Met Gala 2017: The Best, The Worst, and The Meh

2 May, 2017 Nelia

I was about to write a ragey post about all of the boring and unimaginative looks from this year’s Met Gala (I’m looking at you Gwyneth Paltrow/Salma Hayek/Jessica Chastain/etc), literally shaking my head at all of the A-listers who showed up in prom-wear even though they have access to top tier designers…but then I decided not to. Instead, here are my favourite looks: Rihanna flawless in Comme des Garcons, Solange in Thom Browne, my new fave Ruth Negga in Valentino, Pharrell and Helen Lasichanh cool as always in Comme des Garcons, and Cara Delevingne in CHANEL Haute Couture. Of course, there were a few other standouts – Lily-Rose Depp in CHANEL Haute Couture looked both perfectly age-appropriate and interesting at the same time, Zendaya looked smashing in a Dolce and Gabbana ball gown, Tracee Ellis Ross was dressed perfectly appropriate for the night in Comme des Garcons, and Lily Collins looked both edgy and sweet in Giambattista Valli.

If I had to pick a few looks for the Worst Dressed list, I would choose Gisele Bundchen in a forgettable dress styled with a pony tail (why even bother?!?!), Gwyneth Paltrow in an ill-fitting minimalistic Calvin Klein that was so offensive to me on a night honouring Rei Kawakubo, and Bella, Gigi, Kendall, and Hailey – all for different reasons, but all missing the mark. Sarah Jessica Parker was noticeably absent this evening…prompting an instagram treasure hunt and conspiracy theories. I for one, missed her creative interpretation of the theme. And though, admittedly, I don’t always love what she wears to the Met Gala, at least she’s never ever boring.

What They Wore: Cannes 2015 Best Dressed

20 May, 2015 Nelia

Cannes-2015-Poppy-Delevingne
I love Cannes fashion. Most of the time celebs aren’t afraid to make style statements on the croisette, and we get to feast our eyes on over-the-top gowns, as well as the more subdued, real-life-appropriate day outfits. It’s a win-win!

This year, I found the fashions particularly inspiring, with some of the world’s most stylish leading ladies all over the red carpet, I had a tough time picking my faves. Diane Kruger, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sienna Miller, Lupita Nyong’o, and many others brought their A-game to Cannes, and it was glorious.

I know that the festival isn’t over just yet, and I’ll update this post as more photographs become available, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy Poppy Delevingne in her exquisite CHANEL gown, the always regal Cate Blanchett in an otherworldly Giles creation, Diane Kruger in the most adorable Dolce and Gabbana dress, and many more.

Share your faves in comments and stay tuned for more beautiful looks from Cannes 2015!

Shopping: 5 Pieces Worth Splurging On

15 August, 2013 Nelia

Investment-Pieces-Bag

I often get questions from friends and readers alike, asking me to cover what I consider investment pieces – expensive clothing and accessories that aren’t a waste of money. And while  most of the usual “investment” pieces aren’t really that great of an investment if you are looking to make a monetary return, in my opinion, sometimes it pays to spend a little (or even a lot) more on something that will make you happy for a long time, something of superior quality and craftsmanship, something that you could eventually pass down to your grandchildren. So if you are looking to buy something of substance, here are my top 5 pieces worth splurging on, and brands to invest in.

1. Quality Bag

A great quality bag is a must-have for any (and every) working woman out there. Unlike men, we really do need a place to stash our wallet/lipstick/compact/iPad/iPhone/book/snacks/keys/life…A woman’s bag is something that gets used day after day, so why not make it a great one? A timeless high-quality bag is definitely my number one investment piece to consider. Yes, a cheaper one would certainly do the job, but if you consider cost-per-wear (total price paid divided by the number of times the item is used), even a pricey purse could be affordable. If you love your bag, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll wear it everywhere and with everything. And given the quality of your investment, you’ll have it for years to come instead of being used up and thrown out like a cheaper version.

If you are going to make the leap and buy an expensive bag, you should consider its longevity. You don’t want to buy a super-trendy piece, only to realize that it’s totally passé three months later. Invest in a classic shape, and a solid colour. It doesn’t have to be “boring” black (although black is the most versatile), but make sure to pick a colour that you could pair with a few things in your wardrobe, and one that would make you smile too.

Brands To Invest In: Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga, Hermès, YSL

Investment-Pieces-Statement-Accessory

2. Heirloom

Whether it be a luxurious timepiece, or a pair of  in-your-face of sunnies, every woman should have a statement accessory to make her outfits pop. Investing in a piece of jewelry, or an accessory that will surely become an heirloom some day down the road is much better than spending the same amount of money on a pile of fast fashion baubles that will break or become discoloured after a couple of uses.

One of my fave pieces in my jewellery box is a turquoise YSL Arty ring. Every time I wear it, I get compliments left and right, and I have yet to find an outfit I couldn’t spice up with that pretty cocktail ring. Same goes for my classic Chanel brooch – so far, I’ve pinned it to my blazers, shirts, and sweaters, but it can also be worn as a necklace, and a faux belt buckle. Don’t you wish your mom or grandma passed down something like that to you?

Brands To Invest In: Cartier, Tiffany and Co, Chanel, Prada, YSL

Spring 2013 Trends: In Living Colour

7 March, 2013 Nelia

spring-2013-trends-nokia-lumia

Sponsored Post

After being introduced to the new Nokia Lumia 920, and the amazing range of colours these phones come in, I was reminded of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and all the amazing spring trends I spotted outside of the tents. Naturally, this prompted me to jot down my personal spring shopping list to make sure that I’m ready not only for Toronto’s own fashion week, but for the warmer weather ahead. Not surprisingly, my list included a lot of colour. Here are some fun spring 2013 trends that I can’t wait to try this season, and hope you might like as well!

1. Graphic Black and White

Stripes, checks, dots, you name it! Graphic black and white prints are certainly having their moment. And as someone who’s obsessed with stripes in general, this trend feels mighty refreshing to the usual pastels that inevitably come each spring.

2. White Pumps

For the last few months, it seems that every stylish person out there has been obsessed with white pumps. Celebs like Kerry Washington, Carrie Bradshaw…errr…SJP and Rihanna, among others, have all been spotted wearing this trend on red carpets everywhere, and why not? Classic white pumps are just as easy to pull off as the boring black ones, but feel a lot more current.

3. Mirrored Shades

Another trend I spotted during NYFW was mirrored shades. In vibrant shades of blue, orange, yellow, pink, [insert colour here], mirrored shades come in every colour imaginable, and look cool and refreshing. I love classic Wayfarers as much as any other person out there, but this spring I will be mixing it up with a fun pair of blue mirrored shades.

4. Colourful Bags

While I may not be able to afford a Chanel bag in every colour of the rainbow, this spring I am planning to pick up a colourful clutch or two to inject some much-needed excitement into my wardrobe. If your budget allows it, Chanel spring 2013 bags are exceptional! Lego-inspired whimsical clutches and colour-blocked quilted flap bags; this is what dreams are made of!

5. Statement Outerwear

Whether you are a leather-jacket girl or a peacoat lady, this spring is all about statement outerwear! Red leather jackets, fuchsia muppet-hair coats, metallic blue trench coats – pick a fun topper, and wear it with confidence.

Whether you are into graphic prints or love a little pop of colour in your accessories, spring trends are only a guideline, not a rule. Start small, with a fun yellow phone or perhaps with a funky blue clutch, and make each look your own.

What are your favourite spring 2013 trends? Share in the comments.

Finally, a phone as colourful as you are. The new Nokia Lumia 920, available exclusively at Rogers. Express yourself with your choice of four vibrant colours – yellow, red, black and white. Visit rogers.com/nokiacolours for details.

NYFW Fall 2013: Street Style Looks Part 2

19 February, 2013 Nelia

nyfw-fall-2013-day-2-street-style-5

Watching New York Fashion Week attendees battle the elements this February was interesting…to say the least. Piles of snow, layers of icy slush, and frigid winds didn’t stop the stylish crowds from bringing it. And while I kinda gave up on fashun after a particularly cold day at the tents, these awesome street stylers certainly didn’t. From stunning outerwear, to  creative layering, to eye-popping accessories, great looks were on display all over the place, and I was right there to capture it all for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy, and let me know which outfits you like best!

What I Wore: Streetstyling

29 October, 2012 Nelia

street-style-nelia-belkova-max-kopanygin

Fashion week is over, and after days of running around, not having time to eat or sleep in order to take in as much fashion as I possibly could, I can now relax and look back at all the fun I had. One of my fondest memories of last week was meeting Maxim Kopanygin, Flare Magazine’s street style photographer extraordinaire and as it turned out, a friend’s brother. Small world!

Even after hours in the rainy cold, outside of the tents, Max had the most positive energy…and his photos are amazing too! Pretty sure he has a huge future in fashion ahead of him.

Speaking of the photos, both of these outfits feature pieces I picked up during my last visit to Vaughan Mills mall – the gorgeous Maryam Keyhani necklace and green Prada clutch from Holts Last Call. Both purchased on major sale, and both special pieces I will treasure for years to come, and  which made my fashion week dressing that much easier! Now that’s what I call a good buy.

London 2012 Olympics: Models, and Spice Girls, and Erdem, Oh My!

12 August, 2012 Nelia

london-olympics-closing-ceremonies-supermodels

Did you watch the London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremonies? So much amazingness all at once. So many fantastic British performers! Loved seeing tributes to Freddie Mercury and David Bowie…loved Beady Eye…and of course, SPICE GIRLS!!! Zigazigah forever!

But the one thing that I was not expecting, was a tribute to the British fashion industry, as showcased by iconic Brit models Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Lily Donaldson, Stella Tennant, Karen Elson, Lily Cole, Georgia May Jagger, Jourdan Dunn, and David Gandy. Both Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell shined in Alexander McQueen, while Lily Donaldson wore Vivienne Westwood, Stella Tennant – Christoper Kane, Karen Elson – Burberry, and Lily Cole looked incredible in Erdem…who’s technically a Canadian, but whatever.

Did you watch the closing ceremonies? What was your favorite part? Share in the comments!

Wishlist: Birthday Girl

4 June, 2010 Nelia

It’s my birthday next week! Hooray for cake, not-so-hooray for the aging part…

Above is my birthday wish list, in case you want to send me a little something-something. I do love birthday gifts, I won’t lie. And as any shopaholic, the few latest items I’ve been coveting are slightly outrageous…well, not horrendously outrageous, but definitely things that I would not buy myself (oh, and also tough to find, since some of them are a few seasons old). And though there’s obviously no Birthday Santa out there (is there???), it doesn’t hurt to throw it out in the universe and see who hears me, right?

I would also love to hear about your birthday wish-lists! Is there anything that you would really love to get on your birthday, that you would not buy for yourself? Let me know in the comments!

Wishlist: Burberry Shearling Boots

3 March, 2010 Nelia

Aren’t these Fall 2010 Burberry shearling boots just amazing? Here I am happy as as can be that it’s almost spring, and then I lay my eyes on these awesome boots, and it makes me wish it was winter all over again…but then again, I think about the slush that would ruin these beauties, and I change my mind. And then the whole thing all over again…Oy!

The good thing about all this, is that I have an entire year to look for a proper replacement – perhaps with a more practical heel. Any leads?

Style Fille: Nicole Richie…again

26 February, 2010 Nelia

Ok, so I should probably ease up with Nicole Richie here, but I really do love the things she tends to wear, both in her daily life and in photo shoots. Like in this one. Adore her Burberry styling…and most of all, love the location of her shoot – my favorite-est place in Paris – Pont Alexandre III. Nicole, Paris and Burberry…all so very lovely.
