Stylish Staples: Striped Top

Welcome to our new segment – Stylish Staples! After discovering that I only wear like 20% of my wardrobe ALL.THE.TIME., I’ve decided to see what makes those items such staples. And well, unsurprisingly, I wear them so often, because they are stylish, and easy to wear with other items in my closet.

Each week, I’ll share one Stylish Staple of mine, showcase how other stylish bloggers wear those staples in their everyday lives, and perhaps help you enhance your wardrobe along the way. If you have staple suggestions, or would like to be featured, please shoot me an email.

This week’s staple is (perhaps predictably) a striped top. I own dozens of striped tops, mostly in a classic Breton stripe, and literally wear them at least once a week. Striped tops can be worn with almost anything to (almost) any occasion. A simple striped top adds some flare to a basic outfit, and amps up your chicness quotient.

Wear your striped top to the office like Kristy, by pairing it with a pencil skirt, some grown-up pumps, and a trench coat. Rock it on the weekend, a la Liz, by doing your best Audrey Hepburn impression in a pair of cropped trousers, and some lovely flats. Or show off your sexy side like Sharon, by pairing your demure stripes with a killer necklace, and some short shorts. Just like a Little Black Dress is a must-have for every woman out there, a striped top should be too!

Are you a lover of stripes? How do you wear them? Share in the comments.

Nelia’s top – H&M; Kristy’s top – H&M; Liz’s top – Club Monaco; Sharon’s top – Zara

Style Fille: Diane Kruger in Derek Lam

Every time I see a new batch of Diane Kruger’s photos, I expect to be blown away…I guess most of the time, her steeze is right up my alley, so it happens a lot. Well, she certainly does not disappoint this time around. I simply adore her 10 Crosby Derek Lam skirt over dress outfit – the colors, the stripes, the floral print – it all works for me, and makes me want to mug her in some dark alley. Not for her money, silly! All I want is her clothes…and shoes! And though we can’t credit her with putting together this outfit per say (after all, that’s the way it was always meant to be worn), I still give her props for going with simple hair and makeup, and pairing the dress/skirt with those hot yellow heels.

What do you think of Diane’s eclectic look? Would you ever wear a skirt over a dress? Let me know in the comments.

What I Wore: Back to Basics

This past weekend I had to go in to the office and work, which naturally translated into comfy outfits with little to no thought involved. Sorry if this is kinda boring, but to me, a striped tee paired with denim is always a “do”…and an easy one at that. Which is why all of my striped tees are now looking a little mangy and tired for my liking. Time for a new batch, I say.

Apart from my stripe-obsession, there are a few other pieces that I always seem to be wearing, which is also why I will be doing a new segment on Style Blog – called Stylish Staples, starting next week. This segment will showcase some of my most beloved wardrobe essentials, and how I (and my fave bloggers) wear those pieces. For now, I’d like to ask you, my lovelies, what are your fave Stylish Staples? Share in the comments.

What I Wore: Striped

 4 things:

1. Happy Chinese New Year!

2. Yes, I am wearing the furry vest again. No, I don’t need an intervention.

3. This is what I wore to a mom-date this weekend…one where my mom made me yummy Russian food, and I had to roll myself home afterwards.

4. Is the weekend really over already? *cries, hides in the corner*

Style Fille: Miranda Kerr

What is it about a combination of leather and stripes that gets me every time? It always looks chic and fresh to me, no matter how many times I might’ve seen it already. This Balenciaga leather jacket on Miranda Kerr in particular is so stunning, but so out of budget, that it’s making me shaky with frustration trying to find a similar one online…so far without much luck.

What do you think of Miranda’s look? Share in the comments.

What I Wore: Like a Lady

Wore this outfit to Media Profile’s Holiday Party (which was a blast!), and was really happy that I didn’t end up wearing a dress, like I planned. Because even in jeans and sweater – I was freezing! But all the goose bumps aside, I’m seriously loving my new Old Navy sweater – it’s so lady-like and proper, which isn’t exactly me, but as soon as I saw that it came in yellow stripes – I just couldn’t resist. Throw it together with some flared jeans, and the looks becomes less ladylike, and more…me. You like?

Style Fille: Viviana Volpicella

Speaking of all things Prada, here’s a pic of Vogue Nippon’s Viviana Volpicella rocking stripes like it ain’t no thang. She’s been one of my fave Style Filles for a while now, mainly because of her contagious smile and her love for bright and colorful fashions. In that regard, Spring 2011 Prada collection is seriously up her alley. How I wish my budget allowed me to add a few Prada dresses to my closet. One day…one sweet day.

Do you like Viviana’s look? Or are you over stripes? Let me know in the comments.

What I Wore: The Fog

Past weekend, the fog descended upon downtown Toronto, and it felt really weird. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Toronto so gloomy and dark. Perfect weather for Halloween – just one week too early. Spent the entire weekend hiding from the rain: at Buca (so good…SO SO GOOD!), at the movies (Hereafter), with my nephew (aka the most adorable baby ever), at Wal-Mart (shopping for my Halloween party this week), and at various parking garages (aka perfect photo-op location). Finally dusted off my kicking boots, you might see them more often in the coming weeks.

How was your weekend? Have you made the switch from summer to fall in your closet yet? I’m still dreading it…but I have just started. Happy Monday, lovelies!

What I Wore: The Baby-Sitters Club

Apparently, babies really like bulky necklaces. And if they get a chance to grab one, they won’t be likely to let go until it’s either off or pried out of their little hands. Same goes with hair. I’ve been learning so much about babies lately, thanks to my little baby nephew and our endless conversations, that consist mostly of “blah blah”, “goo goo”, and lots of funny faces.

Before I met him, I never really was a “baby person”, but I just cannot help but turn into mush every time I see him. I wore this outfit last week to babysit him, and ended up coming home with milk stains on my shirt, and drool on my necklace. Next time, I’m going to wear something printed to camouflage the imprints of his teeny fingers.

What I Wore: Striped Shirt, Denim Shirt – H&M; Jeans – Gap; Shoes – Steve Madden; Necklace, Bag, Cube Ring - Forever21; Sunglasses – Ray Ban; Belt, Ball Ring – The Bay

What I Wore: On Top Of The World

I absolutely LOVE weekend brunch! Which could be one of the reasons why I’m in such a dire need of hitting the gym lately. Last Saturday, my girlfriends and I checked out a new brunch spot on Church St. that served yummy Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast…ahhh…so good (Foodie post is coming soon)! And after the gluttonous, but oh-so-delicious get-together, shopping was in order. So Al and I hit up a few shops for some shoes and office clothing (yeah, we like to live on the edge!). I’d say that shopping was a success, with 2 pairs of Aldo shoes in the bag, some Sephora goodies, a Jacob dress, and a couple of small canvases to paint something for my newborn nephew – probably a baby Tigger!

The weather was somewhat cool, and that was probably why I kept getting hot and cold throughout the day, having to take off my coat, only to put it back on in a few minutes. And now, I am rewarded with a major pain in the butt cold! Well, not literally pain in the butt…more like pain in the throat, head, eyeballs, chest, and everywhere else, including hair! I love spring as much as the next person, but this flip-floping has got to stop! Sounding like a man really doesn’t work well for me. Happy Tuesday, from my couch!

I Wore: Denim Shorts, Striped Shirt, Tights, Scarf, Shoes – H&M; Leopard Coat, Boyfriend Blazer – Zara; Bracelet – The Bay; Earrings – Chanel

What I Wore: In The Navy

The moment I saw this H&M blazer, I thought of Emmanuelle Alt’s Balmain ensemble. So, I guess I’ll call this an homage to the lovely Fashion Director of Vogue Paris. Not quite Balmain, but for $20, I don’t think there’s much room for comparison. I believe the H&M promotion ($15 off any blazer or jacket) is still on, so go ahead and check out their selection for yourselves!

PS. Yes, I am wearing stripes again. Just so you know, I have about 10 of them in regular rotation. It’s an addiction, don’t make fun.

I Wore: Blazer, Top – H&M; Denim Leggings, Lip Earrings - Forever 21; Leopard Ring – The Bay

Organic Style: Balenciaga

Ahh, Jo! Why must you tempt me with your eagle eye for fashion finds and awesome splurges? Isn’t her new Balenciaga to cry for? The color…ahhh, the color is so bright and brilliant, like a little piece of cobalt sunshine in an otherwise dreary day. The picture does not do it justice. I was going to post a photo of Jo and I side by side, since we both wore striped shirts that day, but I will let you focus on the beautiful bag instead. Supple, supple leather heaven.

Zara Lookbook February 2010

Have been meaning to post this Zara lookbook since, well, February. But due to unforeseen circumstances (laziness), posting photos now.

There are a few pieces that I love (the above trench, the Givenchy-esque blazer, the striped shirts), but in general, this lookbook left me slightly underwhelmed. Here’s hoping that March 2010 photos will have more bang.

More photos after the jump!

What I’m Wearing: Havana

It was a relatively cold day for Cuba. Maybe under 20 degrees Celsius! Plus cloudy, windy, etc. So I really had to hold on to my hat for most of our day in Havana to prevent it from flying away. But my new H&M Men’s tee was perfect for such a day. Long sleeves that roll up, yet with enough volume not to be too hot when it got sunny. Plus it’s…that’s right…it’s striped! I know, I know…I need help.

And the shoes…I really don’t get it. I’ve worn these sandals in Rome, Paris, Sorrento, Mexico, Toronto…everywhere…and they’ve always been nothing but comfortable! Yet this time around, I had to stop a few times, just to let my blisters feet get some rest. What gives? Is it time to throw these babies out? I don’t think I am ready yet.

I am wearing: Shirt, Hat - H&M Men; Shorts – Forever21; Bag – Old Navy; Sandals – Zara; Sunglasses – Ray-Ban; Bracelet – Iberostar Laguna Azul

All Canadian

Being Canadian is really de rigueur nowadays. It’s incredible what a little marketing can do. The Vancouver Olympics, of course, have a lot to do with it. But, credit should be given to HBC for really marketing the crap out of their Canadiana apparel. From Wayne Gretzky and Glee guys, to it-girl Rachel Bilson – The Bay clothes are all over celebs and athletes, and are selling out in stores everywhere! Over 3 million pairs of red mittens were sold to date…and still going.

As for this Smythe HBC blanket coat – I do love this coat on Rachel. Such fun colors and so very Canadian. Hmm, perhaps the All-Canadian look will catch on in the rest of the world soon enough? Until then…Go, Canada, go!
