Golden Globes 2017: Best Dressed

8 January, 2017 Nelia

“I decided early in the year not to wear any dresses to awards shows to be a gentle reminder to young girls and women that you’re not required one if you don’t want to, to really be yourself and that your worth is more than the dresses that you wear.” – Evan Rachel Wood

Not only did Evan Rachel Wood looked amazing at the Golden Globes, but she had a very positive message to share about her choice of outfit. What’s not to love? This year’s Golden Globes red carpet was actually pretty good – not too many boring outfits, a few that I didn’t love, but could appreciate, and these ten looks that I actually really enjoyed. Some more than others, like Emma Stone’s stunning Valentino gown – so appropriate for her La La Land role, almost too on the nose, but too beautiful to criticise.

Isabelle Huppert looked radiant in her powder blue gown; and she rocked that ear cuff too! Ruth Negga’s Louis Vuitton dress was futuristic perfection (and that hair!). Natalie Portman’s Jackie-inspired Prada look was very fitting and both interesting and flattering. And of course, Evan’s impeccably-cut suit was one of the highlights of this red carpet for me.

There were a few others in memorable gowns, like the beautiful see-through lace on Kerry Washington (Dolce and Gabbana) and Kristen Wiig, Claire Foy in a lovely sequined pink dress, and Kristen Bell (whom I love in The Good Place) in a sexy black gown with a plunging neckline. They all looked incredible, interesting, and stylish. As a bonus, I’ve added a photo of Millie Bobby Brown looking super cute at her first major awards show…because Stranger Things should’ve won something and Millie is adorable.

So there you have it, my top 10 Best Dressed from the 74th Golden Globes. Share your picks in the comments!

Style Fille: Elizabeth Olsen in KENZO x H&M

27 October, 2016 Nelia

Elizabeth Olsen
First things first…H&M CANADA ONLINE SHOPPING HAS FINALLY LAUNCHED!!! And if you sign up to be on the brand’s mailing list, you will receive 20% off your purchase and free shipping until Oct 30th! What this means for those who are looking to shop the KENZO x H&M collection? Well, you just got an alternative to lining up in the middle of the night. But don’t rely on online shopping as your only way of getting those coveted pieces – sites are known to crash due to high demand.

Now that I got that off my chest (seriously, I’ve been waiting for H&M online shop for AGES!), we can look at Elizabeth Olsen’s amazing KENZO x H&M getup. These two pajama-inspired pieces are at the top of my list, and I love how she styled them with a pair of velvet heels. So perfect. For those who have yet to embrace pajamas as daywear, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. It’s comfy and chic, and I am all about it. Obviously, Lupita Nyong’o also looks super gorgeous in that amazing printed dress, but in this instance, my eyes are permanently glued to Elizabeth Olsen’s outfit.

Are you excited about H&M Canada online shopping being available??? Do you love the pajama trend? Share in the comments!

If you’ve been looking for a perfect pair of black overalls – ones that won’t make you look like a plumber – your search is over, because this pair from Gap is amazing (and currently on sale!). Stretchy, with a slight kick flare, and a perfect length to show off your favourite boots – these overalls have it all, and I’m so glad I found them.

What do you think of the overalls trend? Would you wear them? Share in the comments.

Wishlist: CHANEL Spring 2017 Collection

6 October, 2016 Nelia

chanel-spring-2017-rtw-collection2
As a huge fan of CHANEL and all things colourful, I really loved Data Center CHANEL Spring 2017 collection. With vibrant tweeds and prints aplenty, this collection made me wish we could skip winter and just get to spring again. But alas, at least we have something beautiful to look forward to.

CHANEL Spring 2017 collection was inspired by technology and all things digital. Models dressed as robots walked the wired-up runway, wearing clothes in a variety of electric prints like colour bursts and pixels. Some handbags had embedded LED displays with animated customized messages, while the signature minaudiere from the Spring 2017 collection was shaped as the cutest robot ever – these bags will surely become collectors’ items as soon as they arrive at boutiques (and sell out immediately).

And while I won’t be wearing a sideways cap any time soon, I am more than happy to embrace the underwear as outerwear trend that CHANEL and Karl Lagerfeld seem to be on board with for spring. Lace slips and silk PJ bottoms – garments that are usually relegated to the bedroom, or worn discreetly under our clothes – were on full display, and I’m totally into it. It seems that I’ll be getting lots more wear from my camisole dresses after all.

What did you think of the CHANEL Spring 2017 collection? Share in the comments.

Shopping: Fall 2016 Trends

16 September, 2016 Nelia

fall-2016-2017-fashion-trends
There’s no denying it, the days are getting shorter, the nights are feeling cooler, and fall is almost here. And while some may wish to remain in denial, the rest of us are more than excited to finally layer up, dust off our leather jackets, and stash those short-shorts away. This fall, I find myself drawn to a lot of similar trends that I loved last season, with a few added for good measure (and to freshen things up).

From fab knits to soft velvet – here are my top 5 trends to try this fall season.

Cool Knits
Fun patterns, edgy cuts, cozy fabrics – you can never have too many knits.
[show_shopthepost_widget id=”1939500″]

Block-heel Boots
Comfortable and chic, what’s not to love?
[show_shopthepost_widget id=”1939543″]

Romantic Details
Pair this look with leather and denim to avoid looking too Victorian.
[show_shopthepost_widget id=”1939552″]

Statement Jackets
Shearling-lined, with faux fur, embroidered – this season’s go-to jacket is anything but boring.
[show_shopthepost_widget id=”1939472″]

Velvet
Invest in a classic velvet piece that you can wear time and time again, year after year.

CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2016 Collection

5 July, 2016 Nelia

chanel-haute-couture-fall-2016-9
Couture season is upon us and, of course, this site would never miss a chance to feature some CHANEL Haute Couture amazingness. Skipping the usual frills, CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2016 collection was presented in a pared down setting made up to look like an actual atelier, with petites mains working away in the background. Karl Lagerfeld wanted to pay tribute to the people behind the magical couture creations by dedicating this show and collection to them.

While couture is certainly not the biggest influencer of mainstream trends, this collection seemed to proclaim the return of the strong shoulder. From boxy tweed suits to exquisite evening gowns, strong shoulders dominated CHANEL Haute Couture Fall 2016. Perhaps because of all the off-the-shoulder looks as of late, seeing more structure felt fresh and exciting.

I probably don’t have to mention how exquisite the gowns are – all you need to do is look at the detail shots. Evening silhouette was inspired by the work of English illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. Using a variety of fabrics and embellisments like radzimir, ziberline, mikado, taffeta, faille, chiffon, crêpe georgette, organza, silk tulle, embroidered laces, almost transparent grosgrains, stones, matt sequins, beads and feathers, Karl Lagerfeld has once again presented art on the runway. Many of the looks placed a lot of emphasis on the back of the garment as well as the front – this way you turn heads coming and going…that is if you can afford CHANEL couture, of course.

Willow Smith (aka coolest 15 year old) sat front row with her famous father Will Smith, and I couldn’t help but think of her when I saw the sequinned top and culotte combo from the collection. I won’t be surprised if I see her wearing this look on the red carpet in the near future.

What I Wore: Similar, But Different

29 June, 2016 Nelia

You may have noticed that I’ve been wearing a lot of white dresses lately…which means I’m either in a rut or I’m obsessed with LWDs this summer. Let’s go with the latter. In my defense, all three dresses I recently wore are very different – the first one is worn off-the-shoulder and has long sleeves, the second is a breezy t-shirt dress with lace, while this one is a cami-style maxi. Similar, but different.

I guess, since the weather has been so beautiful lately, a crisp white dress feels appropriate and almost necessary. I wear these dresses with cute sandals for dressier occasions, with white sneakers (I’m partial to Stan Smiths) for casual strolls, and with ankle booties if the other two shoe styles feel a bit “been there”. Regardless of what I pair it with, LWD is the easiest garment to wear in the summer (perfect for lazy people who want to look put-together). So if I’m wearing yet another LWD in the next outfit post, just assume that it’s my summer uniform…I’ll try to keep it exciting with accessories.

So tell me, do you have something that you keep buying over and over again…similar, but different? Share in the comments.

Wishlist: Charlotte Olympia Feline Bucket Bag

23 June, 2016 Nelia

Every time I decide that I have enough (read: way too many) feline-inspired fashion items in my wardrobe, I inevitably see another one that makes my kitty-loving heart skip a beat and I’m back at square one. I blame years of cat-fashion deprivation – long before cats were en vogue, seeing feline fashions was a rarity, so now that they are so popular, I am tempted to buy them all, like a crazy cat lady hoarder that I am.

This week, my heart is set on this adorable Charlotte Olympia Feline Bucket Bag (USD $1,095/CAD $1,490), kitty ears and all. It can be worn over the shoulder or across body, comes in a variety of colours and leather finishes, and I really (really) want one. Unlike other Charlotte Olympia kitty bags, this one actually looks pretty roomy – large enough for your wallet and other essentials, and it’s understated enough not to look too cartoonish with your more sophisticated outfits. Oh, and there’s a backpack version as well, if that’s more your style.

So tell me, am I going full catlady here, or do you think these Charlotte Olympia cat bags are cute af? Let me know in the comments.

NYFW: KAELEN Fall 2016 Collection

23 February, 2016 Nelia

kaelen-fall-2016-collection15
I’ve been smitten with KAELEN’s designs for a while now, so when I heard that this Canadian-born, New York-based designer was presenting during NYFW, I jumped at the chance to see her Fall 2016 collection in person, and I am so glad that I did! Sticking to her elegant minimalist aesthetic, the fall collection consisted of the classic modern woman essentials like trench coat, shirt dress, work trousers, and pencil skirt, but executed in eye-catching patterns, with unexpected details like button-down slits, pleated bell sleeves, and exaggerated bows. Styling showed versatility of the collection, with mixed prints, dresses worn over pants, and a shiny evening gown layered over a turtleneck. And though I had a serious crush on more than half of the collection, the shirt dress with pleated bell sleeves was definitely a favourite. The pleats looked beautiful in motion, and the floral trim was such a lovely touch. Honestly, I just hope that the Canadian dollar is not so crappy by the time this collection is available for purchase. Because I want so many pieces!

NYFW: Banana Republic Fall 2016 Collection

22 February, 2016 Nelia

banana-republic-fall-winter-2016-collection
While runway shows of the high-fashion brands are certainly fun to watch, I love attending fashion week presentations of brands I can actually afford. Last week, I got to stop by and check out the Banana Republic Fall 2016 presentation, and it was awesome! Not only was it full of chic office separates and weekend staples, but the styling gave me a ton of ideas for putting together my own outfits.

My favourite pieces included the white shearling peacoat (that I’ll be stalking next fall because it’s perfect), the floral maxi dress (both fun and versatile), adorable scalloped hem pencil skirt, classic velvet ankle booties, and that amazing red pant-suit. And the best part is that I will be able to afford these pieces when they hit the stores! What are your favourite pieces from this collection? Share in the comments!
