Style Blog Travels: Boating in Capri

26 July, 2017 Nelia

Before our trip to Italy this summer, I told le bf that we are definitely, 100%, non-negotiable renting a boat as soon as we get to Capri. Mostly, because one of my happiest memories in life involved boating in Capri and I wanted him to experience the joy of cruising around this beautiful island with me. He wasn’t psyched about navigating an unfamiliar boat in an unfamiliar area, but as I said – non-negotiable. Spoiler alert: he ended up loving it! If you’re into swimming, beautiful views, wind in your hair and sun in your face, then you too must rent a boat in Capri the next time you find yourself on this gorgeous island – it truly is the best.

While doing my boat research, I stumbled upon Capri Boat Banana Sport company and I am happy to report that they were professional, well-organized, and affordable – would hire them again without hesitation. Renting a boat for 2 hours cost us EUR 90 (each additional hour is only EUR 30, and the all-day rate is EUR 220), the staff was very helpful, walking us through the ins and outs of operating and anchoring their boats, as well as giving us a bit of background info about the island’s best sights along the way, before taking us to our boat. It was such a straightforward process, that both le bf and I immediately felt at ease.

Boating in Capri is very easy, even for inexperienced boaters – there is no reef to worry about, the water is fairly calm, there are plenty of spots where you can drop anchor and go for a swim, and the island itself isn’t very large, so you can cruise around without worrying about getting lost. As long as someone in your group has a driver’s license, you’re all set. There are a lot of stops to make along the way, so you may need more than 2 hours to finish the trip, but it was just enough time for us.

After our boating expedition, which included swimming, going through the Faraglioni arch, and just the overall feeling of being truly alive, we returned our yacht boat, and headed to Terrazza Brunella for lunch. We had a reservation, so we took the funicular to the center of Capri from Marina Grande – the quickest way to get to the top. This wasn’t our first time at Terrazza Brunella, and once again we were not disappointed – the food was top-notch, as was the service and the views.

Post-lunch we did some window shopping along Via Camerelle, but somehow I was able to walk away empty-handed. The store that really caught my eye on this trip was Wonderland, which carried a great selection of vintage bags and accessories. The shop itself is very cute, so check it out if you have time.

Because our boat to Sorrento was departing early, we didn’t have time for a visit to Anacapri, but having visited it in the past, I was ok with skipping it. We took the funicular back to Marina Grande and headed to our dock, sunkissed, with salt in our hair, and bellies full of clams. On our way back to Sorrento, le bf told me that boating around Capri was a highlight of our trip for him, and I couldn’t agree more.

Sponsored Post

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you already know that I have a soft spot for Minnie Mouse. I’ll take any excuse to rock those mouse ears! Well, this week I have a very special reason to don them – January 22nd is National Polka Dot day, and who rocks those polka dots better than Minnie Mouse?! In fact, Minnie is getting her very own exhibit in Los Angeles to celebrate her signature style! Minnie Rocks the Dots is an interactive fashion and art installation that will take fans on a “journey through the history of Minnie’s influence on fashion and pop culture since her black and white debut in 1928 and evolution into colour”. The exhibit will take place at The Paper Agency, 1050 S Olive St, Los Angeles, CA 90015, will be free and open to the public on January 23 from 12-8 pm PT.

But even if you’re not anywhere near LA, you can still celebrate Minnie and National Polka Dot day by infusing your outfit with some playful polka dotted items, like this adorable phone case or comfy slippers from Ardene. Or you can enter our giveaway! Details after the jump!

What I Wore: Bluffin

It’s been a crazy few weeks…first, a clay pipe burst at our house, flooding our basement, then work got super stressful, and finally I got a killer cold. After working all last weekend, I have to say I am ready for a break…perhaps another trip to Scarborough Bluffs is in order.

A couple of weekends ago, le bf and I set out to find the infamous cliffs, and after a couple of hours of hiking and a couple of misses, we finally stumbled upon the spot. With breathtaking views of turquoise water below us, I couldn’t believe we were actually in Toronto. After spending some time at the top, we tried hiking down one of the steep cliff sides to get to the beach, but my sandals weren’t exactly proper climbing gear, so we decided to call it a day. Next time, we will start at the bottom.

So tell me, have you ever visited this Toronto gem? Share you experiences in the comments.

What I Wore: Beautiful Marrakech

15 April, 2015 Nelia

what-to-wear-in-morocco-2
Last month, after the whirlwind Discover CHANEL program in Paris, le bf and I took some time off to travel to Morocco. I’ve always been intrigued by this North African country, hearing stories of delicious food, beautiful crafts, and breathtaking locales, so the excitement factor was high. Since our schedules were pretty tight, we decided to spend our time in Marrakech, Fez, Chefchaouen, and Casablanca. And while I’ll be sure to share my faves from each city later on, today, I wanted to focus on what I ended up wearing.

While planning our trip, I was googling anything and everything I could find about Morocco and the appropriate way to dress there. As a predominantly Muslim country, yet time and time again described as “not so conservative”, Morocco was a mystery to me…as was the “dress code”. I knew that local women mostly covered up head-to-wrist-to-ankle, but that tourists were technically allowed to wear whatever…though wearing things that expose too much could lead to potential harassment.

My goal on this trip was to be respectful of local customs, while looking cute, and staying comfortable. There’s no way I was going to cover up wrist to ankle in 30-degree weather, but shorts and strappy dresses were out too…or were they? To stay true to my style, I ended up packing my fave slip dresses, but brought a few printed caftans to throw on top, creating somewhat modest-looking outfits. I also packed a few midi and maxi dresses, ones I could wear with a leather jacket on cooler days, or with a scarf draped around my shoulders and cleavage. For train rides, I made sure to bring a few pairs of comfy, loose-fitting pants and tees. I also brought my wool fedora, both to cover up my hair, and to shield my face from the sun.

Another thing I was grateful to have read about before my trip is footwear. Word of advice – don’t bring open-toe sandals to Morocco, unless you plan on spending time poolside or on the beach. Don’t bring your fancy shoes either, because if you plan on wearing those in the medina, you may end up ruining both your shoes and your feet. Most streets in old towns of Marrakech and Fez are paved with slippery cobblestones, and with streams of people everywhere, there’s a good chance your feet will be stepped on, and if that’s not reason enough, I have two words for you – donkey droppings. I brought an old pair of comfy ALDO shoes that were pretty worn out, and on our last day in Fez, after they’ve served their purpose, I threw them out. Highly recommended.

In the end, our trip was lovely. I avoided the harassment that I’ve read so much about, and felt comfortable and confident throughout. I did see tourists in short-shorts, strappy camisoles, and skimpy dresses, but was happy that I chose the more modest route. At the end of the day, I think Morocco is progressive enough for you to wear whatever you like, so it really is up to you and what you’re comfortable with. I’ll be posting more looks from my Moroccan adventures throughout the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

What I Wore: And It Was All Yellow…And Blue

Yup, I added yet another coat to my winter outerwear collection. This one’s from Forever 21, and it’s surprisingly warm, and well-made. It has a bit of a cocoony feeling to it, so if you’re into the slim look in your winter coats, this one’s probably not for you. But personally, I love all the layering possibilities this one brings. Last weekend, I wore it with my trusty Prada faux fur stole, adding even more colour to an already bright coat. You know my philosophy – if it’s gloomy outside, there’s nothing like colourful clothing to snap you out of the funk. And I must say, it worked like a charm!

Events: Blogger Bazaar Summer 2014

17 July, 2014 Nelia

blogger-bazaar-toronto-2014-52

Last month, I joined some of Toronto’s best fashion bloggers (Sharon and Tara backseatstylers.com, Kimberly thesoulsofmyshoes.com, Anita iwantigot.geekigirl.com, Hawley sidewalkhustle.com, Anya imtheitgirl.com, Liane etsy.com/ca/shop/thelostsea, Jessica everafterlacquer.com, and Monica aimeluxury.com) in the SALE OF THE CENTURY! Ok, maybe not. But it still felt pretty epic. Our second Blogger Bazaar, held at Toronto’s Soho House, was a huge hit. Lots and lots of readers, friends, and curious passerby showed up, shopped, sipped complimentary vitaminwater, met other like-minded aka fashion-obsessed peeps, and helped us find good homes for our new and gently used treasures. It was a fashion madhouse, and I loved every second of it.

As promised, we had amazing swag bags to give away, filled to the brim with goodies kindly provided by ALDO, Artemano Decor, Call It Spring, Dove, eLUXE, essence, FLARE, Forever 21, Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris, Roots, TRESemme, and vitaminwater. But even better than free swag, some of the deals were just too incredible to pass up. One lucky girl scored a gently-used Burberry trench for less than $200. Another picked up a pair of Wayfarers for $50. And of course there were even more deals on pieces from Hermes, YSL, Isabel Marant, Marni, Proenza Schouler, Prada…you name it – all priced to sell. Impulse buys, well-loved staples that sadly no longer fit, vintage goodies, there were all kinds of treasures to be found, and a lot of you made them your own. At the end of the day, 10% of all sales were donated to the Corsage Project charity. Just a little something to give back to our community.

The best and most memorable part of this summer’s Blogger Bazaar was once again meeting and interacting with our readers. So many of you showed up and spent the time to support our little event, and for that I am incredibly thankful. Without you, the readers, our blogs would just be empty shells, but you make it so much more than that. Thank you! Hope to see you again at the next Blogger Bazaar this September!

What I’m Wearing: Orange You Glad?

29 January, 2010 Nelia

Don’t usually feel this way, but I felt decidedly girlie the other day. Hence the floral skirt, pearl earrings, and bow necklace. I love playing dress-up in my closet once in a while. It used to be way more often (like a few times a day), but now…with all work and no play, dress-up takes a back seat. Which is kinda sad.

Oh, and I bought yet another Breton-striped shirt. I think this is officially a full-blown obsession…I have over 10 very similar striped tops (cropped, tank, tee, long sleeve, long sleeve dress, 3/4 sleeve, and a few others)…and I still have an eye on one more at H&M. Do I need an intervention?

I’m Wearing: Top, Rings, Belt, Tights – H&M; Skirt, Necklace – Forever 21; Cardigan – Zara; Purse – Marc Jacobs; Shoes – Winners

Forever 21 Magazine

16 November, 2009 Nelia

F21MagazineCover

It’s a slow day today. As in I am slow today. I think it’s the Monday blahs, which means I’ll be eating Reese’s cereal out of a box, while doodling on my Christmas shopping list. Yeah, not very productive. Was reading my new book this weekend – “Nightlight”, a “Twilight” parody. So far, it feels like my brain is slowly melting with every word I read. Not good. Is this how the real “Twilight” books are? Can’t imagine ever finishing all of those thick volumes, if they too have such crap writing. Will pick up the “Lovely Bones” after this one. Though might chicken out again, I’ve heard it’s oh-so very sad. Don’t want sad, want inspirational.

Speaking of publishing, Forever21 is getting its own magazine! In about a week or so, we’ll be able to read our first Forever21 publication – a seasonal magazine, focusing on trends, styling tips, and of course Forever21’s clothes and collaborations. The issue will be free with a $40 purchase, and will also be available online. Can’t wait to see what they cook up!

Twist by Forever 21

29 July, 2009 Nelia

Today is the launch of Cirque 21 collection from Forever 21’s new in-house designed line TWIST! I wonder how good this new collection is. The lookbook is definitely cute, but really does not look all that special and kinda reminds me of other Forever 21 items they have in stores already. The only item that I think of getting is the Miu Miu inspired dress (above). Other than that, will have to wait and see.
