Barbara Bui at The Bay

Last week, the uber-chic French designer Barbara Bui paid a visit to The Room at The Bay to present her swoon-worthy Spring 2012 collection, soon to be available at The Room. Unfortunately, I missed most of Barbara’s interview with Jeanne Beker, so I’ll let the clothes speak for themselves.

Fall 2011 collection is available at The Room right now, so make sure to stop by and check it out in person. It really is so good!

LG Fashion Week: Joe Fresh Spring 2012 Collection

If I had to use one word to describe the Joe Fresh Spring 2012 collection it would be…awesomesauce. Because it was!

I know that I mostly stand alone, when I say that summer is my fave fashion season. Most people prefer fall with its abundant layering possibilities, but for me, especially in mostly fall-less Toronto, summer clothes rule! Which is why, although I loved last season’s Technicolor neoprene coats (which should be available this month btw), my fave Joe Fresh collection to date is Spring-Summer 2012.

So what caught my eye? Almost everything. But especially the honeymoon-appropriate breezy dresses (which I sincerely hope will be available come May – fingers crossed), the fancy pants that I so dearly love, classic black and white essentials with a twist (leather collared white shirt, anyone?), and fun menswear pieces.

Come to think of it, those printed menswear pants and blazers were so damn good, that I actually wish that they’d made similar versions for the ladies. But given the great womenswear selection, I’m not one to complain. I’ll happily take those green and blue printed pants instead, thankyouverymuch.

Overall, I loved the Joe Fresh Spring 2012 collection! Lots of fun pieces to dream about all through this cold and dreary season. And at Joe Fresh prices? You know you’ll be able to buy it all. Off the runway, and into your closet, without having to take out a second mortgage. And that, my friends, is awesomesauce!

LG Fashion Week: Sears Attitude by Jay Manuel Spring 2012

My very first LGFW show of the season ended up being Attitude by Jay Manuel. Having skipped Day 1, I was really looking forward to hitting the tents, and soaking up the excitement and the buzz surrounding each show. And was there ever buzz for Jay’s Spring 2012 collection! There were rumours that Tyra Banks was planning an appearance, that ANTM model-wannabes were going to be strutting their stuff…there were rumours, but none of them were true.

Instead, we got to see a solid summer collection, full of covetable resortwear pieces, separates for the working girls (not those working girls), and lovely prints. Styled by the multi-talented George Antonopoulos, the show was cohesive, and actually a lot of fun (complete with dry ice, and a psychedelic runway). And though I wasn’t a fan of Jay’s Fall 2011 effort, this collection had me ooh-ing, and aah-ing (and making wishlists) all through the show. Printed pieces had me at hello, as did the pink pants (above), and the sleek trenches. But the object of my desire this time around was definitely the printed jumpsuit (below)! I hope it looks as good on me, as it does on that leggy model.

So tell me, did you like Jay Manuel’s Spring 2012 collection? Share in the comments.

Toronto Fashion Week: Greta Constantine Spring 2012 Collection

It feels like just yesterday, I was excitedly waiting for the Greta Constantine Spring 2012 show to start (fashionably late, of course), anticipating the next slew of gorgeous frocks that I will be sure to covet. Was it worth the wait? Most definitely!

So what should you anticipate next spring? Vivid jewel tones, moody greys, blacks, and whites, as well as the designers’ signature draping, ruching, Grecian silhouettes…and leather! Surprisingly for me, although I really liked the colorful jersey dresses, the ones that stood out this time, were the simpler monochromatic pieces. Wrapped in those gorgeous leather vests, skirts, and shrugs, you get what I can only describe as urban warrior princess’ uniform. A mix of fierceness, and vulnerability.

As always, Kirk and Stephen did not disappoint, and showcased a beautiful, wearable collection, for a modern woman. And this modern woman would like one of each, please and thank you.

What do you think of Greta Constantine Spring 2012 collection? Is it something you’d love to wear? Let me know in the comments.

Oscar de la Renta at The Bay

There is only a handful of iconic designers that I would be psyched (read: freak out) to meet, and Oscar de la Renta is undeniably one of them. When word got out that de la Renta will be signing autographs at The Bay for the launch of his new perfume Live in Love, I hyperventilated for a moment, and then promptly ran to The Bay Queen Street on my lunch break to meet the charming designer.

At the event, de la Renta gave a quick interview to Jeanne Beker, revealing that he is a much better designer than he was 30 years ago, now that he knows so much more about life, and his craft, just as a woman can be more beautiful as she gets older and wiser. And what is beauty, according to Oscar de la Renta? “Real beauty is not what you project with your physique, but what you project with your mind.” What a lovely message, non?

When it was time for autographs, Oscar actually took the time to talk to each person in line, as well as take a photo with those that wanted one (that would be me!) - never rushing, always smiling. In today’s world full of celebrated reality TV plastic idols idiots, it is a rare treat to meet someone as truly talented, intelligent, and…sigh…charming as Oscar de la Renta - a true gentleman, and a fashion icon. Crossing this one off my bucket list.

Have you tried Live in Love yet? What did you think? Let me know in the comments.

Live in Love, Oscar de la Renta’s newest fragrance “for women, created by a man who adores them” has a light floral scent, with top notes of hyacinth, galbanum, bergamot, lily-of-the-valley and orchid, and is available in Canada exclusively at The Bay.

Halloween 2011: Toronto Fashion Heroes

Year after year, I complain until my friends’ ears bleed about the crappy polyester slutty (insert a profession/object here) costumes that invade the streets of Toronto on Halloween. And this year is no different. I am sure the parties and clubs will be full of nurses, cops, flight attendants, etc. in cheap flammable outfits, and once again I will be wearing something that I pulled out of my own closet.

This year, I wanted to wear a costume that had something to do with fashion…avoiding the usual cliches of donning the ”Anna” wig, the ”Audrey” LBD, or something else equally predictable. And then, last weekend, while browsing the Halloween section at the Blue Banana, the inspiration came…in shape of a fake beard. My mind immediately went to the now infamous Toronto Life editor – Kevin Naulls. “Why hasn’t anyone else thought of dressing up as Toronto fashion notables?” – I thought. This city is full of vibrant characters equally as intriguing as Mr Lagerfeld, and Ms Wintour…or at least interesting enough to the Toronto folks. And so this post was born.

If you’re not from Toronto, you might not be familiar with some of the people below…but I am sure you can conjure up costumes of your local fashion superstars too. All it takes is a little imagination.

1. Jeanne Beker – Fashion Television Host

Is there a person more recognizable in Canadian fashion than Jeanne Beker? I don’t think so. Jeanne Beker is an institution. And as such, she’s an easy target for Halloween costuming (is that a word?). Her costume is actually super easy to put together. If you aren’t blessed with a dark brown mane like Jeanne’s, pick up a wig with her signature blunt bangs. Grab a black shift dress (perhaps from her EDIT collection at The Bay?), cinch it with a cool belt (she wears one with a dinosaur buckle), pair with sky-high black pumps, grab a mic, and you’re ready to go find yourself in fashion!

2. Kevin Naulls – Toronto Life Online Editor

Main source of inspiration for this post, and a man that makes socialites tremble with fear and/or anger at his sometimes cutting, always hillarious photo captions. All you need to be Mr Naulls for a night is a good fake beard, something plaid (shirt, trench, scarf – use your imagination, people!), fun socks that he’s often spotted wearing, and a copy of Toronto Life in hand. Kevin, is that you?

3. Anita Clarke – Blogger

Bloggers are a huge trend, they say…and a trend that won’t be going away any time soon (we hope). And what blogger is more fun to emulate than Anita? My favorite (and most Halloween-appropriate) look of Anita’s of late was her fab Mark Fast jumpsuit – part catwoman, part fashion superhero, if you’ve got the body to rock it, then, I say, go for it! Don’t forget an awesome pair of shades, and a pair of Dean Davidson earrings to complete the look. Meow!

4. Sarah Nicole Prickett – Writer

SNP’s raw and insightful writing is the reason we tune in to her personal blog week after week. But it’s her killer style that makes us think she’d be so fun to wear for Halloween (err…not literally, of course). If imitation is a sincerest form of flattery, flatter her by wearing a rad pair of wedges (straps, peep toes, stripes…), tee off your boyfriend’s back, leather skirt layered over another skirt, and a swipe of red lipstick.

Finish the look with a tousled blonde wig (that you can trim to make it look slightly uneven). Use pink (or purple) highlighter to give the wig some fun highlights. And though we’ve seen SNP smile many a time, your costume won’t be complete without her signature smirk.

5. Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong – Designers of Greta Constantine

We see this designer duo everywhere! At industry parties, product launches…and of course, at their very own fashion shows. And their unmistakable style makes them perfect costume material! If you are looking to dress up with a friend – this is a great costume idea for you! Both Kirk and Stephen wear a lot of their own designs, so definitely go for something flowy and layered, in shades of black, white, and grey (leather shorts for Kirk, sweat pants for Stephen). Wear a pair of aviator glasses as Stephen, and thick black rims as Kirk. For Kirk’s outfit, you might want to find a paperboy hat similar to the ones he likes to wear, and for Stephen’s topper, choose a trucker hat, or just wear your hair in a knot on top of your head.

Hope you enjoyed this costume post. What other Canadian celebs Halloween costumes would you like to see? Share in the comments!

Banana Republic Yorkdale New Concept Store Opening

Last week, I attended the opening of Banana Republic’s concept store at Yorkdale. First of all, the store is huge! If you are trying to find a particular Banana Republic piece, then this store is your best bet. But apart from the sheer enormity of the shopping space (seriously, it’s 13,855 square feet!), I fell in love with the new layout.

With a circular plaza in the middle of all the action, and small, boutique-like shops within a shop for Petites, Heritage and Monogram collections all around me, I found myself forgetting that I was still at Yorkdale. It just didn’t have that mall feeling to me.

“The new Banana Republic Yorkdale will house the full range of men’s and women’s product including the Monogram and Heritage collections, and a full assortment of accessories: jewellery, handbags, shoes, eyewear, and small leather goods. It’s a 360-degree personalized experience that’s all about ease, featuring skilled stylists that can help you interpret the latest trends and elevate your wardrobe basics, while acting as a trusted editor to help you dress for the big and small moments of your life.”

If you still haven’t stopped by the new Banana Republic Yorkdale shop, make sure to pay a visit soon. But for now, check out the photos from the opening below!

Don’t Miss This Month: Beautylicious

Beautylicious in Yorkville
October 27 – November 6th, 2011

Third annual Beautylicious event will take place in Yorkville this month, until November 6th. With top salons, spas, and wellness studios participating, you can get some kick-ass deals on spa treatments, haircuts, you name it!

This year’s price points are $30, $50, $75, and $125. Some of the hottest treatments this year include Three Zumba Fitness classes from Izzy Fitness for $30, a Shellac manicure from Sitamaa Spa for $50, a Liquid Gold Anti-Aging Facial from Esthetics of Lara for $75 and an Eyelash Extension from the Mync Lash Lounge and Brow Bar for $125. It’s an awesome way to check out high-end services without having to pay high-end prices.

I got a chance to preview two services for myself: a haircut from Greg May Hair Architects, and a 60-minute facial from Pure + Simple. I will be doing a more extensive review of both, but for now, I just want to tell you that I loved both! You can see what my hair looked like after Greg did his magic here. Pretty amazing, right? And since he applied the “protein shake” to my mane, my hair has been so glossy and smooth. The level of service at Greg May Hair Architects is top-notch…and you might even get a free sushi lunch out of it too!

The Pure + Simple facial (save for the extractions) was one of the most relaxing experiences ever! Seriously, it included a massage, a mask, and an electric-zapping thingamajig, to make sure that all of the bacteria was dead. In short…it was awesome!

If you’re a beauty junkie, or just need a good haircut, make sure to check out Beautylicious…there are SO many salons to choose from, and prices are a dream. Go forth, and beautify!

Tiffany Leather Collection Preview in Toronto

It’s not every day that we get invited to have Breakfast at Tiffany…like, for real! So when I received an invitation to grab a morning bite and take a look at the Tiffany Leather Collection at the posh Bloor St. location, I pretty much squeeled like a little kid. Can you blame me?

When I arrived, bright and early, I got to meet the men behind the collection – Richard Lambertson and John Truex. As design directors of the Tiffany Leather Collection, Richard and John had a lot to share about the pieces they helped design and develop. And their passion for Tiffany handbags and accessories was definitely contagious!

The Fall 2011 collection is chock full of gorgeous (and seriously well-made) totes, bags, clutches, and small leather accessories. One piece that captured everyone’s attention was definitely the Tiffany Reversible Tote (below), with rock-n-roll metallic (or Tiffany Blue) lining, this tote is literally two purses in one. No need to switch bags, or spend double the money.

My favorite bag from the preview, however, was definitely the Tiffany Avenue Shopper (below) in leopard haircalf with Tiffany Blue leather trim – nice and roomy, with an unexpected pop of color – this is a dream bag for me. Just perfect.

Not surprisingly, Tiffany Blue accents were consistently present throughout the collection. Be it lining, or hardware accents – each bag had Tiffany written all over it (don’t worry, not literally!), and it was a really nice surprise to discover these subtle details.

This was my first introduction to Tiffany Leather Collection, and from what I’ve seen so far, I am really impressed. With prices ranging from $50 to $17,500, anyone can find a piece suited for their taste and budget…especially with the holidays coming up.

What do you think of the Fall 2011 offerings? Let me know in the comments.

TIFF 2011: Swarovski Fashion Suite

Ahh, TIFF! Celebs in town, gifting lounges all over the place, and parties, parties, oh, and did I mention PARTIES? Yes, Toronto is the place to be during the first two weeks of September – there’s no doubt about it!

Last week, I met up with my blogger/real-life friend Monica to check out the Swarovski Fashion Suite at the Four Seasons Toronto. Not knowing what to expect, I was stunned by the one-of-a-kind pieces displayed.

Making its one and only Canadian appearance, was the handcrafted Daniel Swarovski Catwalk Collection, which included both clothing and accessories – all of which looked both stunning and unique, adorned with crystals, feathers, sequins, and leather…oh my!

And though, only real stars got shiny baubles to wear on TIFF red carpets, checking out the swanky lounge and oggling the priceless pieces (seriously, these are not for sale) was fun enough for us. Though I would definitely not complain if I had something this glam to wear to TIFF parties!

Finally: J.Crew in Canada!

If you encountered unexpected levels of traffic on your way to Yorkdale, J.Crew might be to blame. First Canadian store of the preppy US retailer opened earlier this month to much excitement from the shopaholics (myself included).

At the launch of the store, I witnessed the coolest pieces fly off the shelves (don’t worry, they restock) faster than you can say “twin-set”. The store itself is really fun – bright and spacious, with stylish (and helpful) sales associates decked out in J.Crew from head to toe, not to mention the great selection of womenswear, from my fave Cafe Capris, to cashmere sweaters in all colors of the rainbow, to a ton of pretty shoes and accessories. J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler and President Jenna Lyons mingled with attendees, with Jenna dressed up in her signature stripes, and sequins – the look she’d perfected.

As for me, I made a mental checklist of my J.Crew must-haves, that I could come back to try on once the craziness dies down a bit. They include beautiful cropped floral pants, as well as the cropped pants on every guest’s list – in loud fuschia or bold orange – perfect for a night out, yet demure enough to wear at the office. Another item on my list is a pair of lace-up boots in camel leather – a pair that will go perfectly with skirts, jeans, dresses, pants (bathing suits even?) this fall. Last, but not least, I am hoping that the classic J.Crew trench looks as good on me as it does on a mannequin – I need a new one this season, and the one at the store looks pretty damn perfect.

If you still haven’t stopped by the store, and are looking to update your wardrobe for the Back To School Work season, now is the time. See you there?
