Style Fille: Miroslava Duma

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Miroslava Duma in chic pregnancy clothing! I’ve been seeing a lot of mommies-to-be around the financial district lately, and even a friend of mine is currently expecting a little bundle of joy. And since looking stylish, while sporting a bump isn’t always easy, I thought that I’d share some photos of the always inspiring Russian It-girl Miroslava with you. Mainly because she’s my friend’s favorite style icon, and also because most of her looks are quite easy to borrow. You don’t have to sacrifice style, just because you’ve got extra padding on your body…the way I see it, you get to eat for two, why not have double the style?

What I Wore: So High

Aren’t they beautiful? And the best part is that I got them on sale for only…brace yourselves…$20! Now that’s an amazing deal I couldn’t resist. I’ve actually gone a little shoe-crazy last month, and ended up with a few extra pairs of shoes in my closet. And an added bonus to this pair is that le boyfriend doesn’t actually hate them! High Five! Very nice!

Ok, so I’ve been pretty terrible at updating Style Blog lately, but I promise that I have some exciting content coming up. It’s just that I am trying to enjoy every single waking minute of sunshine right now, so scheduling posts in the evenings took a bit of a back seat to hanging out with my newborn nephew, rollerblading, going out for ice-cream, and other not-so-important, yet crucial to me activities. Apologies all around, but thanks to all of you that emailed me about the sporadic posting. I am not sick (not that I know of), and neither am I away. Sorry, lovelies! Hope you’re enjoying your summer as well!

What I Wore: Bad Day

Last weekend, amid the G20 craziness, le boyfriend and I finally made a trek to Yonge and Sheppard to see my “Yorkdale Is Me” billboard! After a few minutes of silly picture-taking and attempting to climb up on the roof of the building in heels (me, not le boyfriend), which was unfortunately locked, we ended up spending the day wandering aimlessly around the Lawrence Park area, stopping by Sporting Life to check out their sale, and finally sampling Capocaccia (foodie post coming soon).

All in all a great day…especially compared to the day before that, when I hit a parking lot pillar, almost killed myself while hanging wallpaper and shopping at IKEA (hint to self: don’t attempt to drag a super heavy shelving unit across the driveway – it will inevitably result in busted up toes and scratched up, yet brand new piece of furniture).

Thankfully, there were kind souls that helped me along the way, and made my day a bit brighter. Like the guys at the auto shop, who instead of taking advantage of clueless me, helped me with the dent, offered advice and manual labor…all without any monetary expectations (I still paid them, of course). Also, huge thanks goes out to the random guy at the IKEA parking lot, who after seeing me wheel a huge shelving unit over to my car, did not hesitate to offer his help, which was hugely appreciated. And last, but not least, I am really thankful for the assitance of my almost-neighbor, who helped me get the aforementioned piece of furniture into my house, after seeing me helplessly fighting with and flailing around the careening shelf, which clearly was out for blood (ouch!).

What last weekend taught me (other than not to go furniture shopping alone, and to watch out for parking lot pillars), is that the world isn’t such a hostile place afterall…there are still people out there who will lend a helping hand to a stranger in need, without expecting anything in return. And that’s a pretty awesome thing to realize.

What I Wore: Quebec City Part 3

Great breakfast at Cosmos to start the day. A leisurely stroll around the Plains of Abraham. A dozen of macarons from Paillard. A scary encounter with a tunnel monster. An unexpected Porter sandwich on our way back to Toronto (on top of an incredibly above and beyond flight service).

A fantastic end to a fun trip to Quebec City.

What I Wore: Quebec City Part 2

After a day of shopping and eating in Quebec City, and falling on the bed half-conscious and half-incapacitated, getting ready to go out in the evening was a bit of a challenge, but I think we did ok. I finally got to wear my new H&M Fashion Against AIDS Missoni-inspired tank top dress. It’s definitely on a shorter side, and used to be quite see-through, before I’d attached my old white t-shirt as lining at the bottom, but I simply loved the color and the pattern of this tank! Surely, I’ll get lots and lots of use out of it on steamy summer nights, running barefoot on the beach…and did I mention that it cost me $15?!

Though I do question how lucky this particular dress is, because after getting a table at Savini on Grande Allée, some lady promptly managed to spill my drink all over my dress. Thankfully, the fabric didn’t stain and dried pretty fast (except for the t-shirt lining part). I didn’t let this little mishap ruin our night, and we ended up having an incredibly delicious meal, before heading to the hotel to get some rest for the next day.

What I Wore: Quebec City Part 1

Despite some mishaps and problematic planning, my birthday extravaganza (coined by le boyfriend) away from my friends for the first time, was a success. After a long-ish work-week, I was whisked away on a Porter plane to the faraway land of castles, small winding streets, horse carriages, and fab food – Quebec City.

Almost immediately after stepping foot into Old Quebec, I found myself staring at a Longchamp bag I’ve wanted for a while, yet have never been able to find (even in Paris…three times!). Well, as luck had it, the store did carry the version I’ve been lusting after, and I snatched it up without hesitation. Good start to the trip, right?

I also got to wear my H&M Fashion Against AIDS dress for the first time. Was supposed to wear it to Al’s birthday BBQ, but since we ended up missing it, I wore it in Quebec instead…to le boyfriend’s disappointment (he hates any type of leopard print).

The rest of the day was spent eating (Le Lapin Sauté), walking around and sightseeing, and drinking Blanche De Chambly, which is le boyfriend’s favoritest beer. The weather, thankfully, was quite perfect for a day of discovering Quebec city’s markets, streets, and patios. And since this was my first time in the city, my poor feet did not get much rest at all. But I guess, this is good practice for our next trip to Europe.

What I Wore: A-Maze-ing

Ever since my nephew was born, I’ve been discovering more and more of High Park with every walk we go on. This time, my cousin and I found a Wonderland-esque maze in the middle of High Park! All it was missing was a couple of rose bushes for the card-guards to paint a different color!

I really adore our little walks…though sometimes they aren’t so “little”…at times we end up walking for hours, making it to Lakeshore, and taking a nice stroll down by the lake, while my baby nephew peacefully snoozes in his stroller.

It’s because of him, I have a new shopping addiction – baby clothes! I think I’ve been spending more time in H&M’s baby section, than anywhere else in the store. Who knew that H&M had such adorable baby clothes?! Unfortunately, I am not allowed to post any photos of my nephew…otherwise he’d get his own “What He Wore” section on this blog – he is one stylish baby!

Pardon my legs in this picture…I am a klutz and running into furniture is something I do on a daily basis, hence the bruises. Also, somehow most of my outfit that day came from Forever 21, and not from H&M, which might just be a first. Oh, and these photos were taken a week or so ago, hence the nice weather. Hope you have a happy and sunny weekend wherever you are!

P.S. Love, love, love H&M’s new line of nail polish! The only gripe I have is that this color is called “Bella’s Choice”…really, H&M? Did you really have to go there?

P.P.S. My list of obsessions should also include turquoise…too much?

What I Wore: So Dries

I don’t usually copy off the runway looks, but in this instance, I just had to! The jacket I’m wearing was an absolute steal and a gem, found in the depths of second-hand re-seller Buffalo Exchange in Houston. I bought it back in January for $15! The beading is terrific and it’s still in fantastic condition! It is, of course, a very “old lady-ish” item, but I love it nonetheless!

So when I saw photos from Dries Van Noten Spring 2010 show, I knew I had to recreate the look below! Well, sans the sunglasses and a necklace – I had to look somewhat appropriate for work – I do still have a day job! And I can say that after the last outing,  my Van Noten doppelganger will definitely be getting more use!

PS. Sorry for the bitchface in the last photo…it’s the only full-length pic, so I had to include it.

Club Monaco + Garance Doré Fall 2010 Lookbook

Absolutely adore this Garance Doré for Club Monaco lookbook. Her style of photography is quite distinct, no? You can tell just by looking at the photographs that it’s Garance’s work! And with Scott Schuman shooting Burberry campaign, among others, this power-duo really is taking the fashion world by a storm. Good for them!

As for the above pic, it really reminded me of this one…well, not the outfit so much, but the hairstyle and the general feel of it. What do you think?

More Club Monaco lookbook photos available here…and below are my fave Club Monaco/Garance Doré Q&A parts!

CM As a photographer what is it that fascinates you about street fashion?
GD It’s a great way to discover personalities, it’s a different way to live fashion than through
the magazine fashion stories, which are more an ideal (and which I love). It’s a great way to be
inspired and to find your own style.

CM Define Chic.
GD Real chic is something you have even when you are naked. It’s a mix of intelligence,
kindness, grace and pride. It’s a politeness to other people to look good…

What I Wore: Miami Vice

I cannot say this enough – I love sunny days! Even on weekdays, when I am cooped up indoors for the majority of the day, it still puts a smile on my face! Last Friday, as I walked outside to grab lunch with a couple of friends at TD Towers, the streets were packed with pedestrians, the flowers were in full bloom, and the sun was shining brightly. There’s absolutely nothing that could make me grumpy or sad on days like that. Let the sunshine in!

This outfit reminds me of Miami Vice because of the t-shirt, the white jeans, and the big-shouldered blazer – don’t I look like a female version of Don Johnson? Especially in my new H&M leopard print sunglasses! Love them so much! Oh, and almost forgot…did you spot my new baby? I think it’s one of those forever loves…I can just feel it! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend…and Happy Monday!

H&M Eaton Centre Grand Re-Opening

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you might know that I’m a bit of an H&M junkie. I am in that store at least once a week to get some cheap and chic thrills, and so far the store has never failed me in my shopping adventures. Well, imagine my delight, when I received my very own invite to the re-opening of the Toronto Eaton Centre’s H&M location in the mail! Drinks, food, and 25% off clothes? I am so there! The flagship store has been renovated and given a facelift, switching a few things up for shoppers’ benefit and introducing a sleeker design. The darker walls create a more chic atmosphere, but the layout so far is a bit of hit and miss for me. Womenswear floors that have always been separated by the Children’s department are still kept apart, but now it’s by Men’s clothes.

Speaking of the Menswear floor – I loved the new layout there. Loved the Persian-esque rugs, the darker vibe. Very sleek, very cool. Loved it! Children’s department is also quite sprawling and easy to navigate (got the most adorable onesie for my nephew – it’s a Tigger and it’s striped…like auntie, like nephew). The fitting rooms on the lowest floor are a bit tough to find, but once you’re there, there are now more rooms available than before the reno. Huge plus!

The store was packed to the brim with shoppers both on April 28th, and 29th, which made it a bit more difficult to gauge the new collections, but I did manage to spot some cool garb and stylish people! The below bolero has been on many fashionista’s lists ever since it popped up in the H&M magazine. Well I’ve seen a few of them available, so if you’re still waiting…head on over before it’s gone. I also loved the punchy jewelry, the pretty clutches, the funky sunglasses (got a leopard print pair for fun). The basics section seems to have been expanded, and the lingerie section still has its separate room, alas smaller than before and cut in two by the snaking fitting room lineups.

Whatever the changes may be, the store does look better esthetically, but we’ll just have to shop and see whether the layout will be a pain or a gain for this location. I honestly did not see any problems with the old layout, but I will try to embrace the new. What are you thoughts on the new/old Eaton Centre H&M? Which location is your favorite to shop at? Share in the comments!

What I Wore: Cherry Blossom Girl

Thank goodness, le boyfriend and I ended up at High Park two weeks ago! Had we waited to this weekend, the cherry blossoms might’ve been gone completely due to the crappy weather we’ve been having. We missed the blossoms last year, and I was not about to miss them again!

After a quick stop at King Slice on Bloor St for some really delicious pizza*, off to High Park we went. The trees were in bloom, the grass was covered with bodies and blankets, the choo-choo-train was full of kids and parents, and the dogs were running around, having the time of their lives. All is right with the world again now that spring is in the air. I actually climbed** a cherry tree for a photo, which was fun, until an elderly Asian lady tried to do the same without bending her legs…thankfully she didn’t get hurt…but we did get a laugh out of it.

As happy as that weekend at High Park was for me, I did get sick that day – with a cold that took me out of commission for a full week! Live and learn. Next year, I am wearing a sweater to watch the trees bloom and maybe a wrap blanket too, and I don’t care if the little kids make fun of me.

*If you live in Toronto and still haven’t tried King Slice – shame on you. Go on, and try not to like their pizza – impossible!

**I didn’t actually climb the tree, but was kind of sort of helped up by le boyfriend…same thing.

What I Wore: On Top Of The World

I absolutely LOVE weekend brunch! Which could be one of the reasons why I’m in such a dire need of hitting the gym lately. Last Saturday, my girlfriends and I checked out a new brunch spot on Church St. that served yummy Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast…ahhh…so good (Foodie post is coming soon)! And after the gluttonous, but oh-so-delicious get-together, shopping was in order. So Al and I hit up a few shops for some shoes and office clothing (yeah, we like to live on the edge!). I’d say that shopping was a success, with 2 pairs of Aldo shoes in the bag, some Sephora goodies, a Jacob dress, and a couple of small canvases to paint something for my newborn nephew – probably a baby Tigger!

The weather was somewhat cool, and that was probably why I kept getting hot and cold throughout the day, having to take off my coat, only to put it back on in a few minutes. And now, I am rewarded with a major pain in the butt cold! Well, not literally pain in the butt…more like pain in the throat, head, eyeballs, chest, and everywhere else, including hair! I love spring as much as the next person, but this flip-floping has got to stop! Sounding like a man really doesn’t work well for me. Happy Tuesday, from my couch!

What I Wore: Grandma Chic

Last week, in hope of finding High Park’s sakura trees in full bloom, le boyfriend and I set out on a little photo expedition. To our disappointment, however, the blossoms were nowhere to be found…one week too early. Oh well, we had a great day regardless! Sunny days make everyone so happy, including puppies, ducks and grown men. I was also excited to be wearing my new blue dress! Technically, it’s not at all special – it’s just Forever 21, but the thing is that my grandma used to have a dress that looked very similar to this one and it took me a while to actually snatch it up in my size (some techniques involved stalking the store’s hold section, and checking the website obsessively every few minutes).

So yeah, the dress is awesome! I also love the earrings…they are malachite and they actully belonged to my grandmother – only one of the few pieces of her jewelry that I was able to save. Nowadays, I wish my mom had kept more of my grandma’s things, so that instead of buying a “Made in China” dress to invoke memories of my beautiful grandmother, I could actually wear a piece from her own wardrobe. Le sigh. Do you have any special items in your closet that belonged to someone close to you? Share in the comments.
