Friday Faux Pas: Isabelle Mastache Fall 2010

So by the looks of it, Madrid Fashion Week just gave birth to the second coming (or at least a wannabe) of Martin Margiela – Isabelle Mastache. Margiela has done the glove jackets, but I doubt he’s ever veered into the genitalia pants. Well, Isabelle actually went there. From the controversial pants, to some sort of a lumpy-one-eyed-bunny sweater, to the clam-face hat (?)…the collection is one not-so-hot mess. I get that the point was to have an avant-garde show, but penis pants, to me, just scream PR trick. Let’s see if those pop up on any of the celebs any time soon. Kanye West, a self-proclaimed fashion-lover, would be my nominee.

A Little Damage

A little bit of Urban Outfitters and a little bit of Yorkdale. Thank goodness it’s Friday!

Style Fille: Nicole Richie…again

Ok, so I should probably ease up with Nicole Richie here, but I really do love the things she tends to wear, both in her daily life and in photo shoots. Like in this one. Adore her Burberry styling…and most of all, love the location of her shoot – my favorite-est place in Paris – Pont Alexandre III. Nicole, Paris and Burberry…all so very lovely.

What I’m Wearing: Russia vs. Canada

Last night’s “epic” game was way too painful to watch. At least for me. I went in truly believing that no matter which team won, I’d still be happy, since I am a Canadian of Russian descent. It’s a win-win, right? Wrong! Sitting at a St. Louis, surrounded by a sea of jersey-clad Team Canada fans, I felt a little sad for Team Russia, and though I dressed to represent both teams – Russian Matryoshka tee with a Canada Cowichan sweater on top, I found myself gritting my teeth when Canada scored not 1, not 2, but 3 goals in the first period and the only one in the entire bar to leap for joy when Russians scored! I guess, so much for neutrality.

Still, I would have to admit, Canadians played really well. Much, much better than during their game against the US. As for the Russians…they just didn’t show up. Oh well, maybe next time…perhaps winning on home turf is what matters, and the team that really, really wanted it won? We shall see if it’s the case in Sochi.

I am wearing: Top – Zara; Men’s Sweater – The Bay; Rings – H&M

Wishlist: Aldo Welden

Spring has been on my mind since…December. And now, most stores actually reflect my wishful thinking! Hooray! The latest on my list of “wants” is the Welden lace-up shoe from Aldo. Great detailing, perfect heel (not too high, not too low), and a pretty good price point – $90. I think I am sold. Now can we just make all this snow disappear?

Update: Got these! Now if only the weather would cooperate, so that I could take these for a spin!

Style Fille: Viviana Volpicella

Some people, they just have it. That certain je ne sais quoi. It makes sense that they are in fashion, because they embody it. Like Viviana Volpicella. Nothing about Viviana’s style feels forced to me. The woman can wear mustard like noone else. She can mix the craziest colors together, and not end up looking like a 5-year old. She can even wear heart-shaped sunglasses, without looking like a dimwit…which let’s face it, 99% of people with those sunglasses look like dimwits. Viviana has a style that is undeniably her own, which clearly helps if you work for Vogue Nippon! And with that killer smile of hers, it looks like she’s loving every minute of it.

What I’m Wearing: Havana

It was a relatively cold day for Cuba. Maybe under 20 degrees Celsius! Plus cloudy, windy, etc. So I really had to hold on to my hat for most of our day in Havana to prevent it from flying away. But my new H&M Men’s tee was perfect for such a day. Long sleeves that roll up, yet with enough volume not to be too hot when it got sunny. Plus it’s…that’s right…it’s striped! I know, I know…I need help.

And the shoes…I really don’t get it. I’ve worn these sandals in Rome, Paris, Sorrento, Mexico, Toronto…everywhere…and they’ve always been nothing but comfortable! Yet this time around, I had to stop a few times, just to let my blisters feet get some rest. What gives? Is it time to throw these babies out? I don’t think I am ready yet.

I am wearing: Shirt, Hat - H&M Men; Shorts – Forever21; Bag – Old Navy; Sandals – Zara; Sunglasses – Ray-Ban; Bracelet – Iberostar Laguna Azul

All Canadian

Being Canadian is really de rigueur nowadays. It’s incredible what a little marketing can do. The Vancouver Olympics, of course, have a lot to do with it. But, credit should be given to HBC for really marketing the crap out of their Canadiana apparel. From Wayne Gretzky and Glee guys, to it-girl Rachel Bilson – The Bay clothes are all over celebs and athletes, and are selling out in stores everywhere! Over 3 million pairs of red mittens were sold to date…and still going.

As for this HBC blanket coat – I do love this coat on Rachel. Such fun colors and so very Canadian. Hmm, perhaps the All-Canadian look will catch on in the rest of the world soon enough? Until then…Go, Canada, go!

Wishlist: Be&D Genesis

So my quest for a perfect everyday bag continues. And I think I just stroke gold! As my Miu Miu Coffer is looking more and more ragged, this Be&D doppelganger might just be a perfect substitute! At around $1000 USD, it’s on the lower pricing end of luxury bags, yet the size and design of it seem perfect. I, especially, love the fact that it has a cross-body strap, which is perfect for those days when I need two free hands while running errands around town. The leather looks nice and durable and while Genesis does have that Coffer quality to it, it’s also much more simple than my Miu Miu. I think…it might just be the one!

And The New LG Fashion Week Venue Is…

30 Ordnance Avenue. And though this year’s location is slightly closer to downtown than last years’ King and Shaw haunt. Yet, 30 Ordnance Avenue isn’t as public transit friendly as either Shaw or Nathan Phillips Square locations. So far my thoughts on this new venue are…no likey. Though Robin Kay, President of the FDCC seems to disagree.

“The new location for LG Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oréal Paris exemplifies The Power of Style,” said Robin Kay. “ 30 Ordnance Avenue is a very powerful space. Formerly a manufacturer’s warehouse, the unique and spacious decor creates an amazing aura that I’m sure will add to the event. I have great hopes for a powerful fashion future in this wonderful venue.”

Will just have to wait and see. I can imagine, cab companies will be profiting from this venue change the most. What are your thoughts on this?

Spot On

Le boyfriend’s first reaction at seeing me in my new-ish Zara leopard print coat was sheer horror. To him, leopard print in general, translates into a trashy Eastern European woman with no taste. As a person of East European descent, I don’t take any offence to his aversion – I’ve seen my fair share of horrid use of leopard print, zebra print, etc. back home to be able to agree with him that animal prints can definitely go wrong if worn inappropriately. But… can such an awesome and stylish group as Aurora Sansone, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Viviana Volpicella, Poppy Delevigne, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld really be wrong? Sure, they could. But to me, in my humble opinion, a leopard print coat is a chic top-up to a simple outfit. And that’s that. Love it or hate it.

Friday Faux Pas: Standing Room

So the latest ”scandal” around the blogosphere is that Ashley Olsen did not get up to give Tommy Hilfiger a standing ovation at the end of his NYFW Fall 2010 show. She did get up eventually, but only after Penn Badgley’s prodding and pulling. So this week’s question is this: assuming that she really did not get up to clap for Hilfiger (as opposed to having a delayed reaction), is that a front row faux pas? Or is everyone entitled to sit and stand as they please?

Organic Style: Claire

Well, if there’s one good thing about the TTC (I can also name a lot of bad ones), it would be spotting cool-dressed people riding it! Like Claire. Awesome army surplus jacket, colorful plaid scarf, orange nails, cool glasses, and a French accent. Does it get any cooler than that? To me, this is perfect.

Coulda, Shoulda…

A couple of years ago, when this colorful Prada collection was still in stores, I was mulling over this clutch for a while. In the end, I decided that the colors were too loud and I wouldn’t love it months/years later. Well, two years after, this Tommy Ton photo from NYFW is sparking jealousy and regrets. I really wish I had bought it when I had the opportunity. It’s a perfect size, and the color is not too loud, and it matches her fingernails, and…Damn! I hate coulda, shoulda, wouldas.
