Oscars 2010: Best Dressed

Ruffles, and Notten, and Kruger, oh my! It wasn’t too tough to choose my fave four ladies on the Oscars red carpet last night, since so many actresses opted for pretty, but safe gowns, that only elicited a reaction of “meh” from me and my. Not so with these four ladies. My favorite of the night was Vera Farmiga’s ruffly fuchsia frock. Ruffles are tricky, and not everyone can pull them off without looking overpowered, but Farmiga managed to look fresh, stunning, and definitely not safe or meh. Finally, someone with a bit of imagination and guts on the red carpet!

The same can be said about Maggie Gyllenhaal. The aquatic print, the streamlined cut, the pink lips – it all adds up to an outfit that could look all sots of bad on a wrong person, but on Maggie it’s perfection (if only slightly too wrinkled for my taste). I loved her Dries Van Notten abstract print dress the moment I saw it!

It took me a bit longer to love Diane Kruger’s Chanel Haute Couture pick. The midsection ruffles appeared to look distracting at first, but the confidence with which she wore it, and the gorgeous back of her dress, made me love it the more I saw it! I’ve mentioned before that Diane doesn’t have a stylist, and on this occasion (as with many others), I fully support her gown choice! Plus, Lucky Magazine, reported that Kruger did her own makeup for the big night! How cool is that? I think she did a great job!

My final best dressed pick is Zoe Saldana. Saldana’s Golden Globes dress was not a safe choice, and neither is her Oscars Givenchy gown. It’s pouffy, with a bejeweled bodice, and with what looks like pom-poms all over the train of her skirt, but the color looks fantastic with her complexion, the “pom-poms” look fun and intricate, and I happen to love the blingy neckline. It’s fun to look at, and I am sure it was fun to wear!

Oscars 2010: Worst Dressed

Every year, thousands of fashionistas keep their eyes glued to their TVs in order to see Hollywood’s crème de la crème attend the biggest party of the year. You have to admit, we all watch for the dresses (well, and maybe for the Best Actor/Actress and Best Film too). And as with any party or award show, there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly. And while I won’t call any of the actresses in this post ugly, what they are in my books, is worst dressed of the Oscars 2010. You can agree or disagree in the comments!

First off it’s Sigourney Weaver. I love her as an actress and love her sense of humour (did you see her on SNL?)! But this dress, it just doesn’t seem very flattering on Sigourney. The red is too harsh against her skin, and it blends in with the carpet. If her point was to camouflage herself, she did that well. Other than that, it’s not a winner.

Next up is Charlize Theron. She is undoubtedly a beautiful woman, and I really tried to like her dress. If used right, the rosettes could be very coquette and cheeky. But this poorly pressed dress, looks like a cross between the ill-fitted (and fated) pink Gwyneth Paltrow disaster and Sonia Rykiel for H&M rosette bra, and not in a good way. To be fair, I wonder if I would hate it as much if Diane Kruger was the one wearing it?

I also tried to love Rachel McAdams’ dress. The Canadian actress has always been one of my favorite Hollywood girls, but this dress does not belong on the Academy Awards red carpet. The length, the pattern, the fit. No, no, and no.

And last, but not least – SJP. It pains me to say this, because just like thousands of other twenty-somethings, I love me some Carrie, but from head to toe, Sarah Jessica Parker’s look was a huge miss. What was up with her hair? Couldn’t someone *cough*Tom Ford*cough* wet their hands and pet her on the head? It was so embarrassing to watch her present with that frizzy halo, harsh makeup, and that not-so-flattering dress on. And next to Tom Ford, no less. I kept screaming at the TV, and hiding my face behind my hands in humiliation…for her.

What about you? Did you love any of the above? Any other dresses that you absolutely hated? Share in the comments!

Style Fille: Kristen Stewart

This past year, I’ve grown to like Kristen Stewart’s simple yet edgy style, despite my severe allergies to the movie that made her a household name. Yeah, that movie. For a while there, I kept ignoring any posts about her or Pattinson, but  this outfit at the NYC premiere of Remember Me, that stars her “maybe” boyfriend, I just couldn’t ignore. I don’t care about any of the drama, I just really love her style.

There aren’t too many people out there that can show up to an event, wearing military green lace pants (which really do sound horrible) with unkempt and what appears to be greasy hair, and a leather jacket, and still ooze style. Military is a huge trend for both Spring and Fall 2010, and so far, these pants are my favorite piece to covet. Love the way they fit her just so, and love her styling choices. It’s always so much better to under-dress than over-dress, no?

Style Fille: Nicole Richie…again

Ok, so I should probably ease up with Nicole Richie here, but I really do love the things she tends to wear, both in her daily life and in photo shoots. Like in this one. Adore her Burberry styling…and most of all, love the location of her shoot – my favorite-est place in Paris – Pont Alexandre III. Nicole, Paris and Burberry…all so very lovely.

Style Fille: Viviana Volpicella

Some people, they just have it. That certain je ne sais quoi. It makes sense that they are in fashion, because they embody it. Like Viviana Volpicella. Nothing about Viviana’s style feels forced to me. The woman can wear mustard like noone else. She can mix the craziest colors together, and not end up looking like a 5-year old. She can even wear heart-shaped sunglasses, without looking like a dimwit…which let’s face it, 99% of people with those sunglasses look like dimwits. Viviana has a style that is undeniably her own, which clearly helps if you work for Vogue Nippon! And with that killer smile of hers, it looks like she’s loving every minute of it.

All Canadian

Being Canadian is really de rigueur nowadays. It’s incredible what a little marketing can do. The Vancouver Olympics, of course, have a lot to do with it. But, credit should be given to HBC for really marketing the crap out of their Canadiana apparel. From Wayne Gretzky and Glee guys, to it-girl Rachel Bilson – The Bay clothes are all over celebs and athletes, and are selling out in stores everywhere! Over 3 million pairs of red mittens were sold to date…and still going.

As for this HBC blanket coat – I do love this coat on Rachel. Such fun colors and so very Canadian. Hmm, perhaps the All-Canadian look will catch on in the rest of the world soon enough? Until then…Go, Canada, go!

Spot On

Le boyfriend’s first reaction at seeing me in my new-ish Zara leopard print coat was sheer horror. To him, leopard print in general, translates into a trashy Eastern European woman with no taste. As a person of East European descent, I don’t take any offence to his aversion – I’ve seen my fair share of horrid use of leopard print, zebra print, etc. back home to be able to agree with him that animal prints can definitely go wrong if worn inappropriately. But… can such an awesome and stylish group as Aurora Sansone, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Viviana Volpicella, Poppy Delevigne, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld really be wrong? Sure, they could. But to me, in my humble opinion, a leopard print coat is a chic top-up to a simple outfit. And that’s that. Love it or hate it.

Shopping: Like Daughter, Like Mother

So unless you live in Alabama under a rock, you know that Canada is where it’s at! And by it, I mean the Winter Olympics! Go, Canada, Go! And because of that, The Bay and Zellers stores have been selling the official Olympic merchandise, including clothing and accessories. Not of the flag-waving-maple-leaf-wearing kind, I didn’t even pay much attention to the line, until I came back from my little Cuban getaway to discover that my mom had bought something that I liked very much!

Now the thing about my mom and I, is that she tends to steal borrow my clothes all the time, while I usually don’t go exploring in her closet – too conservative for my taste. Well, I’ll certainly be stealing borrowing this sweater from her! The whole reason she even bought this particular one, apart from her affinity for the Canadian flag-waving, was also me. Well, not me, but my shopping habits. All women’s Cowichan sweaters were sold out, and my mom bought a men’s sweater instead! Way to go mom! I am so proud!

And now that the photos of Wayne Gretzky rocking the exact same sweater have resurfaced, I think I’ll be scoring some sweet brownie points by wearing this sweater around le boyfriend. Stylish, patriotic, and Wayne Gretzky has the same one…it’s a win, win, win situation. Don’t you just love those?

Style Fille: Nicole Richie

I’ve been obsessed with denim shorts this winter. Every weekend, I’m putting on a pair of thick tights/leggings and rocking a pair of cutoffs with my fave pair of boots. I also get a feeling, that come Spring, I’ll still be as obsessed with my new-found staple as ever.

Looks like Nicole Richie loves her short shorts too. But the way she wears them…No Daisy Duke/Jessica Simpson in sight, the newly engaged Nicole actually exhudes arty hippie-ness, instead of overt sexuality, and I love it. The Winter Kate crochet vest adds some quirk to an otherwise crisp and conservative white shirt. What’s not to love?

Update: So Nicole, just like me, is apparently obsessed with her cutoffs too! Peep her adorable boho pairing at Holt Renfrew’s Winter Kate launch in Montreal! So cute!

Style Fille: Kirsten Dunst

I haven’t been a fan of Dunst’s in a long while. But once upon a time, the girl definitely had “it” power and she dressed like it too. I’m actually not hating liking this outfit, which hopefully means that Kirsten Dunst is back? Well, maybe not based on just one cute outfit, but one can hope. In my opinion, the girl is talented; so maybe this self-imposed break was good for her creativity, and soon we’ll see more inspiring outfits from her?

SAG Awards Favorites

I know that I’m a bit late on this one…but I couldn’t avoid posting about my fave SAG Awards dresses! Especially, considering the beautiful Jason Wu gown that Diane Kruger wore! Apparently, the model-turned-actress helped Wu design her marigold frock. It does remind me of that Michelle Willams dress from the Oscars, but I still love it oh-so-much! Paired with that make-up, and beautiful jewelry, I think Diane is definitely my choice for best-dressed! My list also includes Kate Hudson, in another Oscar doppelganger (remember Hillary Swank’s bum-plunging dress?), Marion Cotillard, and Sookie Anna Paquin, in a daring and very au-courant McQueen dress. Love these ladies and their choices! Didn’t do a Globes post, because most dresses were snoozefest (at least for me). SAGs, however, did not disappoint!

Are you looking forward to the Oscars’ fashion face-off? I know, I am!

Style Fille: Victoria Beckham

I’m not usually a big fan of Posh’s dressing, but in this case, I’m loving it. Not that Victoria chose something edgy or different or even interesting…no, that’s not it. What caught my eye here is her lovely Burberry Prorsum trench! It’s such a versatile piece and it’s soooo chic! Want, need, got to have!

But her best accessory in this pic is certainly Becks!

ScarJo for Mango SS2010

New pics of Scarlett Johansson landed in my inbox this morning, and I am not disappointed with this campaign. Not in the very least. Granted, we only get to see two looks from the collection so far, but the Celine-like trench-dress alone is totally worth a Mango trip! Thoughts?

Style Fille: Kim Kardashian

Ok, I never thought this day would come, but today’s Style Fille is Kim Kardashian! Sure, the girl is drop dead gorgeous (even if she’s famous for nothing but smut). But I really dig her striped tank dress, paired with a cool fringe necklace! As a self-proclaimed stripe addict, I already own a similar dress (alas with long sleeves). Will have to dust it off and wear it soon! Forgot how awesome and fresh stripes can look!
