Holidays 2012: Canadian Fashion Insiders’ Gift Guide Part Two

Canadian-Fashion-Insiders-Gift-Guide-Holidays-2012-Ryan-Michael-Cheung-final

Welcome to part two of our Canadian Fashion Insiders’ Gift Guide! If you are still on the hunt for that perfect gift this holiday season, make sure to check out our experts’ picks for some fun and fresh gift ideas. Whether you are looking for something stylish, practical, or simply adorable, we’ve got you covered!

1. Ryan Michael Cheung, Online Editor, FLARE Magazine

This dapper FLARE editor sure knows what he wants. Ryan’s simple and classic wishlist items are just as understated and cool as the man himself. So if you are shopping for Mr. Cheung this holiday season, grab him a Casio-inspired Neuvo watch in bronze, a Tivoli Audio Model One Radio, or some letter-pressed stationery from Terrapin Stationers, and watch his face light up.

In turn, Ryan will be giving some pretty kick-ass gifts of his own! “I had my jet-set friend Andrew in mind when creating this bag for the December issue gift guide. I upgraded the classic Banff style with a can’t-miss-hit of oxblood (easy to spot at baggage claim) and preppy monogram to make it personal,” – shared Ryan. And who wouldn’t love a personalized Roots bag?! I know I would! He’ll also be taking a friend to see the Christmas classic The Nutcracker, as well as gifting a copy of Vogue’s latest book – The Editor’s Eye to a “fashion addict” friend.

As for Ryan’s top three places to shop for gifts, he counts Drake General Store, Restoration Hardware, and Club Monaco among his favourites, so take note.

2. Talia Brown, Stylist

“Growing up in the North, Holiday spirt was sprung with the dusting of the snow, the smell of the fire and the taste of good old fashioned cocoa. Here in Toronto you, can feel and see the joy in the streets, the eye candy of the window displays and of course the music that just becomes part of the movement. The hustle and bustle, the busyness of the shoppers, all in good spirit, of course.”

When I first met Talia, I was smitten with her sweet and bubbly personality, and her talent for styling. This holiday season, Talia is wishing for a perfect pair of rag & bone ankle booties, a Chibi Lady purse by ela in rose gold, and a gorgeous lace dress from LOVER. Ever the stylist, the three pieces go really well together and make for an amazing holiday outfit. Here’s hoping she gets it all!

On Talia’s shopping list this season are adorable (and yummy) gifts that she’ll be sharing with her loved ones, like the Peppermint Bark from Williams-Sonoma, the limited edition Missoni x Holt Renfrew stuffed animals (they are the cutest!), and luxurious lipstick from YSL, perfectly matched to her girlfriends’ personalities.

Talia will be doing some holiday shopping at MoRoCo Chocolat, The Cashmere Shop, and Bicyclette this holiday season.

Giveaway: Bloggers Love To Shop!!!

ford-canada-vaughan-mills-shopping-bloggers-trip

Last Saturday, Kim, Anita, Gracie, Hawley and I jumped into our comfy Ford Escape and set out on a mini road trip to Vaughan Mills Mall armed with gift cards and the mall’s new social shopping app to do some pre Toronto Fashion Week shopping. Our mission – find a perfect fashion week outfit. Dying to check out Holts Last Call and J.Crew outlets, we entered the mall pretty much running, grabbed some Starbucks for energy, and hit the floor!

Three hours later and still at Holts Last Call, looking through rows of Tom Ford, Alexander Wang, LINE Knitwear, Prada, and so much more, the girls and I finally made our first purchases. Anita – a gorgeous Jil Sander blazer for $240 (originally $3000!), Gracie – the sexiest pair of Tom Ford heels I’ve ever seen, Kim – a skin-tight A.L.C. leather dress pretty much made for her, Hawley – a Philip Lim sweater, and a cool burgundy hat, and last but not least, I picked up a green fish scale Prada clutch, and a stunning Maryam Keyhani necklace…each for a fraction of an original price. SCORE!

Using the mobile shopping app on our phones, we were able to find our next stops in no time – J.Crew outlet and Joe Fresh store, where we did some more damage. Lucky for us, the app advised us of the extra 20% off at J.Crew, which we made sure to take advantage of!

When it was time to leave, we stuffed our numerous bags into our Ford Escape, typed in our next destination’s address into the GPS, and set off for Toronto, happy to know that each one of us found some amazing deals, and that come fashion week, we won’t be standing in front of our respective closets having nothing to wear!

Four Girls, Three Blogs, and Three Years of Style!

three-years-of-style-thompson-rooftop-party

Last week, a group of incredibly stylish Toronto lovelies took the Thompson Hotel Rooftop by a storm! Yes, I am talking about the Three Years of Style attendees…otherwise known as the readers and supporters of Style Blog, The Backseat Stylers, and The Souls of My Shoes – the three little fashion blogs that could.

Kim, Sharon, Tara, and I greeted our guests with fun swag bags, filled to the brim with goodies like Ardell eyelashes, eLUXE discount cards, essence cosmetics make-up, FLARE Magazine‘s August 2012 issue, Goody Double Wear elastics, John Frieda hair products, Nella Bella handbag hooks, Roots iTunes playlist redemption codes, Tweezerman tweezers, and Vitamin Water Zero. Pretty awesome, if I may say so myself.

Our guests came dressed to the nines, ready to face off for those coveted “Most Stylish” prizes. But even knowing the number of people that have RSVP’d for our little soiree ahead of time could not prepare us for the maelstorm of stylishness and beautimosity that ensued…even Thomspon Hotel’s rooftop management noted that they haven’t seen a group this stylish in a while! You all looked so good, that it was a really tough call to make. But after some deliberating, we chose our 4 most stylish.

Aya McMillan took home the grand prize consisting of a $250 gift card from eLUXE and a Nella Bella bag, while runners up Jessica Chiu, Liane Fong and Diego R each walked away with $100 from Danier Leather, Roots, and Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

Our last prize of the night – a coveted $550 LINE Knitwear leather jacket, generously gifted to us by designers John Muscat and Jennifer Wells, was a ballot draw, won by the luckiest girl in the world – Wendy Leung, who dashed other hopeful attendees’ dreams of winning that perfect fall piece.

The rest of the night was a blur. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of bloggers friends to ring in another year of blogging with. Kim, Sharon, and Tara have been amazing blogger-buds and event wing-women to me over the years, and it felt awesome being able to celebrate our success together.

Additionally, seeing so many of you at our party, taking the time to support our blogs felt surreal, humbling, and just really incredible. I got to meet some of my lovely readers, hang out with bloggers and industry insiders that never fail to inspire me, and spend some time reflecting on the three amazing years, doing what I love, and sharing my passion with all of you. Whether you were at our party in person, or in spirit, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Thank you for making our blog birthday party fun and exciting, thank you for tuning in week after week, and thank you for supporting our blogs and our dreams! I hope to see you again next year!

Style-Off: Libertine for Aldo Rise

aldo-rise-style-off

Welcome to the 2nd installment of Style Blog Style-Off, featuring two of my fave Toronto bloggers – Anita Clarke and Gracie Carroll, rocking the hottest shoe collab (possibly) ever! This week’s Style-Off’s challenge was to style a pair of amazing (and surprisingly comfy) Libertine for Aldo Rise ($155) black and white platform wedges, and though I might be biased here…but I think we did pretty darn great! Funny thing…looks like neon green is definitely having its moment in the spotlight, because we certainly did not plan on matching our accent colors!

As with the last Style-Off, the winner gets the bragging rights, and a free drink. And to up the stakes some more, we’ve decided that all the Style-Off winners will get to go face-off in the final Style-Off challenge a few months later. Sounds good? Choose wisely, and vote for your favorite look below!

Who Gets Your Vote?

Halloween 2011: Toronto Fashion Heroes

Year after year, I complain until my friends’ ears bleed about the crappy polyester slutty (insert a profession/object here) costumes that invade the streets of Toronto on Halloween. And this year is no different. I am sure the parties and clubs will be full of nurses, cops, flight attendants, etc. in cheap flammable outfits, and once again I will be wearing something that I pulled out of my own closet.

This year, I wanted to wear a costume that had something to do with fashion…avoiding the usual cliches of donning the ”Anna” wig, the ”Audrey” LBD, or something else equally predictable. And then, last weekend, while browsing the Halloween section at the Blue Banana, the inspiration came…in shape of a fake beard. My mind immediately went to the now infamous Toronto Life editor – Kevin Naulls. “Why hasn’t anyone else thought of dressing up as Toronto fashion notables?” – I thought. This city is full of vibrant characters equally as intriguing as Mr Lagerfeld, and Ms Wintour…or at least interesting enough to Toronto folks. And so this post was born.

If you’re not from Toronto, you might not be familiar with some of the people below…but I am sure you can conjure up costumes of your local fashion superstars too. All it takes is a little imagination.

1. Jeanne Beker – Fashion Television Host

Is there a person more recognizable in Canadian fashion than Jeanne Beker? I don’t think so. Jeanne Beker is an institution. And as such, she’s an easy target for Halloween costuming (is that a word?). Her costume is actually super easy to put together. If you aren’t blessed with a dark brown mane like Jeanne’s, pick up a wig with her signature blunt bangs. Grab a black shift dress (perhaps from her EDIT collection at The Bay?), cinch it with a cool belt (she wears one with a dinosaur buckle), pair with sky-high black pumps, grab a mic, and you’re ready to go find yourself in fashion!

2. Kevin Naulls – Toronto Life Online Editor

Main source of inspiration for this post, and a man that makes socialites tremble with fear and/or anger at his sometimes cutting, always hillarious photo captions. All you need to be Mr Naulls for a night is a good fake beard, something plaid (shirt, trench, scarf – use your imagination, people!), fun socks that he’s often spotted wearing, and a copy of Toronto Life in hand. Kevin, is that you?

3. Anita Clarke – Blogger

Bloggers are a huge trend, they say…and a trend that won’t be going away any time soon (we hope). And what blogger is more fun to emulate than Anita? My favorite (and most Halloween-appropriate) look of Anita’s of late was her fab Mark Fast jumpsuit – part catwoman, part fashion superhero, if you’ve got the body to rock it, then, I say, go for it! Don’t forget an awesome pair of shades, and a pair of Dean Davidson earrings to complete the look. Meow!

4. Sarah Nicole Prickett – Writer

SNP’s raw and insightful writing is the reason we tune in to her personal blog week after week. But it’s her killer style that makes us think she’d be so fun to wear for Halloween (err…not literally, of course). If imitation is a sincerest form of flattery, flatter her by wearing a rad pair of wedges (straps, peep toes, stripes…), tee off your boyfriend’s back, leather skirt layered over another skirt, and a swipe of red lipstick.

Finish the look with a tousled blonde wig (that you can trim to make it look slightly uneven). Use pink (or purple) highlighter to give the wig some fun highlights. And though we’ve seen SNP smile many a time, your costume won’t be complete without her signature smirk.

5. Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong – Designers of Greta Constantine

We see this designer duo everywhere! At industry parties, product launches…and of course, at their very own fashion shows. And their unmistakable style makes them perfect costume material! If you are looking to dress up with a friend – this is a great costume idea for you! Both Kirk and Stephen wear a lot of their own designs, so definitely go for something flowy and layered, in shades of black, white, and grey (leather shorts for Kirk, sweat pants for Stephen). Wear a pair of aviator glasses as Stephen, and thick black rims as Kirk. For Kirk’s outfit, you might want to find a paperboy hat similar to the ones he likes to wear, and for Stephen’s topper, choose a trucker hat, or just wear your hair in a knot on top of your head.

Hope you enjoyed this costume post. What other Canadian celebs Halloween costumes would you like to see? Share in the comments!
