Monday night marked my first time at a Matis show. Set at the beautifully ornate Fairmont Royal York Hotel ballroom, I could squint and almost pretend that I was at a show in Paris. Almost. Instead, I watched a young Canadian designer prove that you don’t have to look far to find jaw-dropping talent. It might sound corny, but seeing Lucian Matis Fall 2012 collection in person took my breath away…and quite possibly blew my mind from the amount of “WANTS” going through my head.
There was just so much good in Matis’ collection. No, there was so much EFFING AMAZING, that I can’t just name one thing. The intricate black lace with strategic pattern placement, gorgeous feathered skirts, dresses, and bunny ears, feminine cuts that would make anyone’s body look sexy and va-va-voom, well-executed croc-skin detailing on jackets…it was all so beautiful. Except…
…the pasties. Yes, the collection featured a lot of see-through designs on young models, but slapping white pasties on their breasts was akin to trying to cover up at a nudist beach – completely unnecessary. Alas, that’s a gripe with presentation, not the actual collection, which I really loved.
Lucian Matis is already well-known for his extravagant designs, but I truly believe that with this…more restrained Fall 2012 collection, he will surely be able to move on to the next level. What that next level might be? Perhaps an A-lister in one of his intricate stunners at an awards show? Couldn’t you just see one of his gowns on Cammy D, Zoe Saldana, or Goop?
In the meantime, I have got to figure out a way to get my hands on one (or all) of those lace dresses…before Matis becomes incredibly famous (and his clothes, completely unaffordable).
What did you think of Lucian Matis Fall 2012 collection? Are you as enthused as I am? Share in the comments.
