What I Wore: Bal Harbour Shops

It’s been nearly a month since our Miami trip, and I can’t tell you how much I miss dressing like this. A lace shift, a pair of sandals, and some shades. No pesky tights, no bulky coats, no hats, no gloves…Le sigh.

These photos were taken at Bal Harbour Shops – a beautiful outdoor shopping centre, where le bf and I spent a day shopping and eating our faces off. More about Bal Harbour Shops to come in my Miami recap post, but in the meantime, here’s a little taste of summer in the middle of Canadian winter – all blue skies and greenery. Is it spring yet?

What I Wore: Wynwood Walls

One of the things I was most looking forward to in Miami was a visit to The Wynwood Walls. After seeing dozens of photos of beautiful murals, painted doors, and even flower walls, I knew it was going to be a very special place, and that we couldn’t miss it. Of course, being a fashion blogger, I had to pose in front of several of my favourite walls, as one does. But there were so many more that le bf and I got to admire, wondering why Toronto’s graffiti alley isn’t as well-known. Although, no offence to our graffiti alley, the murals we got to see in Miami were definitely not your usual street art – those were intricate, interesting, and expertly-painted murals, not your run of the mill “tags”.

We saw murals painted by Kashink, Lakwena, Maya Hayuk, and of course, the infamous flower wall by Fafi – all women artists, who kick ass at street art, which has primarily been a boys club until not too long ago. Inspiring and so very cool to see.

After exploring street art of Miami, we hit up Miami’s new Design District for a delicious lunch at Mandolin, where we sipped unsweetened iced-tea, and nibbled on delicious cheese saganaki, bulghur salad, and kefte, on their lovely patio. One of our most memorable meals in Miami to be sure.

Post-lunch, we climbed into a cab, driven by a crazy woman (she literally drove us crazy), and returned to South Beach to relax by the pool at our hotel. Just another day in paradise.

What I Wore: Welcome to Miami

It’s Friday, and I’m going to keep it light and indulge in a little #FBF on the site today. This outfit post is from day 1 of our little Miami getaway last week. Yup, just last week, I got to wear a summery dress and shades on a sandy beach. Just last week, I didn’t have to wear tights, or a jacket, or gloves. It was glorious.

On our first day in Miami, le bf and I didn’t do much, except for a little exploring around our hotel, which included a walk on the beach at sunset, window-shopping on Collins Ave, and a dip in our hotel’s rooftop pool at night. It wasn’t very eventful, but we were happy to take it easy after a few hectic weeks at work, and just enjoy each other and this new city that we’ve never visited before. Today, as flurries swirl outside my office window, I am dreaming of warmer days, bare shoulders, and sun in my eyes. I think I need another getaway.

Style Fille: Cate (The Great) Blanchett Does it Again!

10 September, 2013 Nelia

Even though we’re in the middle of TIFF madness, I wanted to post this amazing Christian Dior dress Cate Blanchett wore at the Deauville Film Festival. It is just so stunning! Cate always manages to look polished and regal no matter what she wears, but she also doesn’t stick to just one silhouette/look and ride its coattails. *cough* Jennifer Aniston *cough*

Regardless of whether you think this looks flattering or not, I would take this “tent” dress over a million LBDs. Just me?

What They Wore: Celeb Looks from Met Gala 2013

7 May, 2013 Nelia

met-gala-2013-punk-katy-perry-dolce-gabbana

This year’s Met Gala theme was “PUNK: Chaos to Couture”, and since so many of the celebs in attendance nailed it, I couldn’t simply post my fave looks and be done with it. This time, I chose to bring you not only my fave looks, but also the runners-up, and the headscratchers all in one post.

Let’s start with my faves. I loved the ornate Dolce and Gabbana dress on Katy Perry, the grand headpiece on SJP, the elegant Margiela on Gwen Stefani, the stunning, but decidedly NOT punk Givenchy gown on Rooney Mara, and an orange moomoo-like goodness on Ashley Olsen. None of those looks screamed punk to me, but I found these dresses to be interesting, fashion-forward, and gorgeous too. Well, SJP’s panty-flashing Giles gown wasn’t exactly my type, but if anyone could’ve pulled it off it’s her.

Apart from my top 5, I enjoyed so many other looks! From Giovanna Battaglia gilded head-to-toe goodness, to Solange Knowles looking lovely in a Kenzo gown that was perhaps a tad too casual for the Met, but beautiful nonetheless, to Emma Watson in a very sexy Prabal Gurung…there was no shortage of fashion porn at this year’s gala. Some celebs decided to don simple LBDs to the event, which in my opinion was a total waste (I’m looking at you, Michelle Williams), but others made up for it with punk hair (Miley Cyrus), and studs galore (looking gorgeous, Sienna Miller!).

All in all, I loved this year’s fashion offerings. I hate wading through a million photos of boring outfits, and this year there weren’t too many.

So now it’s your turn! Which celebs brought their A-game to the 2013 Costume Institute Gala, and which crashed and burned? Share your opinions in the comments!

SAG Awards 2013: The Good, The Bad, and The Boring

27 January, 2013 Nelia

sag-awards-2013-nicole-kidman-vivienne-westwood

I don’t know if it’s just me, but SAG Awards this year were really short on the wow factor. Too much boring black, ill-fitting gowns galore, and as a result someone I find super annoying is my choice for Best Dressed of the night. What is happening?! Anyway…here’s my Good, Bad, and Ugly Boring line up for the night.

GOOD: Giuliana Rancic

As annoying as I find her, this vibrant blue Max Azria Atelier gown is both simple and simply stunning. I love the unembellished black (navy?) belt, her understated jewellery, and the messy up-do. Good job, Giuliana’s stylist!

Wishlist: Dior Rings

25 November, 2010 Nelia

“I want Lanvin, not diamonds” – said the pouty-mouthed Natasha Poly in the Lanvin for H&M promo video. Well, now that I do have Lanvin (for H&M), I also want the diamonds. Ok, not the really flashy diamonds – I’m no golddiger – but the super cute ones, adorning these lovely Dior rings. How cute are they??? I know this isn’t news, as these rings have been around for quite some time now, but for some reason I am really loving them right now. Oui Oui, Mon Chéri!

Shopping: Apartment 909

19 July, 2010 Nelia

Apartment 909
909 Dundas St. West
Toronto, ON
416-916-7599

Not only can Dundas St. West brag about a few of Toronto’s best brunch places (see Hoof Café and Saving Grace), but as it turns out the shopping isn’t that bad either. Apartment 909 is a little vintage shop at 909 Dundas St. West, full of very nice surprises! From mint-condition vintage Dior and Gucci bags, to beautiful Lanvin dresses, the lovely shop-owner Beth is happy to show you the treasures she has in store. Prices are very reasonable. I mean, very very reasonable. Where else can you get a genuine crocodile skin Pierre Cardin clutch for around $300? Or that same Dior purse for under $200? For the condition those goodies are in, and for the selection Apartment 909 carries, it is very well worth a trip.

Some of the brands available at the store include (but are not limited to) Vivienne Westwood, Ungaro, Lanvin, Chanel, Pucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Helmut Lang, J.P.G., Dior and Yves Saint Laurent. On my last visit, I picked up a pair of dead stock Marc by Marc Jacobs red jelly shoes. Perfect size, perfect fit, never been worn, and so very lovely. I would’ve been crazy not to jump on those! And there are so many other gems in that store, like an entire wall of vintage ladylike purses, and bundles of beautiful printed scarves.

So next time you’re in the area, having delicious brunch, make sure to stop by Apartment 909, and check out their amazing selection. Make sure to bring some cash, as credit and debit cards are not accepted. And if you do stumble upon a lovely find, make sure to brag and share some pics with us!

Friday Faux Pas: Tavi’s Bow

29 January, 2010 Nelia

To some, even the thought of a 13-year old in front row of a Dior couture show is already blasphemous. But to have to watch a show from second row through Tavi’s “pesky hat”, must’ve been mighty annoying. What are your thoughts on this? Is it wrong to wear an obstructive hat in front row, or is she entitled to wear whatever she feels is right?

SATC2 Style: More Shoes, Please!

8 September, 2009 Nelia

satc8

I don’t know why, but every time I see new photos of Sarah Jessica Parker and the gang filming SATC2 scenes, my heart leaps a little. It’s definitely part nostalgia, but mostly…it’s the accessories! More specifically – the shoes. Pat Field has this amazing ability to make clothes (and characters) come to life by pairing them with appropriate shoes/bags, etc. Love her styling choices so much!

Don’t you just love that they re-used Carrie’s Dior newspaper dress from Season 3 (very fitting to recycle it in this economy)! I guess it can be considered vintage now? So far the only outfit that I actually hate is Charlotte’s pink “power-suit”. It reeks of Businesswoman Barbie to me. Can’t wait to see more Carrie outfits…More shoes please!
