Shopping: Carrie Necklace from oNecklace

7 December, 2020 Nelia

I can’t believe how long it’s been since my last blog post. Feels like yesterday, but also like it’s been 25 years. COVID, lockdowns, social distancing, working from home…it’s such a blur. I’ve been meaning to write so many posts, but work, family, and sanity took precedence. But here I am to write about something super cute that I’ve wanted to buy for a very long time…since the first time I saw it on Sex and the City when it first aired, but somehow never actually pulled the trigger for a variety of reasons. So when oNecklace reached out, my answer was an enthusiastic yes, and a couple of weeks later a beautiful dainty necklace arrived at my door.

With Connel’s Chain getting its own Instagram account, I’m surprised there isn’t one dedicated to Carrie’s Necklace, because it was iconic. Layered or worn on its own, with tank tops, gowns, or underwear, lost on the floor of a Dior boutique, ever-present, but not at all flashy, it was a steady presence on the show, and something I’ve always coveted. As someone with an unusual name, who could never get a name keychain at an amusement park, the Carrie necklace spoke to me in so many ways. But for whatever reason, I thought it wouldn’t be cool to copy Carrie, or whatever, but the truth is, now that I have it, I never want to take it off. When I excitedly told my husband about my new fave necklace, he was a little sad that I’d never told him about it…it certainly would’ve earned him some brownie points – a gift that’s personalized and classic at the same time? Yes, please!

I had to turn off comments on the blog due to way too much spam, but feel free to reach out to me on Instagram, and share your thoughts on the ubiquitous name necklace. Do you love them, or is it not for you? And also, if you’re still reading, thanks for sticking around, or returning, or whatever…I actually missed this a lot, and will try to do it more often…if the pandemic doesn’t get in the way.

Oscars 2020: What They Wore

10 February, 2020 Nelia

I don’t know about you, but I found this year’s Oscars red carpet painfully boring. I had a few favourites, but judging from some of their Twitter coverage, I’m in the minority. Take this ruffled Valentino gown on Kristen Wiig, for example…I ADORE IT. It’s so unexpected, so fresh, and so stunning (gimme!!!). Lots of people are comparing it to lasagna noodles…and all I have to say about that is…if this is lasagna noodles, Kristen is SERVING IT!

On the less polarizing side of the spectrum, I actually enjoyed Brie Larson’s very un-Celine Celine (?). Are we sure it’s Celine, you guys? Either way, she looks beautiful but not in a precious way. Then there’s Lucy Boynton in CHANEL, actually looking quite precious, but she’s totally pulling it off. The Peter Pan collar, the bows…all of it! And those hair accessories and makeup?! Perfection!

Maya Rudolph’s sequined caftan is my dream red carpet dress…loose enough that you don’t have to diet, and still well-cut enough to drape nicely without looking shlumpy. Always a winner in my books.

Last, but not least, queen of meme-able Oscars reactions Billie Eilish wore a very Billie Eilish CHANEL outfit, which isn’t something I’d wear, but it’s so her, and so cool, I can’t help but stan. I’ll take her loose tweed suit over a forgettable gown any day.

So who was your fave this year? Tweet or DM me on Twitter on Instagram and let me know.

CHANEL Opens New Montreal Boutique at Holt Renfrew Ogilvy

10 December, 2019 Nelia

CHANEL-Montreal-Holt-Renfrew-Ogilvy
If you love fashion and CHANEL, book your tickets to Montreal ASAP, because the iconic brand just expanded their Montreal presence with a new Peter Marino designed boutique. The 310 sqm boutique within Holt Renfrew Ogilvy will offer Ready-to-Wear, handbags, shoes, costume jewellery and eyewear as well as a selection of Watches & Fine Jewellery. Judging from the photos, the space is both timeless and understated, with the iconic tweed upholstery, silk and wool carpeting, and textured wall finishes in custom ‘moongold’ and coromandel tones. The twin staircases on the main floor are a striking feature, with the right staircase leading clients to heaven…aka the shoe salon, and the left to a second accessory salon.

A larger CHANEL boutique means greater selection, which also means if I can’t find something in Toronto, I can get my SA to try and find it in Montreal. A win-win all around. Next time I’m in Montreal, I’m definitely adding a visit to this beauty of a boutique to my itinerary, along with brunch at Arthurs Nosh Bar, and a St-Viateur bagel run. And just like that, I’m in sudden need of a weekend in Montreal! Thanks, CHANEL!

What They Wore: Capsule98.com Launch Party

3 December, 2019 Nelia

For the last couple of years, I’ve been obsessed with podcasts. Whenever I’m on the subway, or walking around by myself, I’m always listening to something fun, or educational, or both. The Capsule ’98 – a ’90s nostalgia podcast by a fellow Torontonian Randi Bergman, with featured guest appearances by celebs like Dan Levy and Sarah Gadon, and icons like Jeanne Beker and costume designer Mona May – is one of my personal faves and must-listens that I never skip. Which is why I was so stoked to see it expand with a fantastic new storytelling website Capsule98.com. There are Bedroom Diaries, featuring the coolest people you wish you knew, interviews about all things ’90s with celebs like Leighton Meester, and lots more. If you’re a child of the ’90s, or you simply love everything about that decade, you should definitely dive into this time capsule of pop culture, fashion, and nostalgia, I promise, you’ll love it.

Last week, Randi invited us to celebrated the launch of Capsule98.com with an epic slumber party, and most attendees certainly got the memo! From chic PJ sets, to glam boudoir lewks, this was the chicest slumber party I’ve ever attended. Despite having perfect PJs to wear to the party, I ended up throwing on my best Empire Records inspired outfit instead (silk PJs in the winter after getting over a cold was just not going to happen), complete with a fuzzy cropped sweater, mini skirt, and a vintage backpack, while my friend Anya rocked her fave Sleepshirt. We snacked on copious amounts of candy, lounged on Casper mattresses, sipped Ace Hill radlers, and posed for glamour shots by the incredible Renata Kaveh. It was a night to remember! Luckily, photographer Mauricio Calero was there to capture it all for posterity. Click through the photos below for those fab slumber party fashions, and check out Capsule98.com for all things ’90s nostalgia.

You Are Invited: Art Toronto 2019

25 October, 2019 Nelia

Yesterday marked my first ever visit to Art Toronto – Canada’s international contemporary and modern art fair that was founded in 2000. I am in the process of redecorating my living room and thought this would be a great place to check out some art and get inspired. And it really (REALLY) was. There were so many participating galleries and artists from all over the world, I was determined to visit every single booth. It took a while, but I think we managed to check out everything that was on display. And while I walked away empty-handed (the Picasso print I had my eye on was just a tad LOT out of my price range), a lot of amazing pieces I saw (and loved) were fairly affordable.

If you are looking to add a piece of beautiful art to your collection, this fair is not to be missed! And with tickets starting at $17, Art Toronto might just be the perfect way to spend your weekend.

Shopping: Giambattista Valli x H&M Lookbook and Full Collection

7 October, 2019 Nelia

giambattista-valli-hm-collection-lookbook
Even though it’s only been a few months, it feels like it’s been ages since the Giambattista Valli x H&M collaboration was first announced, and now we have just one more month to go until the collection is finally in stores worldwide. To get us both pumped up and prepared to shop, H&M released the official campaign images shot by Kyle Weeks and styled by Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert, as well as photos of the full collection today, and my personal level of excitement has just gone through the roof. Despite my affinity for fancy frilly frocks, this time I’m all about the men’s collection of animal print suits, cool sweatshirts, and anything/everything with paintings printed on. Of course, I’m going to try to get my hands on a beautiful gown or maybe a more wearable maxi dress with ruffles, but I’ll be happy if I walk away with a tiger-print suit, or a polka-dot blouse, or maybe an embellished hoodie.

The collection will hit select stores worldwide and online on November 7th, and you’d better get your shopping plan ready to go by the time that day rolls around. Just like previous H&M designer collabs, this one’s going to fly off the shelves in no time.

CHANEL Spring-Summer 2020 Collection

1 October, 2019 Nelia

As you may know already, CHANEL is always my most-anticipated show during Paris Fashion Week. I love seeing the new accessory designs for the next season, I love checking out the new selection of tweed blazers, wishing that perhaps one of them will be THE ONE I’ve been searching for. I always look forward to the reveal of the collection’s theme and the nearly-always-awe-inspiring set design. I know that it takes many hours/days/weeks/months to design a collection, cast the models, build the sets, and put it all together. A fashion show is a result of many hours of blood, sweat, and tears, and a culmination of so much hard work, which is why seeing that publicity-hungry “comedian” storming the stage during the final walk felt so gross to me. I didn’t find it all that humorous when Gigi Hadid had to literally put a stop to this woman’s antics. I hate that Virginie Viard’s first ready-to-wear presentation since Karl Lagerfeld’s passing was interrupted by someone so selfish and unfunny.

But enough about her and on to the impeccable Spring-Summer 2020 collection itself. Personally, I loved it. The models sauntered from “roof” to “roof” in elegant, modern, but still very CHANEL looks in classic shades of black, white, blue and red. There were youthful tweed rompers and jumpsuits that I would wear every day of my life if I could. There were classic CHANEL bags imagined in intricate tweed, chains, and pearls. Bows and dainty CCs adorned dresses and sweaters, with many of the looks cinched with belts of varying thickness. And while I don’t think I could pull off the pleated waist denim the way the models did so effortlessly, the striped knit twinset pairing felt fun and fresh for spring, a style hack I’ll be borrowing next season.

And while I didn’t find my perfect CHANEL blazer in this collection, I did add a tweed romper to my never-ending “dream wardrobe” wishlist. How could I not, when they look this good?

TIFF 2019: Nespresso Coffee With Creators With Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel

16 September, 2019 Nelia

A very intimate affair, the Nespresso Coffee With Creators chat was one of my personal highlights of the festival. The event started bright and early on a Saturday morning, but thankfully, Nespresso took great care of us, with plenty of delicious java on offer. Jason Segel, who was the first cast member to arrive, made a beeline for the coffee area, introduced himself to the Nespresso baristas, and requested a “medium coffee with a splash of cream”. As a fan of Segel’s work ever since Freaks and Geeks, I was delighted to see how friendly and personable the actor was with everyone he interacted with, introducing himself with a smile, appearing relaxed and in good spirits.

The morning’s conversation was held in support of the world premiere of Gabriela Cowperthwaite-directed film The Friend, starring Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel, based on a true story about a husband dealing with his wife’s terminal cancer, and the couple’s best friend who moves into the family’s home to help out. The director and the stars were joined by Matthew Teague, the real-life husband whose story the film was based on, screenwriter Brad Ingelsby, and producer Michael Pruss. From the challenges of playing a “real” person, to the fun ways the stars got to shake off the difficult subject matter after a day of shooting, the conversation proved to be both insightful and entertaining, making the time fly by. And while I didn’t catch the film during the festival, it’s definitely on my list now.

It’s always a pleasure and a privilege, to watch the cast and crew share intimate insights about their work, and this year Nespresso (the official coffee sponsor of TIFF) and the Coffee With Creators panel series focused on supporting local, up-and-coming filmmakers, as well as established talent like Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel. If you’re curious, you can watch the chat on Deadline’s website, and if you’d like to read the heartbreaking 2015 Esquire article the film was based on, you can read it here.

TIFF 2019: Endings, Beginnings After Party with HUGO BOSS

11 September, 2019 Nelia

While my fave thing to do during TIFF is watching as many movies as I can squeeze into my schedule, going to celeb-studded film after parties is a close second. This past Sunday, I got a chance to do both! After watching the latest Drake Doremus film Endings, Beginnings starring Shailene Woodley, Jamie Dornan, and Sebastian Stan, my friend Sharon and I attended the film’s after party hosted by HUGO BOSS at downtown’s Montecito restaurant. The film, about a woman torn between two very different men was right up my alley – in the infamous words of Stefan – it had EVERYTHING: a complex female protagonist, steamy romance, gorgeous scenery, drool-worthy wardrobe, and of course, two of the hottest leading men in the industry. So just imagine our excitement when we found ourselves feet away from these men (and Shailene) later at the HUGO BOSS party, trying (and failing) to keep our cool.

After a round of pinball, a couple of ginger beers, quick hellos to friends and acquaintances, and what felt like an eternity of getting up the courage to chat up the stars in attendance, we inched our way closer to Sebastian Stan until we were standing back-to-back with the Winter Soldier himself. Another eternity later, a glass of red wine in his hand, Sebastian was grilling us on our thoughts about the movie, admitting that after several TIFFs he still hasn’t really seen Toronto properly, and being very tight-lipped about his upcoming MCU show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, revealing only that the story is going to be “complex and incredible” (can’t wait!). Stan was understandably jet-lagged after his morning flight from London, but that didn’t stop him from enjoying the party, and being very generous with his time. As I shared on Instagram, meeting your fave celebs isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, but I walked away from our quick interaction with Sebastian a true stan.

Meanwhile, Jamie Dornan, just behind Sebastian, was chatting with Soho House Toronto’s Markus Anderson and publicist Evelyn Karamanos, keeping to his corner of the VIP, and Shailene Woodley, having taken off her oversized denim jacket, was all smiles nearby, swaying to the music, and taking photos with delighted attendees. Drake Doremus, Lindsay Sloane, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Shamier Anderson were also working the room, everyone in great spirits. And that’s the thing about this beautiful cast…they all seemed to genuinely like each other, with Dornan professing his adoration of Stan’s character in the post-film Q&A, telling the giddy audience that while watching the film, he “fell deeply, madly in love with Sebastian Stan”. Same, Jamie, same.
