Oscars 2013: Best Dressed

naomi-watts-oscars-2013-armani-prive

While many were declaring Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence their best-dressed, and while I totally can see where they were coming from, I wasn’t a fan. They looked fab, BUT…in  my opinion, Naomi Watts killed it! I mean, just look at her in that stunning Armani Privé gown! The neckline is complicated, but doesn’t overwhelm her, the dress fits like a glove, but isn’t too tight, her accessories are understated, and her hair and makeup – perfection. THIS is how you do the Oscars!

The rest of my list includes Alicia Vikander in an intricate pastel Elie Saab gown (look at that face!), Kerry Washington (who is my new Diane Kruger) in an embellished Miu Miu number despite the fact that it didn’t look as good in photos as it did on TV, Jennifer Hudson in a sequined blue Roberto Cavalli dress, and Jennifer Garner (I know, I’m surprised too!) in a ruffled Gucci number with a stunning statement necklace.

So what about you? Who were your best-dressed? Discuss in the comments!

SAG Awards 2013: The Good, The Bad, and The Boring

sag-awards-2013-nicole-kidman-vivienne-westwood

I don’t know if it’s just me, but SAG Awards this year were really short on the wow factor. Too much boring black, ill-fitting gowns galore, and as a result someone I find super annoying is my choice for Best Dressed of the night. What is happening?! Anyway…here’s my Good, Bad, and Ugly Boring line up for the night.

GOOD: Giuliana Rancic

As annoying as I find her, this vibrant blue Max Azria Atelier gown is both simple and simply stunning. I love the unembellished black (navy?) belt, her understated jewellery, and the messy up-do. Good job, Giuliana’s stylist!

Best Dressed: White House Correspondents Dinner 2012

leslie-mann-white-house-dinner

Only once I was done putting together the photos of my Best Dressed picks from the 2012 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, did I realize that all the ladies represented are blondes. And as such, is this not the best fantasy Real Housewives cast you’ve ever seen? I mean, we’ve got funny ladies Leslie Mann and Elizabeth Banks (sisters in my script), their spoiled and angsty teenage niece Dakota Fanning (in a gorgeous Prada frock to boot), the adorable preggo girl-next-door Reese Witherspoon (who is secretly a backstabbing biatch), and Kate Hudson - a quirky hippie neighbor (like Phoebe, but rich…obvi). I would totally watch that show! Wouldn’t you?

Back to the clothes. I like what these ladies wore. Also…which housewife is most likely to have an on-camera breakdown? Which housewife is sleeping with Dakota’s teenage boyfriend? And WHY isn’t this a show already?

Golden Globes 2011: Best Dressed

The moment I laid eyes on Kyra Sedgwick’s bohemian Emilio Pucci number, I was in marigold heaven. Adore the color, the ruffle detailing, the turquoise jewelry, and the simple hair and makeup. This look is perfect to remind me of the sunny days ahead! And therefore, Kyra is my best-dressed pick for this year’s Golden Globes. What about you? Did you like her dress? Who made your best-dressed list this year?

2010 CFDA Fashion Awards: Noteworthy

Lincoln Center’s 2010 CFDA Fashion Awards are usually a sight for sore eyes of the fashion-obsessed. This year’s event, though brought out some major star power, did not necessarily impress in the style department. Perhaps it’s just me, but a lot of the dresses were “been there worn that”, and majorly lacked the “wow” factor.

But among the bad and the boring, there were a few ladies (and gents) that looked both interesting and stylish.

SJP attended wearing Alexander McQueen. The actress honored the late McQueen with a speech and runway show, so the dress was both an appropriate and a touching gesture.

Two couples (well, Devon and Zac aren’t a couple-couple, but they did walk the carpet together), two gowns, great effort by both. Have been in love with Devon Aoki for the longest time, and I absolutely adore her Posen gown, her man-candy (Zac Posen as an accessory, anyone?), and her makeup. As for Iman, I don’t necessarily love this Giambattista Valli dress – but it’s Iman…and David Bowie is her husband and date. And she snagged the “Fashion Icon” award. Enough said.

This being Fashion Awards, there was no shortage of supermodels in attendance. My personal favorites were Irina Lazareanu in Philip Lim, fellow Canadian Jessica Stam in Yigal Azrouel, and Michael Kors’ favorite Carmen Kass showing off her sexy back.

The two outfits that definitely elicited emotion, were worn by Dree Hemingway (yes, that Hemingway), and Jessica Biel. I don’t know if it’s Dree’s hair accessory, but I am a bit undecided about her CFDA getup…perhaps she should’ve pressed her suit better, before wearing it? As for Biel, I think the fact that I don’t particularly like her as an actress (or her fashion history), is clouding my judgement. I do, in fact, like this citrus-colored DVF dress, and can imagine someone like Nicole Richie rocking it without much criticism…so I think I’ll give this one thumbs-up for effort. Though I still think she’s a crappy actress (Easy Virtue made me want to stab both my eardrums and my eyes out).

So what did you think about 2010 CFDAs? Was your favorite not listed? Let me know in the comments!

The Met’s Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best

Wow, with the exception of Coco Rocha’s Zac Posen aqua-delic gown, my other Best Dressed picks are all solids. Oh my! And while I do believe that it’s best to be brave for an event like the Met’s Gala, I cannot help but be drawn and inspired by these ladies (and gentleman). It is my Best Dressed list, after all, so please don’t hate me too much if we don’t see eye to eye.

Rocha’s Zac Posen gown is absolutely beautiful! I think it was a brave pick and I love Coco for it! My all-time fave Diane Kruger in Calvin Klein and her cute boyfriend Joshua Jackson both sizzled on the red carpet, and though her dress is very similar to the one Ashley Olsen wore last year, I think Diane makes it look fresh for 2010 with her minimalistic hair and accessories.

Kerry Washington in Thakoon for Gap looked red-hot, while Rachel Weisz in custom Oscar de la Renta looked so pretty and radiant – I had to include her in the lineup! And finally, Zoe…looking statuesque and gorgeous in her one-shouldered Calvin Klein gown - simplicity never looked better.

Do you agree with my picks? Do you think they are too safe? Sound off in the comments. Next up – the bold and the brave of the Met’s 2010 Gala!

Oscars 2010: Best Dressed

Ruffles, and Notten, and Kruger, oh my! It wasn’t too tough to choose my fave four ladies on the Oscars red carpet last night, since so many actresses opted for pretty, but safe gowns, that only elicited a reaction of “meh” from me and my. Not so with these four ladies. My favorite of the night was Vera Farmiga’s ruffly fuchsia frock. Ruffles are tricky, and not everyone can pull them off without looking overpowered, but Farmiga managed to look fresh, stunning, and definitely not safe or meh. Finally, someone with a bit of imagination and guts on the red carpet!

The same can be said about Maggie Gyllenhaal. The aquatic print, the streamlined cut, the pink lips – it all adds up to an outfit that could look all sots of bad on a wrong person, but on Maggie it’s perfection (if only slightly too wrinkled for my taste). I loved her Dries Van Notten abstract print dress the moment I saw it!

It took me a bit longer to love Diane Kruger’s Chanel Haute Couture pick. The midsection ruffles appeared to look distracting at first, but the confidence with which she wore it, and the gorgeous back of her dress, made me love it the more I saw it! I’ve mentioned before that Diane doesn’t have a stylist, and on this occasion (as with many others), I fully support her gown choice! Plus, Lucky Magazine, reported that Kruger did her own makeup for the big night! How cool is that? I think she did a great job!

My final best dressed pick is Zoe Saldana. Saldana’s Golden Globes dress was not a safe choice, and neither is her Oscars Givenchy gown. It’s pouffy, with a bejeweled bodice, and with what looks like pom-poms all over the train of her skirt, but the color looks fantastic with her complexion, the “pom-poms” look fun and intricate, and I happen to love the blingy neckline. It’s fun to look at, and I am sure it was fun to wear!
