The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2010: Worst

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala is a ball. It is also a candy-shop-like heaven for the fashion lovers, what with beautiful gowns and crème de la crème of celeb world. But when said celebs pick some disastrous outfits to wear on such an important night, it makes me wonder if they did that to get noticed and to stand out from the crowd.

Well, in Katy Perry’s case, one does not need to wonder. A romantic white dress that lights up in the dark screams for attention…and that necklace is all wrong for the neckline of the dress. In my humble opinion, Katy Perry is the fail of the night.

A few other notables are Vera Farmiga in an ill-fitted baby blue Sophie Theallet for Gap fit for a saloon, Malin Ackerman in a not-so-flattering black-and-white dress, complete with blah hair, Elizabeth Banks in a fashion-forward feathered Gucci number that she overaccessorized bringing it from cool to trying-too-hard territory, and last but not least – Carey Mulligan in Miu Miu – cute dress, wrong occasion (plus the color washes out her pretty face).

What do you think about these dresses? Are they the worst of the night or do you have a soft spot for some of them? Sound off in the comments!

Oscars 2010: Best Dressed

Ruffles, and Notten, and Kruger, oh my! It wasn’t too tough to choose my fave four ladies on the Oscars red carpet last night, since so many actresses opted for pretty, but safe gowns, that only elicited a reaction of “meh” from me and my. Not so with these four ladies. My favorite of the night was Vera Farmiga’s ruffly fuchsia frock. Ruffles are tricky, and not everyone can pull them off without looking overpowered, but Farmiga managed to look fresh, stunning, and definitely not safe or meh. Finally, someone with a bit of imagination and guts on the red carpet!

The same can be said about Maggie Gyllenhaal. The aquatic print, the streamlined cut, the pink lips – it all adds up to an outfit that could look all sots of bad on a wrong person, but on Maggie it’s perfection (if only slightly too wrinkled for my taste). I loved her Dries Van Notten abstract print dress the moment I saw it!

It took me a bit longer to love Diane Kruger’s Chanel Haute Couture pick. The midsection ruffles appeared to look distracting at first, but the confidence with which she wore it, and the gorgeous back of her dress, made me love it the more I saw it! I’ve mentioned before that Diane doesn’t have a stylist, and on this occasion (as with many others), I fully support her gown choice! Plus, Lucky Magazine, reported that Kruger did her own makeup for the big night! How cool is that? I think she did a great job!

My final best dressed pick is Zoe Saldana. Saldana’s Golden Globes dress was not a safe choice, and neither is her Oscars Givenchy gown. It’s pouffy, with a bejeweled bodice, and with what looks like pom-poms all over the train of her skirt, but the color looks fantastic with her complexion, the “pom-poms” look fun and intricate, and I happen to love the blingy neckline. It’s fun to look at, and I am sure it was fun to wear!
