The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2012: Best Dressed

met-costume-institute-gala-2012-giovanna_battaglia-dolce-gabbana

I am not exactly sure if we’re going to see eye-to-eye on my Best Dressed picks from the Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2012. But here they come. My number one pick for Best Dressed is Giovanna Battaglia in a floral Dolce and Gabbana gown, topped off with a floral crown (my recent obsession). She looks breathtaking…and a little Frida-Kahlo-esque…and I love everything about her look.

diane-kruger-prada-met-2012

Diane Kruger (in a floor-sweeping Prada number) can do no wrong in my eyes. She looks stunning, no? Interesting enough, but not crazy. I love the dress, the accessories, the hair and the makeup. Brava, Diane! Brava!

chloe-sevigny-miu-miu-met-2012

And then we have the yin to Diane’s yang. There’s something slightly off about this Miu Miu outfit that Chloe Sevigny has chosen for the Met Gala, and yes, it’s a little crazy, but I still love it. It’s the antithesis of boring. And while it might not be the classiest of getups, I kinda…not-so-secretly wish I could pull something like this off. So because of Chloe’s guts (or her stylist’s), I give this look two thumbs up.

rooney-mara-met-2012-givenchy

Rooney Mara in Givenchy is another one of my Best Dressed picks, because I really love what she has going on here. The hair and makeup really suit the dress, and I like that she went easy on the jewels…or rather, went jewel-less. There’s something weird going on in the crotch area…but I am willing to shrug it off as a photo-mishap.

ginnifer-goodwin-monique-lhuillier-met-2012

How gorgeous did Ginnifer Goodwin look in that Monique Lhuillier gown? So pretty, right? I wish she’d smile a little, and not look so annoyed and/or grim in photos. Come on, Ginny! It’s a ball! You have a pretty dress on! You’re dating an effing prince! Ok, not a real prince, but it still counts…I think. Either way, she’s still a fave of mine, and I love this dress (and the color) on her so much!

What I Wore: Clowning Around

zara-trf-wide-pants

I have a confession to make…I think I might have a case of Crazy Pants Addiction. It all started with a pair of printed Prada trousers I picked up at Holts Last Call, and escalated from then on. So far, I own floral pants, red pantssnakeskin pants, polka dot pants, pajama pants, black and white pants…and now I also own what le bf calls “clown pants”. Obviously, I disagree with his rash assessment of my new Zara wide-leg scarf-print silk trousers, because I think they are amazing!

Paired with my new fave leather jacket, velvet Miu Miu heels, and green OBJECT clutch, I think they look stunning…and not in a taser-stunned kind of way.

How do you feel about wide-leg silk trousers? Do you agree that they look like clown pants? Or are they perfectly 70s…in a good way? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Valentine’s Day: Last-Minute Gifts for Her

Okay, so truth be told…most of these gifts are not last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts for “her” per say, but mostly for me…Stuff that I like, find pretty/cute/adorbs, and wouldn’t mind getting this Valentine’s Day…*hints, nudges, and pokes all around* If you think your girlfriend/friend/wife/lovah might like the same things…well, more power to you…I think any of the above would make a sweet gift to the one you adore. Or just buy it all for yourself, because the relationship that you have with yourself is the most important one. Am I right, or am I right?

What do you want this Valentine’s Day? Aside from yummy chocolates, of course! Share in the comments. Or if you’re still undecided, click here for more Valentine’s Day gift ideas.

Wishlist: Miu Miu Glitter Shoes

I’ve already professed my love for Miu Miu Glitter Booties on my Stylish Bride blog (which I’ve abandoned lately), but I just cannot get enough of Miu Miu gorgessity this season. This ad, featuring Hailee Steinfeld living out every girl’s dream of swimming in sparkly shoes, is a few months old now, but the impact is still the same – NEED.WANT.GOTTA.HAVE.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t seen this exact pump online…but I am paying close attention – the pair in blue has my name written all over it. Which color is your fave? Share in the comments!

Style Fille: Rachel Bilson

Ok, so I don’t even know what Rachel Bilson is famous for anymore (other than that OC show), but I’ve always been a fan of her style. There’s just something about Rachel, don’t you think? I really like this outfit from head to toe, but if I had to choose just one piece to rave about, it would be her hat. You have to have a special kind of personality to be able to pull off hats.

Take last night, for example. I watched Liz Cabral (a fellow Style Fille) sport a wide-brimmed black hat similar to Rachel’s, and she looked so…natural wearing it. Point is – Liz Cabral wore the ish out of her hat, the hat did not wear Liz Cabral. Which wouldn’t be the case with yours truly. If I ever put one of those babies on my head, I’d look like an extra from the Three Musketeers! Fun fact: as a kid, I wanted to be a musketeer, or an American Gladiator.

Anyway, the actual point of this post is – I love Rachel Bilson’s outfit, and I want to be able to wear hats without feeling self-conscious and awkward. Is that too much to ask? Is it? IS IT?

What do you think of Rachel’s outfit? Like? Hate? So-so? Want to challenge me to an American-Gladiators-styles duel ? Let me know in the comments.

God Save The Queen: The Next British Invasion Party!

Last week, the most amazing thing happened. A group of prominent young British designers landed in Toronto to be feted at The Bay’s own Room on Queen St. Having swooned over many of their collections on Style.com for years, it was an incredible experience to have been able to meet and mingle with such creative geniuses as Canadian-born Erdem Moralioglu and Mark Fast, Jonathan Saunders, Nicholas Kirkwood, Giles Deacon, Marios Schwab, Tom Binns, Mary Katrantzou and the lovely Charlotte Olympia Dellal – all huge names worldwide, and all partying together at the same Room at the same time! When I first got the invite, I think le boyfriend went deaf from my…ahem…excitement. Huge thanks to Sandra for the invite! You’ve made my year!

I must say that I was quite nervous and starstruck by most of these talented individuals, and as Sharon of The Backseat Stylers put it, sometimes you have to remind yourself that designers too are people. If there was one designer that I really REALLY wanted to meet it had to be Erdem. I’ve always been fascinated by his beautiful, feminine designs and thankfully, the designer himself was just as charming in person. As a Canadian, who once upon a time went to Ryerson, he said that it felt great to come home, where he still has a lot of friends and family.

Later on at the party, I also got a chance to meet and speak to Charlotte Olympia Dellal, whose fun and fab outfit (peep the banana clutch) and whimsical shoes stole my heart, as did her cheeky personality.

Other attendees that night included Tommy Ton of Jak and Jil, whose photos are a huge inspiration to thousands of fashion lovers everywhere, and who is also notably a Canadian, Lisa Tant of Flare Magazine, Dan Levy of MTV Canada, and dozens of amazing Toronto bloggers. I had such an great time hanging out with Sharon and her hubby, Kimberly of The Souls of My Shoes, Lisa – The Hip Urban Girl, and meeting stylist Tricia Campbell Hall.

There were so many stylish people to photograph, so many beautiful (and I mean REALLY beautiful) clothes and shoes to look at – I can truthfully say that this was the event of the year in my books. So much talent and fashion under one roof, it was intoxicating.

And that’s the thing about the new Room at The Bay. It offers a wealth of labels to even the pickiest of shoppers, all carefully displayed in a gorgeous, brightly lit space, featuring trunk shows straight off the latest fashion shows, and giving its customers an opportunity to actually meet the designers. Even on a regular shopping day, The Room is an experience in itself, but pair it with what happened at The Next British Invasion gala, and you’ve got yourself a sure recipe for a night to remember. It might not feel like The Bay you already know, and perhaps it isn’t. This newly-improved Bay is way better!

Shopping: SPACE – Prada & Miu Miu Outlet in Florence

Apart from being in love with Florence, one of the highlights of the trip was definitely my visit to the Prada & Miu Miu outlet – Space. From getting there to shopping like a mad woman, I am pretty sure it was one of the most exciting days of my life! Seriously, it was a candy shop…a candy shop full of Prada bags. So in case any of you are interested in doing a little shopping of your own at Space in Montevarchi, here are some tips to help you along the way.

Space is not actually in Florence, it’s located in a small town of Montevarchi, 20-30 minutes away by train. We took the 9am train from Santa Maria Novella (direction to Rome), and then a cab from Montevarchi train station to the outlet. The cab should cost you around 12 EUR each way, cheaper if you share the ride with fellow bargain hunters.

Now this part is very important. Though the doors don’t actually open until 9:30am or 10:30am (see store hours above), once you get to the outlet, before you do anything, make sure to get a number from the machine next to the entrance. It doesn’t matter if you are number 1 or number 21, since it seems that they let around 100 people at a time (or at least that’s what the sign said), as long as you have one of those little pieces of paper, you’ll be able to get in and shop (but then again, it doesn’t hurt to ensure that you get one of the lower digits). Once you have your number, you can sit down at Space Cafe and work on your shopping strategy relax.

So initially, I had strict instructions for le boyfriend on the items that I might want and he needs to grab for me (I don’t mess around), but it turned out that shopping at Space Montevarchi isn’t chaotic at all – no hair pulling in sight. Selection of shoes, clothes, bags and other accessories is quite extensive (much MUCH better than at Foxtown or Woodbury), so unless you’re looking for a specific item, there’s no need to lose your mind and be all shaky and psychotic.

The store is broken up into sections, and you are not allowed to carry items from one section to another. What you need to do is approach a sales associate, hand the most-wanted items over and tell them your number (remember the number you had to get at the beginning?). Now, they will tell you that you’ll have to purchase those items, so make sure you are 99% sure you want to buy them. Though if you change your mind at the end, I doubt they’d make you buy them – my cashier actually asked me if I’m taking all of my items and let me contemplate them for a minute.

Once you’re done shopping, make sure to fill out a tax free form from the cashier to get the portion of the tax refunded to you (you can either mail it out or get it on the spot at designated locations). You can also ask the cashier to call you a cab to get back to the Montevarchi train station.

All that’s left to do now, is get back to your hotel room and roll around in your new purchases! You went, you saw, you shopped, and hopefully without too much damage to your credit card! Congrats!

And here’s some of my loot!

Shopping: Fall 2010 Essentials

Here in Canada, we’ve been royally spoiled this summer – endless summer days, warm patio nights, trips to the lake, and finally some sort of resemblance of a tan! I don’t think we’ve ever had a summer this amazing! But as they say, eventually all good things come to an end. And here we are, going into another fall season, pretty hopeless after completely blocking out what it feels like to walk through slush and hurricane-like freezing winds (or is it just me?).

So in order to get excited about the inevitable chill, I thought I’d share some of my Fall 2010 Essentials with all of you (if you want to see my Fall 2009 essentials, click here). Read about them after the jump!

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2010: Worst

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala is a ball. It is also a candy-shop-like heaven for the fashion lovers, what with beautiful gowns and crème de la crème of celeb world. But when said celebs pick some disastrous outfits to wear on such an important night, it makes me wonder if they did that to get noticed and to stand out from the crowd.

Well, in Katy Perry’s case, one does not need to wonder. A romantic white dress that lights up in the dark screams for attention…and that necklace is all wrong for the neckline of the dress. In my humble opinion, Katy Perry is the fail of the night.

A few other notables are Vera Farmiga in an ill-fitted baby blue Sophie Theallet for Gap fit for a saloon, Malin Ackerman in a not-so-flattering black-and-white dress, complete with blah hair, Elizabeth Banks in a fashion-forward feathered Gucci number that she overaccessorized bringing it from cool to trying-too-hard territory, and last but not least – Carey Mulligan in Miu Miu – cute dress, wrong occasion (plus the color washes out her pretty face).

What do you think about these dresses? Are they the worst of the night or do you have a soft spot for some of them? Sound off in the comments!

Meet Lilly. Lilly is the girl I ran into while waiting in line at Fran’s. The first thing I noticed about her outfit is, of course, her coat. I’ve been into this trend for a while now, and seeing someone young and stylish rocking an animal print in such a casual way – I just had to stop her for a picture! Next thing I noticed were her awesome cuffed motorcycle booties – a piece I’ve been looking for forever! Her lovely Miu Miu bag, which looks worn in but not worn out (the same cannot be said about my Miu Miu), and her infectious smile complete the outfit. What are your thoughts on Lilly’s style?
