What They Wore: Met Gala 2019

6 May, 2019 Nelia

Guys, I don’t know about you, but this was one of my fave Met Galas in a while. With “Camp: Notes on Fashion” as the theme, I was hoping to see a swan dress or two a la Bjork, but my hopes weren’t especially high. Well, I was wrong, because so many celebs delivered! Perhaps not everyone went full camp, but so many did, and thankfully, I didn’t see a lot of “pretty”, “nakedy”, “boring” outfits. Well, Gisele did wear a pretty boring dress and Karlie Kloss showed up a clubby, wrinkly Gucci mini, but I wasn’t really expecting much from these two anyway. Instead, there were plenty of bonkers, bananas, cuckoo outfits…and it was so much fun! Some of my faves are embedded in this post, including Ezra Miller’s epic everything, Janelle Monae wearing all of the hats, Naomi Campbell looking ageless, Tessa Thompson the epitome of perfection in CHANEL, Jared Leto in Gucci and with a head to spare, Gemma Chan in a stunning Tom Ford-designed/Elizabeth Taylor-inspired headpiece, and Kim Kardashian dripping in crystals in a custom-made Thierry Mugler. Did you have a favourite outfit of the night? Check out the rest of the looks after the jump!

What They Wore: Oscars 2019

24 February, 2019 Nelia

Though I’m currently away on vacation, I knew I had to log in and blog about the 2019 Oscars fashion after seeing THAT dress on Gemma Chan. It’s pink, it’s tent-like, it has pockets and a ruffled collar, and it’s freaking perfect. Not boring, not predictable…just perfect. Thank you, Gemma, and thank you, Valentino for really bringing it. Gemma wasn’t the only one having a pink moment. I loved Maya Rudolph’s floral cape gown and that chic bob of hers…she looked incredible. Speaking of incredible, how gorgeous did Tessa Thompson look in her CHANEL Couture gown?! Understated, elegant, but still so far from boring. Love her so much, and love that the brand recognizes her amazingness too.

But while we always expect the women to make a splash on the red carpet, it was Billy Porter who seemed to be having the most fun in a velvet ballgown skirt, paired with a structured jacket on top, and attitude to match. Actually, this year’s Oscars had a veritable buffet of exciting looks on male actors: Stephan James and David Oyelowo in velvet Etro suits, Mark Ronson in haute bellboy attire, Nicholas Hoult in that drapey yet structured Dior jacket…so much better than the expected tuxedos, non?

There were also a few disappointments in my books…Lady Gaga in a whatever gown (I bet she had a million options to choose from, and this gown is what she chose?!), Brie Larson in Celine looking beautiful but also not very exciting, and Constance Wu, whom I looooove, in a fine Versace that just missed the mark for me (too reminiscent of Michelle Williams’ infamous marigold frock, but not as well-executed perhaps?!).

I’m rushing this post because my time on this business center computer is limited to 30 minutes…so I am sure I am missing some stellar and not-so-stellar looks, but I am including most of my faves in the gallery below. Let me know if you agree in the comments!

Dior Saddle Bag is Back for Fall 2018

19 July, 2018 Nelia

“Everything old is new again” seems to be especially true for fashion. Trends come and go, and come back again for another round several years later. But this one hits pretty close to home, because the first time Dior’s iconic Saddle Bag became highly covetable thanks in no small part to Carrie Bradshaw, I was a woman obsessed. I absolutely adored the “nothing like I’ve ever owned before” look of the bag and I was especially into the one style with the word “Christian” embroidered on the back, with a little heart stitched on next to it. You see, that was the name of my crush at the time, and I needed to have his name on my bag. And so I did. That arguably tacky denim Dior purse was not the only saddle bag I owned. A couple of years later, after the initial saddle hysteria died down, I found a more classic black saddle bag with silver hardware at the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets Dior boutique, and quickly scooped it up. And while the denim bag with the name and the heart is long gone, the simple black bag is still hanging around at the back of my closet.

Now that the bag has been relaunched by Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri for the brand’s Fall 2018 collection, and is apparently priced starting at USD 2,350 for a small version, I am left a little unsure about whether to start wearing it more, or capitalize on this price and popularity increase and sell it to the highest bidder. This bag definitely holds sentimental value…reminding me of happy college times, of puppy love crushes, and of those glorious days when Sex and the City was a groundbreaking show and my fave source of style inspo…way before instagram and street style. I couldn’t help but wonder, should I hold on to this fashion relic, embracing its renaissance, or should I follow that rule about being old enough to wear the trend the first time around?

Let me know your thoughts on this trend’s revival and on my personal dilemma after the jump!

Oscars 2017: Worst Dressed

26 February, 2017 Nelia

How boring was the red carpet tonight, you guys?! What a letdown! A sea of blah gold and red dresses, with nary a hint of imagination. Of course, I did have a few faves (though picking more than two was a tough task), but let’s start with a few baffling choices first.

First (and certainly worst) is Dakota Johnson in Gucci. That godawful dress! What is that dress??? It reminds me of Sandra Bullock’s character’s wedding gown in The Proposal. I can appreciate Dakota’s attempt to wear something unexpected, but the colour, the fabric, and the styling are all wrong for her. Pair this wrinkly mess of a dress with limp hair and blah makeup, and you have a major wasted opportunity. Dakota is a vibrant young actress, and her Golden Girls-inspired look tonight is super baffling, unless she lost a bet, or someone at Gucci has a juicy piece of blackmail on her. Otherwise…I really don’t get it.

Next up is Felicity Jones in Dior, whom I also really like…but her dress belongs on a little girl at a ballet recital, not on the Oscar red carpet.

I actually really liked Alicia Vikander’s ruffled lace dress, but that hair! That hair belongs in the shower, tied up so that you don’t get it wet…not on the red carpet. There’s effortless hair, and then there’s this hair…

Michelle Williams usually brings her A-game to any event she attends, so admittedly I hold her to a higher standard. So when I saw her in this simple (read: boring) gown, I felt disappointed. It’s obviously not hideous, but it’s also not Michelle Williams-worthy.

Unlike Michelle Williams, I don’t usually hold Halle Berry to a higher standard of red carpet dressing, but I really, really didn’t like her Atelier Versace gown tonight. There’s something so messy about that black mesh on the bodice, and the one-shoulder thing feels very dated. Of course, Halle Berry has superior genes, and she still looks more beautiful than most people, but as far as gowns go, hers was definitely not my favourite.

SAG Awards 2017: Best Dressed

29 January, 2017 Nelia

Over the last few weeks it seems that the world has gone insane, so in case you needed a distraction, here are some pretty celebrities wearing pretty gowns at the 2017 SAG Awards. Truth be told, I was pleasantly surprised to see some really exciting choices on the red carpet this year. Nicole Kidman wowed in a birds of paradise Gucci creation, Michelle Williams looked flawless in a glittering Louis Vuitton gown, while Black-ish star Yara Shahidi wore a delightful Naeem Khan beaded frock. Evan Rachel Wood made good on her promise to skip dresses this season and wore yet another impeccable Altuzarra suit, this time in rich blue velvet. Janelle Monae who’s also known for her beautiful suits chose an intricate CHANEL frock instead, accessorised with the cutest hair-do ever.

Michelle Dockery (aka Lady Mary Forever) wore a colourful striped Elie Saab gown (similar to Yara’s), and as someone who loves colour, stripes, and Downton Abbey, this was definitely a hit for me (though that hair was a tad too severe). Kirsten Dunst looked lovely in a bridal-like Dior gown (very appropriate for a newly-engaged star), while Thandie Newton’s Schiaparelli creation looked like it belonged in a museum…in a good way. And while I’m usually not a fan of the “naked” dress, Taraji P. Henson looked simply stunning in her Reem Acra gown. Lastly, I loved Claire Foy in The Crown, and perhaps my judgement is clouded by my adoration of the actress, but I quite liked the Valentino gown she wore on the red carpet (paired with gorgeous Tiffany & Co. earrings), even if the dress wasn’t my absolute favourite.

And there you have it, my SAG Awards 2017 Best Dressed. Share yours in the comments!

What I Wore: Sosken Studios Coat

21 March, 2016 Nelia

After a few very spring-like weeks of bare ankles and leather jackets, Toronto received a bit of a reality check. With temperatures plummeting, I had to re-think my fashion week outfits in order to avoid the dreaded fashion week flu. And secretly, I was actually a little excited, because instead of my usual leather jackets, I got to wear my new Sosken Studios Bali coat instead…straight off-the-runway! The new line designed by outerwear expert Marisa Minicucci is a glorious addition to the Canadian fashion landscape, with elegant silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and a great selection of colours. I’ll write more about the collection itself later this week, but in short, this collection is THEBOMB.COM!

And while I don’t usually go for muted shades very often, I fell in love with this oatmeal topper – it’s a classic piece that will stand the test of time, and will surely endure all of my future hair colour changes too. I love this coat so much, I feel a little sad that spring is coming. But regardless, this awesome coat is going to be in my closet waiting for temperatures to drop again. And when they do, I’ll be ready!

What I Wore: New Faves

Even though I wore this outfit in February, this is definitely more of a spring look if you ignore the fat snowflakes all around me. I’ll be wearing a variation of this a lot once the weather warms up in Toronto. I finally got my hands on the coveted Acne moto jacket, and I want to wear it ALL THE TIME. The leather is so buttery soft, and even though it’s a bit heavy, I feel like it elevates everything I wear. The dress is from H&M, and it’s also a fave – super comfy and cute…with or without tights. Finally, the shoes are surprisingly winter-friendly. When I was wandering the slushy streets of NYC, the platforms kept my feet from freezing and my ankles away from the snow and sleet. They also have a great amount of grip, so I didn’t slip and slide like I sometimes do when wearing heels. And I don’t know about you, but I totally used to wear similar flatforms when I was in high-school, as inspired by the Spice Girls. Circle of life?

Oscars 2016: Worst Dressed

28 February, 2016 Nelia

The-Oscars-2016-Worst-Dressed-Brie-Larson-Gucci
Brie Larson is widely considered a favourite to win the Best Actress Oscar…but her choice of a gown is leaving me completely baffled. If you’d told me that this dress is from the Mother of the Bride section of Laura Petites store, I would believe you. It’ just so bad! From the ruffles, to the colour, to that bridal sash…it’s SO BAD! I am certain that Brie had access to the best of the best, and this is what she ended up choosing. It’s baffling to me.

The-Oscars-2016-Worst-dressed-Jennifer-Lawrence
JLaw is another Oscar-fave. She is nominated again this year, and she showed up wearing this. What the hell is this dress??? It’s Dior Hate (typo and it stays) Couture, but it doesn’t make it good. It’s kinda awful actually. Paired with that makeup and hair, her entire look shouts middle-aged. Where’s that fresh-faced ingenue? Where’s the excitement? I think it’s time to find a new stylist!

What I Wore: Pink on Pink

7 October, 2015 Nelia

Even though it was only a few weeks ago, it feels like it’s been ages since our trip to New York for NYFW. And while the trip itself was mostly for work, we still managed to grab a few outfit pics to share on the site. I am especially happy to share them because of my new-ish rainbow hair colour, which sadly looks very faded at the moment.

The cool thing about having unicorn hair is being able to make any outfit stand out. I can choose to wear all-black-everything, or go all out and rock the most vibrant things I can find in my wardrobe, and no matter what – it all looks exciting with my pink/purple/blue/yellow locks. Makes getting dressed a lot more fun!

This outfit is quite obviously not all-black, and I love the way the pink and purple stripes go so well with my hair…even le bf grudgingly admitted that he liked this look, which NEVER HAPPENS! So in my books that’s a triple win…even if I did have to suck in my stomach all day long. Please remind me to never buy any more bodycon dresses, no matter how cute!

What I Wore: Scarftervention

1 October, 2015 Nelia

striped-dress-neck-scarf-ela-handbags-3
I am a huge procrastinator, and because of that, I have a stockpile of outfit posts from this summer (some from as far back as MARCH!) waiting to be posted. So now that it’s actual October and freezing outside, I am finally starting to publish my summer outfit posts…as one does. Sorry if it’s not relevant for you…but hopefully some of you are in warmer countries, where October feels the same as July in Toronto, in which case please ignore all of the above and enjoy.

This is obviously from back when I still had grey hair (which I now kinda miss), and was obsessed with this H&M red scarf. If you follow me on Instagram, then you probably saw this scarf numerous times already, because I pretty much wore it on a daily basis for 2 months straight. Now that my hair is pink and rainbowy, red doesn’t seem to suit my look as well, so the scarf has been retired…for now. It’s not a bad thing – if not for my new hair, I may have needed a scarftervention…plus people kept asking me if I was hiding hickeys. I wasn’t…most of the time.
