What I Wore: Beauty Parler Says “I Do!”

When my friend Monica of Beauty Parler got engaged, I was so excited for her! I’ve known this stylish lady for 8 years now…pretty much ever since I’d moved here from Texas, and I just knew that her wedding was going to be incredible. Monica wore a lovely Priscilla of Boston gown, with a long Spanish veil…and she looked stunning…such a gorgeous bride!

Since I knew that her decor was going to have a lot of purple accents, choosing my outfit was a breeze. I finally got to wear my (precious) Lanvin x H&M dress! I’ve been saving it for a special-enough occasion, and what could be more special than a wedding? Le boyfriend and I danced salsa and merengue, ate Portuguese food, and had a lovely time. Plus, we might’ve gotten some pointers for our own wedding in May! Thank you, Mon and Carlos, for an amazing night!

“I’m a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I do my little turn on the catwalk”

Right Said Fred – Too Sexy

Don’t laugh, but I’m super-excited to share with you guys that I am now part of Ben Barry Agency’s amazing roster of models. Ben Barry Models represent fashion models of all ages, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities. Their goal? To create an inclusive and empowering fashion industry by helping brands authentically represent their consumers. We all know that consumers aren’t one size/age/ethnicity fit all. Every woman is beautiful in her own unique way, and it is imperative to have that beautiful diversity represented in the media. Ben Barry Models strive to do just that.

Last week, I finally got to have my test shoot, and I had THE.BEST.TIME! I got to style myself for the photoshoot, and I really enjoyed pulling the clothes for my outfits. I finally got to wear my Lanvin for H&M yellow dress, and boy, did I love wearing it!

And though, of course, I had a lot of fun being my own stylist/model for the day, I had a ton of help from other people…all props go to the amazing Liis Windischmann, who brought yummy snacks to keep us from passing out, provided valuable advice, and was there throughout the shoot to put me at ease, the brilliant photographer sisters Lily and Lilac, who guided me through the shoot with lots of encouragement, and of course, the beautiful make-up artist Boriana, who transformed me from blah to wa-wa-wee-wa. Thank you all for making this photoshoot an unforgettable experience! Can’t wait to see the final results of all the hard work.

As for what’s next? Not knowing is the exciting part. But if something cool happens, you’ll be sure to find out first, right here on Style Blog. Stay tuned?

Holidays 2010: Cool Guy Gift Ideas

For some awful reason, gift-buying for le boyfriend is particularly difficult this year. I don’t know if it’s due to the lack of paying attention on my part, or due to his lack of wanting things. I’m guessing it’s the former.

If you’re unsure, uninspired, and completely don’t know what to get your special someone this Christmas, check out a few gifts I’ve given in the past, and would consider giving in the future. Once again, prices range from $29.95 to $450, to fit various budgets.

Oh, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for here, check out Holidays 2009, and Valentine’s Day gift guydes. Any other suggestions? Please feel free to let me know in the comments…I am still not done shopping!

What I Wore: Lanvin for H&M

This is me, around 8:30 am on a Saturday (which is unheard of), happy as a hippo to have been able to snatch up the things I wanted from the Lanvin x H&M collection. Got the dresses I loved, the necklace, the totes, and a couple of other things. I was really, really lucky at the Yorkdale location - most things were gone in less than 30 minutes!

Shopping was done in an actual cage! Can you believe it? Cage shopping in 15 minutes: grab, pull, yank, grab, yell…No, it wasn’t too horrible. No one got slapped nor stabbed in Toronto, as opposed to the rumour that 3 people were hurt in a Lanvin dispute in New York. We were all pretty civilized, considering the circumstances. Sales associates were extremely attentive – helping find sizes, boxes, etc…all while being super pleasant…perhaps they felt bad for all the shopaholics in line.

As a reward for our patience, dresses were wrapped in beautiful garment bags, shoe bags were given for shoes, and credit cards were maxed out all around. Seeing my total on the cash register display made me feel slightly faint, but the 30 day return policy calmed my nerves (a bit).

The collab was a mad success, and some were even wondering whether Lanvin would do a second collab with the fast-fashion giant. Only time will tell. For now, I have to make sure that I coordinate my holiday outfits, as to avoid wearing the same things my friends are wearing. Lanvin or not, being dress-twins is so not cool.

PS. If you haven’t gotten a piece of Lanvin x H&M and are still holding out hope for a dress or two, items off the mannequins will be sold today. So make sure to stop by your nearest store.

I Wore: Cardigan – Billabong; Leggings – Target; Tank Top – Forever21; Boots – Zara; Bag – Prada; Belt – Moschino

Wishlist: Lanvin x H&M UNICEF Tote

If ever there was an item that did good while looking oh-so-good – this Lanvin x H&M UNICEF tote would fit the bill perfectly! It’s yet another item from the (SUPER) highly-anticipated collab that is now firmly on my “To Buy” list. 30% of the tote’s price will be donated to UNICEF, as part of the All for Children campaign. And though I don’t know the price of this item at the moment, I am certain that it will cost much less than the regular Lanvin canvas totes, that can set you back up to $1200!

Good luck tomorrow…and perhaps I’ll see you on the battlefield in the store?

UPDATE: These totes are $4.95, in case you were wondering.

Holidays 2010: Dear Santa…

Ahh, Christmas-time! The time of “giving and receiving as well as having and sharing”. To be quite honest, I struggled with my list this year…not because I don’t want things, but because, mostly, I feel like whatever I do want, I end up buying for myself (excluding Chanel 2.55). So here’s this year’s Christmas Wishlist of things that I haven’t bought for myself…just yet.

1. Salvatore Ferragamo Flats

Classic, comfy, lovely. Also want the “Miss Vara” belt, as seen here.

2. YSL Wallet

Technically, I am in love with the entire Y-Mail collection, but this beautiful wallet would surely rid me of my winter blues.

3. Charlotte Olympia Shoes

Ok, so this one is more of a “dream” wishlist item, considering the price. But after meeting Charlotte at a recent event, I’m not only in love with the witty Brit, but with her entire Spring 2011 collection.

4. Chanel Wallet on a Chain

Not even sure if this one is available in stores anymore, but I adore its simplicity and versatility. Wallet for the daily grind, and a chic clutch for nights out – all in one cute quilted little package.

5. Lanvin for H&M Dress

I don’t even know why I put this one on my Christmas wishlist, since I already know that I’ll be lining up outside my local H&M bright and early come November 20th. But in case Santa can really hear me…Please, please, please, give me luck (and strength) to get the dresses I want amidst the madness that is sure to ensue.

6. Chanel Earrings

These are vintage, and I’ve been looking for a similar pair in gold for quite some time now. Not an impossible item, but surely is a tough one to get.

7. Pierre Hardy for Gap Shoes

These peep-toe wedges are as amazing-looking, as they are kick-ass. Too bad I can’t find a pair in my size!

8. YSL Ring

Various versions of this ring have been available for a while now, and though at first I was clearly smitten with the one in turquoise, this indigo blue ring is a bit more…glam? Regardless, I love this combo the best!

So far, I only have 8  items on my Christmas wishlist. 2 more to come soon…as soon as I see something shiny that catches my eye!

What’s on your list this year? Any suggestion on the remaining 2? Share in the comments!

Details after the jump!

Lanvin x H&M Preview at the AGO

Ever since I received an invite for a special preview of Lanvin x H&M collection, I’ve been on the edge of my proverbial seat. Yes, we’ve all seen the many sneak peeks online, but to actually be able to see and touch the clothes up close and personal, would make shopping day that much easier, no? So, when Jo and I made our way to the AGO earlier this week, we were pretty pumped!

The moment we stepped out of the elevator, we were greeted by a group of immaculately dressed and styled mannequins dripping in “luxurious H&M”. The room was squared off by racks full of Lanvin x H&M, complete with beautiful garment bags, boxes and shoes on the floor. Immediately, I was drawn to the items I’ve already selected via the lookbook: the yellow ruffle dress, the pink asymmetrical dress, and the same one in deep plum. The fabric of the pink and plum dresses was a bit on a stiffer side (crinoline?), but I  guess it was necessary to give the needed architectural quality to the dress. I absolutely loved the exposed zipper detailing, and the puffy-poofy shoulder – both dresses were just as beautiful as expected.

The asymmetrical yellow dress was also quite nice. I couldn’t gauge what type of fabric it was made of, but it was definitely a heavier one – perhaps a cotton blend? I am still swooning over that dress today…the color, the ruffles, the zipper…the color! I was a bit worried about the unfinished hem, which is present in many Lanvin designs. Would it unravel faster, since it’s not actual Lanvin? Would it make the dress look cheaper? In my opinion, unravelling shouldn’t be a problem, as the stitching above the “unfinished hem” would keep the threads from coming apart. And none of the pieces I pawed at looked cheap at all. I think, if you’re able to score a Lanvin x H&M dress, or even a faux fur piece, you’ll be a lucky owner for many years to come.

The rest of the coollection (typo and I’m keeping it) did not disappoint as well. If you are a fan of the floral print, both floral dresses looked lovely and felt good to the touch. Again, little details, such as exposed zippers and elastic waist belts completed the look. A few people seemed disappointed with the use of elastic bands on dresses, but I really didn’t mind it. In my opinion, it’s better to have a built-in belt, and having an option of wearing something else over it, rather than not having any kind of waist definition at all.

Accessories were another point of contention. I, for one, seriously loved the pink necklace! Yes, it’s plastic. But it’s only $39! A piece of statement costume jewelry like that would spruce up any LBD that you have lifelessly hanging in your closet. It’s not an heirloom piece that you could pass down to your grandkids, but for what it’s worth, I felt that if funky jewels are your thing, then this Lanvin x H&M necklace would be a pretty good buy.

As far as the shoes go, I wasn’t really into them when the first photos of the collection hit the interwebs, and I wasn’t into them when I saw them at the AGO. I really wish they had some signature Lanvin flats instead, but regardless, many attendees went gaga for these pointy-toe pumps. My favorite of the bunch was definitely the black pair with rhinestone-covered heels – simple, yet different enough to stand out among the many shoes in my closet.

One thing I didn’t like about the shoes were the hard soles that didn’t bend or have any give. This was explained as part of the sample folly – all samples are made pretty fast, and aren’t meant to be worn. The lovely Emily, who is part of the H&M dream-team and who looked stunning in head-to-toe Lanvin x H&M, did say that the leopard-print pumps she wore that day were very comfy.

The rest of the night was a bit of a blur…I kept coming back to my favorite dresses to touch and feel them, and imagine what it would feel like to wear them. I also walked over to the men’s side to check out some of the offerings. There were some very nice pieces, but the most buzzed about were definitely the sweat pants and the cozy, soft cardigans, which even the ladies in attendance were lusting after.

Needless to say, I am dying to get my hands on a few pieces from this collection. As far as Toronto stores are concerned, Lanvin x H&M will be carried at Yorkdale, Eaton Centre, and Bloor St. locations. Stores will open at 8am to accommodate the anticipated demand, and each person will only be allowed 15 minutes to shop. And though this might seem a tad rigid, I am really happy that there seems to be some sort of structure to the madness that is sure to ensue. As long as you’ve done your research, 15 minutes should be plenty of time to get in, grab your most-wanted items, and happily saunter off to the fitting rooms.

But the question remains…will you be lining up on November 20th to get your very own piece of H&M luxury amazingness by Alber Elbaz? If so, I will surely see you there!

Lanvin for H&M – More Photos

I asked for color, and for shoes? Well, voilà! Vogue UK unveiled another photo of the stunning Lanvin for H&M collection this morning, and I am endlessly in love…Prices are definitely on the higher end of the H&M spectrum, but at 99GBP for each dress, 29GBP for gloves or bag, 25GBP for clutch or necklace – owning a piece designed by Alber Elbaz himself has never been more affordable. See you in line!

Lanvin for H&M – First Look

It seems that this morning everyone is buzzing with excitement over the release of the first look at the highly-anticipated Lanvin collaboration with H&M. So far, I am really into it! The black asymmetrical frock is a fave of mine, and is so typically Lanvin, that I can barely believe that this collab is actually happening. I do really hope that the collection has some signature Lanvin color, as well as some cute ballet flats. Though, I guess the shoe-thing won’t be happening with this particular collection. Either way…ladies, do you have your credit cards ready? I know, I do!

Lanvin vs. Prada

Was catching up on my Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 RTW shows, when the above Lanvin dress (on the left) caught my eye. The whole look of it just felt eerily familiar. And of course it did, since I’ve already seen it back in 2009 during Prada’s Fall 2009 RTW show (on the right)! Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

All-over vertical embellishments? Check. Thick strips of fringe at the bottom of the skirt? Check. Belted waist? Check. And sure, Miuccia used leather to make her dresses, while Alber opted for a more delicate fabric. But so what? Lanvin’s finished product could be Prada dress’ not-so-distant cousin.

And no, I am not necessarily saying that this is a clear-cut case of creative plagiarism, but I do believe that the Prada design is not any typical ol’ LBD, it’s got enough distinguishing characteristics, so that I would never confuse that particular dress with another designer’s. Even after seeing the Bebe knock-off version, I remembered where I saw this dress first – Prada Fall 2009. And yet another factor is that Alber’s aesthetic for Lanvin has always had a very particular feminine air to it, not at all “tough gladiator chick”.

So what are your thoughts on this? Do you think someone at Lanvin was lacking original ideas, or is this dress not at all like the ones from Prada? Is immitation a sincerest form of flattery?

Take the poll below.

Lanvin vs. Prada
