What They Wore: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding

19 May, 2018 Nelia

It’s Royal Wedding Saturday, and unless you live under a rock, you must have seen photos of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry marrying in Windsor today. Though many were betting on Stella McCartney to be the wedding dress designer, Meghan wore an elegant dress designed by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy paired with the Order of Splendor tiara, on loan from the Queen, as well as a pair of understated Cartier diamond earrings. She looked lovely, Harry looked emotional, and they both looked so in love! Congrats, you crazy kids!

Now on to the guests…my personal best dressed was Amal Clooney in a stunning yellow Stella McCartney dress and that chic matching veiled hat. Hands down my fave look from the wedding. Princess Diana’s niece Kitty Spencer looked stunning in a veiled green fascinator, floral dress, and a velvet clutch. Meghan’s close friend, Canadian Jessica Mulroney looked lovely in royal blue, and was repping Canada in a pair of Birks earrings. Carey Mulligan wore a beautiful floral frock, but wore a barely visible fascinator…not sure if that’s a faux pas when it comes to Royal Weddings, but I loved her look nonetheless. I was a little disappointed by Victoria Beckham’s gloomy look…I think she looks great in colour and it would’ve been great to see her in something more cheerful.

What did you think of the Royal Wedding fashion? Who were your favourites? Share in the comments!

You Are Invited: Power Ball XX – Carousal

10 May, 2018 Nelia

Now that we’ve covered the amazingness that was the Met Gala, let’s talk about a party we can all attend without needing to shell out $30,000 per ticket (!!!), one of Toronto’s most fun/fab/artsy fundraisers – Power Ball! Power Ball, presented by Max Mara is truly a not-to-be-missed fundraiser, with interactive art, an abundance of delicious food, and some great outfit-watching. Over the years I’ve seen some outrageously well-dressed attendees at Power Ball, with the best-dressed usually embracing the year’s theme with enthusiasm and creativity. Here’s hoping this year is no exception.

Carousal
noun. 1. a noisy or drunken feast or social gathering; revelry.

The theme of Power Ball XX is Carousal, which I find to be pretty open to interpretation. The official description and the poster seem to lean into the direction of Carnival/Circus, with the image showing a mermaid, belly dancers, magicians, and acrobats, but there’s always the “arousal” part of “carousal” if you wanted to take that direction instead. Here’s the official description:

“Come celebrate Power Ball’s twenty-year standing as the art world’s unofficial adult funland Thursday, 31 May 2018 and join us under the big top of The Power Plant for a carnivalesque mashup of art, edibles, waggishness and tomfoolery.
Revel in Power Ball’s decades’ old tradition of naughtiness, titillating discoveries and mischievous provocation as the gallery is transformed into a transitory space of circusry fit for the party’s big, bacchanalian birthday bash—all in support of the ambitious exhibitions and programming at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery.”

I still haven’t made up my mind on what exactly I’m going to wear…perhaps some Circus-inspired black and white stripes, or a nude slip dress with a ton of jewellery, or maybe something red and overtly sexy. There’s still time to decide, so I am not in panic mode just yet. I also put together a few of my fave dresses (after the jump) that could fit this year’s theme, in case you too need a bit of inspo. And in case you were curious, here’s what I wore last year to Power Ball XIX – Stereo Vision, and a couple more outfits I wore in the years before that.

Have you ever attended Power Ball? What are you going to wear? Share in the comments and see you at The Power Plant!

WHEN: May 31, 2018, 9pm-late
WHERE: The Power Plant, 231 Queens Quay West, Toronto

What They Wore: Met Gala 2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

7 May, 2018 Nelia

I usually get so frustrated looking at high-profile celebs on the Met Gala red carpet…the ones that end up in boring pretty dresses instead of embracing the drama of the year’s theme. Well, luckily, this year, lots of the attendees actually embraced the Costume portion of the Costume Institute Gala, and I am here for it! My fave look of the night would have to be a tie between Solange in Iris Van Herpen and Zendaya in Versace, channeling Joan of Arc…they both killed it, while looking both on-theme and for the lack of a better word…heavenly at the same time. Other looks I loved were Cardi B in Moschino, Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra, Frances McDormand in Valentino, Madonna in Jean Paul Gaultier, Chadwick Boseman in Versace, SJP in Dolce and Gabbana, Greta Gerwig, and yes, Katy Perry with those crazy wings. Pope Riri wasn’t my fave look, but I appreciate the commitment and the intricacy of her look.

Once again, I found myself disappointed in the models…Giselle in some sexy boring dress, Kate Moss in a snoozeville LBD, Doutzen Kroes in a lavender atrocity, Ashley Graham in a forgettable sequin gown, and Lily Aldridge in wrinkly taffeta that was a few feet of fabric away from office attire. These stunning women, with actually heavenly bodies could have worn some truly interesting designs, but chose those looks…just baffling. Speaking of baffling, what was with Scarlett Johansson’s terrible matronly gown and Bieber hair? I blame her sentient saltine cracker boyfriend “Dry Toast Jost”. I know, I know…many of you love him, but I just can’t get behind this. She’s ScarJo! She can have anyone!!! She can have any dress! And yet…here we are.

What did you think of this year’s Met Gala red carpet? Share your faves in the comments.

CHANEL Resort 2019 – La Pausa

6 May, 2018 Nelia

chanel-la-pausa-t-shirt-2019
The only way you could get me on a cruise ship ever is if the vessel was in fact a CHANEL La Pausa faux ship set in the middle of Grand Palais as a setting of the Resort 2019 fashion show. As always, mining the history of the iconic fashion house for inspiration, this year’s setting was partially inspired by La Pausa – Coco Chanel’s summer house in the South of France along with the fact that Coco was one of the first designers to create vacation clothes aka resortwear as far back as 1919. And while most of us don’t live in a world where we buy an entire new designer wardrobe for our vacations, resort collections usually tend to be my favourites…transporting me to far away locales, and helping me plan my own vacation outfits. This collection was no exception.

Consisting of a chic variety of easy-breezy dresses, striped pants and skirts, and CC-branded tees and sweaters, the CHANEL Resort 2019 collection is a jet-setter’s dream wardrobe and more. With logomania trend still going strong, I have a feeling that those tees and sweaters will go fast…just like the ones from the Cuba collection. Personally, I fell in love with a few double-breasted tweed jackets from this collection. I’ve been patiently waiting for “the one” CHANEL jacket, and I think a few from this collection fit the bill. Fingers crossed!

What did you think about CHANEL Resort 2019? Which pieces caught your eye? Share in the comments.

Shopping: Shopbop Spring 2018 Sale

10 April, 2018 Nelia

While it’s still cold and miserable outside, I’m here dreaming of summer and I truly hope that it looks and feels like that amazing La Bomba video by Jacquemus. Even if it’s just a fraction as fab, I’ll be a happy girl. And the first step to recreating the essence of La Bomba is to invest in a few chic dresses and jumpsuits I can strut around in this summer. Luckily, Shopbop is having a major sale on their key styles, and they carry Jacquemus too! From April 10th until April 14th, you can get 25% off orders over $500, and 20% off orders under $500 with code EVENT18 on items labeled Key Style.

There are so many trends to choose from this summer, from polka dots, to clean-cut linen, to retro prints, to dainty florals, and Shopbop has the perfect dress (or jumpsuit) with your name on it! Shop my faves after the jump and enjoy La Bomba!

H&M Conscious Exclusive Spring 2018 Collection

8 April, 2018 Nelia

I haven’t been this excited about an H&M collection for a while now, but this year’s H&M Conscious Exclusive Spring 2018 collection is magnificent! Inspired by the “creative home of 19th and early 20th-century Swedish artists Karin and Carl Larsson”, and created using sustainable materials like organic linen, organic cotton, organic silk, TENCEL, recycled polyester, recycled silver, and ECONYL (100% regenerated nylon fiber made from fishnets and other nylon waste), the collection is chock-full of really beautiful clothes and accessories.

And since I put myself on a bit of a shopping ban, I’ll have to be very choosy about the pieces I end up buying. Right now, I am really loving the green jacquard dress, the dark blue suit, and the beautiful flower ring. The printed metallic mini dress is also top of my list.

What do you think about H&M Conscious Exclusive Spring 2018 collection? Are you as excited as I am? Share your favourites in the comments!

Shopping: Holt Renfrew Contemporary Treehouse

19 March, 2018 Nelia

Spring can’t come soon enough, but for now, I am slowly but surely assembling my dream spring wardrobe, so that when the temperatures finally hit the double-digits, I’ll be ready! Plus, I am so sick of sweaters and coats, that shopping for dresses feels somehow therapeutic. The other day, I got to preview Holt Renfrew’s newly updated women’s contemporary floor at their Bloor St location, and it was everything I needed and more for spring. Inspired by the “architectural structure, warmth and magical escape of treehouses”, the floor has been transformed into a bright and inviting space, featuring visual elements such as chipboard finishes, ash veneer beams, and wooden vignettes…and stocked to the brim with a ton of cool new contemporary brands.

There’s an abundance of cool denim brands like RE/DONE (my fave!), Outland Denim, Grlfrnd, Mother Denim, and so much more. It’s the perfect one-stop-shop for those looking to invest in a new pair this season. As someone who lives in dresses in the summer, I was immediately drawn to racks upon racks of beautiful spring frocks. I tried on printed silk dresses from RIXO London, boho maxis from BA&SH, and the playful styles by Ganni..and I loved them all!

If you’re looking for a new bag this season, there are several uber-chic options from cool brands like Staud and Cult Gaia – accessories with a ton of style and reasonable price tags. I already wrote about this spring’s ethically-made H Project arrivals, which you can also find at Holt Renfrew’s Contemporary Treehouse.

If you haven’t visited the Bloor St location in a while, make sure to stop by soon – from the CHANEL Coco Game Center on the concourse level, to the Contemporary Treehouse on the top floor, there’s lots of exciting things to see and do at Holt Renfrew on Bloor St…and with the new Colette Grand Cafe coming soon, it’s about to get even better.

You Are Invited: CHANEL Coco Game Center at Holt Renfrew in Toronto

15 March, 2018 Nelia

coco-game-center-toronto-holt-renfrew
If you live in Toronto, I have great news for you! The new CHANEL Coco Game Center has arrived at Holt Renfrew Bloor Street and will be open until April 15th. This amazing CHANEL Beauty pop-up features actual arcade games you can play, while getting acquainted with the brand’s latest beauty launches like the new Rouge Coco Lip Blush ($37) – a versatile product that you can use on your lips and your cheeks for a pop of colour and hydration, and available in 6 covetable shades.

While at the Coco Game Center, you can play The Bubble Game for a chance to win Hydra Beauty skincare samples, express services, and one-of-a-kind gifts, take The Beauty Ride in the Coco Car, take a break at The CHANCE Lounge to discover the various facets of CHANCE fragrances (my personal fave is Eau Vive!), and of course, play Rouge Coco – The Game where you can win prizes and get a lippie touch-up while you’re at it.

Coco Game Center was inspired by the playful arcades of Japan, and so far, only Tokyo and Toronto get to experience everything Coco Game Center has to offer. How cool is that?! Along with the fun games and installations, you can get personalized consultations, touch-ups, and beauty recommendations from the CHANEL beauty experts, and of course everything in the beautiful pop-up is extremely photogenic and instagrammable.

Coco Game Center will be open until April 15th, so you have less than a month to enjoy this amazing CHANEL Beauty experience! Game on!

Wishlist: CHANEL Fall 2018 Collection

11 March, 2018 Nelia

If at first glance you thought that the CHANEL Fall 2018 presentation was shown outdoors in an autumnal forest, you wouldn’t be the only one. The realism of the faux forest is a testament to Karl Lagerfeld’s determination to transform the Grand Palais into the most fantastical settings season after season and I am here for it. Of course, the decor was dreamed up to complement the Fall 2018 collection, with its palette of reds and orange, moss and pine green, black and brown, as well as a handful of foliage-like prints, and details that included entwined branches forming CCs, leaves chiselled on intricate buttons, and even a wooden log minaudiere!

Speaking of accessories, a new bag, named 31, was introduced this season – a generously sized shopper shown in several colours and finishes, and by the looks of it pretty versatile to boot. Not sure if it’s going to become another classic, but I am definitely curious to check it out once it arrives in stores. CHANEL’s GABRIELLE bag made an appearance in a mini version, printed and in gold leather. I’ve yet to add one to my collection, but I am seriously crushing on this smaller version – super chic!

And while normally, I am all about prints and colours, this time around I found myself entranced by the more muted pieces…that is if you can call a floor-length iridescent velvet coat a muted piece. There were so many beautiful coats on the runway this season that I simply lost count, but the longer silhouettes felt both fresh and timeless at the same time. Take note for fall, and start saving those pennies.

So tell me, what did you think about the CHANEL Fall 2018 collection? Are you curious about the new 31 bag? Share in the comments.
