Mary Katrantzou for Topshop!

News broke this morning that Topshop (that we finally have in Canada – hooray!) will be collaborating with London-based designer Mary Katrantzou! Katrantzou’s artfully printed frocks have first caught my attention at The Room, where I was too terrified to even glance at price tags on her beautiful pieces of art that we call dresses. And we all know that…if you’re too scared to look, sadly, you can’t afford it. So you can imagine how happy I was that after all the drooling and wishing for a chance to own a piece by Katrantzou, my dreams are (sort of) coming true!

The collection, consisting of 14(!!!) pieces is slated to drop next February, according to the Style Bubble. And though you certainly won’t be paying anywhere near regular prices for this Topshop collab, it will still cost you a pretty penny, with this dress going for GBP 350. But no matter, the die-hard Katrantzou fans will be delighted at this lovely collab, and judging from the preview pics, we’ll be getting a bang for our bucks – the preview dress looks stunning, even if it’s a little less dramatic than her original designs. But for a fraction of the price, who’s complaining?

This is definitely one of the best fast-fashion collabs ever…certainly in the same league as Lanvin for H&M. Are you as excited as I am? Share in the comments, lovelies!

What I Wore: It’s So Easy Being Green

Everyone, meet my favorite outfit ever! A little Club Monaco and Old Navy, with a sprinkle of Prada. Just the way (aha-aha) I like it.

These pants…oh, these pants! When le boyfriend doubted my sanity at Vaughan Mills’ Holts Last Call, I told him to just trust me, before I walked out rocking these babies*. And yet he still had no faith in Miuccia’s designs, or my choices. Pfft, pajama pants my foot!

Yes, these pants might resemble a certain sleeping garment, and yes, I had to alter them not once but twice to get the length just right…but all this effort is so worth it when I walk out of the house, and get admiring puzzled looks from strangers. It’s the best kind of compliment ever.

I Wore: Jacket – Club Monaco; Sweater – Old Navy; Pants, Clutch – Prada; Shoes – Nine West; Necklace – Forever21; Ring – YSL; Leather Bracelet – Danier

*To my international readers: “rocking these babies” doesn’t in any way imply rocking actual babies…it’s just another way to say “wearing these pants”, but in a more confusing manner. Kapish?

Beauty: Feather Hair Extensions

Sponsored Post

This summer, I got to try the latest hair trend that everyone seemed to be crazy about – feather hair extensions. Though I was initially skeptical, I let the pros from Donato Salon do their magic, and just like that, 5 minutes later, I had a bird in my hair! Ok, not a bird per se…but a couple of fun turquoise feathers peeking out from my mane. My extensions were bonded to my natural hair, and lasted the entire summer – through many washes, cuts, etc…I could even curl them with a curling iron if I wanted to. How awesome is that?

Now that the summer is over, you can still rock those pretty feathers in your hair, but perhaps for the cooler months, it’s best to stick to more subdued colors (I’m think of adding some brownish-yellow feathers to my hair for fall). The cool thing is – you can change-up your look as much or as little as you want. A couple of thin feathers attached to your hair could give a quick and easy update to your do, without having to resort to something as radical as actually coloring your hair. And if you are handy with the tools (or even if you’re not), it’s actually pretty simple to DIY too!

Here are the quick steps to adding some flair to your hair:

1. Place feather extension bead onto your loop tool.

2. Part out at the location at where you want your hair feathers to sit and grab about ten strands of hair and thread through the loop tool. Remember that the feather stem and your strands of hair have to fit through the bead.

3. Slide the bead off of the loop tool onto your hair and hold bead in place very close to scalp.

4. Place your finger under the bead to make room for your feathers.

5. Place stems of hair feathers into bead.

6. Clamp down to flatten bead around feather stems.

7. Gently tug on your feathers, they should not slide off. If the feathers are sliding, clamp harder to assure a tight bead fit.

8. If needed, trim off excess feather stem above bead so it doesn’t poke scalp.

9. Voila! You’re done.

For more info on feather hair extensions, or to buy the necessary tools, check out www.featherhairextensions.com.

Style Fille: Keira Knightley

I can’t decide whether I like this dress or not…or rather…I know that I like it, but there are a few things that bother me about it – like the stitching/pleating going on near her midriff. What is that? Is that supposed to look wrinkly? I just don’t know.

But the rest of it – I love! Love the criss-cross neckline (one advantage of being flat-chested), love the subtle makeup, and lovely hair…I adore her shoes…which, I might be slightly biased, because it looks like they are Pierre Hardy twins of my own golden heeled shoes

But what about you? Vote below…is this look a hit or a miss?

What I Wore: Red Hot

Well, LGFW is done and over with…for now. And I am happy to report that I have survived the waiting around, the dehydration, the pushing and the shoving, and the seat stealing. Phew! Weather was pretty sucky last week, so I don’t have too many photos to share with you. Bad blogger, I know.

Making its blog debut is my OBJECT by George Antonopoulos for Danier shirt with leather sleeves. It literally goes with everything…such an awesome purchase! Can’t wait to see what George will come up with for spring!

I also wore these J.Crew lookalike pants that cost me a whopping $11! Yup, you read it right…eleven dollars. The coat was a gift from the Old Navy dream team…and I seriously love it so much! It was tough to choose just one…especially since they have another one available in…wait for it…leopard print! But I resisted the leopard-urge, and picked up this red car coat instead. You like?

More LGFW pics and reports coming soon!

I Wore: Coat, Pants – c/o Old Navy; Shirt – OBJECT by George Antonopoulos for Danier; Necklace – c/o Caroline Neron; Shoes – Nine West; Ring – YSL; Clutch – Prada

Halloween 2011: Toronto Fashion Heroes

Year after year, I complain until my friends’ ears bleed about the crappy polyester slutty (insert a profession/object here) costumes that invade the streets of Toronto on Halloween. And this year is no different. I am sure the parties and clubs will be full of nurses, cops, flight attendants, etc. in cheap flammable outfits, and once again I will be wearing something that I pulled out of my own closet.

This year, I wanted to wear a costume that had something to do with fashion…avoiding the usual cliches of donning the ”Anna” wig, the ”Audrey” LBD, or something else equally predictable. And then, last weekend, while browsing the Halloween section at the Blue Banana, the inspiration came…in shape of a fake beard. My mind immediately went to the now infamous Toronto Life editor – Kevin Naulls. “Why hasn’t anyone else thought of dressing up as Toronto fashion notables?” – I thought. This city is full of vibrant characters equally as intriguing as Mr Lagerfeld, and Ms Wintour…or at least interesting enough to the Toronto folks. And so this post was born.

If you’re not from Toronto, you might not be familiar with some of the people below…but I am sure you can conjure up costumes of your local fashion superstars too. All it takes is a little imagination.

1. Jeanne Beker – Fashion Television Host

Is there a person more recognizable in Canadian fashion than Jeanne Beker? I don’t think so. Jeanne Beker is an institution. And as such, she’s an easy target for Halloween costuming (is that a word?). Her costume is actually super easy to put together. If you aren’t blessed with a dark brown mane like Jeanne’s, pick up a wig with her signature blunt bangs. Grab a black shift dress (perhaps from her EDIT collection at The Bay?), cinch it with a cool belt (she wears one with a dinosaur buckle), pair with sky-high black pumps, grab a mic, and you’re ready to go find yourself in fashion!

2. Kevin Naulls – Toronto Life Online Editor

Main source of inspiration for this post, and a man that makes socialites tremble with fear and/or anger at his sometimes cutting, always hillarious photo captions. All you need to be Mr Naulls for a night is a good fake beard, something plaid (shirt, trench, scarf – use your imagination, people!), fun socks that he’s often spotted wearing, and a copy of Toronto Life in hand. Kevin, is that you?

3. Anita Clarke – Blogger

Bloggers are a huge trend, they say…and a trend that won’t be going away any time soon (we hope). And what blogger is more fun to emulate than Anita? My favorite (and most Halloween-appropriate) look of Anita’s of late was her fab Mark Fast jumpsuit – part catwoman, part fashion superhero, if you’ve got the body to rock it, then, I say, go for it! Don’t forget an awesome pair of shades, and a pair of Dean Davidson earrings to complete the look. Meow!

4. Sarah Nicole Prickett – Writer

SNP’s raw and insightful writing is the reason we tune in to her personal blog week after week. But it’s her killer style that makes us think she’d be so fun to wear for Halloween (err…not literally, of course). If imitation is a sincerest form of flattery, flatter her by wearing a rad pair of wedges (straps, peep toes, stripes…), tee off your boyfriend’s back, leather skirt layered over another skirt, and a swipe of red lipstick.

Finish the look with a tousled blonde wig (that you can trim to make it look slightly uneven). Use pink (or purple) highlighter to give the wig some fun highlights. And though we’ve seen SNP smile many a time, your costume won’t be complete without her signature smirk.

5. Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong – Designers of Greta Constantine

We see this designer duo everywhere! At industry parties, product launches…and of course, at their very own fashion shows. And their unmistakable style makes them perfect costume material! If you are looking to dress up with a friend – this is a great costume idea for you! Both Kirk and Stephen wear a lot of their own designs, so definitely go for something flowy and layered, in shades of black, white, and grey (leather shorts for Kirk, sweat pants for Stephen). Wear a pair of aviator glasses as Stephen, and thick black rims as Kirk. For Kirk’s outfit, you might want to find a paperboy hat similar to the ones he likes to wear, and for Stephen’s topper, choose a trucker hat, or just wear your hair in a knot on top of your head.

Hope you enjoyed this costume post. What other Canadian celebs Halloween costumes would you like to see? Share in the comments!

What I Wore: Beauty Parler Says “I Do!”

When my friend Monica of Beauty Parler got engaged, I was so excited for her! I’ve known this stylish lady for 8 years now…pretty much ever since I’d moved here from Texas, and I just knew that her wedding was going to be incredible. Monica wore a lovely Priscilla of Boston gown, with a long Spanish veil…and she looked stunning…such a gorgeous bride!

Since I knew that her decor was going to have a lot of purple accents, choosing my outfit was a breeze. I finally got to wear my (precious) Lanvin x H&M dress! I’ve been saving it for a special-enough occasion, and what could be more special than a wedding? Le boyfriend and I danced salsa and merengue, ate Portuguese food, and had a lovely time. Plus, we might’ve gotten some pointers for our own wedding in May! Thank you, Mon and Carlos, for an amazing night!

Banana Republic Yorkdale New Concept Store Opening

Last week, I attended the opening of Banana Republic’s concept store at Yorkdale. First of all, the store is huge! If you are trying to find a particular Banana Republic piece, then this store is your best bet. But apart from the sheer enormity of the shopping space (seriously, it’s 13,855 square feet!), I fell in love with the new layout.

With a circular plaza in the middle of all the action, and small, boutique-like shops within a shop for Petites, Heritage and Monogram collections all around me, I found myself forgetting that I was still at Yorkdale. It just didn’t have that mall feeling to me.

“The new Banana Republic Yorkdale will house the full range of men’s and women’s product including the Monogram and Heritage collections, and a full assortment of accessories: jewellery, handbags, shoes, eyewear, and small leather goods. It’s a 360-degree personalized experience that’s all about ease, featuring skilled stylists that can help you interpret the latest trends and elevate your wardrobe basics, while acting as a trusted editor to help you dress for the big and small moments of your life.”

If you still haven’t stopped by the new Banana Republic Yorkdale shop, make sure to pay a visit soon. But for now, check out the photos from the opening below!

Don’t Miss This Month: Beautylicious

Beautylicious in Yorkville
October 27 – November 6th, 2011

Third annual Beautylicious event will take place in Yorkville this month, until November 6th. With top salons, spas, and wellness studios participating, you can get some kick-ass deals on spa treatments, haircuts, you name it!

This year’s price points are $30, $50, $75, and $125. Some of the hottest treatments this year include Three Zumba Fitness classes from Izzy Fitness for $30, a Shellac manicure from Sitamaa Spa for $50, a Liquid Gold Anti-Aging Facial from Esthetics of Lara for $75 and an Eyelash Extension from the Mync Lash Lounge and Brow Bar for $125. It’s an awesome way to check out high-end services without having to pay high-end prices.

I got a chance to preview two services for myself: a haircut from Greg May Hair Architects, and a 60-minute facial from Pure + Simple. I will be doing a more extensive review of both, but for now, I just want to tell you that I loved both! You can see what my hair looked like after Greg did his magic here. Pretty amazing, right? And since he applied the “protein shake” to my mane, my hair has been so glossy and smooth. The level of service at Greg May Hair Architects is top-notch…and you might even get a free sushi lunch out of it too!

The Pure + Simple facial (save for the extractions) was one of the most relaxing experiences ever! Seriously, it included a massage, a mask, and an electric-zapping thingamajig, to make sure that all of the bacteria was dead. In short…it was awesome!

If you’re a beauty junkie, or just need a good haircut, make sure to check out Beautylicious…there are SO many salons to choose from, and prices are a dream. Go forth, and beautify!

How awesome does Jamie Chung look here?! The dress is simple, and not overtly sexy, but throw some red lipstick into the mix, and you get a red-carpet worthy appearance. Top to bottom, from her easy hair-do, to her covetable Proenza Schouler bag, to those rocking platforms – I’m loving it.

What I Wore: All-Canadian

Speaking of Toronto Fashion Week! Guess who was featured in Flare Magazine’s Wear Canada: Blogger Edition? Style Blog!!!

My fellow bloggers, and I were asked to wear our fave Canadian pieces for this post, and boy…was it ever difficult to choose! In the end, I wore this comfy Ashley Rowe dress, accessorized with a belt by George Antonopoulos (OBJECT for Danier Leather), a bracelet I picked up at The Bay, and a pair of my fave Aldo boots. Not too shabby, and pretty much all Canadian.

Trying to figure out what to wear made me realize that I actually own a ton of pieces by Canadian brands and designers. Which was definitely a nice surprise! What about you? Do you have Canadian fashion faves? If so, share in the comments!

PS. Huge thanks to Flare and Ryan M. Cheung for the feature! It was truly an honor to have been included!

I Wore: Dress – Ashley Rowe; Belt – OBJECT for Danier Leather; Boots – Aldo; Backpack – Chanel; Bracelet – Expression at The Bay; Ring – YSL
