What I Wore: Let the Rain Fall Down

You know, funny thing happened as I got older (and presumably, wiser) – I learned that sometimes, it makes sense to dress sensibly. I no longer NEED to wear the highest of heels during the winter months (I’m not in Texas anymore). I have learned (from many mistakes) that leather boots get ruined after just one season of salty slush, while simultaneously failing to provide any kind of warmth – especially, once said salty slush has somehow eaten away at the leather, letting the freezing water sneak its way into my socks. Thanks, but no thanks.

So last winter, I stuck to my Cougar rain boots all winter long. That’s right rubber boots in the winter. It’s true – they aren’t the warmest. But throw in a pair of wool socks, and you’ve got a pair of waterproof winterized boots! This winter, I am planning to wear rain boots a lot, so I figured I should get a dressier pair…and then…

…I saw them. Mel rain boots. Cute as a can be, ankle-length, and comfy to boot! Perfect with dresses, skinny jeans…pretty much anything, really. I don’t ever want to take these off…well, except for when I sleep…maybe.

What about you? What’s your go-to cold weather footwear? Share in the comments.

I Wore: Coat – Old Navy; Leggings – Target; Rain Boots – Mel (Urban Outfitters); Scarf – H&M; Bag – Prada; Sunglasses – Ray Ban

UGG Australia First Toronto Store Launch

A couple of years ago, when I was looking for a pair of UGG boots in my size, I simply could not find them anywhere. Well, fast forward to this month, and lucky Torontonians now have an entire store dedicated to the comfy Australian boots, smack dab in the middle of Yorkville (23 St Thomas St)!

Let me know in the comments!

Wishlist: Hunter “Lapins” Lace Up High Heel Rubber Boots

I know that we just got our first taste of summer this year, but I’m already moving on to fall. Mostly, because I live in Canada, and the truth is – sooner, rather than later, cold weather will prevail…no matter how hard I stomp my flip-flopped feet.

And this fall season, I seriously want to stomp around in these hawt babies. Hunter “Lapins” Lace-up High Heel Rubber Boots ($225 USD, also come in Dark Olive and Navy). You read it right. HIGH. HEEL. RUBBER. BOOTS. Where have you been all my life?

The hunt for these Hunters is now in full effect. If you live in Toronto, and know where I can acquire these babies, please be a pal and let me know. Because as much as I love these boots, I don’t think I’m ready to buy them online just yet. What if they don’t fit? What if…Ok, yeah…the only concern for me here, is whether or not they will fit. That’s all.

So what do you think about these? Is it too early to care? Are they hideous? Are they lovely? Let me know what you think in the comments, or do the poll-thing below.

These boots are...

Ecco Fall 2011 Preview

Back in my Texas days, I could wear the most ridiculously uncomfortable heels daily without any repercussions (I drove everywhere). Also, winters there are virtually non-existent…so the salt/slush problems that we face in Canada aren’t even an issue there. But in Toronto…The longer I live in Toronto, the more comfort-minded I become…though definitely not to the point of not caring about style. So in a battle of comfort vs. style, which one do you choose? Apparently, you can have both!

Last week, when I laid eyes on Ecco’s Fall 2011 collection of leather boots, some water-resistant, some with bendable (read: comfortable as all hell) soles, others with thick rubber tread, guaranteeing that you won’t be slipping all over the place or freezing your toes off on those snowy days, I was completely smitten and confused. Smitten, because the selection looked hella-stylish, confused, because…stylish, functional, AND comfortable did not exist in my winter shoe-wardrobe until now.

Though it was hard to choose, my favorite style was definitely the fur-lined, wool-insoled, rubber treaded Leros boot (below). Warm, comfy, and stylish? Could there be a more perfect combination? It arrives in stores in August, and I will make sure to scoop it up before my size sells out.

I also got to check out Ecco’s limited edition La Granda styles, in mustard-colored leather (below), and in olive green lace-up ankle bootie. Available in the month of September only, and only online! If you want those babies to be yours, you’d better set a calendar reminder for Septemer 1st.

La Granda

Apart from the kick-ass boots, Ecco Fall 2011 collection will include some amazing leather bags – slouchy, structured, messenger or hobo – whatever your flavor, there’s a bag for everyone. My personal fave was the ladylike Medina purse (below) in cognac leather – the quality, the stitching, and of course, the style of this bag were impeccable, making it a must-buy come fall.

Do you own any Ecco shoes? As an Ecco-newbie, I’d love to hear your stories. Share in the comments.

Roots Spring 2011 Collection

Is there a brand more Canadian than Roots? With the exception of the signature HBC stripes, Roots is a company I think of, when I think of Canadiana. But looking at their Spring 2011 collection – no maple leafs in sight, all I could think of was…STYLISH!

Roots shoes and bags have become increasingly popular in the last few years - mainly because of the quality (which is superb), and the variety of styles available. Admittedly, though I don’t own any Roots leather pieces of my own, I was really impressed with the company’s Spring 2011 collection – supple leathers in colors ranging from sandy brown to hot pink, comfy-looking (and yet still stylin’) boots, leather vests, sophisticated shapes, and clothes that are perfect for layering. Impressive, indeed.

My favorite pieces were definitely the ones made with colorful leathers…yellow, orange, pink, and camel - amazing for those sunny days ahead! The below two-tone messenger bag was one of my faves – a perfect blast of color for practically any outfit, no?

So if you haven’t checked out Roots Spring 2011offerings yet, make sure to stop by a store near you, because beyond the usual medley of hoodies and athletic pants, their leather goods might just make you rethink your next designer bag purchase – the quality of leather is that good.

Shopping: Chanel Paris – Moscow Rubber Boots

Do you love Chanel? Are you a size 37? If you said yes to both questions, then you might just be in luck! A couple of days ago, I spotted these amazing fur-lined Chanel rubber boots from the coveted Paris-Moscow collection at Winners on College St. Perfect for winter! And though these beauties were deeply discounted, Chanel does not come cheap…and these will set you back $799 CAD (before tax).

These boots are definitely not for everyone, but if you do end up bringing these home, I will be eternally jealous. Good luck!

What I Wore: Dancing in the Rain

It finally rained last weekend! And what does that mean? That means, I finally got to wear my Cougar rain boots! Every time I saw a puddle, I jumped in. No wet spot on the road went unexplored. The boots were (obviously) waterproof and very toasty, but the main thing is…they were comfortable to boot! Wore them all day Sunday, and didn’t want to take them off!

And the best part is, with Cougar, comfort doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style! I love the look of these REGAL biker-inspired lovelies. And le boyfriend adores them! Finally, there’s a pair of boots in my closet that don’t make his face twitch in confusion.

Thanks, Matchstick and Cougar, for keeping my feet dry and warm this Fall!

PS. If you are interested in trying Cougar boots or have bought them in the past, please fill out this quick survey. For every survey completed, Matchstick will donate $2 to The Redwood haven, which helps abused women and children. Thank you all in advance!

A Woman’s Right to Boots

Remember that Sex and The City episode called “A Woman’s Right to Shoes”? Carrie goes to a baby-party, Carrie is made to take her shoes off before stepping in, Carrie’s shoes go missing, Carrie is forced to wear the house owner’s ugly tennis shoes, Carrie is shamed for her extravagant taste in shoes by the house owner, Carrie marries self and puts stolen Manolos on gift registry, House owner buys Carrie a wedding gift – replacement of the stolen Manolos.

Whew! That was a lot of “Carries”! But the point is…I lost my boots this weekend, and I am somewhat inconsolable. No, they weren’t Manolos, and no, they weren’t stolen at a party where my so-called friend told me to take them off, and then proceeded to shoe-shame me. They were my favorite (current) pair of camel wedges from Zara that I got on sale last season - but that doesn’t make them any less special.

My boots were in a shoe bag in the back of a ZipCar, and I totally forgot to grab them when we parked. Later on, someone posted a “found” notice on ZipCar’s website, but later on, when le boyfriend and I went back to check on my boots, they were gone. So between the person that found them and us going back to the car, someone who rented the car took my boots with them. And I mean, really…who takes another person’s shoes? Who?

So, the boots still haven’t turned up, and I am left looking for a replacement pair…all that on the heels of my shoe-repairman telling me that it will cost me $60 to fix last year’s favorite over the knee pair. I guess when it rains, it pours.

Have you ever lost your favorite pair and what did you do to cope? Share your stories in the comments.

What I Wore: Cougar Boots

It was so rainy yesterday, and my shoes were soaking wet by the time I got home. Not a good feeling, let me tell ya! But then, as I walked in to the lobby in my wet shoes, the concierge informed me that…I’ve got mail! Definitely not “E”-type! It was a huge box full of lovely goodies from Cougar

My favorite part of the package are these amazing Regal Cougar rain boots! These are simply perfect for schlepping around on rainy days, without having to sacrifice an ounce of style! Mud and puddles, here I come!!!

Thanks, Cougar and Matchstick for the lovely gift! Looking forward to taking these babies for a spin around town.

Shopping: First Dr. Martens Store in Canada

Fall is upon us, and just like many others, I am embarking on a new footwear search. This year I vowed to buy something practical for Toronto winters, something sensible, with a stylish kick. And after visiting Canada’s first standalone Dr. Martens store at 391 Queen St. West, I think my search is over.

The shop’s walls are lined top to bottom with different styles and colors of the iconic grunge-fave shoe, and the whole feel is like being in a candy shop – just take your pick. There are girly shoes – with floral and paisley designs (my fave), the “originals”, the “Made in Britain” pairs, and some not-so-Doc looking Doc Martens. I was also told that most styles available worldwide will be sold at the Toronto store…all neatly lined up under one roof.

I also got to see the Spring 2011 lineup of Docs, which included the below pony hair leopard print styles, which I believe were made in collaboration with Opening Ceremony, some cute pastel ones…even gladiator wedge Docs! It’s pretty safe to say, that if you’re looking for a specific pair of Dr. Martens shoes, the Queen St. store will have them.

Most shoes retail between $100-$200, which is not a high price to pay for a comfy, well-made, classic boot. The company is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, so make sure to pop by and say “Happy Birthday!”.

Shopping: Fall 2010 Essentials

Here in Canada, we’ve been royally spoiled this summer – endless summer days, warm patio nights, trips to the lake, and finally some sort of resemblance of a tan! I don’t think we’ve ever had a summer this amazing! But as they say, eventually all good things come to an end. And here we are, going into another fall season, pretty hopeless after completely blocking out what it feels like to walk through slush and hurricane-like freezing winds (or is it just me?).

So in order to get excited about the inevitable chill, I thought I’d share some of my Fall 2010 Essentials with all of you (if you want to see my Fall 2009 essentials, click here). Read about them after the jump!

Organic Style: Lilly

Meet Lilly. Lilly is the girl I ran into while waiting in line at Fran’s. The first thing I noticed about her outfit is, of course, her coat. I’ve been into this trend for a while now, and seeing someone young and stylish rocking an animal print in such a casual way – I just had to stop her for a picture! Next thing I noticed were her awesome cuffed motorcycle booties – a piece I’ve been looking for forever! Her lovely Miu Miu bag, which looks worn in but not worn out (the same cannot be said about my Miu Miu), and her infectious smile complete the outfit. What are your thoughts on Lilly’s style?

Wishlist: Burberry Shearling Boots

Aren’t these Fall 2010 Burberry shearling boots just amazing? Here I am happy as as can be that it’s almost spring, and then I lay my eyes on these awesome boots, and it makes me wish it was winter all over again…but then again, I think about the slush that would ruin these beauties, and I change my mind. And then the whole thing all over again…Oy!

The good thing about all this, is that I have an entire year to look for a proper replacement – perhaps with a more practical heel. Any leads?
