a while, but when I have to go to a big gala event, where how you dress actually matters, I get anxious. Plus, I like to be in bed by 11pm (don’t judge!), and most galas just get going around that time. This is precisely why I’ve never gone to Operanation until this year. But after finding out that Yelle was going to perform, I pulled up my big girl pants and decided to go. And boy, was I a fool to have avoided it all these years!

First of all, Operanation was an amazing place to people-watch and witness some great fashion go down. I won’t go so far as to call it the Met Gala of Toronto fashion, but it’s pretty damn close. Most people stuck to the theme of the night, and lit up the room in neon gowns and accessories, sparkly beading, and pops of colour.

And then there was Yelle…Their performance was everything I hoped it would be and more – energetic, engaging, and SO MUCH FUN! I danced, tried to sing along (my French is very limited), and just watched Julie Budet (Lady Mary lookalike) do her thang. Oh, and members of the COC’s Ensemble Circle joined her for a few songs too. Best ever!

On top of the cool performance, and great people-watching, there were also limited-edition designer slap bracelets – coolest raffle entries possibly ever. One lucky girl walked away with a $10,000 shopping spree from The Room (!!!), while a few others snagged COC-sponsored prizes. There was also a churro bar, a photobooth, half-naked Calvin Klein models, hourly drag queen flash mob…in the immortal words of SNL’s Stefon Zelesky – Toronto’s hottest party of the year is Operanation and it has EVERYTHING!

Giveaway: Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight

24 June, 2014 Nelia

As someone with naturally wavy/frizzy hair, I am always on the hunt for hair products that will make my unruly hair look and feel more manageable. So when I was offered the opportunity to try the new Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight styling creme, I didn’t have to think twice. I was in!

After my first time using the Aveda Smooth Infusion shampoo, conditioner, and styling creme, I was hooked! Even after one application, the three easy-to-use products left my hair feeling softer, shinier, and yes, smoother. And two weeks later, my natural wave was practically gone. Don’t get me wrong, I still had to use a hair straightener to achieve the truly straight and smooth look, but most of my work was already done for me by the hair products I was using. And the best part was that even on hot, humid days, my hair stayed straight and frizz-free!

Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight styling creme promises to progressively straighten curls with every use, and it definitely delivers. Organic cassava root helps form a barrier against intense humidity to help you battle frizz, while the  plant-derived fibers help create a locking layer to help you keep your hair straight longer.

After about 2 months of using Aveda Smooth Infusion line on my hair, I took part in a little photoshoot, showcasing my smooth, straight locks, among other curly-haired Torontonians. You can check out everyone’s incredible results below.

But that’s not all! If like me, you need a little help with your frizzy locks, make sure to enter our Aveda Smooth Infusion giveaway below. You could win a three-month supply of Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight styling creme – that’s enough to get you through the hottest and the most humid of summer days. Sounds good? Enter after the jump!

Big City Style – Spring 2014 Blogger Lookbook for eLUXE!

20 February, 2014 Nelia

eluxe-nelia-belkova-spring-lookbook-2014

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a few sneak peek photos I took at the eLUXE showroom last week. Well, the secret’s out! The lovelies from the Canadian e-tailer eLUXE invited a few of Toronto’s top fashion bloggers to pick out their fave Spring 2014 pieces and style them for the website’s lookbook, shot by the very talented photographer Vincent Lions. I was super stoked to be invited!

The photoshoot was a blast. The amazing Aveda Canada team did our hair and makeup, and I  to shoot with some of my favest blogger buds Sharon and Gracie. Did I mention that we had a blast?!

For my look, I chose the stunning bodycon Clover Canyon neoprene dress, topped by a Tibi tweed jacket, and the most perfect white ela clutch. The outfit was very “me” – colourful and optimistic. It felt awesome not having to wear tights, and to have a summery braided do – summer may still be a few months away, but at least I got a taste of it last week.

If you still haven’t, make sure to check out eLUXE’s fun spring lookbook for a selection of covet-worthy pieces modelled by Toronto bloggers. Let me know what you think in the comments!

What I Wore: The Perks of Wearing Wallpaper

4 December, 2013 Nelia

CHANEL Yorkdale Boutique Opening - Nov 28, 2013 (10)

Yesterday, I wrote about the new CHANEL boutique that opened at Yorkdale Shopping Centre last week, and today I will show you what I ended up wearing to the event. When I first saw this Zara ensemble online, I’m pretty sure cartoon hearts started popping up above my head, so of course, order it I did. So when I was standing in front of my closet, fretting about having nothing to wear, this “suit” became my last-minute solution. And better yet, it went perfectly with my treasured CHANEL shoes. Mission accomplished!

After finally putting it all together, I waltzed into le bf’s office to ask for his opinion…only to see his jaw drop to the floor, and hear him beg me…literally beg me not to wear my Zara masterpiece to CHANEL. I believe it sounded something like this: “Oh, hun, no. No, no. Oh, no. Please, no. No.”, all the while covering his mouth with his hands. Undeterred by le bf’s pleas, as you can see, I still wore my wallpaper-like getup to the party…and I am happy to report that I have yet to regret it. It was a fun outfit to wear in a sea of black and white, so who cares if the pattern was a tad (a lot?) wallpaper-ish? I had fun with my blogger friends, made my Christmas (and lifetime) wishlists, and finally took my precious CHANEL shoes out for a spin! What’s not to love? Sometimes it’s not a bad idea to go against the grain.

So what do you think? Are you with le bf on this one, or do you think this is a fun look? Share your honest opinions in the comments.

Giveaway: Bloggers Love To Shop!!!

16 October, 2012 Nelia

ford-canada-vaughan-mills-shopping-bloggers-trip

Last Saturday, Kim, Anita, Gracie, Hawley and I jumped into our comfy Ford Escape and set out on a mini road trip to Vaughan Mills Mall armed with gift cards and the mall’s new social shopping app to do some pre Toronto Fashion Week shopping. Our mission – find a perfect fashion week outfit. Dying to check out Holts Last Call and J.Crew outlets, we entered the mall pretty much running, grabbed some Starbucks for energy, and hit the floor!

ford-canada-vaughan-mills-shopping-bloggers-trip

Three hours later and still at Holts Last Call, looking through rows of Tom Ford, Alexander Wang, LINE Knitwear, Prada, and so much more, the girls and I finally made our first purchases. Anita – a gorgeous Jil Sander blazer for $240 (originally $3000!), Gracie – the sexiest pair of Tom Ford heels I’ve ever seen, Kim – a skin-tight A.L.C. leather dress pretty much made for her, Hawley – a Philip Lim sweater, and a cool burgundy hat, and last but not least, I picked up a green fish scale Prada clutch, and a stunning Maryam Keyhani necklace…each for a fraction of an original price. SCORE!

ford-canada-vaughan-mills-shopping-bloggers-trip

Using the mobile shopping app on our phones, we were able to find our next stops in no time – J.Crew outlet and Joe Fresh store, where we did some more damage. Lucky for us, the app advised us of the extra 20% off at J.Crew, which we made sure to take advantage of!

When it was time to leave, we stuffed our numerous bags into our Ford Escape, typed in our next destination’s address into the GPS, and set off for Toronto, happy to know that each one of us found some amazing deals, and that come fashion week, we won’t be standing in front of our respective closets having nothing to wear!

Style-Off: Libertine for Aldo Rise

16 April, 2012 Nelia

aldo-rise-style-off

Welcome to the 2nd installment of Style Blog Style-Off, featuring two of my fave Toronto bloggers – Anita Clarke and Gracie Carroll, rocking the hottest shoe collab (possibly) ever! This week’s Style-Off’s challenge was to style a pair of amazing (and surprisingly comfy) Libertine for Aldo Rise ($155) black and white platform wedges, and though I might be biased here…but I think we did pretty darn great! Funny thing…looks like neon green is definitely having its moment in the spotlight, because we certainly did not plan on matching our accent colors!

As with the last Style-Off, the winner gets the bragging rights, and a free drink. And to up the stakes some more, we’ve decided that all the Style-Off winners will get to go face-off in the final Style-Off challenge a few months later. Sounds good? Choose wisely, and vote for your favorite look below!
