CHANEL Boutique Opens at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto!

131127-Chanel-415e

I may or may not have let out a loud squeal when a certain CHANEL invitation appeared on my doorstep – my name boldly calligraphed on the envelope. There was no mistaking it – I was being summoned to the opening of the new CHANEL boutique at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. After doing the happy dance, then panicking about not knowing what to wear, then pulling out my favourite pair of CHANEL glass slippers heels, this Cinderella was ready to party at the poshest boutique in town.

Of course, when it comes to parties, CHANEL knows how to throw a damn good one. Packed to the brim with uber-stylish attendees, the new 3000-square foot boutique was overflowing with energetic vibes…or was it the kinetic energy of too many credit cards being swiped along with the most incredible bags and accessories flying off the shelves? No matter, along with my blogging buds Anita, Gracie, and Jay, I perused the boutique’s extensive selection of brooches (super versatile!), drooled over stunning footwear, and played with CHANEL coin purses, in hopes of snagging one for Christmas. We sat on purple tweed couches, piled into the gigantic CHANEL fitting room for a photo session with the Beckerman girls, and drooled some more. It was a blast.

Designed by Peter Marino, the boutique space itself was, as expected, stunning. Inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s legendary Paris apartment on rue Cambon, with artful window displays, and oodles of merchandise lining the glossy shelves, I never wanted to leave. Speaking of merchandise…on opening night, the CHANEL boutique at Yorkdale had a huge selection of (almost) everything available. Now that it’s been a few days since opening, I am not sure if it’s still the case, but it’s certainly worth a visit if you are looking for variety…and it’s certainly worth a visit if you’re simply a fan of the brand. You won’t be disappointed – that is a promise!

Shopping: ALDO A-List Party at Yorkdale

Last week, amidst WMCFW craziness, ALDO Yorkdale held a fun party for its A-List customers, complete with DJ Dirty Dale on turntables, yummy refreshments from Purdy’s, gift card giveaways, and discounts galore! I was invited to co-host the party with the lovely duo from Styld By Two – Manuela and Cindy, and wore my (new) favourite (and this season’s must-have) over-the-knee boots from the fall collection. Designer Diego Fuchs of BLAK.I stopped by with his wife and checked out ALDO’s coolest styles for him and for her. My fave photographer Max Kopanygin was also there, taking photos of the stylish attendees, and indulging me in my silly photo ops. Did you know that ALDO carries wigs for Halloween?! Well, they do…and clip-on bangs too, in case you wanted to change up your look like I did (see below).

The event was held at ALDO’s beautiful Toronto flagship store at Yorkdale, that has re-opened this summer after massive renovations. Remember that party? Well, not much has changed since June – this store still carries the most extensive selection of ALDO shoes and accessories, and the shop’s sales associates are just as stylish and are as helpful as ever.

Shopping for shoes at this location is truly a fun experience, but especially so when a dance party is involved! The store remained open for its A-List guests even after the shopping centre closed down for the night (who hasn’t dreamt of staying at the mall after hours?!), so we kept our dancing shoes boots on until 10pm.

Toronto Fashion Week: Joe Fresh Spring 2014 Collection

joe-fresh-spring-2014-collection-main3

If there’s one thing that is certain during WMCFW is that Joe Fresh show will always draw the biggest crowd. This season was no exception. With a packed front row that included actress Elisha Cuthbert (I miss Happy Endings!) and her beau Dion Phaneuf, his Maple Leafs teammate Joffrey Lupul, Joe Mimran’s designer wife Kimberly Newport-Mimran, among others, and Canadian beauties Alana Zimmer and Heather Marks strutting their stuff on the catwalk to Britney’s latest and super catchy “Work Bitch”, this one was the best show for people-watching. And people-watch I did, from my front row seat…in the photographer’s pit.

I put my new Canon Blogtography skills to good use, and snapped away as models walked down the runway, showing off what seemed like an endless lineup of looks that will be in stores come Spring 2014. While the majority of the collection was heavy on the navy (colour, not naval warfare), my favourite pieces (aka what I’ll be stalking next spring) included the red floral dress with plenty of slits to show off the gams, silver leather (pleather?) two-piece skirt suit, red leather dress and pants, shiny black (but also iridescent) tulip skirt, Japanese-print pajama-like ensemble, and a Chanel-esque black and white jacket.

Denim was also ever-present this season. Far from plain and boring, Joe Fresh Spring 2014 denim looks included lace applique, jumpsuits, frayed hems, acid wash, as well as camo, stripe and floral print. The rest of the collection was more restrained, and delivered what most Joe Fresh customers expect from the brand – classic suiting, and work-appropriate blouses, dresses, and skirts. And while I can’t resist a new pair of simple Joe Fresh slacks each season, I do hope that most of the more intriguing runway pieces make it into production. Fingers crossed!

Toronto Fashion Week: the shOws Spring 2014 Photo Diary

bellavance-nyc-spring-2013

Earlier this month, I was invited to participate in a Toronto Fashion Week Photography Bootcamp with Steve Carty and Canon Canada. The 3-hour hands-on session was meant to give us some useful tips for shooting runway photos, prep us to deal with less than ideal lighting and less than ideal seating, and teach us a few more Canon Blogtography tricks on getting the best possible photos under (fashion week) pressure.

Well, last week all of those lessons came in handy when I attended the shOws Spring 2014! As usual, showcasing a handful of seriously talented Canadian designers (Bellavance NYC, Calla, Jeremy Laing, and Steven Tai), the shOws was every Canadian fashion junkie’s dream event of the season, and I came prepared with my Canon EOS Rebel SL1 in tow.

While I couldn’t take Steve Carty’s advice of sitting in the pit during the show (seriously, if you want the best pics without much effort – the photographers’ pit is where it’s at), I still managed to take some fun detail shots from my front row seat. If you are looking for tips on how to shoot fashion shows here are few I learned from the great Steve Carty!

Toronto Fashion Week: Pink Tartan Spring 2014

pink-tartan-spring-2014-collection-

Be still my beating heart…Kim Newport-Mimran has done it again! After wrapping up my first day at the tents, I must admit that Pink Tartan Spring 2014 show was my personal highlight of day 1 of World MasterCard Fashion Week. I made sure to ditch my seat for the discomfort of the photographers’ pit to get some usable shots for my site, because I just knew it was going to be great…and it was! With all the monochromatic looks, stripes galore, splashes of neon, and that Warhol-esque flower print, there was a lot to love…and there was a lot to covet…

Though it has not veered too far off the tried and true Pink Tartan formula of classic separates, fancy gowns, and ladylike everything else, Spring 2014 collection felt stronger because of its pared down elegance, no frills attached. Every piece sent down the runway breathed chic simplicity; even in neon yellow, or full-on leather…it was still pure Pink Tartan. I loved the mod feel of this Edie Sedgwick-inspired collection, I’ve always been a hoarder of all things black and white and striped, so every print I saw was totally up my alley. Wearable definitely comes to mind when describing the collection, which is probably why I am truly obsessed with half of it…because I can already see these pieces working their way into my life…seamlessly.

Nicholas Kirkwood and Sophia Webster Party at The Bay in Toronto!

nicholas-kirkwood-sophia-webster-the-room-2013-24

The Bay is clearly ON FIRE this month! After hosting the lovely designer Sam Edelman two weeks ago, the magnificent department store welcomed not one, but two uber-talented British shoe designers at Toronto’s newly renovated “largest in Canada” shoe floor – Nicholas Kirkwood and Sophia Webster.

Having met Kirkwood a couple of years ago at the same location, I felt pretty lucky to get another chance to chat with this young and inspiring designer. He was just as approachable and easy to talk to as he was back in 2010, and as you can tell from that pic above, we are now BFFs for life! True story*. I also got to meet Sophia Webster, who used to be Kirkwood’s design assistant, and who has obviously learned a lot from her mentor – her shoes, just like his, are truly drool-worthy and must find their way to my wardrobe one of these days…soon.

Like most parties at The Room, this one was THE place to be if you’re into people-watching, what with stunning clothes, beautiful shoes, and notable attendees like Bonnie Brooks (in a pair of Kirkwood zig-zag shoes), Greta Constantine designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong, Suzanne Rogers, Stacey Kimel, and Kim Tanenbaum, mingling with the guests of honor, who were both swarmed by an army of adoring fans for the majority of the night.

I know I’ve said this before, but if you still haven’t been to the gleaming new shoe floor at The Bay (Queen St and Yorkdale), then you are truly missing out. Even without designers in attendance, the shoe department is a sight to behold…and a place to find the most amazing shoes. My BFF Nicholas Kirkwood totally loved it and so will you.

*Not a true story
