CHANEL Spring-Summer 2020 Collection

1 October, 2019 Nelia

As you may know already, CHANEL is always my most-anticipated show during Paris Fashion Week. I love seeing the new accessory designs for the next season, I love checking out the new selection of tweed blazers, wishing that perhaps one of them will be THE ONE I’ve been searching for. I always look forward to the reveal of the collection’s theme and the nearly-always-awe-inspiring set design. I know that it takes many hours/days/weeks/months to design a collection, cast the models, build the sets, and put it all together. A fashion show is a result of many hours of blood, sweat, and tears, and a culmination of so much hard work, which is why seeing that publicity-hungry “comedian” storming the stage during the final walk felt so gross to me. I didn’t find it all that humorous when Gigi Hadid had to literally put a stop to this woman’s antics. I hate that Virginie Viard’s first ready-to-wear presentation since Karl Lagerfeld’s passing was interrupted by someone so selfish and unfunny.

But enough about her and on to the impeccable Spring-Summer 2020 collection itself. Personally, I loved it. The models sauntered from “roof” to “roof” in elegant, modern, but still very CHANEL looks in classic shades of black, white, blue and red. There were youthful tweed rompers and jumpsuits that I would wear every day of my life if I could. There were classic CHANEL bags imagined in intricate tweed, chains, and pearls. Bows and dainty CCs adorned dresses and sweaters, with many of the looks cinched with belts of varying thickness. And while I don’t think I could pull off the pleated waist denim the way the models did so effortlessly, the striped knit twinset pairing felt fun and fresh for spring, a style hack I’ll be borrowing next season.

And while I didn’t find my perfect CHANEL blazer in this collection, I did add a tweed romper to my never-ending “dream wardrobe” wishlist. How could I not, when they look this good?

Met Gala 2017: The Best, The Worst, and The Meh

2 May, 2017 Nelia

I was about to write a ragey post about all of the boring and unimaginative looks from this year’s Met Gala (I’m looking at you Gwyneth Paltrow/Salma Hayek/Jessica Chastain/etc), literally shaking my head at all of the A-listers who showed up in prom-wear even though they have access to top tier designers…but then I decided not to. Instead, here are my favourite looks: Rihanna flawless in Comme des Garcons, Solange in Thom Browne, my new fave Ruth Negga in Valentino, Pharrell and Helen Lasichanh cool as always in Comme des Garcons, and Cara Delevingne in CHANEL Haute Couture. Of course, there were a few other standouts – Lily-Rose Depp in CHANEL Haute Couture looked both perfectly age-appropriate and interesting at the same time, Zendaya looked smashing in a Dolce and Gabbana ball gown, Tracee Ellis Ross was dressed perfectly appropriate for the night in Comme des Garcons, and Lily Collins looked both edgy and sweet in Giambattista Valli.

If I had to pick a few looks for the Worst Dressed list, I would choose Gisele Bundchen in a forgettable dress styled with a pony tail (why even bother?!?!), Gwyneth Paltrow in an ill-fitting minimalistic Calvin Klein that was so offensive to me on a night honouring Rei Kawakubo, and Bella, Gigi, Kendall, and Hailey – all for different reasons, but all missing the mark. Sarah Jessica Parker was noticeably absent this evening…prompting an instagram treasure hunt and conspiracy theories. I for one, missed her creative interpretation of the theme. And though, admittedly, I don’t always love what she wears to the Met Gala, at least she’s never ever boring.

What did you think of “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” red carpet? Share your fave looks in the comments.

CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2016 Collection

26 January, 2016 Nelia

Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to make us want bugs all over us! But not just any bugs…only CHANEL will do. “High-fashion ecology” was the latest inspiration behind the CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2016 collection, with wood chips used as beading, and exquisite gowns created from recycled paper, organic woven yarn, and wild cotton. Subtle and not-so-subtle nods to nature were everywhere – in silhouettes, embroidery, jewelry, and embellishments. Models walked down the grassy runway sporting single bejeweled bug earrings, cap-toe cork wedges, dramatic double-eyeliner, and Leia-esque buns.

As with all CHANEL Couture collections, the craftsmanship was out-of-this-world-amazing – ornate embellishments that adorned most of the gowns must have taken an unspeakable number of hours to complete, and it showed. Speaking of stunning gowns, I am hoping CHANEL darling Kristen Stewart will show up in one of these to the Oscars…the people demand something fresh and exciting…and if I see another “naked” dress on another red carpet, I will drown my laptop in a champagne bath! But I digress…

Grand Palais was transformed into a serene garden, complete with trees, water lily ponds, green lawns, and blue skies. It was a perfect setting for this eco-conscious collection. I had so many personal favourites…and while I won’t be able to afford any of the pieces from this collection, I can at least borrow some styling tips from this show – from the single statement earring, to belted evening bags, to “a bug’s life” embellishments. Thanks to CHANEL and Karl, we are like totally buggin’!

First Look at H&M x Balmain Collaboration Ad Campaign!

25 September, 2015 Nelia

H&M x Balmain collaboration is only about a month away from hitting the stores and now we have this first look at the collection’s ad campaign, and OMG – it’s epic! It takes a lot to take attention away from beauties like Gigi Hadid, Jourdan Dunn, and Kendall Jenner, but in all honesty, I don’t care who the models in this ad are, because all I can see are the clothes and accessories! The jewelry! That dress!! Those blazers!!! I have a feeling that line-ups for this collab are going to be insane, so I think you’d better start strategizing.

What They Wore: Chanel No. 5 “The One That I Want” Party

16 October, 2014 Nelia

Chanel-No5-Crystal-Renn

Speaking of amazing parties…What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall at this CHANEL bash! Earlier this week, the brand celebrated the release of the latest CHANEL No 5 “The One That I Want” ad campaign, shot by Baz Luhrmann, and starring Gisele Bundchen. And while the short film is definitely mesmerizing, this time, I couldn’t take my eyes off the stylish attendees instead. Just look at Crystal Renn! That gown! That hair! That makeup! So damn beautiful! And Poppy Delevingne! I’m in love with her kaleidoscopic dress and bright clutch. Granted, I’m not as obsessed with Poppy as I am with Crystal, but finally seeing pieces from the CHANEL Dubai Cruise 2015 collection outside of the context of a fashion show is definitely making my heart beat faster. Here’s hoping more celebs will wear these stunners to red carpet premieres and such – SO much potential here.

As for the belle of the ball – Gisele – well, she looked beautiful, of course, as she always does, but my heart belongs to Crystal Renn and her starry gown, and her fierce eyebrows, and her flawless face. Dear Karl, I nominate Crystal for the next CHANEL campaign. Please and thank you.
