With fall on our heels, it’s time to start updating our wardrobes. Sandals and shorts may not have as much wearability once rainy weather sets in, so off they go to the back of the closet, and out come the sweaters, the boots and the leather pants. As with every new season, there’s excitement in the air, and temptation to buy lots of new trendy clothes. And while I don’t discourage you from jumping on the trend bandwagon, sometimes a girl can’t handle any more one-season-wonders in her closet. Last month, I stopped by Mendocino – one of the trendiest stores at Yorkdale – to find 3 items that are in this season, but won’t go out of style for at least a few years, and maybe ever! I focused on outerwear, because living in Toronto, you really can’t have too many coats and jackets, and here’s what happened:
Three Timeless Outerwear Trends After the jump!
1. Leather Jacket (Mackage)
I’ve had my shrunken leather moto jacket for YEARS. I have actually lost track of how many years exactly. And year after year, fall, spring, and yes, even summer, that jacket is a staple in my wardrobe. The great thing about a well-fitted leather jacket is that (if you take care of it), it’ll last you forever. And if you stick to a classic cut, it will also never go out of style. Throw it over a cocktail dress for an edgy date night look, or over a tee and jeans for a casual weekend stroll.
2. Blanket Coat (Line Knitwear)
Blanket or wrap coats have been around forever, and my guess is, it’s because they are so cozy. To make sure your blanket coat has staying power, stick to neutral colors, classic patterns, and high-quality fabrics. The best (and easiest) way to wear one without looking bulky is to throw it over an outfit that isn’t fussy. Leather leggings and a simple tunic, or skinny jeans and a sweater will look best under such a coat.
3. Furry Jacket (Free People)
Furry coats are going to be HUGE this fall and winter, but they aren’t exactly a new trend. Every year, I see a few great (faux) fur coats out and about and I always want to get one too. Well, no more excuses, I already picked up 2 furry coats this month, and it’s not even fall yet!
Leopard print faux fur jackets are a safe investment (think Kate Moss and Sienna Miller), but other colours can have longevity too. Last winter, I saw Odessa Paloma Parker rocking a bubblegum pink shaggy coat, and it was perfect. It was vintage, but felt super fresh and modern. If you’re not quite as brave, stick to neutral colours, and keep your outfit as streamlined as possible, or glam it up, and wear a party dress under that faux fur topper like Adrienne.
