Converse Fall 2011 Collection Preview

I adore checking out Converse previews…spring or fall, I love them all! For next season (aka Fall 2011), DC Comics collab is back full throttle, and I will definitely be picking up the Batmobile pair for my year-old nephew. Marimekko collab will also continue for fall, with signature prints and bright colors. Just looking at those makes me feel happy.

And though the women’s collection showed some promising styles and colors, my favorites this season came from the men’s collection. While the main silhouette remained classic, elements like leather laces, zippers, and fun fabrics were introduced for fall. In my opinion, leather Chucks would be a perfect addition to any man’s shoe closet, and there was no shortage of those at the preview (in grey, camel, black, and more). Another cool thing I noticed, were the abundance of winter styles, rangingfrom the classic Chuck silhouette to the winter-boot-looking styles, lined with faux fur for extra warmth. This way you don’t ever have to stop wearing your Converse shoes, rain or shine.

Converse Spring 2011 Collection Preview

It’s February, and what does that mean? Spring items arriving in stores daily! Hooray!

Last week, thanks to MB Communications, I got to check out what Converse has to offer this Spring. And I definitely liked what I saw. The main attractions for me was the Marimekko collaboration collection. Bright colors, fun original patterns from the 1960s - I’m officially in love. The Marimekko collab included a new, more feminine Chuck Taylor All Star PJ silhouette, as well as the Jack Purcell Helen, All Star, and Oxford silhouettes. These shoes are perfect for some summer lovin’, and should be in stores now.

Another amazing collaboration for Spring 2011 is Converse x DC Comics. I seriously wished I saw these pairs in stores much earlier, as they would’ve made a perfect Valentine’s Day gift! Most shoes from this collection feature both good and evil characters from the iconic comic books, including Batman, Joker, Wonder Woman (yeah!), Superman, and many others. There are so many cool pairs in that collab, but I am pretty sure they’ll sell like hot cakes. So if you or someone you love is a comic book fan, make sure to track down a pair soon, before they are all gone.

All in all, I was very impressed with what I saw. Apart from the main collabs presented, there were studded Chucks, camo Chucks, woven leather Varvatos Chucks, Jack Purcell Chucksthat James Dean used to wear, and so many more…I wish I could justify buying them all, and if I wasn’t such a high heel girl, I totally would. In the meantime, I think I know what I’m getting for le boyfriend’s birthday!

Holidays 2010: Cool Guy Gift Ideas

For some awful reason, gift-buying for le boyfriend is particularly difficult this year. I don’t know if it’s due to the lack of paying attention on my part, or due to his lack of wanting things. I’m guessing it’s the former.

If you’re unsure, uninspired, and completely don’t know what to get your special someone this Christmas, check out a few gifts I’ve given in the past, and would consider giving in the future. Once again, prices range from $29.95 to $450, to fit various budgets.

Oh, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for here, check out Holidays 2009, and Valentine’s Day gift guydes. Any other suggestions? Please feel free to let me know in the comments…I am still not done shopping!

What I Wore: Bella Venezia

Lots of people told me that Venice is not worth it, that it’s smelly, dirty, crowded, overrated, and not very special. Well, I guess opinions are just opinions, no offence to my friends, but I really loved Venice. Mostly because we spent most of our time away from the tourist attractions, and stuck to the smaller streets…wandering, exploring, getting lost and loving it.

Have you ever been? In my opinion, it’s worth every penny.

Converse Fall 2010 Collection Preview

What a bad blogger I have been! I really don’t have an excuse, other than…I’ve been horribly lazy. Umm…no, not lazy…busy…yeah, that’s it. Either way, sorry once again, and I will definitely try to bring my A-game for the remainder of the summer…”try” being the key word.

A couple of weeks ago, the lovelies over at MBCommunications invited me among the other fashion-loving set to attend the Fall 2010 preview of Converse aka Most Amazing Casual Shoes EVER. And though to me, nothing beats the boring  classic black and white Chucks, some shoes that I saw at the preview made me reconsider. There were shoes for every type of person out there: fun “Seuss” Chucks, slick Jack Purcells, glittery Converse for tweens, amazing band-inspired shoes, winter-boot Converse, and of course the good-old classic Chuck Taylors.

The thing that really got me excited was definitely the Dr. Seuss collection. Having a little nephew of my own, I cannot wait till he’s old enough to rock the adorable red high-tops. In the meantime, I guess I could get a pair for myself…don’t judge me, I’m still a huge kid at heart!

Some styles are already available at the Get Outside  store on Queen St., while others will be coming in throughout August/September. Make sure to call the store for availability. Now if only they carried Converse x Missoni collection too…perhaps next year?

Summer Mansentials

It’s official – it is summer time in Canada! The sun is hot, the skin is in, and the patios are buzzing! But is your man ready for the heat? Judging by the many run-ins with style-handicapped guys I spotted this weekend at The Beach, many guys don’t get that you can be both comfortable and stylish during the summer. And while, I realize that most men would balk at the idea of making over their style, below are the three essential items, that I think every guy should have this summer! And yes, this includes le boyfriend.

1. Summer shorts

As the temperatures rise, the hemlines of ladies’ skirts keep going up, but what about the guys? I think it’s very important for guys to have at least one decent pair of shorts for the summer. Unfortunately, lots of men’s idea of decent shorts are sloppy, slouchy, ill-fitting, and at times plain ugly. Men’s shorts come in a variety of styles to fit different lifestyles, but in general the more pockets there are, the less streamlined, and therefore less flattering the shorts will look. Stores usually have an abundance of shorts and swim trunks at this time of the year, so your options are definitely not limited. So pick up a pair that you like for your man, and chances are he’ll grow to like them, and won’t look sloppy any more. I’ve also found this site, which also has some cool options from brands like G-Star.

2. Stylish kicks

Back when I lived in Houston, seeing a guy wearing flip-flops never induced any unpleasant feelings on my part. Here in Toronto, however, I am not a fan…unless we’re at the beach, at the pool, or at a BBQ that is. Converse have been my guy shoe of choice for a few years now, and with the canvas upper, I think they are pretty good shoes for the summer, as well as always in style. Though le boyfriend loves them as well, he did find the Lacoste sneakers much more comfortable. I love Lacoste shoes, especially since they have so many simple, yet stylish looks available…it’s easy to find one that would work for your man. And of course, the penny loafers look amazing with rolled up pants/jeans, in the summer…so very “Sartorialist meets Italian riviera”…but it takes a certain type of man to rock those. Though in the end, I think any of these beat sandals with socks, no?

3. Below the neck grooming

When Lisa of One Voice offered to send le boyfriend Philips Bodygroom Pro, I jumped at the chance. While he agreed to be my guinea pig (thanks, baby!), he didn’t fully realize what that would entail. Luckily for me, he isn’t as hairy as some men, but some shaving and trimming still goes a long way. Thankfully, nowadays, most men already realize that at least some body grooming is important below the neck…necessary, even. But with the beach season quickly approaching, and if your man is still hesitant to try it, perhaps you could sneak a Bodygroom unit into his bathroom one day as a hint. Le boyfriend did secretly like Philips Bodygroom Pro, not that he necessarily needs the shaving side, but the trimmer definitely came in handy! Plus, he was able to use it both in the shower and out. Now help your man take off that “sweater” and enjoy some sunshine! Bodygroom Pro is currently available at Bed Bath and Beyond in Canada, while Sears, HBC, and Personal Edge should be getting them sometime in July.

What other mansentials would you suggest for your guy? Share in the comments!

Anything but running shoes!

My boyfriend’s style isn’t bad. Unlike many guys out there, he actually cares about his clothes and doesn’t just pick stuff off the floor in the morning and pile it on randomly. He likes to look good. He also doesn’t own any off the shoulder boatneck sweaters like some people I know (and thank goodness for that!). So when he told me that he is bringing a pair of running shoes for our trip to Europe, I was a bit taken aback.

After the initial reaction of “YOU ARE WHAAAAAAAAAAAT???”, I could kind of see where he was coming from. The pair of Converse high tops that he usually wears and that I love dearly are not very comfortable and won’t be an ideal choice for long (loooong) walks that we are bound to take (blisters aren’t fun in Canada, can’t imagine they’d be a blast in Europe)…So what now? Am I going to let him look like a typical North American tourist in a t-shirt that reads “I am CANADIAN!”, khaki shorts, thick white athletic socks, and…running shoes??? I might as well sign him up for the Da Vinci Code tour around Paris and be done with it!

Instead, I thought a little showcase of what else is out there in casual footwear might do the trick in preventing him from crossing over to the dark side. In my humble opinion, a simple black sneaker/casual shoe could be just as comfy as “the shoe that will not be named”, and look a thousand times better! Just ask Patrick Dempsey.
