Dermalogica Beauty Junkies’ Group Therapy

9 April, 2010 Nelia

Thanks to Faulhaber PR team, Al and I were invited to participate in Group Therapy at Dermalogica’s International Dermal Institute in Toronto. Having read numerous articles on the merits of Dermalogica’s skincare, I’ve always been curious, but not enough to actually venture out and try some. Well, last night I finally got a chance to try the full 5-step program!

The event brought together over twenty different fashion, lifestyle, and beauty bloggers, and it was really cool to meet some faces behind the awesome blogs! So after a bit of mingling, prosecco, and MACARONS (on which I could subsist for my entire life), we settled into our chairs (just like at school), put our white headbands on, and began our skincare lesson. I won’t get into too many details of what went on, apart from the fact that everyone had to remove their makeup and no tweetpics were allowed (though I must say that everyone looked great without makeup), but if you want to read about the products we used during our lesson, the full list is after the jump!

Kelly Cutrone Cries in Toronto

19 March, 2010 Nelia

Kelly Cutrone, the woman-powerhouse behind People’s Revolution made a quick visit to Toronto earlier this week as part of the promotional tour for her book “If You Have To Cry, Go Outside”. Having seen her on TV, whipping vapid LA-NYC girls into submission, as well as famously asking maybe-anorexic girl if she’s ok (“cuz you’re so skinny!”), I came to the Indigo In Person interview with my mind made up. Especially, after the tough-love PR maven opened a can of whoop-ass on local Toronto bloggers of She Does The City, after they called her a “wicked witch of fashion PR”. Ouch.

Well, it all changed after the interview. Though I went in hoping that Cutrone would make me cry (it’d make for a kick-ass story), Cutrone  was the one tearing up (real human tears). After the warm intro by the fabulous Jeanne Beker, Cutrone showed humility, by admitting that Beker is a far bigger star than she is, and that she was honored that the Fashion Television host was there to interview her. The interview itself was quite insightful, showing a real woman, behind the feared TV personality. I especially loved her talking about motherhood, and how she believes that being a woman and being a mother are two completely different things, and that she tells her daughter Ava, that a mother is “a slave who loves her”. By the end of the session, I felt like I could learn a thing or two from her, instead of thinking that everyone that works at People’s Revolution is seriously into S&M. She seemed humble, and sincere in her answers, and…likable! Yeah, I know – shocker. And most of all – human, not a reality TV robot.

And though I didn’t have the patience to wait in line to meet Kelly, instead I got to meet Jeanne Beker herself! Super bonus! First Miss J. Alexander, and now Jeanne Beker. Spring starts off with a fashionable bang! I am so excited about what else is to come! Bring it on!

Aaahhhh! I met Jeanne Beker! Amazingly nice, even to the fangirling masses! Worship Canadian fashion’s godmother!

Miss J. Alexander Celebrity Walk Off at Holt Renfrew

17 March, 2010 Nelia

What did I do last Saturday, when it rained buckets outside? Why, I WERKed it with Miss J. Alexander! Ok, I didn’t actually WERK it with him, but I sure did get a chance to meet his fabulous self and snap up his new book “Follow the Model”. Holts’ “Celebrity Walk Off Event” drew a sizable and fashionable crowd, including Anita of I Want-I Got, Amy Verner of Globe and Mail, and MTV’s Dan Levy among others.

Al and I got a chance to eat some cotton candy, chat with some women that seemed to worship the ground Miss J struts on, and of course, meet the one and only. Another highlight of my day was actually meeting Amy Verner in person. She’s gorgeous, and very lovely! I, also, spotted many stylish peeps, whose photos you can see below. All in all, it was a fun event, and worth the wait. My only gripe is that I missed the actual walk off, hence no photos. But I am sure everyone did fantastic…or as Miss Verner put it, at least noone became “fashion roadkill” ala Sex and the City.

Of course those glasses are Chanel. Why do I even bother to ask. What a great outfit!

Love this BCBG jacket. Ever since I snapped this photo, I’ve been seeing it everywhere! So lovely!

Atelier Swarovski in Toronto

8 March, 2010 Nelia

Last week, Al and I were lucky to be invited to the launch of the Spring 2010 Atelier Swarovski collection in Toronto. The exclusive Atelier collection includes pieces designed by “world-renowned and Canadian-raised fashion designer Jason Wu, the talented and acclaimed UK fashion designer Matthew Williamson, footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood and talented jewelry design duo Anthony Nak”, and is available for he first time in Canada at the Bloor Street Gallery store only.

As a huge fan of Matthew Williamson’s psychedelic prints, Jason Wu’s classy dresses, and Kirkwood’s ah-mazing shoes, I was super psyched to see their pieces. But to my surprise (and delight), Anthony Nak’s vintage-inspired art-deco pieces were my favorite of the bunch. The yellow crystals looked like perfect amber doppelgangers, and I could totally see these as something I would pass down to my grandkids. I also loved Nicholas Kirkwood’s simple designs, which is surprising, since he’s known for his footwear, not jewelry. Gold earrings from his collection could dress up any outfit without being too showy or over the top. The same could not be said about Williamson’s designs. His jewelry is not for the shy ones, with huge multicolored geometrical shapes to wear around your neck or on your ears. Not for me, but interesting to look at.

Overall, I walked away liking a few pieces from the collection. As someone who’s never considered Swarovski as a place to shop for jewelry, I’ll be keeping my eye on these new collections, as more than a few pieces were worth a second look. If you love jewelry and are interested in checking out Atelier Swarovski, stop by the Yonge/Bloor location, or go on their official site www.atelierswarovski.com.

Grand Opening of Anthropologie in Yorkville

4 August, 2009 Nelia

I have looooved Anthropologie ever since my Houston days, and was always a bit sad that Toronto peeps were missing out on that amazing store! When the first location opened up in Toronto, I was very excited, but still sad…because Don Mills is way too far for me and my friends…but now there’s no sadness in sight!…For those under a rock, the second Anthropologie store opened its doors this month in Yorkville, and a couple of my friends and I were super happy to participate in the “Bits and Baubles” workshop and the Grand Opening of the store last Friday.

The “Bits and Baubles” workshop was a lot of fun! We were given limitless supplies (textiles, beads, thread, buttons, flowers, glue guns, etc) to create our very own statement necklaces! And let me tell you, it was a fantastic way to spend our Friday night, very different from our usual dinner, martinis, and gossip Fridays! The girls and I crafted, strung, and glued…and results were more than satisfactory. But who knew that necklace-making is such hard work?! Thankfully, sangrias were on hand to keep us from passing out from all of the handy labour!
