Holidays 2012: Canadian Fashion Insiders’ Gift Guide Part One

Canadian-Fashion-Insiders-Gift-Guide-Holidays-2012-Ela-Kowalewska

The holidays are almost here, and if like me you still haven’t started your holiday shopping, don’t worry and get happy, because this year, I asked some of my favourite Canadian Fashion Insiders to share their stylish holiday wishlists and gift ideas with us. What will a designer, a model, a photographer, a make-up artist, a stylist, an editor, a blogger, and a PR maven be getting and giving this holiday season? Read on to find out!

1. Ela Kowalewska, Designer, ela Handbags

One of my favourite Canadian accessories designers, Ela is without a doubt one stylish lady. This holiday season, on her wishlist is a gorgeous Cartier Juste un Clou ring (yes, please!), Margiela’s Untitled perfume, and a weekend stay to relax and play at Langdon Hall. As for her Give list…all I can say is her loved ones are pretty lucky, because this season she’ll be giving some pretty sweet presents. On Ela’s shopping list is the editor’s pouch from her namesake line ela, Caudalie beauty elixir (one of my fave skincare brands too!), Byredo Parfums’ Gypsy Water, and Tkees flip flops, among other lovely presents.

As for her favourite places to shop, Ela counts Holt Renfrew, eLUXE, and Chapters as her holiday mainstays. “Aside from spending quality time with family and friends over homemade dinners/cocktails on both sides of the Atlantic a touch of snow (sprinkle will do), a good Christmas market as well as a few laps around the Somerset House skating rink get us into the holiday spirit,” shared Ela.

2. Jason Hudson, Photographer

Not only is Jason one of the most talented photographers I know, I am also obsessed with his personal blog. Chronicling the people he meets, the events he attends (and works), the delicious food he cooks, along with personal stories and helpful tips on a variety of subjects, his website is more than just a blog – it’s pretty much a life guide, and a very helpful one at that.

What more, Jason and his partner Jeff will be setting off on an adventure of a lifetime this December, taking a year off to travel the globe! Appropriately, on Jason’s wishlist this season is a new luggage set from Heys (something durable, that will survive a year of constant travelling), MacBook Air to record his adventures, and a pair of new Persol sunglasses, which he’ll surely need while sipping delicious drinks in Honolulu.

As for what he’ll be giving to his loved ones this holiday season, Jason shared that his go-to host gift is the “super Canadian” Sortilege Maple Whisky, and that champagne flutes from Tiffany never fail – “the blue box is high-impact and exciting, and the glassware is classic.” Jason and Jeff will also be buying a map of the world for their nephews, so that they will be able to “follow us on our travels around the world!”

Shopping: Black Friday and Cyber Monday Wishlist

black-friday-wishlist-master-card-canada

Sponsored Post

While Canadians tend to save the majority of their holiday shopping for Boxing Day, our US neighbours get to go all out on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And as someone who’s lived in the US, I can attest to how tempting some of those deals can be. But what usually stops me from doing some major damage and taking advantage of every awesome sale out there (apart from the budget, of course) are those pesky duties, and shipping and handling charges.

Well, if there’s something on your list that you simply MUST have this season, you MUST check out MasterCard Canada’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals that will be in effect until December 10th! With great offers like Free Express Shipping, Discounts, and DUTY FREE SHIPPING from some of my fave US retailers like Barneys New York, Bloomingdales, Gilt, Saks Fifth Avenue, and more, shopping those Cyber Monday deals has never been easier…and cheaper.

Right now, my wishlist is pretty short, and I am still trying to decide between finally getting my hands on a Miss Lanvin doll, Barneys x DVF vinylmation figure, or that gorgeous printed Prada clutch. A Christmas prezzie from me to myself. Don’t forget to treat yourself too! Happy Shopping!

Wishlist: Fall 2012 Surrealist Accessories

surrealist-accessories-fall-2012-2

From Nicholas Kirkwood to Diane Von Furstenberg to Lanvin to MAC Cosmetics, it seems everyone is embracing the surreal and the abstract in fashion. And for someone like me, who loves all things quirky, these pieces are simply perfect. Last week, I actually saw the Kirkwood flats at The Room, and was so tempted to buy them, but I’m afraid le bf would kick me out of the house, if I’d brought another pair of weird-looking shoes home. Obviously, I will still keep an eye on them, just in case a pair is available in my size come sale time.

What do you think of this artsy trend? Are you as into it as me, or do you find it weird? Let me know in the comments!

Wishlist: Lanvin Embellished Cotton Dolls

If you’re looking for a perfect gift for that special fashion lover who seems to have it all, look no further. Handmade by women in Swaziland who are living with HIV, these limited edition Lanvin Cotton Dolls ($400 each) are not only amazingly cute, they contribute to a great cause too. Percentage of proceeds from sale of these stylish dolls will go to Dessine L’Espoir – a charity that “assists individuals and communities living with HIV/AIDS and the resulting impact by providing support in the form of home-based care, medical, food and shelter and psychological support; as well as running training programmes such as sewing workshops, offering financial assistance and establishing income-generating projects”.

Do you like these Lanvin sure-to-become-collectible dolls? Which one is your fave? Share in the comments.

What I Wore: Beauty Parler Says “I Do!”

When my friend Monica of Beauty Parler got engaged, I was so excited for her! I’ve known this stylish lady for 8 years now…pretty much ever since I’d moved here from Texas, and I just knew that her wedding was going to be incredible. Monica wore a lovely Priscilla of Boston gown, with a long Spanish veil…and she looked stunning…such a gorgeous bride!

Since I knew that her decor was going to have a lot of purple accents, choosing my outfit was a breeze. I finally got to wear my (precious) Lanvin x H&M dress! I’ve been saving it for a special-enough occasion, and what could be more special than a wedding? Le boyfriend and I danced salsa and merengue, ate Portuguese food, and had a lovely time. Plus, we might’ve gotten some pointers for our own wedding in May! Thank you, Mon and Carlos, for an amazing night!

I Wore: Dress – Lanvin x H&M; Shoes – Pierre Hardy (The Room); Clutch – Winners; Ring – YSL; Earrings – The Bay

“I’m a model you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah on the catwalk on the catwalk yeah
I do my little turn on the catwalk”

Right Said Fred – Too Sexy

Don’t laugh, but I’m super-excited to share with you guys that I am now part of Ben Barry Agency’s amazing roster of models. Ben Barry Models represent fashion models of all ages, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities. Their goal? To create an inclusive and empowering fashion industry by helping brands authentically represent their consumers. We all know that consumers aren’t one size/age/ethnicity fit all. Every woman is beautiful in her own unique way, and it is imperative to have that beautiful diversity represented in the media. Ben Barry Models strive to do just that.

Last week, I finally got to have my test shoot, and I had THE.BEST.TIME! I got to style myself for the photoshoot, and I really enjoyed pulling the clothes for my outfits. I finally got to wear my Lanvin for H&M yellow dress, and boy, did I love wearing it!

And though, of course, I had a lot of fun being my own stylist/model for the day, I had a ton of help from other people…all props go to the amazing Liis Windischmann, who brought yummy snacks to keep us from passing out, provided valuable advice, and was there throughout the shoot to put me at ease, the brilliant photographer sisters Lily and Lilac, who guided me through the shoot with lots of encouragement, and of course, the beautiful make-up artist Boriana, who transformed me from blah to wa-wa-wee-wa. Thank you all for making this photoshoot an unforgettable experience! Can’t wait to see the final results of all the hard work.

As for what’s next? Not knowing is the exciting part. But if something cool happens, you’ll be sure to find out first, right here on Style Blog. Stay tuned?

Holidays 2010: Cool Guy Gift Ideas

For some awful reason, gift-buying for le boyfriend is particularly difficult this year. I don’t know if it’s due to the lack of paying attention on my part, or due to his lack of wanting things. I’m guessing it’s the former.

If you’re unsure, uninspired, and completely don’t know what to get your special someone this Christmas, check out a few gifts I’ve given in the past, and would consider giving in the future. Once again, prices range from $29.95 to $450, to fit various budgets.

Oh, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for here, check out Holidays 2009, and Valentine’s Day gift guydes. Any other suggestions? Please feel free to let me know in the comments…I am still not done shopping!
