The Best
So it’s only 7pm on Oscars night, and it might be a bit presumptuous of me, but I am declaring the radiant Lupita Nyong’o my best-dressed of the evening in her stunning custom-made blue Prada gown and Fred Leighton jewels. Watching her on the red carpet made me fall in love with her all over again. It was so refreshing to see someone so well-adjusted, eloquent, humble, funny, and gorgeous on the red carpet. I could watch her for HOURS.
Cate Blanchett in a stunning beaded Armani Prive gown looked ethereal and every bit like the winner that she is. She always carries herself with so much confidence and class. And of course, she truly is one of the most stylish women out there, so even though I was a bit sad not to see her in something more adventurous, I think this gown was still a perfect choice for a Best Actress nominee (and winner?).
As much as I usually hate the safe black or white gowns on the red carpet, the stunning Bulgari necklace over this beaded Calvin Klein gown on Naomi Watts really elevated this look, and made me take notice. This is obviously nowhere near the amazingness that is Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada gown, but it definitely is one of my fave looks of the night.
Same goes for Charlize Theron in a stunning black gown. Only Charlize can make a black exciting and interesting on the red carpet. That deep plunge, perfect necklace to accentuate it, and of course that exquisite face – just perfect. I still can’t believe that THIS woman is dating Sean Penn. WHY?!
I was on the fence whether to add Kate Hudson in this Versace gown to my Best Dressed list, because there may be something off about that shiny fabric, but at the end of the day, that center knot, that cape, and that plunging neckline all sell it for me. She looks stunning and I love it.
The Worst and The Meh after the jump!
The Worst
It pains me to put “the worst” and “Kerry Washington” in the same sentence, but this wrinkled mess of a Jason Wu gown on Kerry is just that…a mess! I get that being pregnant limits the options one may have, but when you’re as in-demand as Kerry, this could not have been her only option. On the other hand, her hair and makeup team did an amazing job, so let’s just focus on that radiant face instead!
While this red Dior gown is far from the absolute worst we’ve seen, considering that Jennifer Lawrence is as A-List as can be right now, surely she would’ve had access to much superior frocks. The peplum on this gown should’ve been a few inches higher, and that hair styling (and possibly colour) made her look a lot older, making this look a definite “no” in my books. I know that a lot of you will disagree, but the higher the status, the higher the standards. Luckily, JLaw is still very young, and will surely have more wins in the future.
As beautiful as Angelina Jolie is…her style is pretty questionnable in my books. Take this Elie Saab for example…doesn’t it scream “old lady dress”?! It does to me. It might be the frumpiness around her waistline, or the neckline…or the sleeves. Whatever it is…I hate it.
The Meh
Amy Adams was nominated for the Best Actress award tonight, but could you tell by looking at her dress?! She went with a flattering custom Gucci gown that looked navy in some photos and more vibrant blue in others, but it lacked the wow factor all around. The only memorable thing about this look were her beautiful Tiffany and Co earrings, but the rest of it was a bit of a snoozefest for me.
As much as I love Sandra Bullock and Alexander McQueen, this dress does not scream “The Oscars” to me. The colour is boring, the fit is ok, but it’s all very blah…and once again it makes me wonder why she’s not wearing something more show-stopping with her figure, her status, and her beauty. Maybe next time.
