What They Wore: Vogue x Holt Renfrew Pop Up Shop

8 October, 2018 Nelia

Last week, Holt Renfrew hosted a chic soiree in Toronto to celebrate the new Vogue x Holt Renfrew Pop Up shop. Vogue’s West Coast Director Lisa Love and actress Kate Bosworth were in attendance to support the collab, and spent their time mingling with the stylish attendees and doing a little shopping too. As someone who used to love watching The Hills, meeting Lisa Love was a bit surreal, but she was perfectly lovely and warm in person. The pop up was curated by Vogue Fashion Director Virginia Smith and former Vogue Accessories Director Selby Drummond, focusing on three fall trends: Global, Bright, and Timeless, which resulted in a tightly-edited dream wardrobe, full of rich colours, eclectic patterns, and lush textures.

You can browse the pop up at Holt Renfrew Bloor Street, Calgary, and Vancouver, as well as online until October 28th. Happy Shopping!

What They Wore: Grey Goose Sunset Soiree Picnic

1 August, 2017 Nelia

I love picnics! I would picnic all the time in the summer, but I am way too lazy to put together a basket of provisions, blankets, utensils, drinks, and a million other things you need for an outdoorsy meal. Well, earlier this summer Grey Goose made my most exquisite picnic dreams come true and more!

The brand’s annual summer party was held at a Bridle Path mansion, its backyard set up with chic blue blankets and picnic baskets stuffed with a delicious meal prepared by Chef Justin Kent, along with an iced bucket of Grey Goose Rouge au Vin cocktail at the ready. With three lovely blanketmates, I enjoyed every moment of our picnic, sipping those refreshing cocktails, and devouring the incredible Poulet au Moutard, and other French-inspired nibbles.

After dinner, the guests spread around the grounds to enjoy the rest of the fun activations like a game of petanque, live music, a dove/goose balloon release, and Grey Goose Esspresso Martinis. There was even an artist on hand to sketch everyone’s stylish outfits! As afternoon stretched into late evening, the backyard was still abuzz with excitement – people dancing, mingling, and enjoying the free-flowing Grey Goose cocktails. And if that’s not a sign of a great summer party, then I don’t know what is.

If you’re planning on hosting your own al fresco soiree this summer, I highly recommend the Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz cocktail collection – these delicious concoctions will impress even the pickiest guest, and require only a few ingredients to whip up. I am also including Chef Kent’s recipe for Poulet au Moutard, because it was just too good not to recreate.

Happy picnicking!

What They Wore: YSL Beauty Club

25 May, 2017 Nelia

Earlier this month, YSL Beauty threw a spectacular bash in celebration of the iconic Touche Eclat’s 25th anniversary. The party was crazy fun and had everything: beauty claw machine, glitter tub photobooth, product engraving, makeup touch-ups, food and drinks, and a special performance by Coeur de Pirate. I go to a lot of parties as part of my job, but this one was particularly fun.

It seemed that most of Toronto’s fashion industry showed up to #YSLBeautyClub too, wearing their best “rock chic” looks – lots of moto jackets and so much black! I went with a printed “oldie but goodie” Hayley Elsaesser frock, with a fave Acne leather jacket on top, of course. Check out the rest of the looks in the gallery after the jump!

TIFF 2016: TIFF Soirée with Michael Fassbender

10 September, 2016 Nelia

600035256
After weeks of anticipation, it finally happened – TIFF Soirée with guest of honour Michael Fassbender. Fundraising for year-round initiatives like Pocket Fund, Special Delivery, and Reel Comfort, the gala kicked off with a fascinating on-stage conversation between TIFF Artistic Director, Cameron Bailey, and the love of my life Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender.

Looking dapper (and a little jet-lagged) in his blue Gucci suit, Fassbender was generous with his answers, and delved deep into the things that make him tick. One quote that seems to have gotten the most attention was the one about Michael’s performance as Magneto in X-Men. Despite the numerous reports claiming that he was embarrassed by his portrayal of Magneto, it sounded like he was only referring to the scene shown during the conversation, and as Fassbender described it was “just like some dude shouting”.

600032018
I wish I’d recorded the entire conversation, but I didn’t want to disturb my seatmates with the bright light of my phone, so here’s what I remember about the rest of the on-stage conversation.

  • Liam Cunningham moved in with Michael Fassbender for a couple of weeks to prepare for the infamous 23-minute and 27-page long one-take scene in Hunger, where Fassbender has a lengthy dialogue with Liam Cunningham’s character. “We got up every morning, cooked porridge, and we started rehearsing,” says Fassbender. “We did it every day for 11 days and had people bring lunch to us. The goal was to do it ten to 15 times a day and then Steve would come in in the evening and watch us, give us some notes, next day same thing.” Obviously, Magneto and Ser Davos were great roomies, since they only had to do 4 takes during filming.
  • In real life, Magneto’s superpower is power-napping. “I’m a great power napper. Having been a mutant with superhero powers, that is my real superhero power. I could do it now. I could just lie down on the stage, if it goes that way. There is the downside to it, when I get tired, I have to sleep. I can’t keep awake.”
  • When talking about his physicality in acting, we learned that shoes (or lack thereof) is one of the most important parts of Fassbender’s wardrobe, as choice of footwear grounds him “from the feet up”.
  • When asked about which film was the most personal to him, Hunger was his answer, “because I was hungry…to act, and quite literally”.
  • In a moment of self-deprecation, Fassbender admitted that he didn’t make a great first impression on Director Steve McQueen. “I think he said I was arrogant? I guess maybe I was a little defensive. I hadn’t been working a lot, and I don’t know how I came across in the room. I thought I came across well, but that just goes to show how much I know.”
  • If you were wondering about what turns him on, it seems that watching his movies for the first time with a live audience does the trick. “I get off on it a little bit. It’s nice when the sort of nerves and excitement are at maximum and you get to experience it with a very passionate audience and they’re usually very honest as well, so you get the full effect, as it were.”
  • A self-described “slow-learner”, Fassbender went into a bit of a panic when he received the “mountainous” script for Steve Jobs. “In rehearsals I was trying to find a way to get out of the job,” he said. “I remember telling my driver, ‘If I put my arm in the door, you should slam it. It should cause a break and it should get me out of this gig.'” Luckily, Michael kept his limbs clear of car doors, and ended up with an Oscar nomination as a result. Not bad for a slow-learner!
  • After being asked about working with Director Quentin Tarantino, Fassbender revealed that when he was 18, he directed and starred as Mr. Pink in a stage version of Reservoir Dogs. As such, being directed by Tarantino in Inglorious Basterds was “pretty special”.

attends the TIFF Soiree during the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival at TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 7, 2016 in Toronto, Canada.

After the interview, we headed upstairs to Malaparte for the cocktail party, where to my surprise, Fassbender was making the rounds, chatting with people and taking photos. I felt a little bad about stalking him around the room, but not bad enough to stop – I was too excited.

Michael looked great in person, with warm eyes and smile, and had a welcoming energy about him. He laughed often and when it was finally my turn to have a brief conversation with the man of the hour, I am embarrassed to say that I froze up a bit, and could only mumble something about my love of his acting and my appreciation of his performance in Fish Tank. Looking back, I wish I’d asked one of the many questions that were swirling in my head, but hopefully next time. After our brief chat, my friend Anita and I were lucky enough to actually get a photo with Fassy thanks to Nick from Best of Toronto. Giddy like schoolgirls, we let his handler lead him away to the next group of admirers, while we stood around, unable to believe our luck.

And while TIFF has only just begun, without a doubt in my mind, the TIFF Soirée was the best part of the festival for me – even if it happened before the official Day 1. Stay tuned for more TIFF coverage as the festival continues.

What They Wore: H&M Eaton Centre Re-Opening Party

26 February, 2016 Nelia

It’s no secret that I have a special kind of love for H&M. You can usually find me stalking this or that item at one of their stores at least twice a week. It’s an addiction, and probably a problem, but I like it that way…really. Well, after what felt like a million years, H&M Eaton Centre has finally revealed its spectacular renovation, with bright decor, stunning lighting fixtures, and lots and lots more square footage. The flagship location now boasts 57,000 square feet, and carries H&M Home, H&M Beauty, along with all the usual suspects. It’s now one of the largest H&M stores in the world, and it’s right here in Toronto! So to celebrate this major achievement, Team H&M threw a huge party organized by the inimitable Candice & Alison, with celeb performances by Taryn Manning and Alessia Cara, Sam and Cailli Beckerman on the red carpet, Jay Strut DJing, and a ton of stylish guests toasting the newly re-opened store.

Of course, the first thing I did as we entered the store was run over to the H&M Studio section and grab a few coveted pieces, followed by a trip down the escalator to check out the new H&M Home section. It may have been the excitement, but the home section looked larger than the ones I saw in New York, while the selection was essentially the same – a wide assortment of cushion covers, cute bedding and towels, adorable knick-knacks, and lots more. One more reason to keep my weekly appointments at H&M. Now that Toronto has every single H&M category available, the next logical step is ONLINE SHOPPING! US has had an e-commerce site for nearly three years now, here’s hoping for a Canadian one soon. Fingers crossed!

Hermès Masculine Spirit Party in Toronto

15 October, 2014 Nelia

hermes-masculine-spirit-toronto-23.jpg

As I learned a couple of years ago, the folks at Hermès sure do know how to throw a party. Last week, despite the torrential downpour, over 600 stylish Torontonians showed up to the brand’s Masculine Spirit party at the Distillery District to celebrate Hermès Men’s Universe Autumn/Winter 2014. Guests were invited to view a leather jacket retrospective, walk through a Leandro Erlich-designed mazelike fitting room installation, watch a curious performance by two twins, check out the exquisite pieces from the new collection, and pose for a photo gif booth.

We feasted on delicious nibbles and cocktails, admired the very attractive male models circling the room, and simply had a blast…as one does at an Hermès bash. And while there were no unicorn tattoos this time around, the amount of fun we had planning our poses for the gif booth more than made up for it. How do you spell fun? H-E-R-M-E-S!

CHANEL Boutique Opens at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto!

3 December, 2013 Nelia

131127-Chanel-415e

I may or may not have let out a loud squeal when a certain CHANEL invitation appeared on my doorstep – my name boldly calligraphed on the envelope. There was no mistaking it – I was being summoned to the opening of the new CHANEL boutique at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. After doing the happy dance, then panicking about not knowing what to wear, then pulling out my favourite pair of CHANEL glass slippers heels, this Cinderella was ready to party at the poshest boutique in town.

Of course, when it comes to parties, CHANEL knows how to throw a damn good one. Packed to the brim with uber-stylish attendees, the new 3000-square foot boutique was overflowing with energetic vibes…or was it the kinetic energy of too many credit cards being swiped along with the most incredible bags and accessories flying off the shelves? No matter, along with my blogging buds Anita, Gracie, and Jay, I perused the boutique’s extensive selection of brooches (super versatile!), drooled over stunning footwear, and played with CHANEL coin purses, in hopes of snagging one for Christmas. We sat on purple tweed couches, piled into the gigantic CHANEL fitting room for a photo session with the Beckerman girls, and drooled some more. It was a blast.

Designed by Peter Marino, the boutique space itself was, as expected, stunning. Inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s legendary Paris apartment on rue Cambon, with artful window displays, and oodles of merchandise lining the glossy shelves, I never wanted to leave. Speaking of merchandise…on opening night, the CHANEL boutique at Yorkdale had a huge selection of (almost) everything available. Now that it’s been a few days since opening, I am not sure if it’s still the case, but it’s certainly worth a visit if you are looking for variety…and it’s certainly worth a visit if you’re simply a fan of the brand. You won’t be disappointed – that is a promise!

Nicholas Kirkwood and Sophia Webster Party at The Bay in Toronto!

22 October, 2013 Nelia

nicholas-kirkwood-sophia-webster-the-room-2013-24

The Bay is clearly ON FIRE this month! After hosting the lovely designer Sam Edelman two weeks ago, the magnificent department store welcomed not one, but two uber-talented British shoe designers at Toronto’s newly renovated “largest in Canada” shoe floor – Nicholas Kirkwood and Sophia Webster.

Having met Kirkwood a couple of years ago at the same location, I felt pretty lucky to get another chance to chat with this young and inspiring designer. He was just as approachable and easy to talk to as he was back in 2010, and as you can tell from that pic above, we are now BFFs for life! True story*. I also got to meet Sophia Webster, who used to be Kirkwood’s design assistant, and who has obviously learned a lot from her mentor – her shoes, just like his, are truly drool-worthy and must find their way to my wardrobe one of these days…soon.

Like most parties at The Room, this one was THE place to be if you’re into people-watching, what with stunning clothes, beautiful shoes, and notable attendees like Bonnie Brooks (in a pair of Kirkwood zig-zag shoes), Greta Constantine designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong, Suzanne Rogers, Stacey Kimel, and Kim Tanenbaum, mingling with the guests of honor, who were both swarmed by an army of adoring fans for the majority of the night.

I know I’ve said this before, but if you still haven’t been to the gleaming new shoe floor at The Bay (Queen St and Yorkdale), then you are truly missing out. Even without designers in attendance, the shoe department is a sight to behold…and a place to find the most amazing shoes. My BFF Nicholas Kirkwood totally loved it and so will you.

*Not a true story
