What I Wore: Photoshoot with Embryolisse

13 June, 2019 Nelia

When it comes to beauty products that work, French pharmacies is where it’s at. I’ve discovered most of my current skincare faves browsing the aisles of Parisian drug stores, with Google Translate in hand. It takes a while for these products to arrive in Canada, but eventually some of them do, making it a lot easier to stock up without having to pay for a plane ticket. Embryolisse is one of those brands. A French pharmacy staple, Embryolisse was created by a dermatologist back in 1950, with its first product – Lait-Crème Concentré. Since then, the brand has become a cult-favourite. Lucky for us, Embryolisse is now available in Canada, with a range of skincare products well-suited to sensitive skin. Embryolisse formulas include ingredients of natural origin (shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera, soy) combined with cutting-edge dermatological active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and collagen to offer products that are effective but also suitable for even the most sensitive skin (hello, it me!). The company pays a lot of attention to ingredient dosages, ensuring that each product contains just enough of each active ingredient as to be effective, but not so much that your skin won’t be able to absorb it.

Last week, I attended a fun Embryolisse event, which introduced us to brand’s new arrivals, and treated all attendees to a mini photoshoot with pro photographer Vincent Lions. Makeup artist Angie di Battista prepped my skin with Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré before doing my makeup, and hairstylist Ian Russel added some waves to my hair before I was ready to step in front of the camera. There were lots of great outfit options on offer from Emma Boutique, but I opted to wear my own clothes – a Comme des Garcons Play shirt I was wearing that day, and a Saint Laurent polka dot dress. The photos turned out great, non?

But back to the latest and greatest from Embryolisse. I already use a couple of Embryolisse products from the Artist Secret series – like the Radiant Eyes stick (perfect for tired eyes) and Lashes & Brows Booster (gotta be more diligent about applying this daily but still love it), but this time I was introduced to the brand’s Anti-Aging skincare line. The thing about sensitive skin is that a lot of skincare products with anti-aging ingredients tend to be too harsh, causing breakouts and irritation. What’s different about Embryolisse Anti-Aging line is that it doesn’t promise immediate results, but a slow build to better, more youthful skin, with lower chance of causing an adverse reaction. I was especially intrigued by the Gentle Night Peeling cream with caviar lemon extract, which promotes gentle cell renewal every night. My sensitive skin can’t tolerate most chemical peels, so I am really excited to try this one…and a cherry on top – it’s really affordable!

If you’d like to try Embryolisse, you can find their products at Shoppers Drug Mart online and in stores.

What I Wore: 1 – Dress – Saint Laurent (Holt Renfrew), Boots – Dolce Vita (Shopbop); 2 – Shirt – Comme des Garcons, Cuff – Hermes, Earrings – H&M

Beauty: First Canadian CHANEL Beauty Boutique Opens in Toronto

2 May, 2019 Nelia

Toronto just got a whole lot chicer with the arrival of the brand new CHANEL Beauty Boutique – the first standalone fragrance and beauty location in Canada! Located on the concourse level of 50 Bloor Street West, the stunning 1,280 square foot space features three makeup stations, a fragrance library, a specialty selection of eyewear, and a private treatment room inspired by the CHANEL au Ritz Spa in Paris!

The boutique will house current beauty and fragrance collections, as well as products that are unique to the Toronto location (intriguing, non?). The space will feature iPad applications where shoppers will be able to try on lipstick shades virtually, and to top it off, exclusive “Art of Wrapping” packaging will also be unveiled. I’ve been buried under a mountain of paperwork at work and haven’t had the chance to stop by the new boutique just yet, but I can’t wait to pay a visit this weekend. Who’s with me?

Operating and skincare treatment hours, and more photos after the jump!

Shopping: Holt Renfrew Unveils New Beauty Hall

25 March, 2019 Nelia

After months of renovations, Holt Renfrew has unveiled its gleaming new Beauty Hall on the concourse level of the Bloor Street flagship. The seemingly never-ending 12,000
square foot department was designed by Kramer Design Group with master architects, Gensler, and features 45 skincare, fragrance and colour brands, a dedicated clean beauty area, a master class event space, two Holt Renfrew skincare cabines, a fragrance library and lots more. Some of the brands available at the Holt Renfrew Beauty Hall include Aesop, La Prairie, Chantecaille, Sulwhasoo, Oribe, Susanne Kaufmann, Tata Harper, Byredo, and Jo Malone, among many others. A CHANEL Beauty Boutique will be opening within the Beauty Hall later this year as well.

Photos don’t do this space justice, you must see it for yourself. Whether you’re looking to refresh your skincare routine, learn about new beauty brands, or shopping for the perfect gift, the Holt Renfrew Beauty Hall has something for everyone, and it’s just the beginning for the 50 Bloor Street West store. By the end of the year, the main floor beauty and colour space renovation will also be completed, and by 2020, the remaining floors, including the new women’s leather goods and jewellery area, new vendor shops from Celine, Prada, Dior, Balenciaga and a gourmet dining experience in the new Colette Grand café will be updated and renovated. If the rest of the renovations are as impressive as the Beauty Hall, the flagship store is going to be a gem! Until then, make sure to stop by the new beauty space on the concourse level of the 50 Bloor Street West flagship store, and check out the awe-inspiring department for yourself.

Beauty: Murale Spring 2019 Preview

20 March, 2019 Nelia

Now that it’s officially spring, it’s time for a beauty routine refresh. Cold temps, windy snowboarding trips, and a quick but sunburny trip to the Dominican Republic left my skin feeling just a little stressed out. Luckily, I had a few goodies from the Murale Spring 2019 preview to give me a hand with repairing the damage. If you’re in need of a few new goodies to bring your glow back this spring, check out some of my faves from Murale (and Shoppers Drug Mart) below.

ORGANIC PHARMACY Skin Brush, $23
Not only does dry brushing boosts circulation and lymphatic system, but it also helps with avoiding ingrown hairs post-waxing, and is great for gentle exfoliation. I’ve been using mine religiously after my sunburn and not only did it feel great, it helped me get rid of the dreaded peeling in no time.

Available now in-store and on shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty

STRIVECTIN Blue Rescue™ Clay Renewal Mask $49
This multi-tasking clay mask uses nourishing oceanic extracts and balancing probiotics to reduce the look of fine lines, enlarged pores, rough texture and dullness in just ten minutes. The massage-activated formula goes from white to an ocean blue colour as it smooths, reduces redness and boosts radiance.

Available now in-store and on shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty

FILORGA NCEF-NIGHT MASK $95
Night masks are my fave…the active ingredients work hard overnight to make your skin look more rested and more youthful when you wake up…what’s not to love?! And this one from Filorga is top-notch. Peptides boost hyaluronic acid and collagen to smooth wrinkles and plump the skin, silk tree extract stimulates melatonin, a natural sleep regulator, for a well-rested appearance, and red indigo extract fights the negative effects of daily stress for a more radiant complexion.

Available March 2019 in-store and on shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty

PATCHOLOGY Resting Beach Face Soothing Sheet Mask + Lip Gel Kit, $20
This kit was a life-saver! I actually brought one soothing sheet mask with me on the plane, and it helped my dehydrated skin be less dehydrated. Soothe Sheet Mask: Created with the best ingredients from Mother Nature’s medicine cabinet, this masque is a five-minute remedy. Aloe Vera and Cotton Seed Extract are natural anti-inflammatories that help soothe and calm redness. Schisandra Berry de-stresses skin and improves moisture for a plump, youthful glow. Bursting with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, this blend of Rosemary, Sage, and Lavender helps repair irritated skin. Hydrating Lip Gel: Instantly moisturizes dry lips. Each five-minute biodegradable lip mask combines ingredients like Peptides to improve elasticity, Green Tea to soothe, and Niacinamide to prevent water loss.

Available April 2019 in-store and on shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty

TEAOLOGY White Tea Miracle Drops $49
If you already use a serum and a good moisturizer, but still suffer from dry skin, this product may just be the answer. It really does leave the skin feeling softer and more moisturized. The formula is an effective anti-aging concentrate, containing a precious White Tea infusion, full of powerful antioxidant polyphenols (Epigallocatechin EGCG), combined with a peptide complex that helps re-densify skin tissue. Stabilized Vitamin C enhances the complexion’s brightness and stimulates collagen production. When used every day, skin appears fresher, smoother and more radiant.

Available now in-store and on shoppersdrugmart.ca/beauty

JOWAE Hydrating Water Mist $19
This hydrating mist is inspired by Korean lotions and is used following make-up removal to add extra hydration  and refresh the skin with Sakura blossom hydrolat with antioxidant Lumiphenols in a fine and gentle mist.

Available now exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart

FOREO UFO Advanced Mask Collection, $25
I haven’t tried FOREO’s UFO Masks just yet, but I was definitely intrigued at the preview. FOREO’s new collection of five UFO Activated Mask formulas target a variety of skin concerns and combine a highly-concentrated face mask with an expert UFO treatment routine for total skin recovery. Sounds both high-tech and relaxing…sign me up!

Shopping: Valentine’s Day Gift Guide 2019

27 January, 2019 Nelia

I’ve always had a soft spot for Valentine’s Day, despite it being a “made up Hallmark holiday”. A day to celebrate love (whether it’s romantic love, friendship, or self-love) by consuming copious amounts of chocolate and other yummy treats, while treating yourself or your loved ones to cute presents that signify how much they mean to you? What’s not to love?!

Perhaps your mom has been asking about the benefits of face rollers (this one’s rose quartz and so pretty), or your significant other loves to cook (this heart-shaped Staub cocotte is delightful), maybe your friend is in search of a new perfume (this limited-edition CHANEL N°5 is a showstopper), or perhaps you’re a sucker for a good heart print (this Hermès scarf is for you!)…whoever makes your heart happy deserves to be treated to something that will make them smile.

Do you love Valentine’s Day and everything that comes with it? Share in the comments.

CHANEL Haute Couture Spring 2019 Collection

23 January, 2019 Nelia

The beauty of couture is that you can’t really appreciate it from images alone. It may seem ludicrous to spend an eye-watering amount of money on a gown sprinkled with some sequins, but in reality, these clothes are art – each piece exquisitely made, with every sequin applied by hand, one-of-a-kind. So while going through the photos of the CHANEL Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection, I took my time taking in each image, zooming in to check out the surprises that reveal themselves, like the delicate floral applique made out of feathers, or the dried flowers dipped in resin, or a gown that may appear white on first look, but is actually made entirely out of sequins. Breathtaking!

And while, of course, the mere mortals won’t be running off to boutiques, hoping to score one of these looks, I always hope to see the more creative gowns on a major red carpet, like the Academy Awards. Just imagine Lady Gaga in the look below, or Rachel Weisz in literally anything from this collection?! I know that these two don’t work with CHANEL, but one can dream.

Besides the intricate details, I loved the makeup look created for this runway show. Lower lash line winged eyeliner (instead of the usual top) seems to be fairly easy to replicate, and will surely spice up your usual eye makeup routine, without it being deemed too crazy. CHANEL’s global creative makeup and color designer Lucia Pica used the CHANEL Stylo Ombre et Contour pencil in Bleu Nuit to create the smoky effect, CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Extreme Intense Matte Lip Colour in Épitome on the lips, with a coat of CHANEL Rouge Allure Liquid Powder in Invincible on top, in case you wanted to try this at home.

What did you think of CHANEL Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection? Share in the comments.

Holidays 2018: Gift Guide

21 November, 2018 Nelia

Shopbop
I love Shopbop for many reasons, but the amazing selection of high and low must-haves is what keeps me coming back again and again. If you’re looking for perfect holiday gifts, there’s no better time to get your Shopbop on. You can get up to 75% off sale and up to 25% off full-price items until November 25th, using promo code MORE18. Think vintage CHANEL and Hermes pieces that never go on sale, toasty cashmere, silk pillowcases, chic PJs…there are stylish gifts for every budget and every wishlist! And don’t forget to treat yourself while you’re at it.

Holt Renfrew
Holiday sales at Holt Renfrew are pretty epic. Over the years, I’ve treated myself to some lovely designer finds at a fraction of the original price, and this year I hope to continue this tradition. But while holiday shopping for yourself can be super satisfying, Holt Renfrew makes it super easy to stock up on prezzies for everyone on your list, from fashion lovers to tiny tots. There are sweet Parisian indulgences (Angelina Chocolate, anyone?), luxurious beauty finds (Diptyque gift sets, limited-edition CHANEL perfume, oh my!), stylish offerings from Canadian brands like Smythe, and too many heart-stopping pairs of shoes to count. Holt Renfrew is truly a one-stop Canadian shop for those unforgettable magenta-wrapped gifts anyone would be thrilled to find under their tree.

Indigo
Whenever I’m shopping for hostess gifts, presents for the little ones, or some cute but useful stocking stuffers, Indigo is my go-to. My faves this year include Becoming by Michelle Obama, cozy reading socks, a chic mirror compact that doubles as a cell-phone charger, the latest Fitbit Charge 3 (it comes in rose gold!), Jenny Bird pins, and one of the hottest gifts this year – the gravity blanket (for those with anxiety issues or trouble sleeping). Lots of pre-Black Friday sales are happening at Indigo at the moment, so it’s a really great time to get your shop on and save some money on those holiday presents.

Shoppers Drug Mart
If you collect PC Optimum points, then holiday shopping at Shoppers Drug Mart is a no-brainer. You can buy some really great presents, while earning points to treat yourself later. At a recent holiday preview, I spotted some wonderful gift ideas like magnetic makeup brushes by Quo, a wide selection of designer fragrances, luxurious beauty advent calendars (like this huge one from Artdeco), sleek electric toothbrushes, and so much more! There are plenty of gifts for kids, tech geeks, makeup lovers, hosts and hostesses, husbands, boyfriends, the mailman…you name it. And best of all, a lot of these gifts are available online, and plenty of stores are open 24/7, letting you shop around the clock.

What They Wore: YSL Beauty Hotel Party

19 September, 2018 Nelia

YSL Beauty Hotel opened its chic doors in Toronto last week for two days of instagrammable installations, beauty discoveries, and a digital pop-up shop. With previous stops in Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul and New York, Toronto was chosen as the second North American location for this cool experience, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Guests were treated to makeup touch-ups, YSL temporary tattoos, fun photobooth, lipstick engraving station, and even a claw machine. Sadly, I am terrible at claw machines, and didn’t end up winning anything, but I did have fun with the digital pop-up shop. With just a few clicks, guests were able to virtually try the latest YSL Beauty launches through YouCam makeup app, with looks ranging from subtle to bold. With both floors packed with beauty lovers, the rest of the night was a bit of a blur. But thankfully, I have my newly-engraved Rogue Pur Couture The Slim to remember this cool event by.

Did you visit the YSL Beauty Hotel in Toronto or in another city? What did you think? Share in the comments.

Beauty: Murale Fall 2018 Faves

26 July, 2018 Nelia

I love summer as much as the next sun-deprived Torontonian, but after checking out the Murale Fall 2018 preview, I walked away super excited about new beauty products arriving in stores soon. From seemingly miraculous grey-hair reversing treatments, to tea-infused sheet masks, here are my top 5 Murale fall arrivals.
1. Phyto RE30 $59 (September 2018)
I didn’t think it was possible, but Phyto RE30 is the first anti-grey hair treatment that promises to bring back the natural pigment to your hair without having to dye it. Sounds like magic, but apparently it’s just science. “The RE30 peptide, which is the result of 6 years of research, is revolutionary technology that is able to boost the natural pigment production while protecting from future depigmentation.” I’ve only seen 2 grey hairs on my head so far, but I am definitely trying this treatment to make sure my head of hair remains nice and grey-free.
2. Filorga Lift-Designer Ultra-Lifting Serum $110 (September 2018)
As a fan of Filorga, I was really excited to learn about this new tightening serum with a built-in face roller designed to visibly tighten the features, plump the skin and sculpt the face.
3. Teaology Mask Mania Box $49.95 (September 2018)
I love trying new masks and I can’t wait to get my hands on this box set. The Mask Mania Box contains 4 sheet masks infused with various types of tea to offer anti-aging, exfoliating, and hydrating benefits, among others, along with 2 anti-puffiness eye masks. Perfect for pampering your skin.
4. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Riche $49 (September 2018)
This oil from Nuxe is a cult fave for a reason – it’s a multi-tasker that can be applied directly to skin, added to bathwater or spritzed onto your hairbrush to add shine to hair. And while I love the original, I am excited for the Riche version for dry skin, because we all need an extra moisture boost in the winter.
5. Filorga Optim-Eyes Lashes & Brows $75 (August 2018)
If you have sparse brows and lashes that leave a lot to be desired, then you should get excited about this Filorga booster serum and volumizing care. It promises to add length, thickness and volume, while strengthening the hair, delaying it from falling out. Fingers crossed for naturally thick brows!

Beauty: Bastide at Holt Renfrew Yorkdale

5 June, 2018 Nelia

When I first got introduced to Bastide last year, I was immediately smitten. Not only do the products smell like heaven and work like a charm, the beautiful packaging makes me smile every time. Last month, I attended the celebration of the chic new Bastide counter at Holt Renfrew Yorkdale, with the world-renowned hairstylist and co-founder of Bastide, Frederic Fekkai in attendance. As someone who’s passionate about natural beauty, Fekkai along with his wife, Shirin von Wulffen, acquired and re-launched their favorite heritage brand from Aix-en-Provence – Bastide, a beauty and lifestyle brand inspired by the “wellness philosophy of Provence and founded on a commitment to artisanship and to clean, toxin-free living”.

If you’re not familiar with Bastide, you should know that the brand does not test on animals, avoids ingredients like parabens, silicone, and sulfate, relying on mostly natural ingredients instead. The brand’s hand and body lotions for example, are formulated with Provence honey, olive oil, and calendula, made with 97% ingredients of natural origin, and leaving even my uber-sensitive skin feeling soft and smooth, without irritating it. All products are created in Provence by Bastide Beautisans – expert artisans with generations of expertise in oils, soaps, lotions, and natural beauty. And to top it all off, the brand embraces sustainable packaging, using recyclable glass and paper instead of plastic. Bastide is truly a feel-good brand to support, and I am so happy to be able to find a wide selection of their lovely products at Holt Renfrew.

Are you familiar with Bastide products? Share your thoughts in the comments.
