Holidays 2013: All I Want For Christmas…

18 December, 2013 Nelia

christmas-wishlist

Christmas is officially only one week away and I am getting more and more excited with each passing day. Excited for all the family get-togethers, yummy desserts, holiday movies on the couch, and of course…the presents! This year, gift shopping was a breeze…half of it done online, with the other half swiftly purchased at a couple of select stores in a couple of easy visits. I was even able to grab something special for myself to celebrate yet another year of blogging, working, and keeping it all together. Hooray!

Sadly, le bf wasn’t as lucky. I have to admit, getting a Christmas prezzie for me is kind of a tough task, since I tend to be quite picky and lack any patience, which means that anything I really want (and can afford), I end up getting for myself. So this year, to make his ordeal a little easier, I’m making an official “Dear Santa/Husband” wishlist and calling it a day. Some of these are a little less realistic than others, some are catlady things that I’m pretty sure are on his “banned forever” list, but between the adorable Charlotte Olympia travel kit, and the cutest gummy bear clutches ever, I’m hoping this completely impractical gift guide will get him through this impossible task…and maybe give you (or your man) some ideas too. Happy Shopping!

1. Charlotte Olympia Travel Kit
2. Gucci Disco Bag
3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Rue Cat Sweatshirt
4. Fornasetti Candle
5. Moschino Bucket Bag

How great does Lupita Nyong’o look in this sleek Prabal Gurung tuxedo dress? With purple lipstick, white pumps, and a Charlotte Olympia domino clutch, she’s a vision in black and white. And the best part – she looks comfortable, happy, and poised. Now that’s how you do red carpet!

Shopping: 5 Pieces Worth Splurging On

15 August, 2013 Nelia

Investment-Pieces-Bag

I often get questions from friends and readers alike, asking me to cover what I consider investment pieces – expensive clothing and accessories that aren’t a waste of money. And while  most of the usual “investment” pieces aren’t really that great of an investment if you are looking to make a monetary return, in my opinion, sometimes it pays to spend a little (or even a lot) more on something that will make you happy for a long time, something of superior quality and craftsmanship, something that you could eventually pass down to your grandchildren. So if you are looking to buy something of substance, here are my top 5 pieces worth splurging on, and brands to invest in.

1. Quality Bag

A great quality bag is a must-have for any (and every) working woman out there. Unlike men, we really do need a place to stash our wallet/lipstick/compact/iPad/iPhone/book/snacks/keys/life…A woman’s bag is something that gets used day after day, so why not make it a great one? A timeless high-quality bag is definitely my number one investment piece to consider. Yes, a cheaper one would certainly do the job, but if you consider cost-per-wear (total price paid divided by the number of times the item is used), even a pricey purse could be affordable. If you love your bag, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll wear it everywhere and with everything. And given the quality of your investment, you’ll have it for years to come instead of being used up and thrown out like a cheaper version.

If you are going to make the leap and buy an expensive bag, you should consider its longevity. You don’t want to buy a super-trendy piece, only to realize that it’s totally passé three months later. Invest in a classic shape, and a solid colour. It doesn’t have to be “boring” black (although black is the most versatile), but make sure to pick a colour that you could pair with a few things in your wardrobe, and one that would make you smile too.

Brands To Invest In: Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga, Hermès, YSL

Investment-Pieces-Statement-Accessory

2. Heirloom

Whether it be a luxurious timepiece, or a pair of  in-your-face of sunnies, every woman should have a statement accessory to make her outfits pop. Investing in a piece of jewelry, or an accessory that will surely become an heirloom some day down the road is much better than spending the same amount of money on a pile of fast fashion baubles that will break or become discoloured after a couple of uses.

One of my fave pieces in my jewellery box is a turquoise YSL Arty ring. Every time I wear it, I get compliments left and right, and I have yet to find an outfit I couldn’t spice up with that pretty cocktail ring. Same goes for my classic Chanel brooch – so far, I’ve pinned it to my blazers, shirts, and sweaters, but it can also be worn as a necklace, and a faux belt buckle. Don’t you wish your mom or grandma passed down something like that to you?

Brands To Invest In: Cartier, Tiffany and Co, Chanel, Prada, YSL

What I Wore: Baby (Not) On Board

9 August, 2013 Nelia

scarf-dress-4

Funny thing happened on the subway the other day. As le bf and I were rocking and swaying, trying to keep our balance, an older woman looked up from her seat and asked me if I would like to sit down. Not understanding what her offer suggested, I looked at my husband, as he looked back at me in dismay…and then we both looked down at my belly. The dress…this dress…was billowy, sure, but did I actually looked pregnant enough to warrant a seat on a crowded subway car? Really?!?!? After the initial shock, I said “no, thank you” as graciously as possible, and proceeded to suck in my stomach for the rest of the ride.

So now the question is…do I stop wearing this dress? One friend suggested I burn it, but the truth is…I actually love it. Of course, I could belt it and solve my dilemma, but I actually prefer it loose and comfy. So I guess my options are now: a) wear it and suck in my stomach as much as I possibly can, or b) wear it and stick my stomach out to get a seat on the subway during rush hour. I haven’t decided which option I’m going to go with, but either way, this dress is just too perfect for hot sticky summer days for me to give it up. What do you think?

15 July, 2013 Nelia

cat-lady-fashion-essentials-gift-guide-3

Judging by the multitude of cat Instagram photos, cat videos, and cat-related Buzzfeed links, among a multitude of other cataphernalia, being a cat lady has never been trendier. Every day I see adorable cat pics all over my social media, and you know what? I freaking love it! As a cat lover and part-time owner of an adorable black kitty, I’m all over the cat lady trend. I scoured the internet for some awesome cat lady essentials, and this is what I came up with! Wishlist: Charlotte Olympia Perfume Bottle Clutch

25 April, 2013 Nelia

Charlotte-olympia-perfume-bottles-clutch-gary-pepper

For a couple of months now, I’ve been obsessed with an empty perfume bottle…But not just any old perfume bottle – a Charlotte Olympia one! First the kitty flats, then the bird clutch, then the Paris flats, and now the perfume clutch. The woman sure knows a way to my heart.

And after seeing the lovely Nicole of Gary Pepper wearing hers so well, my want turned into a need, and now I have to hide my credit card in the freezer, in order to avoid pulling the trigger on this one. Although I do feel like Charlotte’s bags and shoes are almost like pieces of art (don’t judge me!), and I’d cherish them for years to come…so it’s somewhat justified…right?! Or is it my denial talking?

What do you think of these lovely Charlotte Olympia Perfume Clutches? They come in different shapes and colours (1, 2, 3, 4) too! Which one is your fave?

What I Wore: FAJO Magazine’s Love Issue

15 February, 2013 Nelia

fajo-magazine-nelia-belkova-2

Last month, Canada’s leading digital fashion magazine FAJO invited me to participate in a fun little photoshoot for their Love Issue, and of course, I couldn’t say no! I got to wear my own clothes, with the only suggestion being that I wear a little bit of red, because…LOVE…duh! And here’s what I came up with.

The first look represents one of my favourite spring trends – black and white stripes. After searching for a pair of Beetlejuice pants for what seemed like forever, I finally stumbled upon these H&M skinnies, and have been happily wearing them since. For an obligatory pop of red, I chose my brand-spanking-new ela editor clutch, which I won (yay!) from Holt Renfrew, and a swipe of red lipstick.

For my second outfit, I wore more stripes, because that’s what I do best. I also threw on my Charlotte Olympia Luna pumps that I scored on MAJAH sale at The Room, a pair of good old boyfriend jeans, and heart sunnies from my wedding. Simple, fun, and oh-so-me!

For more photos from the photoshoot with the lovely Aleyah Solomon, and for my interview with FAJO’s Julia Eskins, please CLICK HERE. Enjoy!

Valentine’s Day: Gift Guide 2013

12 February, 2013 Nelia

valentines-day-gift-guide-2013

Valentine’s Day is almost here, and if you’ve known me long enough, you know that I’ve been enjoying all that leads up to the actual day – all of the heart-shaped candy, stupid/cute stuffed toys, and everything red and pink. But surprisingly, I still haven’t gotten a present for le bf just yet. It’s so unlike me to procrastinate on things like that, but now that we’re married, and house-hunting, Valentine’s Day gift shopping has taken a bit of a back seat.

Having said that, being a Valentine’s Day-obsessed freak that I am, I still felt that it was important to share my favourite gift picks with you. Either to inspire your loved ones to get you that something pretty, or to inspire you to spoil yourselves. Who says that you need to have a lover to enjoy Valentine’s Day?

Wishlist: Charlotte Olympia Graca Pumps

9 January, 2013 Nelia

charlotte-olympia-graca-bird-cage-pumps

As soon as Christmas and New Year’s Eve are done and over with, my mind automatically fast-forwards to spring, because the thought of 3 more months of cold, snow, and slush is just too depressing to bear. But don’t fret, today’s wishlist item is as cheerful as they come!

This spring, my must-have pair of shoes is Charlotte Olympia’s Graca Pump from the designer’s Glamazon Cruise 2013 collection! A classic red pump at first glance, the heel reveals a colourful bird caged behind an exquisite “cage” heel. As a sucker for kitschy pieces, I am crushing on this pretty bird…hard. I’ll be surely stalking these at The Room, and online…until I get my paws hands on them!
