CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2019 Collection

23 January, 2019 Nelia

The beauty of couture is that you can’t really appreciate it from images alone. It may seem ludicrous to spend an eye-watering amount of money on a gown sprinkled with some sequins, but in reality, these clothes are art – each piece exquisitely made, with every sequin applied by hand, one-of-a-kind. So while going through the photos of the CHANEL Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection, I took my time taking in each image, zooming in to check out the surprises that reveal themselves, like the delicate floral applique made out of feathers, or the dried flowers dipped in resin, or a gown that may appear white on first look, but is actually made entirely out of sequins. Breathtaking!

And while, of course, the mere mortals won’t be running off to boutiques, hoping to score one of these looks, I always hope to see the more creative gowns on a major red carpet, like the Academy Awards. Just imagine Lady Gaga in the look below, or Rachel Weisz in literally anything from this collection?! I know that these two don’t work with CHANEL, but one can dream.

Besides the intricate details, I loved the makeup look created for this runway show. Lower lash line winged eyeliner (instead of the usual top) seems to be fairly easy to replicate, and will surely spice up your usual eye makeup routine, without it being deemed too crazy. CHANEL’s global creative makeup and color designer Lucia Pica used the CHANEL Stylo Ombre et Contour pencil in Bleu Nuit to create the smoky effect, CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Extreme Intense Matte Lip Colour in Épitome on the lips, with a coat of CHANEL Rouge Allure Liquid Powder in Invincible on top, in case you wanted to try this at home.

Golden Globes 2019: What They Wore

6 January, 2019 Nelia

Did you watch the Golden Globes tonight? I totally forgot, so sadly, I completely missed the red carpet and had to catch up on the outfits online. Unsurprisingly, I feel like I didn’t miss all that much. Most stars don’t like to show their cards too early in the award season, and thus many of my usual faves went with snoozy gowns for tonight’s awards (looking at you, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone).

But of course, it wasn’t all forgettable. My fave looks from tonight included Timothee Chalamet in a custom Louis Vuitton harness, Lucy Boynton and Rachel Weisz in Celine, Richard Madden pulling off an all-velvet suit, Janelle Monae in a hot-off-the-runway CHANEL look, and Saoirse Ronan in a slinky chainmail Gucci. I also really loved Olivia Colman’s Stella McCartney look on TV, but not so much in photos.

And while there were a lot of underwhelming looks tonight, Amber Heard’s ill-fitting gown, paired with pretty terrible hair and harsh makeup was my worst-dressed of the night. After seeing (and loving) her in Aquaman, I can’t believe this is what she ended up with on the red carpet.

CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2018

9 July, 2018 Nelia

For most people, including yours truly, haute couture shows are pure fantasy – dream confections worn by beautiful people at magical locations. And having been lucky to see and touch CHANEL Haute Couture pieces in person, I can attest to the impeccable attention to detail, use of innovative materials, and the overall intricacy and luxury of haute couture creations. Which is why after looking at photos of the latest CHANEL Haute Couture collection, I was dying to see what those pieces looked like in person, in motion, and up close, because even in photos, my heart was skipping a beat. Gowns with stunning beaded high-collars, Victorian lace collars paired with puff sleeves, bows, sequins, feathers, and chiffon, oh my! Set against a very realistic backdrop of the Seine boardwalk, the attendees were treated to the chicest Parisian riverside stroll ever, complete with a CHANEL-clad boquiniste, feathered and sequined ankle booties, and bang-heavy hairdos that I’m definitely going to try and replicate for the next gala I attend.

What did you think of CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2018? Which pieces made it to your fantasy wishlist? Share in the comments.

Oscars 2018: Best and Worst Dressed

5 March, 2018 Nelia

I was so excited to watch the Oscars tonight, but both the outfits and the show itself felt kind of lackluster, non? I don’t really know what I was expecting, but none of it lived up to my high expectations. There were a few gowns and suits that looked pretty good, and I did stay up late watching this thing, so here are my personal faves.

Saoirse Ronan’s Calvin Klein felt vaguely Paltrow-ish, but in a good way. She looked fresh in those matching pink pumps and minimalist styling, and I loved the back of that gown. Her Lady Bird co-star, and my personal Best Leading Actor winner Timothee Chalamet looked fly af in that white-on-cream Berluti suit paired with the coolest boots…I want all of this for myself!

Nicole Kidman’s blue dress isn’t my personal cup of tea, but she did look amazing in it, and it’s interesting to look at. I’ll take her gown over any of the other pretty nude frocks, thankyouverymuch. Lakeith Stanfield’s blue suit fit him so perfectly, I wondered whether he was sewn into it. Either way, I love it.

CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2018 Collection

23 January, 2018 Nelia

CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2018 collection was presented at the Grand Palais in Paris earlier today, and this time there were no rockets or supermarkets in sight, just a tranquil French garden and a dream-like collection of frothy gowns, iconic tweeds, sequins, pleats, feathers, and exquisite floral embellishments. And while the soft shades of pink, full skirts, and feathers were certainly ultra-feminine, the exaggerated shoulders on tweed jackets and calf-length booties added some edge. As always with haute couture, zooming into photos is essential for full appreciation of the garments – the level of detail that goes into these designs is exceptional. And since the Oscar nominations were announced today, I am now dreaming about the incredibly talented Best Actress Nominee Saoirse Ronan in CHANEL Haute Couture on the red carpet in March. She always looks great, but I think the marriage of Saoirse and CHANEL would be divine. Make it happen, fashion gods!

Of course, as someone who’s not an Oscar-nominated actor, I can only dream about owning one of these stunning creations, but I truly hope that CHANEL makes a retail version of those incredible tweed boots with transparent heels – I need them in my life so badly!

Emmy Awards 2017: Best Dressed

17 September, 2017 Nelia

Emmy Awards aren’t usually my fave for red carpet fashion, but this year there were several celebs in standout looks that made me sit up and pay attention.

Let’s start with the fab Tracee Ellis Ross in CHANEL Haute Couture – she looked incredible, and she was certainly feeling herself – just look at her instagram! Stunning, stunning, stunning!

Zoe Kravitz is always my fave, and so gorgeous, so it’s no surprise that she’s wearing one of my fave looks of the night – the magical Dior Haute Couture gown. It’s colourful, it has texture, and she’s rocking it with that pixie cut. Also, if you haven’t watched Big Little Lies yet, Zoe is great in it.

Evan Rachel Wood has made a commitment not to wear gowns this year, and I love how creative her red carpet looks have been. Her custom Moschino by Jeremy Scott pantsuit is both elegant and fun at the same time, and I love how regal she looks in it.

Tessa Thompson was another fave tonight in a glorious Rosie Assoulin gown. The vibe is somewhat similar to that of Zoe’s Dior, which could be why I’m so drawn to it – I can never resist a good rainbow gown. I also love the metallic sheen of this dress, the pleats, and the movement of the skirt – it’s just so fun! Can’t wait to see Thompson’s outfits on her Thor promo tour!

Last, but not least, I am really into Sarah Paulson’s Carolina Herrera dress. It’s not as fancy as the other gowns, but the open back and the sleeves make it a standout for me. Plus, who doesn’t love Sarah Paulson?

CHANEL Fall 2017 Haute Couture Collection

13 July, 2017 Nelia

Last week CHANEL showed their Fall 2017 Haute Couture collection, complete with a giant replica of the Eiffel Tower constructed at the Grand Palais and an abundance of celebs like Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton, and (my fave) Aziz Ansari in front row. The collection was inspired by Paris and Parisian women, and featured tweed suits in various shades of autumn, evening gowns shaped like the Eiffel Tower, flared and curved silhouettes, feathers, oversized clip-on earrings, and boater hats in a variety of textures.

I kept looking for an Eiffel Tower minaudiere, but it doesn’t appear to exist, instead most bags featured on the runway were quite minimalistic – tweed clutches worn to match the tweed coats. Feathers were treated as fur, trimming the hems of gowns, draping the shoulders, and wrapped around necks as chic stole-like chokers. And while I’m not holding out hope of owning any of the pieces from the runway, I do hope the boots make it into stores, because I NEED THEM IN MY LIFE. With laces and a modest height lucite block heels, these boots seem like they would go with everything, while actually being comfy. Here’s hoping.

CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2016 Collection

5 July, 2016 Nelia

chanel-haute-couture-fall-2016-9
Couture season is upon us and, of course, this site would never miss a chance to feature some CHANEL Haute Couture amazingness. Skipping the usual frills, CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2016 collection was presented in a pared down setting made up to look like an actual atelier, with petites mains working away in the background. Karl Lagerfeld wanted to pay tribute to the people behind the magical couture creations by dedicating this show and collection to them.

While couture is certainly not the biggest influencer of mainstream trends, this collection seemed to proclaim the return of the strong shoulder. From boxy tweed suits to exquisite evening gowns, strong shoulders dominated CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2016. Perhaps because of all the off-the-shoulder looks as of late, seeing more structure felt fresh and exciting.

I probably don’t have to mention how exquisite the gowns are – all you need to do is look at the detail shots. Evening silhouette was inspired by the work of English illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. Using a variety of fabrics and embellisments like radzimir, ziberline, mikado, taffeta, faille, chiffon, crêpe georgette, organza, silk tulle, embroidered laces, almost transparent grosgrains, stones, matt sequins, beads and feathers, Karl Lagerfeld has once again presented art on the runway. Many of the looks placed a lot of emphasis on the back of the garment as well as the front – this way you turn heads coming and going…that is if you can afford CHANEL couture, of course.

Willow Smith (aka coolest 15 year old) sat front row with her famous father Will Smith, and I couldn’t help but think of her when I saw the sequinned top and culotte combo from the collection. I won’t be surprised if I see her wearing this look on the red carpet in the near future.

Met Gala 2016: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

3 May, 2016 Nelia

Met-Gala-2016-solange-knowles
The first Monday in May is here and so is the annual Met Gala aka Fashion Oscars. After poring over hundreds of celeb pics, I have to say that it was probably one of my fave red carpets in a while…which is why I had such a tough time choosing my faves. This year, there were so many interesting dresses, I couldn’t narrow down my choices to the usual “best” and “worst”, and so, I am just going to post all of the looks that I’d found either exciting, or super boring/terrible, so that you can judge for yourself.

Perhaps the red carpet was extra exciting thanks to this year’s theme – Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Anna Wintour arrived wearing one of my fave looks from CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2016 collection, and knowing first-hand how important both technology and innovation are in creating a lot of the CHANEL looks, I loved her choice that much more. Other stand-outs included Solange in an origami-like David Laport frock of my dreams, Zoe Saldana sporting a gown with an exaggerated peacock-like train, Nicole Kidman in an ethereal caped creation, Kristen Stewart in yet another stunning CHANEL dress, Claire Danes in a glow-in-the-dark ball gown, and Lena Dunham, Jenna Lyons, and Jennifer Konner in custom-made J.Crew tuxes – so fresh and so cool, though perhaps not exactly adhering to the theme of the night.

I have to say that I was very disappointed to see Michelle Williams in a completely forgettable and way-too-casual dress, which was made even worse by her terrible new bangs and drab makeup – a rare misstep for this usually stylish actress. Other misses included Grimes in an ill-fitting dress and dishevelled hair, SJP in a puzzling get-up, Kerry Washington looking like she was going to a Halloween party dressed as a witch, and a whole bunch of people like Elle Fanning, Katie Holmes, Amber Heard, Emily Ratajkowski, Maria Sharapova, among others, who wore completely forgettable dresses, definitely not worthy of the Met Gala. Last, but not least, Taylor Swift, who was the co-chair of this year’s event, totally missed the mark in a cocktail dress that could have come from Banana Republic (no offence to Banana Republic, but it’s usually not Met Gala appropriate).

And there you have it, my faves and not-so-faves from this year’s Met Gala. Which looks did you like? Share your best and worst in the comments.

Oscars 2016: Best Dressed

28 February, 2016 Nelia

The-Oscars-2016-Best-Dressed-Naomi-Watts
It wasn’t the super exciting red carpet that I was hoping for, but I’ll take what I can get. For one, you can always count on Naomi Watts to wear something beautiful but not overwrought to the Oscars. I loved her colourful fishscale-like gown by Armani Prive. The necklace was a nice touch, I just wish she went with a choker instead. Otherwise, she looked perfect.

The-Oscars-2016-Best-Dressed-Amy-Poehler
I was also pleasantly surprised to see Amy Poehler slay it on the red carpet tonight. Amy’s embroidered Andrew Gn gown is fun, flattering, and definitely not boring. She looked amazing, and you can tell that she was feeling good too.
