Zara Woman December 2012 Lookbook

zara-woman-december-2012

My love-hate relationship with Zara continues. Earlier this week, I stopped by the store to pick up a silver clutch I spotted online, and to my delight, it was available! But thank goodness the cashier took his time getting me a pair of sunglasses, because while waiting at the cash register, I caught a whiff of something…unsavoury. Upon closer inspection, the source of the stench was none other than the silver clutch itself…or its lining to be more specific. That thing reeked! After a couple of days of not being able to get that clutch out of my head, I actually went back to the store yesterday to see if I’d imagined the gross smell, or hoping that perhaps the smell went away…but nope, once I opened the clutch, it hit me right in the nose. The same gross toxic smell. Sadness all around.

Having said that, it wasn’t my first “toxic smell experience” at Zara. Back in September I picked up a pleather top, which I proceeded to wear to work the next day. All day I kept smelling something weird…and as it turned out, it was me! Having bought another pleather shirt from Zara that didn’t make me smell weird, I figured it had to have been some weird fabric smell, but when I tried returning it (seriously that thing smelled awful and fishy), the manager wouldn’t let me, saying that no one else had reported this issue, and pretty much implying that it had to have been my own body odour. Ugh…as if! So the smelly shirt is now languishing at the bottom of my laundry basket…never to be worn again. Having googled this, I found out that other people have had a similar problem with faux leather products too, so Zara is certainly not alone in this. Well, after some prodding from Greenpeace, Inditex (Zara’s parent company) has finally agreed to go toxic-free by 2020. That’s a long time from now, sure…but hopefully I won’t have to smell any more toxic items in their stores any time soon.

Have you had any toxic Zara experiences? Would love to hear about them. Share in the comments!

Toronto Fashion Week: Holt Renfrew Hot at 175 Runway Show and Pink Tartan Spring 2013 Collection

Yesterday was Day 1 of World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto, where I attended two of the most highly-anticipated shows of the week - Holt Renfrew Hot at 175 and Pink Tartan Spring 2013.

toronto-fashion-week-maybelline

I arrived nice and early to check out backstage hair and makeup prep, and to have a quick chat with Grace Lee, Maybelline Canada’s lead makeup artist. For the Holt Renfrew show, Grace created a polished “it-girl” look, classic and wearable, while Jorge Joao, Redken’s lead stylist, chose loose waves with a side part to match.

Instead of showing Spring 2013 arrivals, Holt Renfrew presented a special edition runway celebrating the best of what’s in store and on-trend now, showcasing brands like Jeremy Laing, Smythe, Carven, Kenzo, MSGM, and even that now almost iconic Tom Ford gown that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to The Oscars. I loved the styling and the selection, which reminded me of all those fall pieces that I am still craving this season.

Next up was Pink Tartan. Rocking her signature pink locks, model Charlotte Free opened the show in a midriff-baring bustier/full skirt combo. Head designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran shared that she chooses her models for their vibrant personalities, and with pink hair to match, Free was a perfect choice for Pink Tartan’s spring show.

The collection itself featured delicate lace frocks, subtle metallics, pastel-coloured trapeze coats (Newport-Mimran’s favourite), brocade separates, full skirts, perforated leather, and Aldo Rise x Pink Tartan collaboration shoes (classic pumps with geometric heels). It was full of feminine, oh-so-pretty retro-inspired pieces, and despite the fact that I’m not a girlie girl, I loved it all. Will have to check out this collection once it becomes available at the flagship location in Yorkville in a few months.

Overall, Day 1 was a blast! I got to see a lot of great fashion, hung out with fellow Stylicity bloggers Anita Clarke, Gloria Chik, and Crystal Gibson, visited backstage with Maybelline and Redken, and had a quick chat with Kimberley Newport-Mimran – all in a day’s work. Stay tuned for more World MasterCard Fashion Week coverage, as I attend some of my favourite shows later this week.

Shopping: Fall 2012 Essentials

fall-2012-must-haves

Fall is the most dangerous time of the year…for my wallet. What with gorgeous coats, boots, and leather pieces all over the place, I can’t help but drool over so many (too many) things. And while I try to be good most of the time, some things are just necessities. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

Above are just a few of those “necessities” of mine. Curious to know what yours are. Share in the comments!

Stuart Weitzman Fall 2012 Trend Event

stuart-weitzman-fall-2012-trend-event-toronto

Last month, Stuart Weitzman held Fall 2012 Trend Event in Toronto, and I was lucky to get a little preview of the goods. The brand’s fall collection was full of drool-worthy shoes and boots, from embroidered smoking flats, to over-the-knee croc-embossed leather boots, to bold animal prints, the variety of styles made my head spin. And that was not all! The new collection of handbags was also unveiled at the event, showcasing a line-up of sophisticated structured satchels, envelope clutches, and more.

My fall favourites included the aforementioned embroidered flats, toe-cap lace-ups, and those gorgeous (GORGEOUS) croc-embossed boots. I might not be a fan of low temperatures, but I sure do love my fall footwear!

To check out Stuart Weitzman’s entire Fall 2012 collection, please visit the brand’s website, and choose your own favorites!

Lucian Matis Fall 2012 Ad Campaign

lucian-matis-fall-2012

How gorgeous are these shots from the Lucian Matis Fall 2012 campaign? Having seen these clothes in action back in March, I was blown away by the stunning designs, intricate details, and the sheer amount of work and imagination that went into creating these gorgeous pieces. And now, I am just as blown away by this campaign. Moody, dark, and almost fairy-tale-like, these images make me want to see these gowns on someone at the Oscars, or at least at TIFF! On Keira Knightley, perhaps? Someone, make it happen!

What do you think about this campaign? Are you loving the clothes? The styling? Share in the comments!

Massimo Dutti Opens First Store in North America…in Toronto!

massimo dutti eaton centre

Back in my Zara days, I used to look wistfully through the Inditex portfolio of brands, and wish that someday these awesome retailers would make it to Canada. Well, 8 or so years later, I finally got my wish! Earlier this week, Massimo Dutti opened its very first North American store right here in Toronto, and I couldn’t be happier!

Even le bf, who tries to avoid these fashiony events like the plague, was excited to attend the opening of the new and shiny Eaton Centre location. If you are not familiar with the Massimo Dutti brand, think of it as Zara’s older and more sophisticated sister…or brother. While Zara’s offerings tend to be on the trendier side, Massimo Dutti offers collections with more staying power.

“Massimo Dutti’s 584 stores in 53 countries share a universal design which transcends national borders to connect with today’s men and women, who are independent, urban and cosmopolitan. It offers a wide variety of collections, ranging from sophisticated high-end fashion to easygoing casual wear.”

I loved the new store’s sleek design, and elegant selection of menswear and womenswear, and will be sure to add it to my rotation of stores that I visit at least weekly!
