Shopping: Forever 21 Miu Miu Lookalikes

Leave it to Forever 21 to plagiarize offer an affordable substitute to Miu Miu’s highly coveted (yet, highly unaffordable by many) Mary Jane platforms.  I’m pretty sure these will be gone before you can say “knock-off”, but for the quick and thrifty ones, these Posy Platforms are probably the answer to their fashion prayers. Will you be getting a pair of these for yourself? Let me know in the comments.

What I Wore: True Blue

Rainy weekend in Toronto – what better time to wear my new Vivienne Westwood x Melissa Lady Dragon shoes? Love them so much, but unfortunately, they are too small for my feet…and size up was too big! I think I’ll just have to keep them in their box to look at when I am feeling blue – those hearts would cheer me up in no time!

But I do wish, I could wear these shoes more often…they are just too cute! Oh well…maybe one day my feet would shrink magically? Anyone know a good foot diet?

I Wore: Shirt – Gap; Jeans – Urban Outfitters; Belt – Nine West; Sunglasses – H&M; Bag – Longchamp; Shoes – Vivienne Westwood for Melissa

STYLESENSE Stiletto Sprint 2010

Last year, STYLESENSE held Toronto’s very first Stiletto Sprint. It was a great event that I had the pleasure of participating in. If you weren’t there last year, I highly recommend that you try the sprint this year! All proceeds from registration fees will be donated to Look Good Feel Better, Canada’s only national charity that addresses the appearance related effects of all cancers affecting women. And you will have a chance to win some pretty great prizes! “The winner of the women’s final will receive a whopping $10,000 in cash (not to mention fame and glory)! Women’s second and third place will receive $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.” And if your man or guy friend is interested in supporting Look Good Feel Better, then he too can put on some stilettos and run like the wind (seriously, last year’s men’s race winner ran super fast) - the winner of the men’s final gets a prize of $1,000!

Date:

Friday, September 17, 2010

Time:

Registered participants to arrive at 6AM
Races take place between 6:45AM – 8:30AM

Location:

STYLESENSE, Heartland Town Centre, 5915 Rodeo Drive, Mississauga, Ontario

Registration Fee:

A minimum $25 donation to Look Good Feel Better. Plus, for every dollar you donate above $25, STYLESENSE will match it! (to a maximum of $20,000)

For shoe specs and registration, please go to www.stylesensestilettosprint.ca

For more photos from last year’s event, click here. If you do decide to join the sprint, make sure to send me some photos and let me know the results! Good luck!

What I Wore: In My Shoes

I wanted to show you the whole outfit, but unfortunately…the rest of the photos came out blurry and out of focus…and no, the photographer wasn’t drunk, and yes, I should’ve let him use flash…le sigh. But in any case, here are my new lovely shoes!

They were extremely comfy when I bought them (thanks to the stretchy elastic bands), but now, after a couple of wears, they are actually slightly painful (thanks to not-so-elastic bands over my toes). I have to make sure to break them in before my trip – otherwise, I might end up barefoot in Milan, and that’s not a look Italians would appreciate (derelicte is so out). So far, I bought some Dr. Scholl’s shoe tape, and it seems to work ok. But I might actually have to resort to more drastic measures…all in the name of fashion. If you have some shoe tips, send them over, I’m curious to see if there’s something else I could do (short of bringing a pair of flip-flops along).

Shopping: Balisi Shoes

I have a shocking confession to make…I have never shopped at Balisi. Scratch that…I have never shopped at Balisi until a couple of weeks ago. Why not? I guess I never knew that they carry such an awesome selection of cool and unique shoe styles. After searching high and low for a pair of Melissa x Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragon shoes, I (luckily) stumbled upon Balisi’s website, and promptly made my way over to their Queen Street location.

Not only was I pleasantly surprised by their extensive Melissa stock, but they also had non-rubber shoes galore! And, on top of that, the store was having a 40% off sale all weekend long. How cool is that? So not only was I able to satiate my plastic heart craving (it really is a sickness…help me?), but I got to drool over some really amazing pairs of shoes too. Not one to selfishly keep these beauties to myself, I thought I’d share some photos with you. All of these pairs (except for the creepy rat shoes) have tugged at my heart strings, but being a good girl that I am (yeah, right!), I walked away only with what I came for…not that it means that I won’t be making another trip to Balisi soon, because I will, as I’m definitely a convert…especially if they keep having these awesome sales…wink*wink*nudge*nudge.

PS. So these rat shoes definitely creeped me out. Totally the opposite of the cute Marc Jacobs “Mouse” flats, no? But still there was something very compelling about these, so I had to take a picture to share with you. Would you ever rock these or do they make your skin crawl?

Aldo Fall 2010 Preview

Ok, so as an avid sunshine-lover, I am dreading fall…I don’t even want to think about fall and anything that has to do with the summer ending. Having said that, as a fashion-lover, I am still somewhat on the lookout for some cool fall pieces to stock up on, before the said dreaded season knocks on my door. And the latest offerings from Aldo Shoes have me slightly excited about the colder weather and being able to wear these beauties. Actually, no, not exactly excited, although I guess slightly less horrified at the thought.

Converse Fall 2010 Collection Preview

What a bad blogger I have been! I really don’t have an excuse, other than…I’ve been horribly lazy. Umm…no, not lazy…busy…yeah, that’s it. Either way, sorry once again, and I will definitely try to bring my A-game for the remainder of the summer…”try” being the key word.

A couple of weeks ago, the lovelies over at MBCommunications invited me among the other fashion-loving set to attend the Fall 2010 preview of Converse aka Most Amazing Casual Shoes EVER. And though to me, nothing beats the boring  classic black and white Chucks, some shoes that I saw at the preview made me reconsider. There were shoes for every type of person out there: fun “Seuss” Chucks, slick Jack Purcells, glittery Converse for tweens, amazing band-inspired shoes, winter-boot Converse, and of course the good-old classic Chuck Taylors.

The thing that really got me excited was definitely the Dr. Seuss collection. Having a little nephew of my own, I cannot wait till he’s old enough to rock the adorable red high-tops. In the meantime, I guess I could get a pair for myself…don’t judge me, I’m still a huge kid at heart!

Some styles are already available at the Get Outside  store on Queen St., while others will be coming in throughout August/September. Make sure to call the store for availability. Now if only they carried Converse x Missoni collection too…perhaps next year?

What I Wore: So High

Aren’t they beautiful? And the best part is that I got them on sale for only…brace yourselves…$20! Now that’s an amazing deal I couldn’t resist. I’ve actually gone a little shoe-crazy last month, and ended up with a few extra pairs of shoes in my closet. And an added bonus to this pair is that le boyfriend doesn’t actually hate them! High Five! Very nice!

Ok, so I’ve been pretty terrible at updating Style Blog lately, but I promise that I have some exciting content coming up. It’s just that I am trying to enjoy every single waking minute of sunshine right now, so scheduling posts in the evenings took a bit of a back seat to hanging out with my newborn nephew, rollerblading, going out for ice-cream, and other not-so-important, yet crucial to me activities. Apologies all around, but thanks to all of you that emailed me about the sporadic posting. I am not sick (not that I know of), and neither am I away. Sorry, lovelies! Hope you’re enjoying your summer as well!

Wishlist: Dolce & Gabbana Face Wedges

From the Suede Kisses bag to Suede Faces shoes…I am obsessed. I should be growing out of these types of things, my taste and my style should be maturing as I get older, but instead, I find myself further drawn to silly, kitschy items like these Dolce & Gabbana face wedges. Is there no hope for me? Will I be a sixty-year old woman in a silly hat, wearing silly shoes and silly jewelry? Not sure yet, but stay tuned.

Friday Faux Pas: FitFlop Clog

Now if the clog trend wasn’t bad enough, now there’s a hybrid of flip-flops, clogs, and those hideous (and questionably effective) toning shoes available for all to buy. The only good thing about these is that it will only cost you $11 to look like a fool. And I do pity the fool who buys these “shoes”, and attempts to wear them in public. Do you?

PS. Oops, apparently, these clogs aren’t $11, they are $119! Now you’ll have to excuse me, while I laugh myself into a coma.

Summer Mansentials

It’s official – it is summer time in Canada! The sun is hot, the skin is in, and the patios are buzzing! But is your man ready for the heat? Judging by the many run-ins with style-handicapped guys I spotted this weekend at The Beach, many guys don’t get that you can be both comfortable and stylish during the summer. And while, I realize that most men would balk at the idea of making over their style, below are the three essential items, that I think every guy should have this summer! And yes, this includes le boyfriend.

1. Summer shorts

As the temperatures rise, the hemlines of ladies’ skirts keep going up, but what about the guys? I think it’s very important for guys to have at least one decent pair of shorts for the summer. Unfortunately, lots of men’s idea of decent shorts are sloppy, slouchy, ill-fitting, and at times plain ugly. Men’s shorts come in a variety of styles to fit different lifestyles, but in general the more pockets there are, the less streamlined, and therefore less flattering the shorts will look. Stores usually have an abundance of shorts and swim trunks at this time of the year, so your options are definitely not limited. So pick up a pair that you like for your man, and chances are he’ll grow to like them, and won’t look sloppy any more. I’ve also found this site, which also has some cool options from brands like G-Star.

2. Stylish kicks

Back when I lived in Houston, seeing a guy wearing flip-flops never induced any unpleasant feelings on my part. Here in Toronto, however, I am not a fan…unless we’re at the beach, at the pool, or at a BBQ that is. Converse have been my guy shoe of choice for a few years now, and with the canvas upper, I think they are pretty good shoes for the summer, as well as always in style. Though le boyfriend loves them as well, he did find the Lacoste sneakers much more comfortable. I love Lacoste shoes, especially since they have so many simple, yet stylish looks available…it’s easy to find one that would work for your man. And of course, the penny loafers look amazing with rolled up pants/jeans, in the summer…so very “Sartorialist meets Italian riviera”…but it takes a certain type of man to rock those. Though in the end, I think any of these beat sandals with socks, no?

3. Below the neck grooming

When Lisa of One Voice offered to send le boyfriend Philips Bodygroom Pro, I jumped at the chance. While he agreed to be my guinea pig (thanks, baby!), he didn’t fully realize what that would entail. Luckily for me, he isn’t as hairy as some men, but some shaving and trimming still goes a long way. Thankfully, nowadays, most men already realize that at least some body grooming is important below the neck…necessary, even. But with the beach season quickly approaching, and if your man is still hesitant to try it, perhaps you could sneak a Bodygroom unit into his bathroom one day as a hint. Le boyfriend did secretly like Philips Bodygroom Pro, not that he necessarily needs the shaving side, but the trimmer definitely came in handy! Plus, he was able to use it both in the shower and out. Now help your man take off that “sweater” and enjoy some sunshine! Bodygroom Pro is currently available at Bed Bath and Beyond in Canada, while Sears, HBC, and Personal Edge should be getting them sometime in July.

What other mansentials would you suggest for your guy? Share in the comments!

Wishlist: Aquatalia by Marvin K boots

Ughhh…This weather! I cannot stand the rain and the doom and the gloom every morning…especially on the weekends! What is the deal?

Once upon a time, however, I used to loooove the rain…jumping from puddle to puddle, and smelling the lovely wet asphalt…that was then, and now, I simply have no shoes to wear during the rainy weather! None. I’ve thought about getting a pair of Hunters, but I can’t help but imagine myself as a vet on her way to a stable to inspect a birthing horse ala James Herriot (lovely books by the way), or something…

Well, if I had a pair of Aquatalia by Marvin K Giggle boots in black, I definitely wouldn’t be as rain-shy! Loving the stylish, yet practical ankle boot design, and the slight heel. No farmer visions come to mind when I see these rubber not-wellies. And though the price tag is a tad steep ($260) for non-leather boots, depending on the fit of these babies, I think I might just get them. Because season after season, I assure myself that I don’t really need a pair of waterproof rubber shoes, and season after season the weather proves me wrong.

What are your thoughts on these? Hot or not?

Ugg Australia Fall 2010 Launch

When one is invited to an Ugg/Jimmy Choo Fall 2010 preview, one has to wonder what that would look like…a furry stiletto? Or perhaps a strappy Ugg? Hmm…not a winning combination in my head, but still, Al and I braved the Lakeshore rush-hour to be at Palais Royale for the launch.

First of all, I wonder if hell froze over, because the usually stiletto-clad Jeanne Beker was wearing…gasp…Uggs! What in the what? Ok, well, I guess it’s to be expected at an UGG preview, right? I guess so. She didn’t look bad in them, but it was definitely a change! Before the show began, the daughter of the The Mary Katz Claman Foundation for Alzheimer’s founder gave a touching speech, wearing Ugg clogs – who knew they made them too!?

The show was surprising…mostly because of the variety. There were your regular signature  Ugg boots, riding boots, motorcycle boots for men (which I really loved), children’s shoes, slippers, converse look-alikes, and studded clog-like boots. Once the show was over, the Ugg team set up a gallery of shoes and boots for everyone’s viewing. Sorry for the crappy pictures, but I kept finding the worst lighting…perhaps it’s because I kept my eyes peeled for the delicious lemony gnocchi served in little spoons…so gooood!

Blue Print Cru and Jay Malinowski of the Bedouin Clash performed after the show, but most people already dashed for the door to get their personalized gift-bags. I, for one, did not put two and two together, when I was asked for my shoe size, so it was truly an awesome surprise when I got a pair of dark brown Uggs for myself…to replace my beige worn out ones. Yes, I confess, I am not one of those Ugg haters…I do think they are pretty awesome for Canadian winters…great for shoveling the snow and shuffling around the snowy streets of Toronto. Too bad the size was a tad too big for me, but I’ll definitely be checking out the Fall 2010 collection once it hits the stores. The Kensington boots in black are super hot and will be perfect for winter!

And though I didn’t see any shoes from the Jimmy Choo + Ugg collection, I do now have a bit of an idea as to what they might look like.

Huge thanks to Andrea of SeCe apparel for the invite! It truly was a party to remember!

More shoes, celeb attendee, and Jay Malinowski after the JUMP!
