Golden Globes 2017: Best Dressed

8 January, 2017 Nelia

“I decided early in the year not to wear any dresses to awards shows to be a gentle reminder to young girls and women that you’re not required one if you don’t want to, to really be yourself and that your worth is more than the dresses that you wear.” – Evan Rachel Wood

Not only did Evan Rachel Wood looked amazing at the Golden Globes, but she had a very positive message to share about her choice of outfit. What’s not to love? This year’s Golden Globes red carpet was actually pretty good – not too many boring outfits, a few that I didn’t love, but could appreciate, and these ten looks that I actually really enjoyed. Some more than others, like Emma Stone’s stunning Valentino gown – so appropriate for her La La Land role, almost too on the nose, but too beautiful to criticise.

Isabelle Huppert looked radiant in her powder blue gown; and she rocked that ear cuff too! Ruth Negga’s Louis Vuitton dress was futuristic perfection (and that hair!). Natalie Portman’s Jackie-inspired Prada look was very fitting and both interesting and flattering. And of course, Evan’s impeccably-cut suit was one of the highlights of this red carpet for me.

There were a few others in memorable gowns, like the beautiful see-through lace on Kerry Washington (Dolce and Gabbana) and Kristen Wiig, Claire Foy in a lovely sequined pink dress, and Kristen Bell (whom I love in The Good Place) in a sexy black gown with a plunging neckline. They all looked incredible, interesting, and stylish. As a bonus, I’ve added a photo of Millie Bobby Brown looking super cute at her first major awards show…because Stranger Things should’ve won something and Millie is adorable.

So there you have it, my top 10 Best Dressed from the 74th Golden Globes. Share your picks in the comments!

TIFF 2016: Favourite Moments

22 September, 2016 Nelia

rexfeatures5896126d-jpg-191957-original
Another TIFF has come and gone, and all I’m left with is residual fatigue and lots of amazing memories. 30 minutes in the same room as Ryan Gosling? Check. Brunch with Sigourney Weaver? Check (well, kinda). Below are my most memorable moments from #TIFF16!

1. Variety Studio
Always a highlight of my TIFF, Variety Studio is usually located in a pretty small room with a handful of famous people going in and out, where you have to act cool, even when you really want to fangirl like you’ve never fangirled before. I’ve visited Variety Studio as a guest of Moroccanoil for the last few years, and I always walk away with lots of juicy star observations. This year, I breathed the same air as Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, John Legend, Gael Garcia Bernal, Gerard Butler, Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy, Sam Claflin, Miranda Cynthia Nixon, and the cast of The Eagle Huntress.

Despite being in the same room as Ryan Gosling for nearly 30 minutes, I didn’t actually talk to the Canadian heartthrob. But I did watch him, like a creeper that I am. Ryan was shorter than I imagined, and looked very serious the entire time he was at the lounge (unlike Emma Stone, who was animated and smiled a lot). Strangely, I didn’t see the two interact very much – Emma was mostly with her people and Ryan with his. The only time we got to see Ryan’s warmer side, was when he spotted the star of The Eagle Huntress Aisholpan in her native garb, and went over to introduce himself. After a brief chat, he offered to take photos with Aisholpan and her family. I wasn’t quite sure whether the Kazakh family actually knew who Ryan was, but they were happy to snap a few photos with the actor. At the end of his visit, Ryan took some time to sign a postcard for Airbnb and Make-A-Wish foundation, and while waiting for the elevator, he stood right in front of me for nearly 5 minutes. It took all of my strength not to be that person and ask him for a photo; I played it cool instead…but those were the longest 5 minutes of my life. File this one under #TIFFregrets.

Just like in prior years, the British actors were my faves. They just seem to have a camaraderie that the Hollywood actors don’t seem to posses. This year, I watched the cast of Their Finest, including Sam Claflin, Gemma Arterton, and Bill Nighy, work the room and charm everyone in the vicinity. Bill Nighy made eye contact with anyone around him and said “hello”, which shouldn’t seem like a big deal, but it really is, because most of the stars don’t even make eye contact with the “civilians”. Gemma looked relaxed and beautiful, as did Sam, who seemed to be in a good mood and looked very friendly. Sam played the Holt Renfrew claw machine and had to try a couple of times before finally winning. It was cute to see how competitive he got. He also came by the Moroccanoil station to learn more about the products and walked away with a goodie bag of his own.

Other lucky guests who took home some Moroccanoil included John Legend (who chose to walk 6 flights of stairs down instead of waiting for the elevator), Cynthia Nixon (who came in looking a bit stern, but seemed to liven up at the sight of Moroccanoil…seriously!), Richard Gere (who popped in for a few minutes and was gone in a flash), and Gael Garcia Bernal (who was just as cute as I remember from back in 2007 when I met him at MTV, but didn’t spare a minute to sign the Airbnb/Make-A-Wish postcard, which was disappointing).

2. Brunch at Brassaii
Stargazing is a pretty popular activity during TIFF. You can find throngs of fans camping out on King St, in front of theatres, and waiting outside of various hotels, but did you know that you can have brunch at Brassaii, where all sorts of movie stars arrive to attend the Hollywood Reporter Lounge? It’s true! My friend Al and I stopped by Brassaii to try their new brunch menu, and in just one hour, we watched Sigourney Weaver walk in and out (apparently she requested a special vegetarian soup), and saw Felicity Jones in a pretty striped outfit. Had we had more time to hang out, we would’ve also seen Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, Douglas Booth and Bill Nighy, Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac, Pharrell and Taraji P. Henson (who was greeted with a banana cream tart, lemon meringue tart, a white chocolate/dark chocolate brownie, and a Happy Birthday song). It’s so easy – the stars literally come to you, and you don’t have to jockey for position, or stand in lines for hours – just enjoy delicious food like Oreo Pancakes and Fried Chicken and Waffles, while trying not to pass out when Ryan Gosling strolls by.

Oscars 2015: Best Dressed

23 February, 2015 Nelia

Marion-Cotillard-Dress-Oscars-2015
If you tuned in to my #YorkdaleOscars live-tweet session, you already know that I thought that this year’s Oscars were a bit of a snoozefest. NPH’s jokes fell flat, the red carpet wasn’t very exciting, and the show felt like it lasted FOREVER. But despite all that, once I started going through my best-dressed picks, I came up with quite a few faves. A little disclaimer…not all of these looks are 100% amazing in my books…but they were the best of the bunch – the most exciting, most beautiful, most elaborate. There were also some bad ones…like Anna Kendrick’s bridesmaid dress, or Karolina Kurkova’s rumpled duvet gown…but we won’t go there. Instead, let’s see who brought their A (and A-) game to Dolby this year.

Marion Cotillard’s Christian Dior Couture was one of the faves…not only because of the unusual construction and exquisite detailing, but because it was Marion who was wearing it. On anyone else this would not have been a win. But she really sold it.

Laura-Dern-Oscar-2015-Best-Dressed
As I mentioned on Twitter, Laura Dern isn’t usually a fashion girl, but she BROUGHT IT this year in a silver Alberta Ferretti gown. Bow down!

Julianne-Moore-oscar-2015
Julianne Moore was the clear winner this year…not only taking home the coveted Best Actress award, but rocking a custom CHANEL Couture gown like it was made for her…because it was.

Golden Globes 2015: Best Dressed

12 January, 2015 Nelia

First of all, I had a blast live-tweeting with all of you last night! We didn’t always agree about our best dressed picks, and we didn’t always agree about the winners, but I’d like to think we kept it pretty civilized. And while I may be a bit late with my best dressed picks, I still wanted to post them, because there were SO MANY looks that I actually loved last night. Let’s get to it!

Golden-Globes-2015-Best-Dressed-Naomi-Watts
Naomi Watts was one of the first looks of the night that I loved. I have a weakness for yellow gowns on the red carpet, and this Gucci number was perfection on Naomi. Beautifully accompanied by a statement Bulgari necklace and a bold lip, this one was a clear winner.

Golden-Globes-2015-Best-Dressed-Emma-Stone
This Lanvin jumpsuit on Emma Stone was one of my absolute fave red carpet looks ever. It’s perfect for Emma and her quirky sense of style. The beaded top made this dressy enough for the red carpet, and that humongous bow at the back brought the drama. LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS.

Golden-Globes-2015-Best-Dressed-Keira-Knightley-Chanel
I LOVED what Keira Knightley wore last night. A lot of people hated this CHANEL number, but not I. It’s quirky and different, but still intricate and oh-so-stunning. I can imagine that it was even better in person. If I had to change anything, I’d make it a bit longer, or a bit shorter, as the length seems just a bit off. But other than that, Keira really did glow on that carpet last night.

Golden-Globes-2015-Best-Dressed-Dakota-Johnson
Dakota Johnson in CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2014 made my heart beat faster. Back in September, I got a chance to see this gown at the CHANEL showroom in New York, and ever since then, I’ve been wondering which celeb would be cool enough to wear it on the red carpet. The top part of the gown is made out of grey concrete beads, somehow a perfect nod to that movie Dakota will be starring in next month, non?

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2014

6 May, 2014 Nelia

liu-wen-zac-posen-met-gala-dress-2014

What’s more important – adhering to a dress code or bringing something fresh to the red carpet? Last night at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, some celebs decided to pay homage to the celebrated American designer Charles James, while others chose to wear something exciting instead. No shade to James, but after seeing one too many taffeta-clad celebs, I cheered when I glimpsed Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada amazingness. Sure, it wasn’t exactly inspired by Charles James, but it was fun to look at, and if anyone could pull off the bejeweled net dress with feathers, it’s Lupita. Same goes for Kirsten Dunst’s Rodarte Star Wars gown – amazing, and probably not the most appropriate for that particular theme, but still…so cool! Another look I couldn’t resist last night was Chloe Sevigny in Kenzo, which was probably much too modern for last night’s theme, but I loved it all the same.

But it wasn’t solely the rebels that caught my eye, I absolutely adored Liu Wen in a Zac Posen stunner (which I just got to see at Holts last week!), Emmy Rossum in a floral Carolina Herrera gown, Giovanna Battaglia in an 0ff-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana, and Hailee Steinfeld in a very theme-(and age)-appropriate black, white, and pink Prabal Gurung gown.

Mostly though, I was underwhelmed with last night’s red carpet looks. My favourite Style Fille Diane Kruger looked washed out in pale blue (though Joshua more than made up for it!), SJP disappointed in a messy Oscar de la Renta, Johnny Depp came dressed as Colonel Sanders, Kate Upton, who isn’t exactly a high-fashion darling, looked frumpy in a Dolce & Gabbana gown, and the rest of the lot just looked…been-there-wore-that.

What do you think of last night’s Met Gala red carpet? Which celebs got it right in your opinion? Share in the comments!

Oscars 2012: Emma Stone vs. Nicole Kidman

26 February, 2012 Nelia

emma-stone-giambattista-valli-nicole-kidman-balenciaga-oscars

Back in 2007, Nicole Kidman wore arguably one of the best Oscars gowns ever. It was a red Balenciaga dress with a dramatic bow, and she looked gorgeous in it. Fast forward to 2012, and to lovely Emma Stone in a gorgeous Giambattista Valli gown…which I loved, but seeing how similar it is to Nicole’s iconic look, I had to ask. Who wore it best? Whose dress do you like best? Did Nicole do it better in Balenciaga, or is it Emma’s look that is red hot in your books? Take the poll below, and let me know!

Style Fille: Ginnifer Goodwin vs. Emma Stone

13 January, 2012 Nelia

After poring over the numerous People’s Choice Awards (which admittedly I don’t watch) celeb photos, my two fave outfits belonged to Ginnifer Goodwin and Emma Stone. Both looked gorgeous, stylish, with a loud pop of color. But who wore it best? I do realize that the outfits are completely different, but what I want to know is which one is more your steeze? I think I’m team Ginnifer…but I kinda really love both. Take the poll below and let me know what you think.
