Oscars 2012: Emma Stone vs. Nicole Kidman

emma-stone-giambattista-valli-nicole-kidman-balenciaga-oscars

Back in 2007, Nicole Kidman wore arguably one of the best Oscars gowns ever. It was a red Balenciaga dress with a dramatic bow, and she looked gorgeous in it. Fast forward to 2012, and to lovely Emma Stone in a gorgeous Giambattista Valli gown…which I loved, but seeing how similar it is to Nicole’s iconic look, I had to ask. Who wore it best? Whose dress do you like best? Did Nicole do it better in Balenciaga, or is it Emma’s look that is red hot in your books? Take the poll below, and let me know!

Emma or Nicole?

What I Wore: Snake Charmer

Is it bad that in my books, this counts as a conservative outfit? When I first wore these snakeskin pants (purchased at my trusty H&M), le boyfriend LITERALLY recoiled in what can only be construed as horror. Yeah, yeah, Eastern European fashions…blah, blah, blah. Snakeskin prints (not unlike other animal prints) are scary to men…and I don’t understand why.

Take these pants, for example…I really like them, not just because python is a huge trend for fall, no! Because high waist elongates my legs, leather detailing on the pockets adds something extra to the look, and because they fit like a dream. Seriously, what’s not to love?

And in order to prove my point (or maybe le boyfriend’s point), I am going to ask you to take this poll. Do you think these pants are work-appropriate? Why or why not? These are cotton trousers, and I think they should be fair game at the office…especially, when worn with something as conservative as my silk Joe Fresh button up. Do you agree? Disagree? Take the poll below, and let me know!

Tell me: Are These Pants Office-Appropriate?

Wishlist: Hunter “Lapins” Lace Up High Heel Rubber Boots

I know that we just got our first taste of summer this year, but I’m already moving on to fall. Mostly, because I live in Canada, and the truth is – sooner, rather than later, cold weather will prevail…no matter how hard I stomp my flip-flopped feet.

And this fall season, I seriously want to stomp around in these hawt babies. Hunter “Lapins” Lace-up High Heel Rubber Boots ($225 USD, also come in Dark Olive and Navy). You read it right. HIGH. HEEL. RUBBER. BOOTS. Where have you been all my life?

The hunt for these Hunters is now in full effect. If you live in Toronto, and know where I can acquire these babies, please be a pal and let me know. Because as much as I love these boots, I don’t think I’m ready to buy them online just yet. What if they don’t fit? What if…Ok, yeah…the only concern for me here, is whether or not they will fit. That’s all.

So what do you think about these? Is it too early to care? Are they hideous? Are they lovely? Let me know what you think in the comments, or do the poll-thing below.

Friday Faux Pas: Jeffrey Campbell Fruit Slice Heel

Friday Faux Pas is back! Yay?

This week’s faux pas is Jeffrey Campbell’s knock-off of Charlotte Olympia’s amazing “Bananas Is My Business” fruit pumps. Yeah, yeah, JC is known to copy other designers, and then selling his shoes for less. But in this case, blatantly copying something so original and unique (or at the very least recent) is definitely disturbing. And though his fruit bowl shoes look like a sad, sad…saaad version of Charlotte Olympia’s gorgessity (clear plastic, really?), I still can’t believe that Urban Outfitters agreed to carry these in their stores.

So what do you think? Are these knock-offs a buy or a faux-pas? Take the poll below.

Friday Faux Pas: How Thin is Too Thin?

First of all, let me get this out of the way…I love Revolve Clothing. I love their product selection, their sales (Hello, D&G shoes for under $200!), their easy layout, and the fact that they ship to Canada (sometimes even for free). But something really bothered me a while ago, when I was browsing their site for the nth time. It wasn’t the fact that I missed out on that lovely Alexander Wang bag on sale, no, what bothered me was this bobblehead girl, with limbs as thin as my favorite egg tagliatelle from Buca. It was extremely unsettling seeing someone so unhealthy-looking, modeling clothes, while looking like a human hanger. Upon further prodding, I realized that said girl was featured in many other photos, looking slightly less scary when covered up, but shockingly thin in tank-tops and other revealing outfits.

What’s more, I realized that this sad-looking girl was also the same model who got picked on for being too skinny by the People’s Revolution maven Kelly “Don’t You Dare Effing Cry Inside” Cutrone during the one episode of The City that I ended up watching. I’m guessing that Kelly’s concern went unnoticed, seeing how this girl is still shockingly thin. But what’s more shocking than that, is the fact that she’s still somehow getting work.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not out to bully this particular model, or vilify the collective skinny, but my question is…how thin is too thin? Shouldn’t retailers realize by now that they aren’t promoting a healthy image, when booking models this skinny. And though some might argue that clothes look better on rail-thin girls, whose main job is to sell a product…In my opinion, models should look good in their outfits…and that would make me want to buy the clothes much more. It’s always a model in a size small or extra-small in the garment photo on every site, wouldn’t it be amazing if they had a medium, or…gasp…a size large model demonstrating how a particular item fits?

I guess, after a year, during which diversity was so widely celebrated, skinny is still the golden standard. And after getting so used to seeing the already thin girls at each and every online shopping site, I’m worried that eventually we’ll get used to seeing this as well. If we aren’t already. I’d love to hear your opinions on this. Take the poll below or leave a comment.

Style Fille: Gwyneth Paltrow

I know many of you will find this dress tasteless, too revealing, and beneath the usually elegant Gwyneth Paltrow. But to me, this outfit is perfect on so many levels…from the amazing shoes, to the simplicity of the dress itself, to her lovely hair – it all makes me wish I could pull off something like this. Alas, we aren’t all fitness fanatics, as Miss Goop is, and wearing something so unforgiving would be a terrible disaster for some of us…but to me, on Gwyneth, this Emilio Pucci dress kicks ass!

What do you think? Take the poll below.

Wednesday Candy: Clive Owen

Last week, le boyfriend and I were at H&M and I picked out a few items for him to try on. One of said items was a lovely black velvet blazer. He looked fantastic in it, better than I had expected, yet still he dismissed the garment, as if I was proposing that he wear a purple crushed velvet Juicy Couture track suit.

Fast forward to this week, and here’s my fave dreamboat Clive Owen in a similar velvet blazer. Coincidence? I think not! Perhaps Clive is trying to tell me something.

Help me out, ladies and gents…What do you think about a velvet injection into a man’s wardrobe? Do you subscribe to  George Costanza’s way of thinking, or should velvet be banned for upholstery use only?

Lanvin vs. Prada

Was catching up on my Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 RTW shows, when the above Lanvin dress (on the left) caught my eye. The whole look of it just felt eerily familiar. And of course it did, since I’ve already seen it back in 2009 during Prada’s Fall 2009 RTW show (on the right)! Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

All-over vertical embellishments? Check. Thick strips of fringe at the bottom of the skirt? Check. Belted waist? Check. And sure, Miuccia used leather to make her dresses, while Alber opted for a more delicate fabric. But so what? Lanvin’s finished product could be Prada dress’ not-so-distant cousin.

And no, I am not necessarily saying that this is a clear-cut case of creative plagiarism, but I do believe that the Prada design is not any typical ol’ LBD, it’s got enough distinguishing characteristics, so that I would never confuse that particular dress with another designer’s. Even after seeing the Bebe knock-off version, I remembered where I saw this dress first – Prada Fall 2009. And yet another factor is that Alber’s aesthetic for Lanvin has always had a very particular feminine air to it, not at all “tough gladiator chick”.

So what are your thoughts on this? Do you think someone at Lanvin was lacking original ideas, or is this dress not at all like the ones from Prada? Is immitation a sincerest form of flattery?

Take the poll below.

Friday Faux Pas: Paz De La Huerta

Ok, so perhaps because I’ve been staring at this picture for too long and it hypnotized my brain into thinking it’s not that bad, this outfit doesn’t seem as hideous today as it did to me yesterday. So to settle this Faux Pas or Not debate going on in my head, I’m asking you, loyal Style Blog readers, to decide. Is Paz De La Huerta’s head-to-toe leopard print getup a do or a do-not? Take the poll below.

What I Wore: Leather Shorts

So I went a little crazy at H&M the other day, and ended up with a ton of new and exciting items in my closet. But there was one thing I wasn’t sure that I’d keep – these faux leather shorts. I’ve been looking for a perfect pair of leather shorts for a while now…I want them longer (hitting at mid-thigh), somewhat loose fitting, cuffed, and with higher waist. Basically, I want a completely different pair of shorts. But for some reason, I just can’t convince myself to let them go. What do you guys think? Should I hold out for the “perfect” pair, or should I settle for these short-shorts? Take the poll below.

Should I keep these shorts or return them?

Wishlist: Small Frame Bags

Some trends literally make me grimace in terror (cough*clogs*cough), while with others I am instantly drawn and…sold. Such is the case with the new non-it-it-bag – The Small Frame Bag. Having watched my Style Fille fave Diane Kruger toting the above Hermès version for a while now, I’ve made a mental note to keep my eye open for a mere mortal affordable option for myself. But once I’ve spotted one at Zara, the flurry of doubts clouded my judgement and I walked away empty handed.

My main concern? Lack of space. In our ever-so-fast-paced world of iPhones, iPads, and other useless-ish crap, I find myself struggling with an idea of a small frame bag. There’s just too much stuff I tote around on a daily basis to be able to minimize it all to fit into a tiny rectangle of leather. So I ask you, stylish Style Blog readers, do you think small frame bags’ chicness outweighs their lack of practicality? Take the poll below!

What do you think about the new Small Frame Bag trend?

Friday Faux Pas: FitFlop Clog

Now if the clog trend wasn’t bad enough, now there’s a hybrid of flip-flops, clogs, and those hideous (and questionably effective) toning shoes available for all to buy. The only good thing about these is that it will only cost you $11 to look like a fool. And I do pity the fool who buys these “shoes”, and attempts to wear them in public. Do you?

PS. Oops, apparently, these clogs aren’t $11, they are $119! Now you’ll have to excuse me, while I laugh myself into a coma.

Buy, Keep, or Toss: Romper

Romper is one trend I promised myself to skip. I don’t think it looks flattering on me, and up until recently, I didn’t think it looked good on anyone else. But after seeing a few stylish ladies, rocking some cute rompers last weekend, I am definitely warming up to this trend (late adopter, or what?).

I’ve seen a few nice styles at Forever 21, and Zara, but have yet to find one that fits just right. I really like the romper/dress combo from Forever 21 (above), which sort of reminds me of the skirted bathing suit look, only the romper version, but I haven’t seen it in stores yet. What’s your take on this look? Do you like rompers for the summer? Or should they only be worn by babies and kids?

Thoughts on the romper trend
