Styled By Nelia: Leather in the Summer

IMG_5446

I often get questions from readers asking me about ways to incorporate leather pieces into their summer wardrobes. Sounds near-impossible, but it’s actually easier than you think. Last month, I stopped by the stunning Danier store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre to show Carolina, how it’s done.

There are three rules I follow when trying to pull off this look. Read them after the jump!

Styled By Nelia: White Denim for Summer

IMG_3765

It finally feels like summer. So to prep you for more sunny days ahead, I thought I’d share one of my favourite summer must-haves! Year after year, white jeans remain a staple in my warm weather wardrobe. Not only are they incredibly versatile, but they are super flattering to boot! I know that white denim has gotten a bad rep over the last few years. I blame it on the “ultra-low hiphugger” phase, followed by the “trashy denim” phase. But no word of a lie – white jeans are flattering…you just have to find the right pair for your bod!

Last month, I stopped by Smart Set at Yorkdale to show Ash how she could add a pair of white skinny jeans to her wardrobe, and to prove to her (and you) just how versatile those pants can be. Dare I say, even more versatile than your blue jeans?! Don’t believe me? Here are three super easy ways you can integrate a pair into your everyday life.

Nautical

Is there anything cuter than a nautical look? Well, it’s also incredibly simple to pull together – all you need is a pair of white jeans, a striped tee (or a striped blazer), and you’re done! Stick to the “nautical” colour palette, which should include pops of red, blue, and white, and you really can’t go wrong. Wearing white jeans in this case, provides a clean background for all the other colours, keeping this look from becoming too costumey.

Black and White

The monochromatic trend has been around for seasons now, and it’s not going away any time soon. For this look, I styled a fab striped blouse with an edgy faux leather vest to create an outfit that works at the office, as well as happy hour! And don’t those white jeans look a lot cooler than a pair of boring black slacks would?

White on White

There’s absolutely nothing chicer than an all-white outfit. Caution must be used when putting together various shades of white and cream – keep it all the same colour…or if the shades are starkly different, make sure that textures are too, which will make the mismatch look deliberate instead of looking like a washing machine accident. You can never go wrong with a smart, well-tailored blazer or vest, thrown over a white tee or blouse, and a pair of white pointy-toe pumps. The great thing about white-on-white, is that you can really make it your own – minimalists can forego the accessories altogether, while the peacocks could pile on bracelets and rings, throw on a chic gold chain necklace, and finish it all off with a pair of Hollywood starlet sunnies. Whatever rocks your boat.

I hope these 3 easy ways of wearing white jeans inspire you to try this timeless trend this summer, and check out some of our previous Styled By Nelia videos for even more styling tips!

Shopping: ALDO A-List Party at Yorkdale Shopping Centre!

aldo-alist-party-toronto-yorkdale-2014 (18)

When ALDO asked me to host yet another A-List party at their stunning Yorkdale store, I didn’t have to give it much thought. These parties are always such a blast. I mean, who would ever say no to a shopping soiree full of drool-worthy shoes and accessories, yummy sweet bites, and hanging out with the coolest people ever?!

This time, I gave out 5 gift cards to Toronto’s most stylish shoppers, helping them pick up summer shoes of their dreams. And let me tell you, ALDO’s SS14 collection is what dreams are made of – from seriously sexy sky-high heels to ugly-cute slip-ons, and anything else in between, there’s a pair out there for any taste! And don’t even get me started on the latest ALDO Rise Ostwald Helgason collection – it’s beyond amazing and is full of must-haves.

I wore my fave (and super comfy) orange Umaniel kitten heel slingbacks and was able to dance around the store for hours, while mingling with shoppers, being silly with Max Kopanygin, and of course trying on more shoes. It was a blast!

Thanks to all those that stopped by our event bright early on a Sunday morning, and for those that weren’t able to attend this time, you can still check out the new arrivals at the Yorkdale store – staff members at that location are not only super helpful, but they are also the most stylish group of co-workers I’ve ever seen. Happy Shopping!

Styled By Nelia: Dressing for Prom

styled-be-nelia-le-chateau-prom

Prom season is here, and if you still don’t have your dream dress in the bag, don’t worry – there’s still time! Last week, I stopped by Le Château at Yorkdale Shopping Centre to help Daphne, who will be graduating this year, shop for her upcoming prom. Together, we selected a few looks inspired by three stylish celebs, to help make your search a little easier.

Our first look was inspired by Queen Bey herself – a glam and sexy black gown with embroidered bodice – perfect for a fancy soiree. While many are apprehensive to wear black for special occasions, it’s actually the easiest way to look sophisticated and glamorous. All you need to do to make sure you don’t enter snoozeville is choose a black gown with fun details like embroidery, cut-outs, and other embellishments. And to top it off, you can add colour to your look with jewelry and accessories. For Daphne, I chose a pair of sparkly green earrings for a pop of colour.

If you’re a girly girl like Taylor Swift, a floral frock might be just what you’re looking for. To avoid looking too casual, make sure to add a sparkly or a metallic belt, and stay away from the not-so-dressy fabrics like cotton.

And finally, my favourite look of the three was inspired by Angelina Jolie and Diane Keaton. Both actresses love to wear suits on (and off) the red carpet, and I adore them for it. If you want to stand out from the crowd and have the guts to go against the grain, a well-tailored suit is a great option. To pull off this look, your suit must fit you reaaaally well, so if it needs to be taken to a seamstress, just do it. A few bucks spent on alterations can make a world of difference. As for accessories, the best thing is – a suit is really a blank canvas, so you can go as bold or as minimal as you’d like. Obviously, for prom, I would suggest a few standout accessories, and a fun pair of shoes.

Good luck with your prom dress (or suit) search, and let us know whether you were inspired by the three looks we put together!

Uniqlo to Open First Toronto Store at Yorkdale in 2016?

uniqlo-toronto-canadian-store-2016

If you are a fan of the Japanese Gap, otherwise known as Uniqlo, then you’re in luck! Well, kind of. It’s been reported that the Japanese fashion retailer is currently in talks to open their first Canadian store in 2016.

“Uniqlo is negotiating a deal to lease a 35,000 square foot space in north Toronto’s high-traffic Yorkdale mall, industry sources said. “The negotiations are pretty advanced,” said one source familiar with the talks, who added Uniqlo aims to open both mall-based and street-front stores in this market.”

As Yorkdale’s Style Council member, I am both delighted and not very surprised that Uniqlo would choose Yorkdale as their springboard into the Canadian market, as many other retailers have done recently. The shopping centre is undeniably the best in Toronto, with an amazing mix of high-end and affordable retailers, and yet another expansion in the works. And while nothing has been solidly confirmed just yet, I am feeling quite optimistic about this one.

Are you excited about Uniqlo in Toronto and in Canada? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Styled By Nelia: Dressing for Spring

yorkdale-ted-baker-styled-by-nelia-2

It may be March, but it looks like Mother Nature hasn’t gotten the memo just yet. If you live in Toronto, tights and coats are still a sad necessity, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t start adding some fun spring pieces to our wardrobes! And that’s exactly what I did on the latest episode of Styled By Nelia.

Thanks to the beautiful new arrivals from Ted Baker, I was able to show Loretta how she could infuse a few cheerful spring pieces into her wardrobe to wear now, and when the weather finally warms up.

From the classic and oh-so-chic floral full skirts, to colourful ladylike dresses, Ted Baker’s spring collection is full of timeless elegant pieces that can be styled in a multitude of ways. If you’re eager to pack away your winter clothes, and start wearing your new spring pieces instead, all you need to do is throw on some tights (fleece-lined ones are my fave), put on a pair of ankle booties, layer your outfit with a cute cardigan and an even cuter coat, and you’re good to go! And once the temperatures warm up, ditch those cold weather essentials for a pair of pretty pumps, and enjoy the sunshine! It really is that easy.

So tell me, how do you deal with this year’s neverending winter? Do you live in your parka, or are you starting to embrace spring collections? Share in the comments!

Happy 50th Birthday, Yorkdale!

yorkdale-50th-anniversary-coco-rocha-lucian-matis

Today is a very special day…it’s Yorkdale’s 50th Anniversary, and I can’t believe that the sparkling “new” shopping centre has been around that long! To celebrate, Yorkdale collaborated with photographer and musician Bryan Adams to shoot an exclusive portrait series of several stylish and notable Torontonians, including Jeanne Beker, my fave Beckerman sisters, and Suzanne Rogers, among others, which will be released on Feb 26, 2014. 2014 will also mark the beginning of construction on Yorkdale’s newest, almost 300,000 square foot, $331 million expansion, and that means more amazing stores, better shopping experience, and an even bigger (and better) Yorkdale. But that’s not all!

“As part of the Golden Anniversary, Lucian Matis, one of Canada’s top luxury fashion designers, has created a glamorous golden evening gown exclusively for Yorkdale. Made of silk chiffon and French lace, the gown was delicately hand-sewn by Matis and took more than 85 hours to complete. The gown was photographed on Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha, the face of Yorkdale Style, for a special campaign celebrating the 50th anniversary of Yorkdale Shopping Centre, and will be on display at Yorkdale’s Guest Services until October.”

Pretty awesome, non? That dress, Coco, and the gilded (barely recognizable) tunnel – everything about this campaign is pure gold. Really looking forward to seeing that dress in person. Can’t wait!

On a personal note, I’ve had the honour and the pleasure of working closely with the incredible Yorkdale team over the last  years, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the Yorkdale Style Council. Happy 50th Birthday, dearest Yorkdale! You don’t look a day over 21!

Styled By Nelia: Putting Fit in Fitness

styled-by-nelia-gap-fit

Did you know that by January 17th most people that made resolutions on January 1st will have dropped theirs? 17 days is all it takes to lose all resolve and get back to bad habits. Last month, I hit up Yorkdale in search of people who made New Year’s resolutions, hoping to help at least one shopper stick to her resolution for a little while longer.

When I met Faiza, she shared that she made a couple of resolutions this year, including going to the gym more often, and traveling more. And while I couldn’t help her get another stamp in her passport, the “going to the gym” resolution seemed like one I could tackle.

Knowing how motivating a new set of gym clothes can be, I took Faiza to Gap Yorkdale, where she got to try on a variety of cool workout looks from the brand’s new and improved Gap Fit line. Faiza’s shopping experience is below!
