The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2011: Best

There’s no night like the Met’s Costume Institute Gala for fashion porn. To me, not even the Oscars can compete with THE  fashion event that is Met Ball. Which is why, year after year, I keep hoping for more drama, more choices that aren’t exactly safe – something eye-popping, gorgeous, and not boo-ring. This year, there were so many champagne color safe gowns, some really beautiful (Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney), others (cough*Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney*cough) not so much, but all withouth exception – boring, boring, boring. And though the idea of “Best Dressed” is really a matter of preference and opinion, here are my top 5 best-dressed ladies of the night.

1. Ginnifer Goodwin in Topshop Unique

Lovely pop of color and that beautiful face with perfect makeup, and her new-ish pixie. This one was my favorite look of the night.

2. Diane Kruger in Jason Wu

You already know that I love me some Diane. And I felt that her super-high thigh-slit and those gorgeous gams of hers really made this look. So hot!

3. Margherita Missoni in Missoni

A dress that is part sorbet buffet and part Swan Lake…I’m all over it! Love her choice of accessories, and that messy bun. Such a fun, fresh, young look. Love it!

4. Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen

This was rather understated for ADR, no? But I still loved her take on feminine tuxedo-dressing, egg-headpiece and all.

5. Liv Tyler in Givenchy Couture

The entire Spring 2011 Givenchy Couture collection was one of the best in a very long time, and this gown is definitely anything but boring. I love the color, the feathers, and the origami-like detailing. I wish I could wear something this beautiful one day. It’s exquisite!

Do you agree with my picks? Do you think they are hideous? Did you have some other favorites? Discuss in the comments?

Wishlist: Small Frame Bags

Some trends literally make me grimace in terror (cough*clogs*cough), while with others I am instantly drawn and…sold. Such is the case with the new non-it-it-bag – The Small Frame Bag. Having watched my Style Fille fave Diane Kruger toting the above Hermès version for a while now, I’ve made a mental note to keep my eye open for a mere mortal affordable option for myself. But once I’ve spotted one at Zara, the flurry of doubts clouded my judgement and I walked away empty handed.

My main concern? Lack of space. In our ever-so-fast-paced world of iPhones, iPads, and other useless-ish crap, I find myself struggling with an idea of a small frame bag. There’s just too much stuff I tote around on a daily basis to be able to minimize it all to fit into a tiny rectangle of leather. So I ask you, stylish Style Blog readers, do you think small frame bags’ chicness outweighs their lack of practicality? Take the poll below!

What do you think about the new Small Frame Bag trend?

Oscars 2010: Best Dressed

Ruffles, and Notten, and Kruger, oh my! It wasn’t too tough to choose my fave four ladies on the Oscars red carpet last night, since so many actresses opted for pretty, but safe gowns, that only elicited a reaction of “meh” from me and my. Not so with these four ladies. My favorite of the night was Vera Farmiga’s ruffly fuchsia frock. Ruffles are tricky, and not everyone can pull them off without looking overpowered, but Farmiga managed to look fresh, stunning, and definitely not safe or meh. Finally, someone with a bit of imagination and guts on the red carpet!

The same can be said about Maggie Gyllenhaal. The aquatic print, the streamlined cut, the pink lips – it all adds up to an outfit that could look all sots of bad on a wrong person, but on Maggie it’s perfection (if only slightly too wrinkled for my taste). I loved her Dries Van Notten abstract print dress the moment I saw it!

It took me a bit longer to love Diane Kruger’s Chanel Haute Couture pick. The midsection ruffles appeared to look distracting at first, but the confidence with which she wore it, and the gorgeous back of her dress, made me love it the more I saw it! I’ve mentioned before that Diane doesn’t have a stylist, and on this occasion (as with many others), I fully support her gown choice! Plus, Lucky Magazine, reported that Kruger did her own makeup for the big night! How cool is that? I think she did a great job!

My final best dressed pick is Zoe Saldana. Saldana’s Golden Globes dress was not a safe choice, and neither is her Oscars Givenchy gown. It’s pouffy, with a bejeweled bodice, and with what looks like pom-poms all over the train of her skirt, but the color looks fantastic with her complexion, the “pom-poms” look fun and intricate, and I happen to love the blingy neckline. It’s fun to look at, and I am sure it was fun to wear!

All Dolled Up

Love these dolls so much! I want them all! There’s Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler…and more! If I had a daughter, I would definitely want her to have one of these Kouklitas (which seems like a Spanish-ified version of the Russian word for doll – Koukla). I can’t decide on my favorite here. They are all so cute! A little creepy too (they remind me of those 3D paintings by Phoebe from Friends, remember those?)…but still more cute than creepy! Which one is your fave?

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2010

PFW1

Above from left to right: Givenchy, Celine, Chloé

Paris Fashion Week wraps up tomorrow, but I am too anxious to wait, so I’ll give you my faves today! Oh, Paris, how I love thee! So many amazing designers, so many beautiful creations…oh, how I wish I was there. I’ve been to Paris a few times now, and every time I find something different, something new to love about the city of light. And as far as fashion weeks go, this one is my favorite, hands down.

Again, I’m not sure if it’s because I am trying to see it, or if it really is an upcoming trend, but I am seeing nudes everywhere! But this being the Spring 2010 fashion week, there was plenty of color too! My favorite yellow at Stella McCartney, aqua at Viktor & Rolf, Kenzo, and McQueen, gorgeous red at Lanvin, orange at John Galliano, and many others.

And while I love me some Chanel, I wasn’t very impressed with anything from the spring collection this time around (or maybe it’s the clogs), so I am not including it in the highlights lineup. The collection I am definitely including is Alexander McQueen! Just look at the details! It’s underworld meets bug’s life! The fabrics, the shapes, the shoes, the hair! I couldn’t pick one, I love it all!

And while, others are showering Louis Vuitton’s collection with praise, to me…I just didn’t get it. More clogs, furry tails hanging off shoes, mish-mash of shapes and patterns. Not my cup of tea. And seriously, are you kidding me with this…are clogs really going to be in this coming spring??? I, for one, will never ever wear clogs! This is a promise. There’s far too many beautiful shoes out there to waste my time wearing something so ugly!

lv clogs

So c’est tout for Paris Fashion Week Spring 2010. I’m feeling a little sad to have to wait until the Resort collections will be released, but I think we had a great run with all these amazing clothes from London, New York, Paris, Milan…I guess we all can start making our wish lists for spring!

Beautiful Men

Patrick-Dempsey

Nowadays, it’s never surprising to see a celebrity fronting a beauty campaign for a big brand, so obviously I wasn’t shocked to see so many hot celeb guys’ pics at the duty free shop in London. What surprised me, however, is that most of those guys are on my Freebie 5 (or very close runner ups)! Coincidence? I think not! Definitely made my layover much more enjoyable! Have a look at these awesome ads and the gorgeous gentlemen in them. Beautiful, aren’t they?
