If you tuned in to my #YorkdaleOscars live-tweet session, you already know that I thought that this year’s Oscars were a bit of a snoozefest. NPH’s jokes fell flat, the red carpet wasn’t very exciting, and the show felt like it lasted FOREVER. But despite all that, once I started going through my best-dressed picks, I came up with quite a few faves. A little disclaimer…not all of these looks are 100% amazing in my books…but they were the best of the bunch – the most exciting, most beautiful, most elaborate. There were also some bad ones…like Anna Kendrick’s bridesmaid dress, or Karolina Kurkova’s rumpled duvet gown…but we won’t go there. Instead, let’s see who brought their A (and A-) game to Dolby this year.
Marion Cotillard’s Christian Dior Couture was one of the faves…not only because of the unusual construction and exquisite detailing, but because it was Marion who was wearing it. On anyone else this would not have been a win. But she really sold it.
As I mentioned on Twitter, Laura Dern isn’t usually a fashion girl, but she BROUGHT IT this year in a silver Alberta Ferretti gown. Bow down!
Julianne Moore was the clear winner this year…not only taking home the coveted Best Actress award, but rocking a custom CHANEL Couture gown like it was made for her…because it was.
More after the jump!
Usually, I am not into JLo’s over-the-top sparkly gowns. But because this one isn’t her usual body-con shape, I think I like it much more. She looked like a Disney princess and that face looked as gorgeous as ever. I’m not ashamed to admit that I actually really enjoyed this look on her.
Naomi Watts wore one of my faves this year. The metallic Armani gown looked sensational on TV, but in photos…without the sparkle it looked a bit flat. Still, I think it’s super fresh and not something that we’ve seen over and over again.
Lupita’s gown was embellished with over 6000 pearls, and it was one of those divisive Oscar looks. Personally, it wasn’t my absolute favourite, but I really liked the pearls framing Lupita’s lovely face.
We didn’t see much of Emma Stone on the red carpet…and she was mainly absent from the show…but I really did enjoy her Elie Saab gown. Unexpected colour, lots of sparkle. It was a solid effort.
Rosamund Pike’s red-hot Givenchy gown caused quite a stir online…but for some reason I liked it just ok. I realize that she looks phenomenal in it, but there’s something about the gown (red colour perhaps) that makes me hold back. Call me crazy, but it wasn’t a clear winner for me…even though I still think she belongs on the best-dressed list.
Reese Witherspoon’s dress looked blue to me, but everyone seems to think that it’s black and white. I love it if it’s light blue, and I don’t if it’s white…so there’s that.
Last, but not least, Keira Knightley continues to look adorable on the red carpet. Many of you didn’t like her floral gown, but I thought it was one of the most interesting choices of the night. It’s a win in my books.
